- Stoked to finally be putting out a video like this. Sorry for not talking much about each set up, i knew the video would be pretty long already, so i tried to keep it as short as possible. These are all of my personal rods I use for yellowtail and other big game fish.

I like your setups and the reasons why you do it,,cause I'm really about the same, especially that Metaloid setup. great video Man,,
Bruce Truong thanks man. I appreciate it
Great video bro love the rod Christmas tree lol ur the man 🎣happy hunting 🎣
Richard Rodriguez thanks man I appreciate it. Haha the rod Christmas tree.
That 9ft Proteus is awesome! I have one paired with a Tranx400 for poppers. Nice vid!
Fishing on SoCal Sportboats oh man I’m jealous! That sounds like an amazing feeling set up!
Nice! Currently watching this in the school yard while it's raining.
Brian Villasenor haha nice! It’s been pouring lately. Haven’t been able to fish a whole lot
Thanks for the Shout Out Ray!!! Glad you liked that 9 footer. Can't wait to share the rail with you brotha!!! Let's make it happen soon. Tight lines and keep up the great vids coming.
REELDEALJOJO Orozco thanks man! It feels amazing! I forgot to film a first cast with it. But I definitely will soon with a review. It fricken slings irons man! We will definitely share the rail soon for sure!
Dirty Hookers it does sling them. I had my lexa 400 on it and that's a awesome iron set up!
REELDEALJOJO Orozco Hell Yeah! Can’t wait to feel a fish on the other end of it
Was going to ask you why you havent told us about your surface irons, glad I watched this one! Oh, thanks for teasing us about the free give away!
jay bates lol yeah I put out that video acouple weeks ago. I’ll do a video on the actual irons I throw soon. And the give away video will be up as soon as I possibly can. It’s gonna be a busy weekend but I’m going to try
Love these videos. Thanks so much for all the info you’re able to share. Question: If you are starting out and want to fish the islands but you can only bring 3 setups, which ones? I’m just starting to buy some new gear and kinda wanted to know where to start with all the different ones you have going on. Thanks.
I’m always happy to help!
If there were only 3 set ups I were gonna bring, it’d be a fly line rod, a surface iron rod, and a yoyo rod. The yoyo could also be used as a dropper loop rod for when they wanna eat bait on the bottom or even when fishing is tough and the boat goes rockfishing to fill the bags
I'm always lurking for arsenal videos.. this is a good one!
FancyClown thanks I appreciate it. I felt bad not talking a whole lot about each rod but it was a long video already
I love ur channel, u deserve more subs.
Zack Kay lol thanks. I really appreciate that.
Great vid bro . Keep em coming
Brandon Huntress thanks. I’m tryin. Making videos in this weather has been difficult but I’m tryin
Dude it's been 2 years since this video was released, need an update with the current set ups

What rod are you using for live bait
@@Dirty.Hookers should do another one now that a year has passed
@@jackofalltrades5904 I put this one out recently.

Congrats on Phenix rod!!!! Couldn’t comment on the other vid.
Yeah sorry about that. The comments were turned off for some reason, but it’s fixed now!
Thanks man!
Keep it up bro! Good video
Gabe St. Hilaire thanks man! I’m tryin. Lol making content is hard with the weather lately
Those are some bad ass setups. I only have 6 saltwater set ups that cover 20-50lb line
C4 Bassin what’s up man! I’ve been watching your channel for awhile now! But thanks man I appreciate it. You have all sizes needed for basically any fish though so your good. But yeah I like to have each rod for specific styles of fishing
Awesome setups
Ian Santos thanks! Haha Is it bad that I want more?
Hey man. Been binging through your videos since I've found your channel. For someone who is new to charter fishing, which setup would you recommend someone to start out with before they start investing into more gear? Thanks!
James Park what’s going on james sorry seeing this late lol finally catching back up with my comments. Lmk how your trip goes tomorrow and message me if you have anymore questions!
