    In Bret's defense:
    1) He still feels the physical effects of that kick now.
    2) Bret was passionate about Wrestling, worked his entire life in wrestling and to have such a botch end your career is devastating.
    3) I think Owen's death also sours his love for wrestling.
    4) Montreal screwjob, putting up with Michaels WWF then Hogan/Bischoff in WCW.
    5) MONEY. Brett just signed a multi-million dollar deal too. Didnt even see half of it.
Why are people surprised hes bitter?

Because it’s been 25 years. Because after that amount of time you have to actively remind yourself about grievances, the mind will otherwise just move on.
Brett knew an injury would end his career. Basically every wrestlers career ends that way - and Brett’s career didn’t end in his 20’s. That happens to some people.
Brett knew the risks. Goldberg didn’t attack him in the street.

Most of his friends were high on drugs and roids.
His career ended because he still wanted to do a hardcore match while suffering a concussion, and still he wanted to do his figure four above a concrete floor, even tho it's already dangerous with protected floor.
The screwjob happened because Bret thought he was bigger than what he actually was (given he was a rating sink)
Most of the stuff that made Bret bitter are of his own making, he thought he was a big star when he was just keeping the title warm for actual stars. He thought he was too good to just recover from an injury. He played with matches, he got burned and blame it on the matches, the lighter, the fire, but never on himself for wanting to do it and failing.

I’m from Calgary and I’ll never forget listening to a radio talk show in about 2001 that had Diana Hart on promoting her new book. Bret called into the show and the 2 of them got into a huge argument live on the air. It was actually quite sad. Just honest and realistic as possible. If you ever even catch his tone, his overall demeanor, the guy isn’t bitter at all. It’s just when he’s interviewed, he’s blunt as can be, and some people can’t differentiate that kind of nonchalant straightforward attitude with anger. Not to mention, it’s others who keep asking him the same question, and his answer never changes, and then it gets posted in a 100 articles, so it seems like he’s harping on things. Rather its the documentaries, and journalists who are doing just that by asking him about the same topics over and over again.

It’s human emotional bias that makes us think we all should be “positive” about everything. If somebody is negative OR positive about anything, I don’t care… I’m going to analyze their individual points and see if each is valid. For the most part, I think most of Bret’s are.
…and when Al says: Bret is full of himself for being negative AND he feels bad for Bret …. Al doesn’t get that he’s the one full of himself. You think because Bret is negative in many ways towards wrestling that it means he has a terrible life overall? News flash: lots of us have a negative view of the jobs/career we have/had overall… doesn’t mean our life overall sucks. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Montreal, the WCW run not going as planned, his brother, other family members & friends dying (only one from attitude era Hart Foundation still alive), his career is ending prematurely and all the health issues that followed the injury (stroke). When you consider all of that being intercontinental champion in the 90s seems pretty insignificant.
Everyone deals with things differently. His health issues may play a part on his demeanor now. Who knows? It's been said that he took things very serious. - father/family screwed on $750k payment for his territory (in 86 which was life changing money at the time)
    - screwed on your first title run
    - screwed a 2nd time for your title run (also the last match for the company that you carried for years)
    - brother dies in the ring
    - 2nd act in wcw marred by poor booking
    - kicked in the head causing permanent damage and leads to the end of the career
i'm not saying that bret should be mad still. we hope everyone can get over the nagging b.s. in their life if for no other reason but personal happiness. but bret gave and gave and gave to the business that took and took and took from him in ways i think few experienced. i'd like to think that i wouldn't be bitter but i don't know.

That kick from Goldberg is no worse than a kick from Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic. I am sure Bret got concussed from that incident, but he was not KO'ed/blackout after it. He went on to put Goldberg in the Sharpshooter. I would make the case did Goldberg kick Bret or did he lift his foot up in the air and Bret ran into it. And I think Bret is one of the all time greats.

