Hopefully this helps give you the confidence to explore your local thrift store next time you find yourself in need of coffee gear, you never know what you'll find. I'm looking forward to finding this machine a new loving home now that it's back in (mostly) better shape!

Oh I still remember the time I first saw KitchenAid mixers and other stuff on the store shelf. Even 20 years ago they were the coolest and unlike any home appliance or almost any consumer device at all. I suspect they were designed before you joined KitchenAid though. That espresso machine looks dope as well. Actually a bit over designed to my taste, but still cool and functional. What year was it introduced? I thought it was some time in 2010s.

This is our second K-Classic. We had our first one for many years, so when we had to replace it, we wanted nothing else but this exact ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxBrV-RbF5Nk0Rlt9i15aao-YMzqzTG8Vf model. We use it for about three people everyday in the morning. The taste and quick brew is one of the reasons we like it so much. There are so many choices of brands of coffee that we would grab what was on sale and test the different brands from there. I would definitely recommend trying different brands of coffee to find the ones you like the most because there are brands that quite frankly taste horrible.

If you are concerned using strong (and poisonous) solvents on a piece of food preparation equipment, a bit of cooking oil and some elbow grease can remove tape residue. Then a little bit of dish soap to remove the oil residue. Takes a little more work than the strong solvents, but it is a totally non toxic method. After discovering this, this is how I take tape and sticker residue off all my food and drink implements, and save the goo-gone for other applications.

I love these machines!!. I have 4 of them that I've bought to repair, all bought for under £50 each. They use gaggia classic boilers and can be retrofitted with steamwands from the rancillio syliva V3 (modification is required). you can also fit the rancillio resettable 165°c thermostat to the steam boiler and get really crazy powerful steam!
It's fiddly to get the tops of them but once you do they are so easy to strip and maintain there's no downside!. Also being gaggia internals parts are easy to find!.

The old-skool espresso machines are basically just steam engines with different outputs. The technology has been used for centuries now, so it’s pretty well understood.
Back in the 90’s when I worked for Starbucks I got a refurbished Saeco machine, and it lasted more than a decade of daily use. Eventually I out it in the curb once the gaskets started leaking.
I saw that same machine in a tent at Occupy Vancouver in 2011: the paint had a distinctive chip on one corner. I love that it was still bringing people joy and espresso almost twenty years on. I hope it’s still out there doing that.

Important thing I learned: Cleaning ammonia turns coffee oil into water soluble soap, then evaporates leaving just soapy water behind. It's really nice, because saponified oils can't resettle the way they can with solvent or soap cleaners. It's like using oven cleaner (caustic soda) but without the danger of leaving poison on the surface.

I've done a few coffee machine restorations for friends who've got them from garage sales and the like. Firstly let me say I do enjoy your content and while I'm not entirely sure you meant this as a tutorial but rather a project idea I think there are a few steps you should mention. Firstly I've never come across a machine older than 2 years that did not require a group gasket replacement and these can be tricky to find for lesser known old machines. Secondly while a backflush clean was definitely needed in this case I would strongly encourage always doing 1 or 2 full descale cycles in addition to a backflush either after, before or on either side of to ensure the boilers are only working as hard as they need to and are not dropping large chunks of calcite off. Finally whenever starting a machine that may not have been run in a long time it's good practice to start with the valves open to allow water to flow into the boilers as they can easily burn out if an air bubble forms. I did enjoy this video though and as others have said would love to see some other restorations.

you can put a rancilio Silva steam wand on it, and the rest of the unit is actually just re-branded gaggia classic internals. so any/all aftermarket parts for a gaggia classic will work on it (mine also has an adjustable OPV).
I upgraded the shower screen and put in a stainless steel shower holder, tossed the rancilio steamer on it and put in a bottomless portafilter.
honestly works and runs great to the point where now i seem to make better espresso than most coffee shops, steam from this machine is fantastic for making latte art/cappuchino's
it falls short when steaming for multiple people because the boilers are small, but cant complain at all for home use at the price i paid.

I would love that machine. It's basically everything think I'm looking for. I have an older Gaggia Coffee Deluxe, and while I'm getting decent shots now, I would love to upgrade it to the classic, but I also love the idea of dual boiler. This is it. Inside it basically is a Gaggia classic, but dual boiler. The portafilter handle is what tipped me off to research it further as it's the same one mine has.

I’ve watched most of the videos on this channel and really like the content. But this video was a notch above all the rest! What a great video. An interesting old machine, you dropped a bunch of knowledge on my butt including Puro and eliminating the anxiety of restoring/repairing machines along with the shot of positive Morgan energy that keeps me coming back.

