You saved yourself a lot of grief and verbal demonization from Trump haters by emphasizing how much you did not like Trump, though you never mentioned how you liked, or disliked, any other leader in your talk.
This is an interesting talk; however, I'm always taken aback by the lack of economic considerations concerning American interests. Both the elites and critics assume that America can carry these responsibilities indefinitely. America is rich but not that rich; America is like the dissolute heir that believes the trust fund will never dry up. Since Reagan (1980-1988) and including the subsequent Presidents, Americans have been sold a fantasy that you can have good schools, roads, financially sound cities, and an expansive foreign policy while having low taxes. That fantasy will eventually burst. Secondly, China need not ever go to war with the US. Thanks to the deliberate deindustrialisation of America (NAFTA), America is deeply dependent on China for many of the goods that Americans rely on for their daily lives. China need only to cut off the flow of goods to the US. When the Wal-Marts and Targets are bereft of goods will that dependency become obvious. Additionally, China is working to become less dependent on the US market; that's the point of its Silk Road strategy. Its expansion into the ME and Africa is part of their strategy. Making nice with their Asian neighbors and opening markets there is part of their policy. (Not all the Asian nations have a good view of China). The TransPacific Pact was designed not only to liberalize trade between the US and the Asian Bloc but to counter the rise of China in the region. Trump's deep-sixing the agreement left those countries little choice but to consider China as an alternative. Whether the agreement would have been advantageous to the US is open to question; its primary purpose was geopolitical: to contain China and limit its reach. To conclude, American domination and influence may last for quite a while but it won't last forever.

Terry Cote I agree with the first half you wrote, but the TPP had very little to do with trade. It was about the tech companies like Apple, Google, etc ensuring their monopolies in the international digital economy and sacrificing more US industry to secure it. Plus, TPP would have done nothing to compete with China bc of the lack of “point of origin” regulations that would have allowed “made in China” products to be sold through those other countries.

In another lecture I heard him explain that for the US (or any other state) to maintain its status as the global superpower it requires 1) regional hegemony over it's own neighbourhood and 2) the lack of regional hegemony in other area of the globe. A global superpower *requires* a world in which there is no legitimate rival to it *anywhere*, even outside of its own region/neighboudhood

I would have thought it obvious. It's about access to markets and resources on favourable terms while having the ability to restrict the same access to competitors. China's rise makes it by default the major competitor for market share as well as political influence in Asia. As such it is both an economic and a military rival to the United States. I say military rival because sooner or later China is going to want to assert its geopolitical presence in the South China Sea and the corollary of that is a weakening of the economic, political and military position of the United States. With regards geostrategic competition in Asia the United States seems to view things in terms of a zero sum game whereby a gain for others automatically translates as a loss for themselves. Such a point of view is bound to lead to political friction, perhaps even leading to outright conflict, if it is not willing to concede regional hegemony to China - which is probably an historical inevitably at this point.

I am willing to bet most American companies that contract illegals would be happy to have Americans to work for them. But there's a problem: where are those Americans? Which Americans are willing to dig ditches, pull weeds, lay slab, and flip burgers for minimum wage? And it's not always about Americans just not seeing those jobs as at their level; a lot of these companies are not willing to pay Americans a higher wage.

I really appreciate most of the Mr. Mearsheimer observation. Particularly on this one, I was deeply disappointed in his comments regarding President Trump approach to immigration. It was taken out of context. President Trump policy was to restrict illegal immigration, something that any self respecting country would do. Not the legal immigration. Further Mr. Mearsheimer mentioned that USA needs those immigrants coming from the south border as they fill in the positions for works that Americans wouldn’t do, probably thinking of low paid jobs. Nice! That sounds like a modern day slavery. If USA cares about immigrants coming from the south border would be nice if it makes it easy for them to enter the country through legal process and screening for security reasons and let them have a decent life, so that they can have legal employment with benefits. This way they are treated like second class citizens. Immigration policy of the USA is very restrictive. Thus, those talks about accepting new immigrants are not quite true. President Trump was not to blame for that. Intentionally misinterpreting of his stance on immigration or should I say, illegal immigration, which is nothing more than modern day slavery.