  • @ArtByBritania

Al Snow is being incredibly empathetic. He is pointing out that Bret cannot (for whatever the reason, it doesn't matter) seem to change his negative perspective on the wrestling industry and that's what is continuing to hurt him and put him in an angry, irreconcilable mindset. Droz had a terrible fate pushed onto him and instead of badmouthing and damning Dlo for all of eternity, he understood it was an accident and it was something that, sadly, could've happened to anyone. He, and Bret are just very unfortunate and happened to be a victim of bad luck. What Bret does have control over is how he responds to triggering topics like the WWE and it's his own responsibility to turn those intense emotions into something positive that benefits his livelihood. Yes, he can no longer wrestle, but he could've been a coach, or start a school, or (if he displayed traits characteristic of someone who did not hold things personally and could be professional) work in other aspects pertaining to other ventures in wrestling. Instead, he clung to the dream of always being able to physically wrestle, no matter what, and when a career ending accident happened he, decades later, never was able to learn how to adapt to anything else in life. And I think that's what Mr. Snow recognizes and pity's about him. Some people find a new meaning in life after traumatic events through spirituality, the arts, science, etc. But unfortunately he doesn't seem to have a viewpoint of life outside the ring.

    • @codesm96
      @codesm96 Місяць тому

Sorry but Droz being bitter and angry is probably the most justifable thing I can imagine, how on earth can your mind not be having everything taken away from you like that, it was an accident and D'Lo obviously NEVER wanted to hurt him and tried to be careful but it's not him I believe he would be angry about, it would be the situation itself happening, the fact that you had everything taken away from you. Our minds are like that, it's painful but you cannot ever expect someone to lose almost everything to be okay or happy with a tragedy that happened to that even many years have passed, because it affects how they live till this day, especially somethign as serious as having your independence taken away from youa s a grown adult. I know because no matter how I try to fight it, I feel the same in respect to my own life and the horrible things that have happened. I understand why Bret feels the way he does, but at the end of the day who are we to tell him how to feel when we've not lived his life, on top of everything we know in the public, just think about everything that's happened behind the scenes that Bret doesn't want to talk about, not to mention the pain he has to deal with each and every single day because of the injuries which a lot of long time wrestlers suffer from. You don't know. It's sad yeah but the truth is life is sad, a lot of people live objectively sad, difficult lives full of suffering every single day, lives that lead to miserable ends and no amount of positive thinking will ever change that.

Bret is used to being letdown or left behind. He took the business very seriously as life and it was a part of his family. I read his book and his career didn't end how he wanted it to. That happens to many wrestlers but he lost a lot of his family that were in wrestling. I think he's upset because he couldn't fix all his family turmoil. Wrestling was life for Bret. I don't recall much negativity towards Russo that sticks out to me. Goldberg just didn't qualify as a professionally trained wrestler in his eyes and the past can't be changed. He will realize everyone wants to remember Bret with mostly fond stories and memories.

Goldberg didn't end his career. Two things on that. 1) Bret hit the back of his head on the concrete earlier in the match messing up the ringpost figure four. You can see it. Bret's doctor told him the back of his head felt like hamburger. The back of your head can't be damaged from getting hit the face. 2) Bret is hit in the side of the head with Goldberg's kick and fell to the mat. His head didn't even touch the mat after falling.
He also wrestled almost a dozen more times in the month of January following that match, sometimes against Goldberg. Bret didn't take time off and properly heal his injuries and he wants to blame someone else.

He didnt get kicked, go home and never wrestle again. Not a doctor, but the continued punishment more then likely accelerated the damage. Have never seen anyone ask him to his face about it

Al Snow is right and so is Russo, both are right. Bret reminds me of myself, extremely honest and loyal to a fault, that describes me perfectly. However, I also have "inner pain" (the way my father described it), as well, that I'm reluctant to just "let go" of, so I can understand it from Bret's perspective, as Russo towards the end is trying to get Snow to see, be empathetic. There is a time for that, however, Snow is right too, there has to come a time when you need to change your mind set, and try and focus on the good things that happened in your career, yes even in WCW, like his awesome match with Benoit (the Owen Hart tribute match in 99) and him winning the world title, not to mention being part of WCW when it was winning the "Monday Night Wars". Before that though I think there needs to be forgiveness, he forgave Hickenbottom, he needs to forgive Goldberg as well and even Bischoff who he talks very negatively about.
It's sad as Snow said, in Bischoff's book (Controversy creates Cash), Bischoff said him and Bret got along and they had alot of things in common, they hit it off so to speak, it would be nice if they could put the past behind them and go back to that. The thing is, good bad or indifferent, what's done is done, and can't be undone, I know it's hard but Bret does need to move on and not be so bitter about the past, it's hard for me to type that last bit, I'm thinking about a certain individual.......I don't know if I'll ever be over what she did, but ........maybe I will one day.

