Great video Jonny!!! Put some boiled linseed oil on the handle. Do it once a day for a week then once a week for a month then once a month for a year. Then once /twice a year there after. I suggest sanding the handle prior to first application of Linseed oil. Start out with say 120 then finish with 220 or so. Use 000 steel wool in between linseed oil applications. You will not believe the finish it puts on the handle and they way it makes the handle look and feel. It makes all the difference in the world.
Awesome, thanks for the tips Larry. Have heard of using the linseed oil for shovel handles and axes but have never tried it. Will have to pick some up next time to the hardware store 😁👍
01:52 Dude! I had no idea about that. Makes sense though. I am literally replacing a shovel handle as I type this. Sweet tip! 😃
Awesome, happy I could help 🙌👍
Not bad! I thoroughly enjoyed how you improvized! Real Men!
Thank you! 👍
Thanks for the tip about the wood grain.
You're welcome, happy to help 👍
Thanx for the tips. Ive been trying to fix my shovel on a very strict budget. Joy from Tennessee. 😊
You're welcome, glad I could help you out 👍
Wish I'd thought of using the grinder before I threw out the last shovel. Thanks for this!
You're welcome! Happy to help 👍
Glad I watched this before jumping into my handle replacement. Would have really f'd it up going in blind. Thanks Jonny!
😄 You're welcome! Glad I could help you out 👍
This helped me to fix my 30-yr-old forged shovel, didn't realize the cheap stuff they make out of plate metal these days. The shovel sold by A.M. Leonard is 12 gauge, forged, and Amazon is only 16 gauge, some are only 14. Get the strongest, it is worth it. Thanks!
Nice, happy I could help.👍 Yes this head I used was an old American head. I believe Union brand. New stuff has gotten cheap it seems.
Excellent video and exactly what I needed. Most appreciate you. 👍👍👍
Thanks Chuck! Glad it was helpful 👍
It doesn't go all the way in because it's supposed to curve inside the head...
This is the part I'm trying to look up.
I've cut a slice in the bottom few inches of the handle before, but I'm wondering if some people soak the bottom in water or oil before installing.
Im guessing they probably use heat and water and probably insert them in with some sort of hydraulics
😊 Nice man but I bought wooden shovel handle slightly curved now which side goes up higher-up or down?
I would probably put the curve up 👍
Thank you brother. I needed this video to handle an axe head that actually has a hole in it for this type of handle unlike a typical wood cutting axe. My axe is a two hander used for fighting in a sport called Buhurt. Thanks 🙏🏻 again
You're welcome, glad to help. Whoa never heard of Buhurt, sounds wild! Be safe 👍
@@JonnyDIY type Buhurt in UA-cam. And enjoy… 😎
Good job. Thank you!
@@amyreaves8054 Thanks! And you're very welcome, happy I could help you out 🙌👍
Ive never in my 58yrs seen a handle come out that easy.
😆 guess I just got lucky that day 👍
Great video. Exactly what I need. Thanks.
Thanks & you're welcome 👍
Why didn't you sharpen the cutting edge of the shovel before painting? I've also heard letting metal parts soak in a vinegar bath will remove all rust. Then you could rinse well and dry and use a file on the edge. Looks good painted, but I have the best luck with sharp tools.
Edge was pretty sharp, I usually don't sharpen shovel heads unless they get dinged or edges rolled. Yes vinegar works great you're right, have used on rusty tools before 👍
Some Handles come should come with pins also that saves you a step!
That would have been be nice! 😄👍
Thanks, great video
You're welcome, and thanks happy to help 🙌👍
Nice, thanks for sharing!!
You're welcome 👍
Good video
@@henribui9934 Thank you! 🙌👍
Good job!
Thanks John! 😁👍
What size bolts did you use?
Probably 1/4"
Thank you! Cant share a pic of the new shovel lol but its all done now!
@@willisfarnsworth7844 Awesome, glad you got it done 👍 And you're welcome, happy to help
Thanks! 😊
You're welcome! Glad to help 👍
I really like that you didn't wear gloves! I don't care how small a task is, every youtuber wears gloves for everything. Gluing wings back on butterflies, gotta wear gloves.
@@timothytacner4865 😆 lol totally! 🦋🧤
His saw-horse-game is weak but he video was really helpful!
Lol, those are pretty cool. The metal legs can fold and be compact for transport. Then you just open them up and they clamp on a 2x4 or 2x6. I made some nicer ones recently. More conventional all wood, but folding. Nice thing about making own is I could make them the right height for a normal man not mini ones 😆
Good as new 👌
Haha yeah my Dad saw it and was like you bought a new shovel!? Haha
@@JonnyDIY 😀
Cool stuff! Where did u get the replacement stick ?
?
Home Depot, Lowes and Ace should have as well. Just pick a straight one with nice straight grain pattern. Think was True Temper brand 👍
Perfect thanks buddy
How many shovels did you do to sound so tired at the end??
Lol this was side project while redoing the house for sale. Was probably tired too, sleeping on air mattress haha
Could you do a video on how to fix the handle of a saucepan that’s coming off? Thank you.
I'll keep in mind if I run across one. Usually theyre just held on by a screw or two, but depends which kind of handle it is. Some are riveted on.
Thanks!
Yes I came on here to to tell you its a spade
Where I'm from they're all just called shovels. Square tip and round tip. Some call round tip, spades 👍
I call square shovels “transfer” shovels because they are usually used for moving more mass material than a pointy shovel.
Cheers mate
Cheers! Thanks for watching 👍
You may have used the wrong replacement handle as the wood has a perpendicular collar, and your shovel head shaft collar is beveled diagonally. Viewers, won't get a good seating of the shovel head unless they get diameters tight so as to have good surface contact throughout the neck.
Thanks for that, I think this may have been the only style available at that time, my Uncle bought it. Looks like I needed a bent hollowback handle to fit perfect. Have never seen one of those locally. That would have been a perfect replacement for that head though. Thanks for pointing out 👍
@@JonnyDIY i think you meant a razorback, (one that doesn't have a collar). Im challenged with finding the right handle also, I haven't seen any good examples on how to install a solid bent into a shovel. I figure they must saw the insertion end against the grain so it becomes more flexible making the end not solid and maybe soak in water for flexibility and trimming a little off to help the bend not break
Use steam to bend it.
Always knew I should I refit old shovels, but like a lame ass.. I just bought new ones. Not next time though lol
I feel u on that!
Lol it was quite a bit of work, if theyd just use bolts instead of rivets would make it a 5 minute job
👍
That shovel did not have a point.
A "spade shovel" should have a point.
I also bevel the edge and they slice through dirt and roots like a hot knife through a stick of butter
Nice, good idea on sharpening the edge 👍
