Unless you wanted to go back to Michigan to see family and friends, wouldn't it have been easier to use a closer Mexican Consulate such as Laredo, TX? Keep up the videos!

Hi, Becky! You will need to provide a permanent address in Mexico, so it is best to have your housing situation all sorted out since I've heard it can be a pain to do an address change with INM. It's doable...but, the fewer trips you have to make the better. You won't need to show a lease just give the address. Thanks for watching!

Hi, Kayla! Some businesses (like Host Relocation in Querétaro) will sign as the guarantor on your behalf. Another option that is becoming more popular is a poliza de juridica which is essentially a background check. You could ask potential landlords about that. Really, start simple and see if you can pay an additional month's rent to double the security deposit...it never hurts to ask!

Regarding economic solvency documentation: nowadays most employers and banks provide online access to pay stubs and statements that can be printed out. Do those tend to suffice? I know every consulate is different but I am looking for some anecdotal information based on peoples' experiences. I've already opened dialogue with my local consulate and will ask them in my next email. But just curious what others' experiences have been. I'm wondering if they expect something more "official" looking like from the old days when you got statements in the mail.
I am definitely more interested in going for temporary residency as I see no need to come back to the US. The only thing is that I have to wait a month before leaving to apply because I just recently had an increase in disability payments in order to show economic solvency. This is the only way that I can meet the time requirement of income (6 months). I will be cutting it short but hopefully the unfortunate pandemic has slowed down a lot of people applying at the local consulate office and having more timeslots for appointments for travel so that I can apply and have my sticker within 30 days at the most. I will not know however, until I apply in July...fingers crossed.

If you don't have a permanent address when you apply for residency, you can use your temporary address in the meantime (ie Airbnb address) but will need to go back to INM at a later date and apply for an address change.

Does that mean you have one visit and you need to spend the next 30 days there to qualify? or can you go down, with your new VISA, look for an apartment and begin your 30 days at some later date? Can you go to any consolette or does it have to be a state your from. We are traveling in our van and we are from WA state but living in FL for the Winter. Not really planning to go back to WA state but we have residency there. Thanks

QUESTION, to be clear if and when all goes well with the Temp Residency Appt, I have 6 months to travel to Mexico and while in Mexico 30 days to complete step 2 at the Mexican IM office in the area I wish to relocate to.? Did I get that right? Also, I am retired so I'm good for my proof of income; however, my niece who's applying for her Temp Residency too is a freeLancer. Hi, Maria! Yes, you've got it: Once your temporary resident VISA is in your passport, you have six months to travel to Mexico. You'll show the visa when you go through immigration & instead of getting the tourist visa stamp for 180 days, your migratory form will just be for 30 days. Within those 30 days, you need to go to the INM office in your city (or the closest office to where your living) to hand in the documents for your temporary resident PERMIT. At your appointment at the Mexican consulate, the official should explain all that to you, but you have it here now as well just in case. Best of luck at your appointment!

Hi, Glen. I recommend reaching out to the consulate where you plan on applying (email generally works best) & let them know what kind of documentation you have. I've heard of quarterly statements working as well as long as they go back a year.

Hi, great videos, great info. Question - what is the deal with taxation for expats working remotely for US companies? Most countries employ the 183 day rule for tax residency. Since a temporary resident's income numbers and source are made available to the Mexican government during the application process, I would imagine they have incentive to want their cut.
As a temporary resident, you're not taxed on income earned outside of Mexico.

As far as I remember, it's about about tax residency which comes from the number of days in the country (>183) as well as ties and center of interests in Mexico. Thus, it's not really connected to the visa you use to stay in Mexico. Well, at least officially that's how it should be, as far as I know.
Does the consulate need to see that the the actual names on bank statements match your employers name as stated on the official letter form employer
Been here 26 years. Informative video, well done. Just don't use the Mexican flag or the eagle on the nopal emblem on your lead page. It's illegal to use them for commercial purposes. Try the Aztec calendar instead. It's both recognizeable and legal.

It sounds like they immediately returned your passport that day of your appointment. If you had not received your visa that day, would you still have gotten your passport back that day? I have international travel planned (not to mexico) two days after my visa appointment and am trying to ensure I'll have my passport back (internet is providing inconclusive responses). 2. There's a few comments about an address here. Are you saying they asked for your prospective address in mexico at the consulate visit or later at the INM in mexico? Thanks in advance for your help!
Hi, Audrey! At the Detroit consulate, I got my passport/visa back the same day I applied. I think that's pretty standard practice across consulates. You can put whatever address you want down for Mexico (Airbnb, for example) but know that once you have more permanent housing you will need to register that change with INM in Mexico.

