  • A Massey Harris 33 (I had first thought 44) that sat without a motor for many years. Pulled out of the woods and cleaned up and repowered with 13 hp Powerfist air cooled engine. A centrifugal clutch was used for many reasons. This tractor has lots more power than we thought it would have considering it was originally about 50 hp. Plus it steers very tightly. Note that the photos have no sound.

    I think what you did was very clever and simple. For very little cost and time invested you turned what would have been a scrap tractor into a useful machine. Good on you...

    Old tractors have the spirit in them. The new ones are like empty plastic shells. It's like grandmoms dinner vs. service station meal.

    It is capable of pulling much more than we thought. A 2 ton hay wagon is no problem even on up hills. We also pull a ground drive hay rake at about 4 mph on hills and a ground drive manure spreader at 3-4 mph. The very surprising thing to us was that it would also pull and power a Massey #9 baler in first gear. The gas usage is almost laughable at about 1 - 2 liters per hour at full load. That compared to the JD 1010 at about five times as much for a bit more power but a lot less efficient.

    I used a Hilliard extreme duty go kart clutch bought at Princess Auto. So far the clutch has not warn out after lots of work though you can smoke it in 5th gear starting uphill. The clutch has a 14 tooth #40 chain sprocket and the other sprocket on the transmission input shaft is 52 teeth I think. That slows the 3600 RPM motor down to about 900 at the transmission and the original motor was 1350 RPM. If I were doing it over I would use a 48 tooth sprocket for a little higher ground speed.

    The final drive I am not sure about but nothing has changed in the transmission differential or final drives from the stock version. The total gear ratio must be very low though as it is still on the stock 12.4 38 rear tires. At 1:40 in the sprocket is bolted on to the transmission main input shaft with six 5/16 bolts double nutted. Getting it lined up in the center was hard but worth it. Drilling the sprocket was fairly easy with a drill press and cheap soft sprocket steel.

    Price. We looked at other options, electric, old car or motorcycle engines, old tractor engines, and small diesels. I admit a small diesel would have been my first choice for being longer lasting and better torque and power but the one air cooled diesel was close to a $1000 and liquid cooled ones out of tractor or something else would have been more. The other main reason for going with air cooled gas was simplicity and ease of maintenance. Any other questions please ask.

    There are many others models of old tractors that this could work well on. The fitting of motor and drive would be a little different with each one but many models should work well. Any other questions just ask.

    You know would be great on this set up? A snowmobile clutch!

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  5 років тому +3

      I am not familier with how those work but it might be better if it would work at the lower RPMs of these motors.

    • @EasternExplorer
      @EasternExplorer 5 років тому +2

      @@RattieRanch Maybe the ATV version would be better? They run at very low RPM's. Its the same setup as a snowmobile clutch. It really all depends on what springs you use. The stronger the spring the more rpm you need. Put a softer spring in it and it wont take as much to engage.

      do it, if you have not already, nothing new today beats the ride and durability of the old tractors, says the the guy who got rid of an old TO30 Fergie (blown up engine) and never thought of repowering it, got a 50 years newer TC 30 newholland, for $15,000 and I am no better off for it

    Why didn’t you go direct to the main shaft and use the stock clutch? The centrifugal clutch is your weak link. I love the project!!!

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  3 роки тому

      The original clutch was on the engine flywheel and that was all long gone. The centrifugal clutch has held up very well but the chain has been the most troublesome.

    Was searching around on UA-cam to see if anyone had done this and you have. This is so neat. Would it run a 5 ft brush hog? What other tractors do you think this would work on?

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  8 років тому +1

      I think it would take a bit to get it spinning but it would be alright cutting light stuff like topping pastures and such. I don't think it would be able to cut heavy grass without at least a 20 hp or more. Most of these older tractors have only transmission PTO making it harder to start the bush hog and the wheels at the same time. Also a over running clutch would be a good idea.
      The Massey Harris tractors seem well suited to this type of conversion because they the motor was not part of the frame. I think some Cockshutt and Oliver and maybe a few Farmalls had a that was not dependent on the motor to hold it together.
      I have to say though, If I were doing this again I would look for a way to use a belt drive instead of chain. Quieter, less of a mess, and should be more trouble free.

    • @Lanninglongarmmowing
      @Lanninglongarmmowing 8 років тому +1

      +RattieRanch Thanks for the reply. Harbor freight sells a 22 HP horizontal shaft motor that would probably work. More power too like you said. I'd love to see you get the hood and grill put back on it or get one for it. Very impressive. You should be really proud of yourself for doing this. Those engines on old farm equipment can be temperamental because it's liquid cooled, a points system etc.

    So no manual clutch, right? How do you shift from gear to gear? Just slow down the engine to disengage the centrifugal clutch? Incredible build.

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  5 років тому

      Yes, the centrifugal clutch is the only clutch. Changing gears is just like that, let of throttle, usually stop, change gear and then throttle up again.

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  10 років тому +2

      Hard to say. In terms of making us money, no, as we are don't make any. In terms of hassle and bother of unhooking to other tractor just to move a little trailer around or something, yes very much so. It is also very useful for haying time be able to rake and bale or baler and haul at the same time. Nowhere is it more a time and annoyance saver though than for manure spreading. One year we only had the loader tractor to do it with. Hooking and unhooking gets old really fast.

    So, how has the centrifugal clutch held up over time? If I were looking at doing this to a Massey 44 and was looking at using 18hp or so, what would you use for a clutch on a setup like that?

    • @RattieRanch
      @RattieRanch  10 років тому +2

      Thanks for asking.
      Fairly well. The tractor has been in steady use since June 2012 and gets about 30 or so hours a year on it. I can tell the bushing in the clutch is getting worn and is needing oil but other than that there has been no noticeable change in the clutch shoes or drum. As far as I can find the Massey 44 was very similar to the 33 as far as gearing, tires and had about 5 more hp but the 33 weighed a few hundred pounds more. The clutch we used is a Hilliard Extreme Duty go kart clutch www.hilliardextremeduty.com/extremeduty/
      because it was not to expensive and was available without special orders.
      I did find this website www.heeters.com/kartclutches.shtml and they have one clutch rated at 40 hp for 4 stroke engines. I don't understand though how that would work as theres is still only 4 1/2 in diameter and the one I used is about the same diameter so without making a larger one I do not see how it would do any better. The Hilliard one I use is fine for most places but if trying to start on a uphill with a load in higher than first gear it will smoke and not go. It is quite fine for pulling uphills and hard spots once it is going but really lacks being able to use the torque the engine can put out for starting off from a stop. Some more thoughts on clutches. I was concerned about engine braking with a centrifugal clutch but it turns out it is not a problem and works very well. The small engine size provides not much slowing though. I will add more later; it is getting late here.

      This is a 33 as far as we can tell. The motor and hood were gone 30 years before we found. It could all still be put back to original with some parts but that would be more money and complexity.
      Also I don't think I ruined it as much as the scrap guy behind me wanted to.
