    Hi guys,
    I want to thankyou for inspiring me to repower my ferguson tea with same engine here in nz. I saw your comment about using vee belts and i have used dual belts via a jack shaft to a 12inch pulley on the input shaft. It works extremely well! I am very surprised at its pulling power. I was initially to conservative with gearing and had to gear it UP....13 hp is plenty for most jobs like towing our trailer loaded up with firewood. You can see it at kcrockshi account on yt. So again many, many thanks! Your tractor was a real eye opener for lots of us. Best wishes, stuart v.

    He has given this tractor a chance to work again. Great job! I have a 1945 oliver row crop 60 with a cracked block. This method may be just what is needed to get it going again as engine parts for an oliver are tough to find.

      I have a 2008 New Holland (30 HP) that broke in half doing loader work. They want $12,000 for a new motor. Needless to say the tractor is finished. I have an 883 Harley motor, I think I may make me a Harley Tractor. The 55 HP motor should do fine and I would have the baddest sounding tractor around. I would have 45 forward speeds and 15 reverse speeds! It is an air-cooled motor, but I think I will put an electric fan out of a car on it to help it stay cool at those low speeds. Hooking up the hydraulics will be the hardest part. I think I can take an aftermarket hydraulic pump and run it with the same chain used to run the motor. The only problem is I wouldn't have live hydraulics then. Any Ideas?

    Even though that soil is most sand, i am dully impressed. It looks like it would do most anything the stock power plant would do. Better add a few hundred pounds out front before you flip it over. Well done boys, well done.

      Front is heavier than it looks. The only time it gets light is if there is a very heavy draw bar tongue weight on it.

    I have a model 101 I should re-power like that,thanks for the idea

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  8 років тому +2

      +Kyle Tupper I think a 101 is much the same mechanically as the 33 but a few years older. The only thing I would change is try to use a belt drive instead of roller chain. Belts would be quieter and smoother.

    • @kyletupper7391
      @kyletupper7391 8 років тому +2

      I want to use belts instead,I have some double groove pulleys I'm going to try using,and an old 16hp iron block Briggs engine I may fix up to use.when your pulling hard in low gear,ever run out of power or will it spin out first? I like to run out of traction before power lol

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  8 років тому +4

      +Kyle Tupper The original engine in this tractor would have been running 1500 RPM rated speed and that is what the transmission and gearing are designed for. Most small motors like the this one are 3600 rated RPM. With the chain drive we have it down so the transmission input shaft is about 1000 RPM when the engine is at 3600. This was a bit of a guess as far as how much to slow it down but it has turned out about right. With the centrifugal clutch you can also only use the upper end of the engine speed. As far as running out of traction before power, in 1st gear on grass it will spin before the engine RPM drops to the point the clutch slips. On pavement or concrete I think the clutch would slip first. If using a clutch like tightening belts with idler pulleys, I think it would just barely spin on pavement. There are many advantages to a centrifugal clutch for stop and go and tug work, but for field work it is not the best. If you to go for a centrifugal clutch look for one with a bearing in the middle instead of a bronze bushing. Ours is a bronze bushing type and the bushing has gotten fairly worn and is not replaceable.
      How old about is the Briggs engine you have? I have heard good things about the older Briggs iron block engines but the more modern aluminum block engines I have worked with are not the best. Another thing to consider is the size of the pulleys. I think for 2 B size V belts at least a 4 inch pulley is needed to handle 16 hp. That would then mean that to reduce the speed at the transmission input shaft to 1000-1500 a 10 to 12 inch pulley or so would be needed. If you need other advice I can provide it as best I can.

    • @kyletupper7391
      @kyletupper7391 8 років тому +2

      it a early 70s briggs 16hp dont think it turnes as fast as yours so that may be a problem,I'd like to get a car trany to put in there to gear it down more,I dont think I can fit a big enough pulley inside the frame tub to keep from having belt slip or reduction poblems what do you think?

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  8 років тому +2

      +Kyle Tupper A slower RPM on the Briggs motor I would think would make it easier to size pulleys. Less of a difference would be needed to end up with 1000 to 1500 RPM at the transmission input shaft. I would think using a car transmission would be a lot more complexity as far as then needing to connect the car transmission to the tractor transmission and getting a pulley on the car transmission input shaft. I think most of them have some specific spline. I would have to go measure it but I think a 12 inch pulley would fit on the tractor transmission input shaft. If the Briggs engine you have turns at say 2500 RPM or so than a 6 or 7 inch pulley on it would let the tractor turn around 1500 or so.

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  6 років тому +4

      The chain lasts about a year or so, depending on how much heavy work you do. The clutch sprocket wore out and we had a new one welded on and the clutch drum is getting worn but it has been six years with a lot of very hard clutch usage.

      @@jore551 I'm no expert, but my understanding is the input shaft on this tractor is just the one. The pto will only operate when the one input shaft is turning. On a live pto, the inner shaft ( inside the drive clutch input shaft ) is turned by the crankshaft all the time for pto use, and the outer shaft is only spinning when the clutch is engaged for transmission use. Thats sounds confusing to me, and I wrote it. LOL!.