Hey brotha!!! Just curious what your line setup is for the metaloid. Do you do the same for rock fishing and fly lining? This vid is over a year old, are you still pairing it with the Californian? I am looking at the Okuma PCH Custom 8’ 20-50#. But the Cali is a bit cheaper. Keep up the good work! Gotta get that fan based charter trip set up catered by Ballast Point!!
The19mustang67 yeah this video is pretty old. My metaloid I have I think 50 or 65 lb braid and my top shot varies for what I’m targeting. Rockfishing I usually do 30. Any kind of lures I always go 40. And if I fly line, I’ll use 25 or 30 with and a 6ft leader of matching size flouro carbon.
I pair it up with the California the most but will switch it around and put it on lighter rods too. if you end up getting the PCH I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Both are great rods!
Hello! What is the difference between your okuma sct and the phenix m1 inshore? I want to use it for throwing irons and general fishing too.
ButeoLineatus my m1 inshore is only a 7’9” which I really wouldn’t recommend for throwing surface irons. If you are trying to fish irons I recommend 8’ minimum, I personally don’t like casting anything shorter then 8’6 which is where the sct comes into play. The sct also isn’t so long to the point where it’s unfishable with other techniques. It’s still fine to trip yo yo and cast live baits if needed.
The m1 inshore does come in a 9’ size but I personally haven’t felt one myself. 9’ is around the size of strictly irons though. Not that it can’t be used for other techniques, but the longer rods make it more difficult for getting extra leverage on the fish
Good job 👍
Kevin 213 thank you very much
Hey man great video! Been watching your videos for a little while now great stuff!!. I haven’t fished for any pelagic fish before and hope to do a trip this next year, my arsenal so far is an Abyss 808 paired with avet mxl, M1 79h with lexa 400, and phenix titan longfall 711mh 30-80 with lexa 300, it’s a newer rod but similar to a trevela super light but very strong. Are those enough to get in some yellowfin? Should I add another set up?
Goldblooded 707 that’s all 3 sets ups you would want for fishing yellowfin off shore and yellowtail as well.
I was using my lexa 300 earlier in the yellowfin bite, and as the season progressed with bigger fish I switched over to my 400
Thanks for the reply man much appreciated, I do mostly sturgeon and striper fishing being from the Bay Area, this is something I really want to try out and it’s very different lol
Goldblooded 707 that’s so badass! I’ve been wanting to make a trip up north to target sturgeon, striper, and salmon. I just feel like I’d have to make 3 trips and target 1 each time lol.
Yeah SoCal is a very unique and very different style of fishing for sure. From Channel Islands to Baja are the only places you can catch yellowtail in the US. With yellowtail being pretty much our only year around game fish, it’s really influenced the SoCal style.
Good chance at knocking out sturgeon and striper on the same fishing trip November is prime for them and both can be caught year round as well but I’d say fall striper bite gets hot and sturgeon picks up. For salmon they can be caught too trolling the Sacramento River and parts of the delta usually October-November it gets good. Also salmon charters from April to the end of October out of SF.
Goldblooded 707 all very good information thank you!
Hopefully I can knock offshore acouple species next season!
What are your thoughts on running straight braid to irons? Have you tried it? I've seen guys doing it, thought of setting my new rig up like this
Will Fishing I’ve personally never tried it. I’ve seen people do it too but I’ve also heard people saying the don’t like it because they pull the hook too often on the bite. I usually do about a rods length of 40# for irons. That way I have some kind of stretch when I get bit.
Hi I really liked your video. Would a 30-60 line pound rod work well with 50 pound braid for yellow tail?
Alex Pham yeah that’s totally fine. On my 400 baitcasters, I use 50 lb braid. For my conventional reels like my Trinidad or saltist, I use 65 lb braid
What are your thoughts for the okuma sct inshore rod does it hold up well for yellows and calicos.
Still one of my favorite rods to date, but unfortunately Okuma discontinued the sct inshore
great videos ! if you ever stop by Cabo San Lucas I would like to take you out fishing and get a video killing it out here with you bro
That would be rad, I’ve always wanted to get out to Cabo for a fishing trip! So many bucket list fish I wanna check off out there!
