You nailed it my friend. My mechanic identified this on my 2014 and now on my 2018 Ram 1500 Hemi. Ram should fix this since it is a design flaw of two metals that heat at different speeds but they have no intention of doing it on these models. Nicely done sir!
@user-zn7xk3ug3k
For real. Lucky when I purchased the truck new, came with lifetime Power train warranty.
Already fix 6 broken bolts and got new lifters and cam shaft for free
I have the same thing but it doesn’t go away.
@@cherijohansen6490
Lucas.
Oil alone is not enough
How many miles were on them when you noticed they started breaking? we have a 2019 with almost 90k miles now. Just wondering how long we may have.
Man this video might have just saved me a lot of time an money I have the same tick that goes away after the truck is warmed up a little
Had to do this on my 04 Dakota 4.7 years ago...PITA....had to drill a few out and use heliocoil inserts....held great but was so such a small area to work in. This year, I bought a 2012 Ram 1500 which I knew had this issue. Two things 1. There is a lot more room on a Ram than on a Dakota 2. Having not welded for 30+ years (stick welding) and also having a MIG welder on my shelf I bought from Amazon during a prime week 2 years ago....I decided it was time to relearn on 5 bolts broken off at the stud. Result, nothing short of awesome!
Just what I needed.
I am looking at a hemi 2500 and was worried about having to replace the exhaust manifolds.
You're videos are a work of art with great know how too.
Stay safe and well
Bro, I been trying to figure out that tick in my '07 Ram 1500 for like 2 years. Fixing that today, THANK YOU!
Don't forget to deck (belt sand most likely) the exhaust manifolds before putting them back on and it shouldn't happen again. They'll still move, but they get more stable after some heat cycles, decking them will make sure they are true again now that they have slightly warped since new.
I was gonna say the exact same thing 👍
Apparently they snap due to becoming superheated. Man, I just had this done 2017 ram 1500 laramie. 12 studs were sheared. The exhaust manifold was warped and not reusable. This cost 2300 bucks. Learn from my mistake, and take your rig in as soon as you notice something. The main part of the cost was getting the studs out. These guys here in the video did it the right way in my opinion. Use a welder, don't drill and tap.
Also- all bolts were replaced with stainless steel- dissipates heat and are stronger 👍
Hey thanks for your comment, good to know. My 2017 is sounding like this after pulling my trailer this year
Yep, these ram manifolds warp inward making a "U" shape. Thats why there is extra strain on the outside bolts. Redecking the manifold is a must
Hey Good Job my Friend. I have the same noise 2015 with 93,000 miles I am gonna go outside right now and see if my shield is not attached W\broken bolt if YES, then easy and inexpensive fit. I do not weld either nor do I have a machine. NOt sure how I am gonna get those things out. Non the less good video professional, short, to the point did not waist my time telling me you had go feed the chickens or how you solved another unrelated problem. Gzzzzzz so many videos people do and take soooo long my time is valuable too Give you my highest recommendation
Thank u so much. I have 175k miles on my ram and I've been waiting for that tick. But I got underneath and saw a missing bolt from my headers
Thank you saved me around 1200 dollars
I need to check this on my sons charger there’s a ticking noise and I was thinking it was a lifter thanks for this video
Yessss sir.
They pop because the block is aluminum and the manifold is cast steel. They have different thermal expansion (So they grow different amounts when they get hot). The load theory probably has a play in it 👍but the major thing is low grade factory bolts and differing thermal expansion
Morning JT.
In my opinoin, most of the broken echaustmanifold Bolts are on Rams.
Shortage on issues that is will happen on Charger/Challenger
hmmmm, I have yet to do one on the Chargers or Challengers
@@OnlineMechanicTips
Okay, i was obviously wrong :-)
Should've replaced the cast iron manifold with a stainless. The stainless steel and aluminum head have close heat cycle time which won't allow those bolts to break at all
Yes the Hemi exhaust 'tick' is caused by broken exhaust manifold studs/bolts.
The Hemi heads are made from aluminum and the exhaust manifolds are made from cast iron, two different metals that expand and contract at different rates due to heat application cycles.