Hmm lets see, he got screwed by Vince McMahon in 1997, then in 1999 at over the edge ppv his brother owen fell to his death over a stupid wwf stunt that didn't need to be done, then goldberg kicked him in the head so hard and ended his career and cost him millions, he's since had strokes and thankfully beat cancer, so yeh I wonder why he's negative the guy has gone through absolute hell, and lets face it when he was an active wrestler he really was the best there is the best there was and the best that there ever will be, nobody could lace his boots, he never injured a single wrestler in his whole career and he's one of only a few wrestlers that was so good he could make you suspend your disbelief, watching how smooth he could wrestle was poetry in motion, its no wonder cm punk absolutely idolizes the hitman!!!

  • @PiCheZvara
    @PiCheZvara 3 місяці тому +1

He lost Davey, Owen, others. He got fucked over on PPV after being 20 years with a company that he deeply cared about. He cared about Vince. He cared about Shawn. And then all this led to Owen dying, Bret getting injured by Goldberg, suffering a stroke.
And he probably feels in some ways those who hurt him never suffered from anything, never really paid the price for it. While he in his mind lost an incredible lot and still had to bite his pride to salvage his WWE legacy. And I think somewhere deep down, Bret hates he had to humble himself like this after being fucked over and it was either that or he gets cast out and forgotten like Warrior.
And Bret grew bitter as a defense mechanism, because he conisders himself too good a performer and a pro to be relegated to this. It's a defense mechanism at the end. He maybe also regrets leaving WWE in 1997 and not agreeing to lose to Shawn despite their issues, because that would be the consummate pro thing to do and Bret fancied himself as the consummate pro. And it would save him a world of trouble with Vince and others. He maybe also hated that while WCW didn't capitalize on the situation at all, Vince just became Mr. McMahon and turned fucking Bret over into a moneymaking success. And no one cared to not support the storyline because it's turning a real life screwjob into entertainment, which well, reminded Bret that people are fickle and not loyal like he was to the WWE at least.
A lot of hurt, pain, losses, indifference of those who hurt him, or lack of genuine remorse, them having better careers and lives, he lost his family, friends, health. And never got it back, only tiny bits of it. If he wasn't bitter at least somewhat, in his mind he feels he would probably just give up his pride, authority and control over his narrative, that he would just dismiss having his life irreversibly altered.
And it's also pride, Bret was always very proud. Him admitting he is bitter and wrong, means he lost and always was wrong. And he doesnt want to accept that.

Al not understanding why Bret is bitter about the wrestling business.
Here's a guess, unlike Al he was THE top guy in WWE at one point, the company that killed his brother. The business that allowed rampant drug use which helped kill Pillman, Bulldog, Niedhart and many other not just friends but actual family members.
He gets FORCED to leave WWE and is working with a guy who kicked him so hard he had a stroke a year or two later and ended not just his career but his lifelong passion started by his dad.
To say "I don't know why Bret would be bitter" might be the dumbest thing you'll ever hear

@@absolutez3r019 Bret had signed a 20 year contract with Vince McMahon, only for Vince to tell him a few months later that he couldn't afford to pay it and he should go to WCW - so yes, Bret did get forced out. And it's great that Droz was so positive about his career being ended, but everyone is different and everyone has the right to react differently. Did Droz also have a stroke like Bret did, which causes emotional problems and personality changes?

@@Bernicia295 maybe its because vince wanted to push new stars vince wanted to pay austin wat he was paying shawn michaels because it was Austin's time and then also the rock. To vince wrestlers are a commodity business there always has to be something new that they can make business with. Also considering the fact that bret and shawn would want no less than wat Austin and the rock get paid. The wrestlers egos.
