- Ticks and nature filmmakers know the truth today: The Lyme disease risk is serious. This year I have made a major change in camera gear. It's all because of the dramatic rise of tick populations is having a major impact on nature filmmaking, from preparedness to work safely in the field, to choosing gear, and using insect repellents. I'm no stranger to ticks and I have had my share over the years, but nothing compares to the past two years and the number of ticks that I've pulled off me and my clothing

How are you adapting to the new normal of way more ticks?
One word - permethrin. Read directions carefully about spray application to clothes, time to let dry, and washing treatment. At minimum, spray your backpack, shoes, outer socks, and pants.
I hate them!
Carrying a belt mount Thermacell device is a great idea like the MR300 or its variants. Non toxic and keeps bugs away in a 15 foot radius from you. I never go out in the woods without one anymore
Thanks. Going to look that up
In the past, this has really become a problem for me. It feels like I can't go anywhere in the bushes and such where I really want to go because I want a certain angle for some shots or photos. I use a 60 liter pack for my gear - I try to avoid taking it off and putting it on the ground for the reasons you mentioned - if I do, I also give it a good shake and a couple of hits to get rid of potential passengers before I put it back on. I've also tried lots of different sprays - but I don't know what to think of them. It's also important to search carefully your body after you've been in an area for ticks - it's best to do this with someone else. It is also important to check if some new species are around. Thanks for your video and your tip.
Yeah, those down low shots are especially a tick check afterwards now
@@GreggMcLachlan so true!
Turning a backpack around on the chest works fine. Also, full body lycra anyone?
Lycra body suits! Lol
@@GreggMcLachlan White lycra, of course
Good video and content thank you for the tips
Thanks
What a great video! Thank you!
Are you in an area known for lots of ticks? I’ve never heard of ticks being so prevalent.
Yes, I'm in a hotspot for deer ticks/Lyme disease. But overall, tick populations and their range have rocketed