I'm in Albuquerque. This entire process is confusing me. Firstly, there's no consulate general, only a consulate. My understanding is that you can only get anything from the consulate general. I'm thinking, since there doesn't seem to be any other consulate in the entire state of New Mexico, the one in Albuquerque IS the the consulate general. Secondly, I receive ssdi and a small $300+ for retirement. This is the part that confuses me...do I have enough for temporary residency? My ssdi and my retirement amount are pretty much fixed. Are there special allowances for the disabled? Thirdly, if I will never be eligible for the temporary residency, because of my income, do I have to cross the border and reapply for a tourist visa every six months? Do I have to come back to Albuquerque and apply here or, is the tourist visa office at the border itself? I truly thank you for taking the time to answer this. It's a lot to read but, no one else is giving a straight answer.

Hi, Gevorg. In theory, you could use your Airbnb address. However, you will need to go back to INM and change it once you have a permanent address. As far as the employer letter, I recommend contacting the Mexican consulate (via email) to ask about your specific situation. But, the Mexican Consulate in Detroit wanted a letter from your employer to show that you'd been working there at least six months & how much your earned per month. The consulate didn't need documents translated, but again, you can double check with the specific consulate where you intend to apply. At the Mexican consulate in Detroit, I paid the visa processing fee with a credit card. Good luck with your temporary resident visa process!

Hello Alex! For the 3 years you lived in Mexico on your tourist visa, how for how long at a time did you leave and return when "resetting" your 180 days? Did you ever receive any questioning or hassle from immigration when you arrived due to your frequent long stays on the tourist visa? I will be applying for my temp visa (I'm a US citizen) next year, but concerned about getting denied entry before then as I travel in and out (will have spend about a year collectively in Mexico over a 15 month span by that time).
Hi, Laura! I never had any trouble going back and forth between Mexico & the U.S. I wasn't really making "visa runs" though. When I'd fly back to the U.S., it would usually be for a few weeks (sometimes even a month) to visit friends & family. I think the people who run into trouble are the ones who leave for one day exactly every six months. From what I understand, people tend to have more trouble with immigration when they cross into Belize or Guatemala and are trying to turn around and come back. I really don't think you will have a problem though, especially in the wake of the pandemic when Mexico wants tourists to come back.

Hi Alex: The consulate requires "Original and a photocopy of investment receipts or bank statements ...". Nowadays, to be Green, I just download the statements and stores them digitally, i.e. they are not mailed from the investment firm to me.
For your visa, did you present to the consulate 'original' financial documents that were mailed to you or did you print color copies? I'm not even sure how they can tell the difference between mailed copies and one's printed on a good laser printer. Thanks

Hi, thanks for watching! I recommend having your biggest and most consistent client (also the one that you have the best relationship with) write you the letter. The letter should state that you've worked with them for at least six months and how much you've earned on average each month. As you can see, the temporary residency process is tricky for freelancers since some don't have a single client that meets the financial requirements. But, if you have a big and consistent client, that should work. Some consulates will also accept an earnings print out from Upwork. I believe there's also a letter you can print from Upwork regarding proof of employment. I hope that helps!

You should use your address in your home country & then, the address of wherever it is plan to stay in Mexico (although, you might not need that second address until fill out forms for the second part of the process once you're in Mexico). If you're unclear about any fields, I recommend emailing the consulate ahead of time for clarification.
If your own country is online, then you can work in Mexico. No, once you make it through the visa step at the consulate, you're going to get your card in Mexico if you complete the rest of the steps.

Hi Alex, im planning on moving to Mexico. I live in Jacksonville, fl. I own two homes there, and im planning on retiring with the rents to these two homes totalling $1,975. Only problem is that im already on the road. Currently staying at a friends house in California. Do i have no recourse but to travel back to Florida to do this process or could i do it from the road? Or even as im entering to Mexico? i do have my american visa. I was planning on checking out Queretaro, renting a place and coming back to Florida to get the rest of my stuff. Thank you :-)
Don't worry: you should still be able to enter Mexico on the regular tourist visa (180-day stay). If you decide to go for temporary residency, you will need to start the process at a consulate outside of Mexico (possibly on your trip back to Florida). Safe travels!