Hey Ray! What lbs test is on that "rat stick" the one that has the Lexa 300 on it? It's for small yellowtail, bonita and calico? Thanks!
Fisher Newb 40 lb braid and either 30 or 40 lb top shot
@@Dirty.Hookers Thank you! I just won a LExa 300 and immediately thought of your video. Appreciate the advice!
Fisher Newb anytime man! Always happy to help and congrats on the new reel 👊!
I use the the Phenix PHD, PSW and AXIS HAV rods in the XH weight (30- to 80-pound) because they are perfect rods for yoyoing
I’ve been using the phenix PSW 30-80 for yoyo over the last 2 years, but I definitely think the axis would be a better fit for yo-yos.
The hybrid is too much of a broomstick for my personal likings.
@@Dirty.Hookers a "broomstick" lol Fair enough. Thanks for the honest reply!
@@DeeDeevanGogh lol yeah, just a little too stiff. The amount of backbone it has is awesome, but I like to have a little bit of tip to absorb a little bit of the head shakes and the first initial strike
Nice video man
Frankin Huerta thanks brotha!
is the californian rod heavy to fish? I've gotten people say that it's heavy to fish all day
I W I personally don’t think so. It might be because of the reel they use. But in my opinion it’s not heavy
the protuis rods are awesome
Love the proteus rods!
Question. Gear recommendations with the Lexa 400 HD paired with a M1 82H? Planning to use it anywhere from calico, bass, and the lighter set up for yellowtail? Thank you!
That will be perfect, you’ll even be able to use it for yellowfin during the summer too!
Yellowtail up to 12 lbs and yellowfin up to 20 lbs, and still have fun casting at calicos that’ll be a fun set up
@@Dirty.Hookers thanks man! Would you recommend a 8.1 ratio for the lexa or should I use something smaller?
@@bakayo2 if you already have it, it’ll work just fine. I do prefer the 6:1 for the additional pulling power, or the 7:1 as a good inbetween
great video, which one do you recomend the best that has a cast control idealy to cast tady 45 jigs, money is not an issue, right now i have a tern2 from accurate 500 model just wondering if there is something out there better ,wondering about a raptor mlx with cast control...is there a specific reason why you select star drags over lever drag...i feel lever drags cast well like a valiant 500 it just lacks cast control
Most people fishing surface irons will fish star drag reels because all you have to worry about is the tension knob to dial in the reel to your likings.
Most lever drag reels don’t have a cast control dial, so at full free spool it’s more likely to back lash. But there are a handful of lever drags out there with cast control if you prefer the lever drags.
My go to is the Daiwa Saltiga Star Drag, it has a really good breaking system built in behind the side plate for easier casting
@@Dirty.Hookers thank you, just got the tern 2 with cast control but thinking about an Avet raptor mxl with cast control… I like having the two speed option
@@2derekjeter2 so for yellowtail, I’m my personal opinion, you really don’t need the low gear option. I really like low gear reels for fishing bigger tuna.
With smaller fish like below 80lbs, I’ve noticed are more likely to charge the boat, and being stuck in low gear while they start swimming at you it’s hard to reel fast enough to keep the line tight
@@2derekjeter2 but 2 speeds definitely are beneficial when the fish is straight up and down and being stubborn!
I know this video is old, but you know i keep up with your videos, now having bought a lexa 300, in your opinion does it REALLY have 22 lbs of drag? Took it rockfishing last month and it felt like it was "slipping" idk how to describe it
Rogelio Bravo lol I was literally thinking of older videos yesterday thinking like “damn those videos aren’t nearly as informative as what I do now”.
The 300 I wouldn’t say 22lbs but maybe like 16-18 lbs. which is still more then enough.
Did you put any kind of tape on the spool before putting the braid on? If the braid has nothing to bite on to, it tends to slip
@@Dirty.Hookers yea the specs on their website are nowhere close to reality lol also the line capacity is off, and yes i did put some tape at the bottom, i used masking tape and tied the line with a san diego knot then spooled it up, i guess it mightve just been me lol this mo day im going to make sure the drag is set correctly hopefully ill land a good yellowtail
@@Dirty.Hookers also what pound line are you using to cast those flats?