I like Mearsheimer's lectures, and I think he brings up a lot of valid points. Something funny I found myself thinking though is that around 57:00 when he asks the audience: "wouldn't you rather be a powerful state like America?", I actually found myself thinking 'no'. As an American, I feel that global hegemony actually comes at a high cost domestically. I would rather be a Sweden or Denmark, a country who has focused heavily on internal development and essentially has no power in the sphere of international relations, or is part of a broader bloc like the EU/NATO which can guarantee it's security. I agree with some of the other comments on here which rightfully point out that even though America was and arguably still is the global hegemon and the most powerful state, the domestic cost has been high. We don't have affordable education or healthcare and there are still relatively high levels of poverty, food, and housing insecurity. There is still massive work to be done at home, yet whenever potential programs for these issues are brought up the first question is always, 'well, how would we fund that'?. The 700 billion we spend each year on the military, however, is off limits and viewed as completely necessary to our existence, even though, as Mearsheimer rightly pointed out, given our geography, wealth, and nuclear deterrence, we are already the most secure state in the history of the world. Yet somehow, this hegemonic overreach, far from being a temporary state of affairs, has somehow become accepted as the new normal.

i d make the counter that the issues you are pointing at are less a consequence of paying for a huge military, and more a consequence of a divided country, high corruption, and capitalism run amok. One example would be your pharma prices. You pay like 3-5 times what we do for the same medicine. This example has nothing to do with the military spending.

Anyways, the point was that I agree with you that domestic policy is also an issue here, especially conservative socio-economics. However, the best estimates suggest that the U.S. since 2001 has spent 8 TRILLION dollars on the wars in the Middle East and adventures in the Horn of Africa. Upwards of 300 million dollars PER DAY. Obviously this hasn't 'depleted' the economy, but it is undeniable that this has been a massive drag on social spending. Both the overreach of the U.S. in international relations and our domestic policies are issues that need to be reassessed.
But to be fair to the Prof, he is very frank about his views that the US is determined to contain China by all means necessary to maintain its position as the sole hegemon and super-power. I must admit most Americans share his views too and what makes it more dangerous is that the US is confident it can crush China easily just as it did with past competitors like Spain, Japan, Germany and Russia. My view is that the US fleet will lose a battle in the South China Sea as China is already preparing for it. That's why it is building military bases on the Paracels and Spratly Islands. Tragically it will then escalate into a full scale and even nuclear war as the US cannot be seen to be slighted...
You have a good sense on Asia/China/South China Sea - while I agree with the Prof. on most issues - I doubt a hot war will happen any time in the next 10-20 years between the two giants. The reason is precisely what you mentioned - US cannot win besides the question should US even want a war in the South China Sea. The other point I have doubt is that the Southeast Asian countries will side US against China. No doubt that there are strong sentiments against China as well as pro-US there, but the realpolitik means they would rather stay neutral than picking a side - at least outwardly. The recent events affirm the neutral stance taken by there countries.

They are now growth into a blue navy that can sail around the world and their third aircraft carrier will be launched this year. Besides being about to sail tens of thousands of miles, the Chinese navy also has they support ships. Their objective now is to protect their merchant fleet from America's threat. As for the quality of the Chinese naval vessels, the new Type 055 cruiser is comparable to the US Arleigh Burke class 3 which won't even enter service until 2023. The present US navy Arleigh Burke class 1 n 2 cannot beat the Type 055 in terms of radar and missile range..... US weapons used to be the best in the world but Russia and China have not only caught up but surpassed the US in some areas like hypersonic missiles which it has no defense against.

Historians always do an amazing job of analyzing the past - I suspect I will learn a lot. However they also often misapply it to the future. I sense this professor is one of the best in that regard! I say that based on another video I watched where he blamed western support of expanding NATO for Russia's action in the Ukraine. If the self-consumed backwards-focused analysis doesn't put me to sleep I would like to glean out and consider his view on Trump. If it's that significant I may return.