Just want to say, Thank you, thanks to your review on the little Bambino espresso machine by Breville, I now own one, great little machine, I am impressed by how well it does what you show it doing, and the steam wand, WOW, I never knew what a science there is to making what I thought was a simple coffee drink, but it is great fun to try and make my own, hand grinding beans, weighing them out proper tamping of the grounds, I love Amazon, thank you Morgan

I have an old La Pavoni that was given by a friend when he moves to another country. the machine is at least 30 year old and works like a charm, unfortunately, one time we got it repaired at a store and they switch the portafilter! the difference is really tiny, but it doesn't hold the same way, and it wasn't as well maintained as our previous one.
also, recently, the electricity in the machine just gave up and we are now waiting for it to get repaired properly. Even with all the tiny hicups I wouldn't trade that machine for anything.

Coming to this video late, but about nine months ago I scavenged a Breville "The Infuser" (essentially a Barista Express sans grinder) that a coworker had tossed because it stopped working. I figured there was a reasonably good chance I could fix it. It turned out there's a common problem with the solenoid valves getting clogged, and a $100 part plus 45 minutes of work got me a functioning espresso machine I never would have bought myself!
Your video did prompt me to pull out and clean the shower screen (which was stuck in there and kinda gross, but not as gross as you used machine) and run a cleaning cycle (which probably wasn't super necessary, but I did anyway), so thank you for that!

I started my coffee journey with a second hand delonghi small machine I spent 45 euros on. I got a second one for parts for free as I needed the steam wand. It was a great start and lasted me 4 years I think. It started constantly blowing fuses. So I got ANOTHER delonghi for 40 euros. It lasted me only a year as the pump died. That’s the inconvenient of second hand. You don’t really know how much use the machine got. Today is a big day, I ordered a Gaggia new classic. :)

Got a couple of questions for you Morgan! One of them is a little shameless ngl.
1: won't backflushing hurt whatever pump is bringing the water through the system? Why not just add the cleaner into the water reservoir?
2: kitchen aide espresso maker give away? I've been struggling with justifying spending big bucks in a machine and would also love having something from you.
    Much love. Thanks!

I'd probably suggest looking into using steel wool as well with some metal parts. I know it did wonders on my oven sheets getting all the rust/dark spots off, don't know if it can do the same for coffee machines.

nice, its just 2 gaggia classic boilers in one kitchenaid case. tons of parts for those. That one looks basically unused. Just make sure you purge air from the steam boiler and leave it for 5 minutes before you try and steam milk. it needs to purge the air out of there that gets let in by the vacuum breaker valve when it cools down, and replace it with steam again. You also dont actually want to steam at the same time as pulling a shot, but just after.

I think this Kitchenaid machine used a Gaggia aluminum boiler/copper group. Esentially, it's all standard Gaggia internals. The good news about this; it should use standard Gaggia gaskets, boiler/heating block, so replacement parts should be easy. I remember seeing this back in 2004 at Williams Sonmoma when first getting into coffee. I remember the retail price was nearly that of a Silvia. It made me wonder who would buy this over a Rancilio. At the time, I've owned a plastic fantastic Gaggia, which I believe is still working to this day! Awesome thrift store find!

I bought a new baby gaggia manufactured 2010, I bought it off someone that NEVER cleaned the machine. I had to replace the pump, the group head, boiler and the steam wand. I replaced all of the smaller parts as well. It was absolutely caked in hard water build up and was disgusting. It was a lot of work and money but considering I only bought the machine for 60$ I got a good deal and it functions perfectly now. Gaggias can last decades just take care of it. I plan to keep this one until it completely dies. I’m glad I could rescue one that wasn’t to old, it was abused.

Brave drinking the first shot from the machine after a deep clean with Purocaff! I usually pull a sink shot to really make sure there's no detergent residue (it even recommends you do this on the bottle of cleaning powder :P)
Also, Goo Gone is your best friend for getting sticky glue residue off any non-porous surface :)

    • @HerrHerbertHase
      @HerrHerbertHase 2 роки тому +1

Exactly right. Don't leave the steam boiler running though, as they are known to not deal well with prolonged stream pressure (the gaggia was never designed for that). What ends up happening is that the steam boiler gasket fails, a little bit of steam keeps escaping and over time causes the paint on the inside of the machine to peel off. Not a pretty look if that happens...

I purchased one of these new, red in color. Absolute piece of crap that corroded from the inside out.
    Got my money back!
Had a number of those chrome behemoths that have one setting of nine bar and use tons of water, heat up the kitchen, clog up easily and generally a pain in the butt to own.
Now own a Decent Espresso machine which is undoubtedly the finest machine on the plant. Made in Hong Kong!
