  • Stoked to finally be putting out a video like this. Sorry for not talking much about each set up, i knew the video would be pretty long already, so i tried to keep it as short as possible. These are all of my personal rods I use for yellowtail and other big game fish.

      If there were only 3 set ups I were gonna bring, it’d be a fly line rod, a surface iron rod, and a yoyo rod. The yoyo could also be used as a dropper loop rod for when they wanna eat bait on the bottom or even when fishing is tough and the boat goes rockfishing to fill the bags

    Hey brotha!!! Just curious what your line setup is for the metaloid. Do you do the same for rock fishing and fly lining? This vid is over a year old, are you still pairing it with the Californian? I am looking at the Okuma PCH Custom 8’ 20-50#. But the Cali is a bit cheaper. Keep up the good work! Gotta get that fan based charter trip set up catered by Ballast Point!!

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  5 років тому +3

      The19mustang67 yeah this video is pretty old. My metaloid I have I think 50 or 65 lb braid and my top shot varies for what I’m targeting. Rockfishing I usually do 30. Any kind of lures I always go 40. And if I fly line, I’ll use 25 or 30 with and a 6ft leader of matching size flouro carbon.
      I pair it up with the California the most but will switch it around and put it on lighter rods too. if you end up getting the PCH I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. Both are great rods!

  • @ButeoLineatus

    Hello! What is the difference between your okuma sct and the phenix m1 inshore? I want to use it for throwing irons and general fishing too.

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  5 років тому

      ButeoLineatus my m1 inshore is only a 7’9” which I really wouldn’t recommend for throwing surface irons. If you are trying to fish irons I recommend 8’ minimum, I personally don’t like casting anything shorter then 8’6 which is where the sct comes into play. The sct also isn’t so long to the point where it’s unfishable with other techniques. It’s still fine to trip yo yo and cast live baits if needed.
      The m1 inshore does come in a 9’ size but I personally haven’t felt one myself. 9’ is around the size of strictly irons though. Not that it can’t be used for other techniques, but the longer rods make it more difficult for getting extra leverage on the fish

    Hey man great video! Been watching your videos for a little while now great stuff!!. I haven’t fished for any pelagic fish before and hope to do a trip this next year, my arsenal so far is an Abyss 808 paired with avet mxl, M1 79h with lexa 400, and phenix titan longfall 711mh 30-80 with lexa 300, it’s a newer rod but similar to a trevela super light but very strong. Are those enough to get in some yellowfin? Should I add another set up?

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  4 роки тому

      Goldblooded 707 that’s all 3 sets ups you would want for fishing yellowfin off shore and yellowtail as well.
      I was using my lexa 300 earlier in the yellowfin bite, and as the season progressed with bigger fish I switched over to my 400

      Goldblooded 707 that’s so badass! I’ve been wanting to make a trip up north to target sturgeon, striper, and salmon. I just feel like I’d have to make 3 trips and target 1 each time lol.
      Yeah SoCal is a very unique and very different style of fishing for sure. From Channel Islands to Baja are the only places you can catch yellowtail in the US. With yellowtail being pretty much our only year around game fish, it’s really influenced the SoCal style.

    • @goldblooded7076
      @goldblooded7076 4 роки тому +1

      Good chance at knocking out sturgeon and striper on the same fishing trip November is prime for them and both can be caught year round as well but I’d say fall striper bite gets hot and sturgeon picks up. For salmon they can be caught too trolling the Sacramento River and parts of the delta usually October-November it gets good. Also salmon charters from April to the end of October out of SF.

      Will Fishing I’ve personally never tried it. I’ve seen people do it too but I’ve also heard people saying the don’t like it because they pull the hook too often on the bite. I usually do about a rods length of 40# for irons. That way I have some kind of stretch when I get bit.

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  Рік тому

      Most people fishing surface irons will fish star drag reels because all you have to worry about is the tension knob to dial in the reel to your likings.
      Most lever drag reels don’t have a cast control dial, so at full free spool it’s more likely to back lash. But there are a handful of lever drags out there with cast control if you prefer the lever drags.
      My go to is the Daiwa Saltiga Star Drag, it has a really good breaking system built in behind the side plate for easier casting

    How do you feel about tatula 300 for tuna and yellowtails n snook n tarpon?