The rear studs/bolts have the most heat applied to them because the heat from the other three exhaust outlets has to pass by the last outlet to expelled through the exhaust pipes and Cats. Therefore the aft exhaust manifold studs/bolts endure heat cycles with greater temperature ranges than the forward studs/bolts, hence they usually break first.
Usually the tick sound caused by the broken exhaust manifold studs/bolts goes away as the engine warms up.
The hot parts, heads and manifolds, expand and take up the gap caused by the broken parts, quieting the ticking sound.
You mean block eh👍😆 read through that. A fellow metal man😁🤟
And also bro the real hemi "tick" is warn out lifters they get pitted because Dodge used cheap ass steel on the rollers on the lifters. They stop contacting the rocker arm correctly and have a gap so when that lifter engages it strikes it instead of rolling on it.
Ogcowboy .. correct.
Great video man, thank you! Broken bolts and I know each other well. It’s a hate hate relationship ! Again thank you for the video. Great job
If you can or don’t have a welder you can get a left hand tap and bolt and drill the stud , the tightening of the screw will loosen the bolt because they are opposing forces!
He is absolutely correct. It is the bolts on the manifold.
Nice video JT. Shows how much you know yer stuff!
Thanks for watching bud
4.7s had the same issue, last bolt would break but you could normally get it out by hand
Really appreciate and Enjoy Your Channel Man , I thought the same , Ended Up My 4.7 Exhaust Was Bad
The manifold is usually warped . Put it on a straight level surface and see. Have it surfaced by a machinist or sand it down yourself.
Thank you! Now I know exactly what my truck needs !
I like your style. Thanks for the info.
Thanks for watching bud
My Dart has exactly the same bolt broken off for years from trying to swap to the performance early 340 manifolds. I had taken it out a few times to do gaskets and the upgrade but the last time I touched it it broke off and I was using wd40 and all that. Makes the same noise when cold or under load too.
The original 69 318 manifolds were machined perfectly to the heads from the factory when built and needed no gaskets till you took them off and let it rust or put different manifolds or headers on it. I think the later engines they stopped doing the machine work and used gaskets as it was faster and cheaper.
Damn you were right on the money. My bottom rear one came loose from the mount. Thanks
When my old trucks had cast iron blocks in bags of aluminum, I never had these manifold problems
I've done several of these. Sanding and flattening the manifold with a hand file before reinstallation. Unfortunately they warp and takeout the studs.
Why does the exhaust tick noise go away after the car warms up? Is it from the expansion of the metal on the manifold?
Yes the noise can stop after warmed up. Bolts do break and need replaced.
The real tick is a very expensive to fix even Mo if you can't deal wit it yourself and your ignorance tells me you shouldn't even try. Like my boy here says it's just busted bolts. Keep up on your oil changes like it's church and use good oil... throw a couple rare earth magnets on your on the bottom of your oil filter and you'll prolly never git the tick. Same with your oil and trans pan if you wanna preserve then too.
Honestly is more a nuisance than blah but it does screw with the engineered resonance between the the intake and exhaust. Fyi too if you don't know what ya doing cold air intakes look cool but screw with crap you totally don't understand.
Yep that's it. I'm having the same issue with my ram. I'll give an update when I find out exactly is going on but it sounds much like this issue. Horrible tick, but goes away when warmed up.
@@dirtyshirt2821u ever found out what was it
I have the same sound
And looking here for some advice on what it might be
It stays the same when the car it’s idling
Does not get worst as you accelerate
When I’m doing like 30mph you don’t hear the noise
Just when you come to at stop and it’s idling that you hear the tick
Any ideas on what it might be
It’s a 2010 5.7L hemi ram 1500 it’s got 159k miles now
great stuff. just got a ram with the same problem i think. they cut the cats off “both of them” and straight piped it. so many exhaust leaks from bad welds. im hoping the tick is from a bad bolt on the manifold.
My 2018 ram had the tick from day 1. I tried all the you tube bullshit ,Still does it for 1 minute, just how it is, Move on in life, it runs great 👍
So it’s a lifter if there’s a misfire ? Because I have a tick but check engine says cylinder 5 misfire changed plugs and coils and injectors
Did your friend use flux core or mig with gas? Appreciate it the reason the bolts breaks is manifold warps with heat
Aside from dealing with the hemi tick or replacing the exhaust manifolds what could I do to fix loss of power when accelerating?
