Cross Stitch Help, attaching fabric to a scroll frame
Вставка
- Опубліковано 9 бер 2015
- Mrs. Baker Girl asked how to attach fabric to a scroll frame. I tried typing an answer but had trouble putting it into words. So have done a very quick video showing my fabric on my scroll frame with an explanation. Hope that helps but please ask if not!
Note: A Sharpie is a permanent marker. Any permanent marker will do to mark the webbing.
Added Note: Nerdy Canadian noticed my zig zag stitching. This is only on the fabric, not on the frame or webbing and it's just to prevent the fabric from fraying.
Thanks for the video Nina. I had watched it and yesterday was in a thrift shop and found a scroll frame with the fabric strip - picked it up for $3 and now have my current project on it!
Thank you so much, I have a 25 or 30 year old Eric Wilson scroll frame still in the package with all the rods from 16 inches all the way uptown think 24 that I inherited from my grandmother. I am now retired and I want to Crosstitch or embroidery, I have my Fabric, floss, pattern, and I was at a loss of how to get this Fabric attached to this canvas on the scroll… I can’t thank you enough! I’m going to get started on my first piece today❤️
That's so wonderful to hear! Glad I could help.
Very helpful. This was the first time to use a scroll frame.
Nina - like Carolyn that is how I used to use my scroll bars but no more Millennium frame user but I am sure you will have helped a lot of stitchers.
Take care
Amanda

Millennium frames are the way to go.....maybe someday!
You make that look so very easy. I have a hate, hate relationship with scroll rods. I can never get it even or tight enough to my satisfaction. Maybe I'll try it again. Thanks for sharing.
Actually I'm with you on that, but I want to stitch with two hands on my frame and I haven't quite figured out how to attach the adapter for the q-snaps. So I'm back to a scroll frame. This is why I do hardanger....no frames at all !
Tha is so much this was just what I needed to see!
Thats exactly how I used to do it. Thankfully no more, now I have a Millennium frame. ;) x
The Mellennium frames look wonderful and so easy to use. Maybe someday!
Great video!
This is so helpful and informative!
Thank you very much. That helped :-)
So glad you found it helpful! Thanks for watching!
Hello, thank you for this video.
My questions are do I do not have webbing on my scroll split rod.
Do I use ezy tape on split scroll rod? Do I also need to sew extra material to my cross stitch border? My cross stitch project is stamped which leaves a 2 1/2 border. what type of material do I use? Aida?
Thank you very much.

Very helpful, thank you!!
V clear n useful. Inherited scroll frame as gift but lacks webbing to attach needlework to frame? What to do? Also have u vid of using frame attached to lap/floor stand?
Thank you very much for explaining a scroll frame. There are always going to be new people like me wondering how to mount fabric. What about the left and right sides of the fabric? How do you handle a big design like a HAED?
My sidebars are narrow (only about 6-8" high), so I have not had any issues with side tension. Also I have not worked on a HAED yet (but have purchased a couple!). I've seen where people have laced up the side, but that is a more permanent solution and has to be removed and re-stitched when you roll your frame to the next section. I have seen some clips many years ago, but never tried them. I think I saw them on the Nordic Needle website. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful but good luck with your search!
Awesome thank you !
Thank you!!
Thank you for sharing 😊
I’m new to this, when your project is done is it easy to remove the stitching? I’m doing a stamped cross stitch and I don’t have a ton of space around the edges.
Yes, it's easy to remove. Use contrasting thread and big stitches.
Did I see that you had stapled the webbing to the scroll rod, making it a semi-permanent feature on the scroll rod for future projects?
+Jennifer Henkel Hi Jennifer - When I purchased the scroll rod it already had webbing stapled to it. This is to baste your fabric. The disadvantage is that you can really only work on one project at a time as it's fiddley to baste fabric on. But it's very sturdy and great for long term projects. Hope that helps!
Yes, that did help. Thank you. I asked because all of the scroll rods I have purchased didn't have the webbing attached, and instead had a split going down most of the length of the rod. I have not seen rods where the webbing was attached.
thank you, I going to try that, because I do it all wrong
You're welcome!
Why do you have a grid marked onto your fabric and how is this accomplished? Please make a video for us that are new to cross stitching.
Hi - Here's a link to a video I did some time ago that explains this: ua-cam.com/video/ziy2eE5HNv0/v-deo.html
The explanation starts at about 10:49. Hope this helps.
I ended up buying too big of a scroll frame for my project. Can I use a larger piece of basting cloth and just keep it center it that way?
I think that would work. Give it a try!
So when your done with your cross stitch does that webbing stay on the bar? Do you just un stitch the basting you did for the fabric? Sorry new to this :)
Hi Shannon. No need to be sorry about being new, glad you asked the question. You are right, the webbing stays on the bar for your next project. Just cut the basting stitches and pull your finished stitching off.
Thank you :)
When you roll your material do you roll the top and the bottom exactly the same way
Yes, they both will roll inward. That way I'm handling the back of the fabric as I roll instead of the front, helps to keep the front of my fabric cleaner.
I have never did this when I cross stitched…but then again, I don't think I worked on one this big.
I have many cross stitch projects that I haven't finished :(
***** Watch out, you may catch the stitchy bug and start stitching again!Happy crafting!
Nina W I have a bigger one that is so pretty that I started many moons ago….like 15..gasp.Not as big as the one you are working on, but 16"x16" ( I think as its been so long ago, teehee)
Which way on the top scroll should the fabric be facing
It actually does not matter which way the fabric is facing. One thought is to attach the fabric so that as you stitch and roll the good side is on the inside of the roll and less likely to get dirty. That's how I've attached mine in this video. But as I said, you can attach it however works best for you. Hope this helps!
what size is the scroll bar you have in this video? and where did you get it from ?
+Mary Tweedy Hi Mary. I'm not at home at the moment (visiting family), but am guessing it's about 20". The scroll frame and the frame it's attached to is from Hearthside Craftworks in Canada. They make beautiful frames. Here's the link:

Hope this helps!
Have you tried the "no basting" rods that come w Velcro-like tape ?
Hi - so sorry to take so long in getting back to you. Yes, I have tried this and it does work well. There are so many choices now in how to hold your stitching! Thanks so much!
The company that makes the tape is now out of business and it's hard to find in stock. I'm going to have to modify my no-baste scroll frame with the webbing to sew it on from now on. That will be cheaper than buying velcro dots everytime I change a project.
I have not been too pleased with the tape. This is the first time using it and the tape is starting to release. Trying the sew in rods next
How do you get your tension im struggling with mine
When I roll the bars tightly I use both my hands along the bar to get it tight (see 1:52 in video, this is using one hand because my other is holding the camera). It's a matter of going back and forth between the top bar and the bottom bar. Make sure one is tight, does not move, then roll the other and tighten the screws so that it does not move. Then go back to the first one, loosen its screws, and retighten it using your hands along the bar. Tighten the screws on the first one and then go back to the second one. I will go back and forth a few times until I like the tension. Hope this helps!
:O do you put the scroll webbing OVER the cloth?! Holy moly I may have been doing it wrong this whole time...
There's no right or wrong way! If your method works, don't change it :)
Stitching with a Smile , I roll it underneath on the bottom it’s that ok? Only problem is I have everything marked, but cuz of so much fabric , I cannot make it even when it’s rolled up but it’s nice and tight , is that fine?
The shaking camera was too much for me to watch the video. Poor quality.