Let's also keep in mind that Trump didn't bring up the idea of NATO allies being free loaders. Obama called NATO allies, specifically France and the UK, "free riders" after failing to stabilize Libya in 2016. Madeleine Albright has said that "NATO needed to shift its core mission" after the Cold War, so the US used it as a vehicle to spread liberal democracy around the world, and that it would use the military alliances to achieve its political objectives. In other words, NATO would go from "defensive" to "offensive". She even mentioned Yugoslavia, which became a mess.
I don't think the comment about US shutting down immigration from 1924-65 or whatever is true. I believe we were bringing people in during ww2 because we had some many of our men fighting and not at home working.

If either act too independently, however, they will both run up against the limits of their own power and that of the United States. The United States is powerful but it is not all powerful, just look at its performance in Syria vis-à-vis Russia as an example. It can bend over backwards for Israel and Saudi Arabia but it still has to acknowledge the limits of that power when their interests come into conflict with another great power; what's in the best interests of Israel and Saudi Arabia is not necessarily in the best interests of the United States.

Both the elites and critics assume that America can carry these responsibilities indefinitely. America is rich but not that rich; America is like the dissolute heir that

Presidents, Americans have been sold a fantasy that you can have good schools, roads, financially
sound cities, and an expansive foreign policy while having low taxes. That fantasy will eventually

Secondly, China need not ever go to war with the US. Thanks to the deliberate deindustrialisation
of America (NAFTA), America is deeply dependent on China for many of the goods that Americans rely
on for their daily lives. China need only to cut off the flow of goods to the US. When the Wal-Marts and
Targets are bereft of goods will that dependency become obvious. Additionally, China is working to become less dependent on the US market; that's the point of its Silk Road strategy. Its expansion into the
ME and Africa is part of their strategy. Making nice with their Asian neighbors and opening markets there
is part of their policy. (Not all the Asian nations have a good view of China). The TransPacific Pact was designed not only to liberalize trade between the US and the Asian Bloc but to counter the rise of China in
the region. Trump's deep-sixing the agreement left those countries little choice but to consider China as
an alternative. Whether the agreement would have been advantageous to the US is open to question; its
primary purpose was geopolitical: to contain China and limit its reach.

Terry Cote I agree with the first half you wrote, but the TPP had very little to do with trade. It was about the tech companies like Apple, Google, etc ensuring their monopolies in the international digital economy and sacrificing more US industry to secure it. Plus, TPP would have done nothing to compete with China bc of the lack of “point of origin” regulations that would have allowed “made in China” products to be sold through those other countries.

2 months later but oh well. In another lecture I heard him explain that for the US (or any other state) to maintain its status as the global superpower it requires 1) regional hegemony over it's own neighbourhood and 2) the lack of regional hegemony in other area of the globe.

I would have thought it obvious. It's about access to markets and resources on favourable terms while having the ability to restrict the same access to competitors. China's rise makes it by default the major competitor for market share as well as political influence in Asia. As such it is both an economic and a military rival to the United States. I say military rival because sooner or later China is going to want to assert its geopolitical presence in the South China Sea and the corollary of that is a weakening of the economic, political and military position of the United States.
With regards geostrategic competition in Asia the United States seems to view things in terms of a zero sum game whereby a gain for others automatically translates as a loss for themselves. Such a point of view is bound to lead to political friction, perhaps even leading to outright conflict, if it is not willing to concede regional hegemony to China - which is probably an historical inevitably at this point.

I am willing to bet most American companies that contract illegals would be happy to have Americans to work for them. But there's a problem: where are those Americans? I really appreciate most of the Mr. Mearsheimer observation. Particularly on this one, I was deeply disappointed in his comments regarding President Trump approach to immigration. It was taken out of context. President Trump policy was to restrict illegal immigration, something that any self respecting country would do. Not the legal immigration. Further Mr. Mearsheimer mentioned that USA needs those immigrants coming from the south border as they fill in the positions for works that Americans wouldn’t do, probably thinking of low paid jobs. Nice! That sounds like a modern day slavery. If USA cares about immigrants coming from the south border would be nice if it makes it easy for them to enter the country through legal process and screening for security reasons and let them have a decent life, so that they can have legal employment with benefits. This way they are treated like second class citizens.
Immigration policy of the USA is very restrictive. Thus, those talks about accepting new immigrants are not quite true. President Trump was not to blame for that. Intentionally misinterpreting of his stance on immigration or should I say, illegal immigration, which is nothing more than modern day slavery.