Thanks from Germany ❤
Thank you mine is doing the same noise thank you so much
Hi JT, my ram is having the tick now…. Now I watched your video, I know where the ticking is coming from. A couple of quick questions if you don’t mind answering: 1, should I replace both side gaskets and bolts at the same time just to save me the trouble of doing the other side a different time? 2, will the bolts break again after I replace them? 3, if so, what is the solution for that? Thank you JT in advance and again, awesome video 👍
Hey bud, the gasket is not the problem, so if the other side ok, simply upgrade the bolts with the new ones. When I repair one side side I always either torque the other side back to specs or simple install the newer bolt package.
Is there a specific bolt package for purchase somewhere?
I use the Mopar kit package from the dealer parts department
@@OnlineMechanicTips got it. So just ask for the exhaust manifold bolt kit and new gasket?
How much is reasonable for the mechanic to pay ?
anyone ?
Pay them based on their work test them out if you take your car to them and they give it back and the problem isn’t fixed and they tried to sell you a few different things then pay for what you have to but don’t go back but if you get the car back and the problem is fixed and everything is as you left it and the mechanic takes a little time to explain the problem that’s your guy go back to him because his work is good he’s honest and his pay is most likely reasonable for his work
So with the exhaust manifold allowing a measure of exposure to the atmosphere upstream of the catalytic converters, could it cause air to be drawn into the exhaust gasses enough for the O² sensors to detect a ratio outside of acceptable ranges and trigger an engine code such as P0144 or related?
Awsome video. Thanks Bruh 😎
Do the tick can stay all the time if its more damaged ?
If the tick dont quiet down after warming up then its likely in the valve train. And yes, you could damage your camshaft by keep driving it
Thanks for sharing!
I fixed that first exhaust manifold it had a crack in it. Then a few weeks later it started tick and now trying to figure it out
I got a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500
Having the same sound now
But the sound goes away once I’m at like cruising speed of 25 to 30mph
It does stay on when it’s at idle but does not get any worst
Could it possibly be just this ? Or something else
If you know Id be a great help to know so I can get it fixed
Did you find the problem?
Shit of it was me I'd just tap the old stud bolt out, it's be a heck of a lot cheaper and probably take less time if you know what your doing. Heck I'm 51 and I know that in my 30+ years of experience that'd be my go to.
Exhaust manifold gasket the 3-piece metal gasket would it eats up it expands
Make sure to tighten to ft lbs specs. Or whatever the torque spec is.
Thank you so much and will get on asap
Headers bro, are itll happen again. Its aluminum head and cast manifold that expanded and contracts at different levels. The bolts break...
Yo, I got a tick. Gladly it's not the Infamous Hemi tick, but from the location it sounds to be the transmission solenoid. Every time I put it into gear I hear it... And when I come to a stop ant the trans drops back into first gear. Any heads up at all would be appreciated...
What kind of vehicle is this? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
@@OnlineMechanicTips It's a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.7 Hemi. The sound just started this morning... And yes, I am subscribed.
@@Black_Reign Hey bud this year Jeep likely equipped with the 8HP transmission. It's a fully electronically controlled trans which means when it sees a problem, that info kept in the module. It takes a special tool to get in there and look at these codes and/or flash update that model. You may have to pay the dealer a visit to get that checked.
@@OnlineMechanicTips Electronically controlled. Exactly, that's what had me thinking about the transmission solenoid. I'll run the diagnostic and see what it says. But without an actual check engine light, I don't know how much I'll get. Thanks.
Why do 5.7l have that noisy vakve train mine makes the same clicking fluttering noise like yours when you went to the passenger side of the truck the side right before you said the noise went away it has that clicking noise is that normal and my manifolds are fine I don't have that gross tick from the manifold at all just the engine is very loud and has allot of excess noise like yours
Thank u sir i was expecting worse.
JT,
I replaced my manifold bolts yesterday on my ram 1500 5.7 hemi and torqued the bolts to 22ft pounds instead of 18ft pounds. Should I back them off and retorque them or let it ride?