Rogelio Bravo hell yeah! Good luck! Lmk how you do. And flat falls, yo-yo, and surface I use 40 # mono
Hello! Do ya think the phenix abyss psx809 is a god rod for a shimano torium 20? Thanks
Thanh Tran if you’re looking to throw irons. The 20-50 abyss should be fine but nothing lighter then that. If you can find a 9ft 20-50 that’s be good. I usually only come across 8ft 20-50.
Thanh Tran if you’re just looking for a yo-yo rod and live bait rod then the 8ft would be fine. But definitely the 20-50 abyss is what if go with
Going out to Baja next week they’ve been catching em in surface irons, hopefully will catch my first surface iron fish

Any recommendations for a offshore beginner?
Daiwa Lexa 400 hd with a jig stick 65 pound braid and 25 pound florou carbon for the yt and yft also smaller bluefin
use light line to cast farther into the wind
Love this video. What would you pair a daiwa tatula lexa HD 400 with?
Lexa 400, I really like inshore style rods. Like a 15-40# or 20-50# 8’ stick.
Phenix black diamond
Daiwa proteus inshore
Okuma guide select
Okuma PCH inshore
Phenix M1 inshore
Any of those would be a good pair, and most should be at most socal tackle shops. I’d recommend going in to a local shop and getting a feel for acouple and see which one you like best
@@Dirty.Hookers do you think it'll pair well with the dobyn 908? Want to keep it still fresh water.
@@theolovaj4844 not familiar with that one. What’s the specs on it?
Considering getting a proteus also what is the strength rating on yours
Can’t remember what that one was rated for, my dad lost that set up shortly after.
But personally, if I were to get one for casting, I’d get the 8’10” 20-50# stick
By any chance does your friend still have any 9' or 10' proteus rods let me know thank you
He does not. I bought his last 9’.
I casted a 8’10” proteus pretty recently and it loads up pretty nicely
Sup bro I just got the lexa 400 HD 8.1 gear and would like to know what line would you recommend for the lexa
Christian Gallardo If you plan on fly lining, I’d get 50# j-braid or power pro super slick. If you’re gonna throw irons, 50# power pro max cuatro
Appreciate it bro , do you have instagram?
Christian Gallardo no problem man! Yeah my Instagram is @RaySharifi
Hey boss what are the sizes of the reels and what pound test would you use ?
For yellowtail you’ll want a reel size of a shimano 14-20, Daiwa 30-40, Penn 20-30, and Okuma 5n-10.
Fly line, 20-30lb mono with matching fluoro leader
Artificials, 40-50 lb mono
And dropper loop, 30-40lb mono.
I’ll attach a link where I went a little more in depth about it

How do you feel about tatula 300 for tuna and yellowtails n snook n tarpon?
I personally haven’t used a tatula of any size yet. I wanted one when it first came out but my buddy was telling me the line doesn’t stack evenly because of the T Bar line guide
Has of will it handle, it’ll probably be okay. Idk what the drag power is on them, but I’ve been using komodo and Lexa 300’s for small tuna and yellowtail for years
Next video should be of you cleaning the yard!!! 😎😎
Hector Rodriquez lol it is getting pretty bad. I’m too lazy haha
Is a 15-30 rod good for yellow tail fishing??
Jose Arroyo yep. That’s perfect for fly lining!
And wats good to throw jiggs with??
Jose Arroyo minimum 8’6” I prefer 20-40 lb range or even 20-50
What is the best/affordable set up for just now getting into yellowtail fishing
Daniel Martinez for just getting into it, I would recommend checking Facebook or Craigslist first because people sell extremely nice stuff for really cheap! What’s the price you’re trying to spend?
@@Dirty.Hookers I was thinkin like 3-400
Daniel Martinez that’s the perfect range for a nice setup. If you’re not in a rush, Fred hall show in Long Beach is a month away. The past 2 years they’ve been giving a free rod with the Lexa HD at the turners booth, and you’ll be able to get a free braid fill up on the reel. That right there would be a good set up to start with. And it’ll only be about $250 +tax.