I like Mearsheimer's lectures, and I think he brings up a lot of valid points. Something funny I found myself thinking though is that around 57:00 when he asks the audience: "wouldn't you rather be a powerful state like America?", I actually found myself thinking 'no'. As an American, I feel that global hegemony actually comes at a high cost domestically. I would rather be a Sweden or Denmark, a country who has focused heavily on internal development and essentially has no power in the sphere of international relations, or is part of a broader bloc like the EU/NATO which can guarantee it's security.
I agree with some of the other comments on here which rightfully point out that even though America was and arguably still is the global hegemon and the most powerful state, the domestic cost has been high. We don't have affordable education or healthcare and there are still relatively high levels of poverty, food, and housing insecurity. There is still massive work to be done at home, yet whenever potential programs for these issues are brought up the first question is always, 'well, how would we fund that'?. The 700 billion we spend each year on the military, however, is off limits and viewed as completely necessary to our existence, even though, as Mearsheimer rightly pointed out, given our geography, wealth, and nuclear deterrence, we are already the most secure state in the history of the world. Yet somehow, this hegemonic overreach, far from being a temporary state of affairs, has somehow become accepted as the new normal.

Anyways, the point was that I agree with you that domestic policy is also an issue here, especially conservative socio-economics. However, the best estimates suggest that the U.S. since 2001 has spent 8 TRILLION dollars on the wars in the Middle East and adventures in the Horn of Africa. Upwards of 300 million dollars PER DAY. Obviously this hasn't 'depleted' the economy, but it is undeniable that this has been a massive drag on social spending.
Both the overreach of the U.S. in international relations and our domestic policies are issues that need to be reassessed.
But to be fair to the Prof, he is very frank about his views that the US is determined to contain China by all means necessary to maintain its position as the sole hegemon and super-power. I must admit most Americans share his views too and what makes it more dangerous is that the US is confident it can crush China easily just as it did with past competitors like Spain, Japan, Germany and Russia. My view is that the US fleet will lose a battle in the South China Sea as China is already preparing for it. That's why it is building military bases on the Paracels and Spratly Islands. Tragically it will then escalate into a full scale and even nuclear war as the US cannot be seen to be slighted...
You have a good sense on Asia/China/South China Sea - while I agree with the Prof. on most issues - I doubt a hot war will happen any time in the next 10-20 years between the two giants. The reason is precisely what you mentioned - US cannot win besides the question should US even want a war in the South China Sea.
The other point I have doubt is that the Southeast Asian countries will side US against China. No doubt that there are strong sentiments against China as well as pro-US there, but the realpolitik means they would rather stay neutral than picking a side - at least outwardly. The recent events affirm the neutral stance taken by there countries.

The Chinese initial naval objective was to protect their shorelines. That's why they have alot of corvettes. It has progressed to larger warships that can travel long distances like cruisers and destroyers. Their objective is to enforce an area of denial in the first island chain stretching from Japan to the Philippines down to Indonesia. This it has already been achieved. They are now growth into a blue navy that can sail around the world and their third aircraft carrier will be launched this year. Besides being about to sail tens of thousands of miles, the Chinese navy also has they support ships. Their objective now is to protect their merchant fleet from America's threat.
As for the quality of the Chinese naval vessels, the new Type 055 cruiser is comparable to the US Arleigh Burke class 3 which won't even enter service until 2023. The present US navy Arleigh Burke class 1 n 2 cannot beat the Type 055 in terms of radar and missile range.....
US weapons used to be the best in the world but Russia and China have not only caught up but surpassed the US in some areas like hypersonic missiles which it has no defense against.

Let's also keep in mind that Trump didn't bring up the idea of NATO allies being free loaders. Obama called NATO allies, specifically France and the UK, "free riders" after failing to stabilize Libya in 2016.
Madeleine Albright has said that "NATO needed to shift its core mission" after the Cold War, so the US used it as a vehicle to spread liberal democracy around the world, and that it would use the military alliances to achieve its political objectives. In other words, NATO would go from "defensive" to "offensive". She even mentioned Yugoslavia, which became a mess.
