Love the history of the locations you visit! ooh, I love braunsweiger, their chili, and cheeseburgers, just about anything they have on their menu. My dad went to Kern's for lunch very often from '80's thru 90's and I met him there many a time! He passed in 2001, and every time I drive past there, would bring back fond memories. Great video, thanks!

When you stop in.....be sure to tell the cook to clean off the spatula (10:33). I was a short order cook for many years and I would never use a spatula with that amount of grime on it. One time, another worker complained that I "washed my hands too much" - - HELLO, we were cooking food for people.....how can you wash your hands too much ?? Any way - that spatula is disgusting !

I worked in J- town a number of years ago and would get lunch there a couple times a week. Great food and big portions for the money. They used to be in the old Long John Silvers building on Taylorsville Rd.

I was born and raised in Harrodsburg many yrs ago then moved away approx 1985. Used to love my mom's chili. Mom put spaghetti in her chili too . Ive never seen anyone else in 35 yrs of travel ever heard of another area that uses spaghetti in chili since. This vid brought it all back. I would travel home through the yrs and it was nearly impossible to ever eat mom's chili again after eating non-KY chili. Also never heard or seen a banana croquet outside of KY

OMG! Took me 17 years to finish my degree to teach. First job was teaching in a juvenile correction facility. Hame some Louisville stories in the 70’s that aren’t for sharing on utube. Irony is the capitol of life.
Never ate at Kern's, but was a regular at the Bambi in the early to mid 80s. If that burger is as good as a Bambi burger, mott fries and fried mushrooms..it's worth a trip back to Louisville. Keep on eatin.
That burger had quality meat, fresh toppings, and a good toasted bun. They keep it simple and smart. That's why they've been in business for all those decades.

Was at a Highlands X-mas party this past year and I brought uo the topic of burgers. It was all old white dudes over 60 and they all said Kerns burger was better than Bambi but they all still went to bambi for the onion rings!

When my dad was on chemo, he'd go through half a tube of braunschweiger with cheese and crackers in one sitting. It's about the only thing he liked after the chemo had changed his tastebuds. I like braunschweiger myself, but not so heavily. I'm still working up the courage to get a fried braunschweiger sandwich at Check's. I think that'll be what I get next time I go to Check's, but I need to try this at Kern's with that beer mustard. Love some good mustard. When I first had Kern's burger, I don't think I've ever had a juicier burger. The plate was drenched with drippings from the burger. The place isn't anything fancy. Just a good old fashioned neighborhood tavern. We're losing some of our neighborhood pubs, it seems. I definitely want to keep these places around, because they're important to maintaining the character of the different neighborhoods and communities of this city.
Years ago I would make liverwurst sandwiches on Pumpernickel bread with Limburger cheese Raw thinly sliced Vidalia onions tomatoes arugula sometimes bacon, Grey Poupon Mustard and Dukes Mayonnaise...