Thats not much of diff and you should be fine imo.
@@OnlineMechanicTips thank you
As soon as it cranked I could tell it was an exhaust leak
I have a 2020 ram and it’s making the noise when the engine starts and it goes away is it the same problem here
Is this the V8 Hemi or the 3.6 Pantastar? Also are you subscribed to the channel?
contact me bro i have video i need to show you with my durango , if you have any socials or email
Same on my 15 ram. Been like that for the longest time. It's not an easy fix, and even if you give in and change, the bolts will happen again within 50k miles
I've never done a repeated repair on this job. The Mopar kit bolts was redesigned
@@OnlineMechanicTips it'll happen give it time
@@Carolinabiggins Perhaps.. but I think the reason behind upgrading of the bolts was so it wouldn't happen again. Hmmmm, but I could be wrong. I guess we'll wait and see.
@OnlineMechanicTips you may get lucky but I have yet to see one not eventually fail. I've changed mine twice once with oems and second with aftermarket. Everytime the end bolt snaps cause it's all the way on the end by itself. Just a really really bad design
My 2019 Ram new model style in the shop now with this same issue so even the new models still have these issues
my 19 ram has the same issue , sounds like a diesel when i first turn it on 😂
mine only ticks when accelerating between 2 and 4k rpms. any idea? valve cover? camshaft? exhaust mani? sounds like its coming from right above the front left wheel
my cam shaft and lifters went out at 209,000 miles
but
from new to 209,000 miles i had 3 broken bolts . all cover under warranty and the cam shaft was also cover under warranty.
they say for broken bolts it would cost 600 to 1000
cam shaft and lifters be around 5k.
anyone looking to buy used RAM , set side some money.
for me, lucky i have lifetime power train warranty
Hi - The 5k is for "accessories" *
If you don't upgrade the the bolts and replace the manifolds it's going to happen again! The manifolds warp after a while
Yea all the bolts get replaced. I guess ive been lucky concerning the manifolds.
Take your belt off and check all pulleys before! Mine was just the idler pulley broken
how much would a job like this cost?
Thank you 🙏
Thank you. My 2016 Ram has the ticking noise that goes away after it warms up. I don’t think I can fix myself, can someone recommend that I find a regular mechanic or take to dealership? I’m bummed this is happening, I really like the truck otherwise.
Hi, i would fine a trusted regular mechanic to do it for you, dealerships usually charge more money, and they do a shitty job. Find a mechanic with good reputation in your area is your best bet
I don't have the hemi but the 1500 6cyl. And it does this.
So what is the lil birdie chirping noise? I have a 2016 dodge charger.
your v6 probably
I have a 5.7 hemi not a v6 😅
What if the noise only stops at idle when it warms up but still makes it? Maybe warped?
Likely exhaust noise with broken studs.
Hey I have this and when I accelerate it makes this noise as well
why couldnt we hear the finished product ?
That would have been nice. I didn't get to put that piece of footage in the video. It was the end of the day and I went ahead and edit what I had and up loaded it.
@@OnlineMechanicTips did the tick come off ?
Yes, the truck fixed and long gone
What if it doesn't go away even after it warms up???
Hey bud then theres a problem. But it still can be broken studs. Any codes in your computer?
@@OnlineMechanicTips no codes
@@OnlineMechanicTips and I'm subbed and follow you 🤙
@@randyu8688 hey bud its all about the frequency of the sound..If its a thud tick noise that won't go away you may have a lifter that has collapse and possibly chewing into a cam lobe..You have to get that looked at and fix real soon
@@OnlineMechanicTips can I send u the video and sound ? Wish I could take you the truck!
So does the exhaust tick need to be fixed, since it goes away after the engine warms up?
I saw another video that flattened the warped manifold to prevent it from breaking a stud again. If you reinstall the warped manifold it causes stress on the studs
Good point, we have been making the repairs as seen in the video, never have replaced the manifold for warpness. And yes, ide get the broken exhaust tick noise fixed.
Gosh thank you!!
I have a short video on my page of my jeep. It’s basically quite when I start it up and start ticking as it warms. I have no idea what it is…..help lol.