No, it's not necessary. You don't need a history of traveling to Mexico to apply for temporary residency.

I don’t know if you will catch this message but I hope so, because I have a question regarding temporary visa requirements. I have watched several videos regarding the subject but didn’t notice a fee attached to the application. Are there different fees that a person pays for the temporary visa application process, depending on what year your application is being submitted (1st, 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year)? Thanks in advance.
When I filed my paperwork in Mexico, the temporary resident permit card costs $4,271 MXN (approx. $197 USD). That was in Aug. 2020. The prices do vary from year to year. I just renewed for three years & it cost over $8,000 MXN.

Looks pretty straightforward and relatively hassle-free. Question about the solvency: do they require you to have the $27K+ in one single account or can it be from many ones, provided you show proofs of overall financial solvency? The reason I am asking is that I invest in different funds.
The money is not the issue. I just don't keep a huge amount of money in a checking account.
If you can clearly show it in different accounts (at least the minimum over the required amount of time), you should be good to go!

I suggest emailing the specific consulate where you plan on having your visa interview. Applying for temporary residency as a self-employed person can be difficult as they sometimes require a letter from your employer.
So before you received residency, did you do "border" runs to renew the 180 days?

Good news if you qualify for the Temporary visa. With so many gringos being kicked out of Mexico (permanent tourists) the prices in real estate in Mexico are going to go way down. All those nice apartments where gringos used to live are going to be very cheap now. No regular Mexican can afford them, so if you qualify for a temporary visa you can buy real estate DIRT CHEAP now.

No, nothing like that! I was totally anticipating something like that after my experience applying for a visa in Spain. On the visa form, it asks if you have a criminal record in Mexico or any other country, but that's it!

Hi, Mark! Once you have your temporary resident card, you're free to travel back & forth as much as you'd like. If you need to leave Mexico will your temporary residency card is processing, you will need to apply for an exit visa.

But, since I had a position lined up there, I didn't need to prove economic solvency. Even though the Spain visa required more, I think it was easier for the reason.

Yes, it was! They will most likely greet you in Spanish, so I recommend knowing how to ask in Spanish if you can do the interview in English...it will help to make a good first impression!

Hi, Danielle! If your husband meets the financial requirements, he can apply and then you can link your residency to his once you're in Mexico. Also, if he is a Mexican citizen, you don't need any type of economic solvency to apply for residency. Good luck!

Hi, Rita. I encourage you to Google the list of countries whose passport-holders don't need a visa to enter Mexico. A Schengen visa is only good for countries in the Schengen Zone. Hope that helps!

Once you're married to a Mexican national, you are eligible for temporary residency with just your marriage certificate. You can skip the consulate step and do everything at INM in Mexico.

Hi Joel, thanks for watching! There are no travel restrictions in place for Mexico, but since January, you are required to show a negative test to re-renter the US after your visit.
You mentioned that you have 6 months to enter Mexico once you get your visa from a consulate. But I was curious when the 1 year starts on the visa? Does the 1 year start from the time you enter into Mexico?
That is a good question! I believe the one-year starts once you are approved for your temporary residency card (part 2 of the process) which you must apply for within 30 days of entering Mexico. I will record & upload another video once I complete that part of the process!

If you have a grandfather/mother father/mother from Mexico you can forego the visa and get Mexican citizenship....

I asked them for the pros/cons in choosing permanent over temporary residency. They looked at each other smiled back at me and said they weren't sure.
It was not my goal to become a citizen of Mexico, but wanted to avoid the hassle of relying on renewing a tourist visa.

I told them my goal was not to become a citizen but to live in Mexico indefinitely and have the freedom to buy/do what I want without having to leave the country to reset my "visa".
They could not tell me why I should choose Permanent and told me to go with the Temporary Residency and that I can change it later after I arrived in Mexico...
I tried to be amenable and said OK, but now, I probably should have pushed back a little and maybe selected the permanent residency -
Oh well, I'm sure it will work out fine - who knows what the future holds

It's not strictly savings. You can also show a portion of your wealth as investments.

Hi! You're eligible for residency through marriage, and because you're married to a Mexican citizen, you can do the whole process in Mexico. If there's a Mexican consulate in Jamaica, you could start the process there. Good luck!