Other then that I’d say check out a turners outdoors store if there is one near you. A daiwa saltist star drag reel is I believe about $150-$175. And a California tri helix rod should be around the same price which should add up to the price range you’re willing to spend.
But those California rods will have a crazy sale on them at the Fred hall show as well so I’d say try and see if they’ll give you the sale price. If not then maybe wait for the Fred hall show for some good deals. It’s an awesome experience. I’ve gone 4 years and i get more and more excited to go every year!
Daniel Martinez sorry didn’t mean to send so much. Just trying to help as much as possible. This is the link to last years fred hall show just so you can get an idea if you’ve never been

Jeff Gonzalez for sure. I’ll add you right now!
For yellowtail do you think 40 lb fluorocarbon is to big? Also, do you think a ugly stik tiger rod would work?
Noah van den Boom yeah we used to fish the tiger conventional rod on every trip. 40lb would be too heavy for yellows if you’re using live bait. For lures 40 is enough. But for live bait I do 30 lb and if the fish are really finicky I bring a spool of 20lb flouro and do about a 4-6 ft leader
Dirty Hookers is the rod good for dorado yellowtail, and smaller tuna?
Noah van den Boom yeah it’ll work. The rod isn’t what you need to worry about. The biggest worry would be the reel. As long as you have a durable reel you’ll be fine.
Dirty Hookers sorry for all these questions but im just making sure im buying the right gear. Do you know any reels under $100? And should I get medium heavy action rod or heavy?
?

Good video. I like the wrapping on your rod, you should do a video on that. Surprised to see the low profile baitcasting reels ... are those sturdier enough for 50 lbs Yellowtail ? Why no Avet lever drag casting reels ... seem like the most versatile do it all reel. No Seigler Made in USA guaranteed for life ? Finally, glad to see you are not using spinning gear ... the top end spinning reels are way expensive, and I prefer a conventional rod and reel.
rhino ranch I wanna make a video wrapping another custom rod. The bait casters can handle 50 lb yellows. But that’s about as big as I personally would fish for with them. I would prefer a conventional reel for anything over 30 just to be safe. I do like the avets but I only really like levee drags for fly lining a live bait and for 2 speeds. Other then that I’d rather have a star drag because they’re easier to cast. I actually do want 1 spinning set up mainly for poppers but you’re right they are very expensive and at that price I can get a conventional reel and rod for the same cost of a good spinning reel
thanks for the reply ... you owe it to yourself to take a look at SEiGLER star drag magnetic casting reel. Designed for long distance surf casting [ 200 + yards] and capable of casting heavy lead. Seigler also makes conventional star drag and lever drags reels. So many great products to choose from. Shimano TranX looks cool, but $500 can buy a lot of gear.
rhino ranch yeah I was between the tranx and the Trinidad and realized for $500 I’d rather have a conventional so I went with the Trinidad. Also there’s a lot more line capacity so that’s better. I’ll look into those reel. Thanks man!
rhino ranch I’ve definitely heard the name before but I’ve 100% never seen one of these reels. These are sweet! I might have to get one! Thanks for the info. I appreciate it

I USED TO GET A "KICK" OUTTA YOUS GUYS WHEN I WORKED THE BOATS IN SD! ALL THOSE POLES AND GOT OUTFISHED BY THE GUY WHO ONLY HAD 1? ALL SHOW LOL
I take about 3 or 4 rods depending on what we’re targeting. I’ve seen people bring more, and I’ve seen others bring less. All just comes down to what style of fishing each person likes to do.
If all you wanna fish is bait, then you’ll only need 1 rod.
If someone wants to fish surface irons if the fish come up, or yoyos if they’re deep, and still have a fly line set up to fall back on, that’s 3 rods right there, but they might’ve only used 1 or 2 the whole trip depending on conditions.
All comes down to the person and what’s available to fish for