Same here, can’t find anything on it,I’m following and if I find something out I’ll let you know
Try the fan clutch. Even if it’s good it can still make noise. Let it warm up and start making the noise and take the fan off.
The bigger issue is the truck white before pulling it in then black while working on it.
Does this happen on the challengers aswell
No, the exhaust sys different of a Challenger than a Ram 1500
@@OnlineMechanicTipsok thanks . I’m chasing a tapping sound on my 5.7 challenger man . I took a stethoscope and put on top of valve covers and listened to both sides seeing if I could hear a lifter but can’t hear anything on either side . It’s making the sound at low speed acceleration. Any advice ?
My 1500 makes that noise lol my uncle that's a macanic said up grade my muffler an they'll fix the problem lol
It’s an exhaust leak. Mine did that a couple times
Had both of my exhaust manifolds replaced and some bolts on each side had to be extracted paid a total $2,210 with the dealer smh ticking is caused when manifold s get warped due to heat and bolts brake
Mines throwing a cylinder misfire 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️ help!!!
Did you ever figure it out
@anakinskywalker6817 nah man been broke so im about to go file my taxes then hopefully get it look at
Coil or spark plugs
Will.this pull codes I have a list of knock sensor codes?
Did you find a solution?
This is a very very very common problem on the dodge
What up man! I trying to find wich 02 sensor is the one po161 on a ford escape 2005 v6 trying past inspectio. Heeeelpppppppp!!!!!!!!!
I have a 2021 Ram 1500 and I have 20K on it and I have the exhaust tick that just started.
The last one i did I had to replace the manifold on that side..its been redesigned but it had a crack on it..This should still be under warranty
Use 5w30 synthetic motor oil with mobil one or other high quality filter ,
Higher oil pressure at idle better lubrication for cam lifters no brainer,
It mite go well over 500k -1000miles
Wrong oil ,or keep listening Manufacturer and do your lifter and cam every 50k-100k.
I thought you said the noise was on the driver side then the video shows you doing passenger side
mine just ticks when driving over 25 mph
Lol to be fair, it's totally a hemi tick, just not from the lifters. If a hemi doesn't clack it's lifters, it's got a brown manifold stud 😂. The really cool kids like me have both!
Hey u forgot to say it's also not made like the other 3 stud 🔩 s
U see
It takes 4 stud bolts to hold the heat sheet
3 are made out of metal
But the top rear I think is made out of copper or brass n none metallic
But don't know y.!
What if the tick does not go away after car is warmed up?
We went to a mechanic and he’s saying it’s going to be the lifters and cam.. he wants to charge 1800 for labor alone
You can check the studs yourself. Try to undo them - if they are cracked, fatigued, they will pop (and then you know it was the studs/bolts).
1800$ then it’s not lifters that would be more like 3000 to 4000$
If it is cam I’d like too get your mechanics phone number
Does this happen on the V6 engines?
What do you mean?
Yes it dose the 3.7 liters by chrysler also like Dakotas are notorious for manifold problems.
What's the possibility of them not being broken but actually snapping off while trying to remove it? The old dont fix it if it ain't broken thing.
Not in this special case (heat cycling involved, studs are fatigued + warped manifold). If the studs are OK, they will unscrew without cracking. If weak (and manifold is leaking) = they pop.
Why not cover the hole and use an extraction kit instead less chance of damage
Another troll? You can do more damage if you drill not in the center of the stud, which is easy to do.
Welding is The Best method ever. Period.
@@GrandePunto8V Didn't know constructive opinions made for trolls. Happy to see more hemis on the road. If you know anything about stress and strain analysis. welding is going to make more excessive heat that than a drill bit can ever achieve. Bruh anyone with an opinion an be a troll doesn't mean you have to take it that way.
That’s a broken exhaust header or cracked exhaust header tick not the valve tick everyone is worried about
Recommend a tap out/ easy out woulda been a lot quiker, easier, and cheaper than a welder
Lames think that easy-outs are the solution every time. Welding is the best method. Period.
"Why"? Get some shop experience, then comment.
A problem for years. Pathetic Ram never fixed the issue.
If you got them out for 5 dollars you are the man lol. You should pick up a mig .

What do you suppose the issue was?
This design flaw was on purpose!
To benefit what?