    • @Dirty.Hookers

      I personally haven’t used a tatula of any size yet. I wanted one when it first came out but my buddy was telling me the line doesn’t stack evenly because of the T Bar line guide

      Has of will it handle, it’ll probably be okay. Idk what the drag power is on them, but I’ve been using komodo and Lexa 300’s for small tuna and yellowtail for years

      Daniel Martinez that’s the perfect range for a nice setup. If you’re not in a rush, Fred hall show in Long Beach is a month away. The past 2 years they’ve been giving a free rod with the Lexa HD at the turners booth, and you’ll be able to get a free braid fill up on the reel. That right there would be a good set up to start with. And it’ll only be about $250 +tax.
      Other then that I’d say check out a turners outdoors store if there is one near you. A daiwa saltist star drag reel is I believe about $150-$175. And a California tri helix rod should be around the same price which should add up to the price range you’re willing to spend.
      But those California rods will have a crazy sale on them at the Fred hall show as well so I’d say try and see if they’ll give you the sale price. If not then maybe wait for the Fred hall show for some good deals. It’s an awesome experience. I’ve gone 4 years and i get more and more excited to go every year!

    For yellowtail do you think 40 lb fluorocarbon is to big? Also, do you think a ugly stik tiger rod would work?

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  6 років тому +1

      Noah van den Boom yeah we used to fish the tiger conventional rod on every trip. 40lb would be too heavy for yellows if you’re using live bait. For lures 40 is enough. But for live bait I do 30 lb and if the fish are really finicky I bring a spool of 20lb flouro and do about a 4-6 ft leader

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  6 років тому

    • @Dirty.Hookers

      I could try my best. It’s really not a difficult process. Just wrap the cord night against the blank, or over top of the cork tape if you want a little extra cushion on the handle.
      I’ve once done one rod personally, but it’s just a matter of taking your time and laying it on nice and tight with no gaps

    Good video. I like the wrapping on your rod, you should do a video on that. Surprised to see the low profile baitcasting reels ... are those sturdier enough for 50 lbs Yellowtail ? Why no Avet lever drag casting reels ... seem like the most versatile do it all reel. No Seigler Made in USA guaranteed for life ? Finally, glad to see you are not using spinning gear ... the top end spinning reels are way expensive, and I prefer a conventional rod and reel.

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  6 років тому

      rhino ranch I wanna make a video wrapping another custom rod. The bait casters can handle 50 lb yellows. But that’s about as big as I personally would fish for with them. I would prefer a conventional reel for anything over 30 just to be safe. I do like the avets but I only really like levee drags for fly lining a live bait and for 2 speeds. Other then that I’d rather have a star drag because they’re easier to cast. I actually do want 1 spinning set up mainly for poppers but you’re right they are very expensive and at that price I can get a conventional reel and rod for the same cost of a good spinning reel

    • @Clambelly
      @Clambelly 6 років тому

      thanks for the reply ... you owe it to yourself to take a look at SEiGLER star drag magnetic casting reel. Designed for long distance surf casting [ 200 + yards] and capable of casting heavy lead. Seigler also makes conventional star drag and lever drags reels. So many great products to choose from. Shimano TranX looks cool, but $500 can buy a lot of gear.

    • @Dirty.Hookers
      @Dirty.Hookers  6 років тому

      rhino ranch yeah I was between the tranx and the Trinidad and realized for $500 I’d rather have a conventional so I went with the Trinidad. Also there’s a lot more line capacity so that’s better. I’ll look into those reel. Thanks man!

      I take about 3 or 4 rods depending on what we’re targeting. I’ve seen people bring more, and I’ve seen others bring less. All just comes down to what style of fishing each person likes to do.
      If all you wanna fish is bait, then you’ll only need 1 rod.
      If someone wants to fish surface irons if the fish come up, or yoyos if they’re deep, and still have a fly line set up to fall back on, that’s 3 rods right there, but they might’ve only used 1 or 2 the whole trip depending on conditions.
      All comes down to the person and what’s available to fish for
