Based on the screenshots you're putting on this video it seems like you'll be watching the best version of this movie at home. I saw it at the IMax theater and it seemed blown out and really soft. Not to mention I went by myself and being sandwiched between two dudes didn't help. People getting up, conversations, and cellphone screens, not to metion my couch is more comfortable than movie theater seats. It just wasn't as fun as I thought it would be.

Yeah I don't really understand why the IMAX scenes were not included in IMAX aspect ratio. Nolan's films all got IMAX aspect ratios on 4K discs, I don't get why Dune doesn't get the same treatment
Nolan probably made them put it on the disc. I don't think Denis is a big supporter of physical media like Nolan is. He probably only intended for that ratio to be seen in IMAX.

I feel like he would want his movie to be viewed in the most epic way possible, it'd be interesting to see if he has a negative or uncaring view about home media. I know he isn't really a fan of streaming after the whole HBO Max debacle, but I'm sure he is aware that the 4K disc format is the best possible option for home viewing.
@@CosmicPotato I don't a source. It's just some directors only really care about the "theatrical experience" and home viewing is mainly an afterthought Look at Tarantino for example. He shoots all his movies on film, but he doesn't give a crap about UHD, and he hasn't really said anything in support of it other than theatrical viewings. Nolan, however, is big outspoken advocate of physical media, which is probably why all his films have the IMAX scenes.
@@Zachary_Dale If I ever cross his path in Montreal will ask let him know :-) He mentioned in so many interviews in USA / Canada French and English in countries in Europe among things to see it on biggest screen and mentioned if you can n in IMAX. He thought so it can be on cinéma screen. So putting all that effort. Don't you want that viewer get the experience at home. Mind boggling. Again is Warner Brothers or IMAX like some poeple. Between studio and IMAX. Is Nolan and exception for some reasons...

Zack Snyder's Justice League was my favorite 4K movie of 2021. The only reason I don't want to get Dune in 4K is because I'm not too fond of the movie. Not because it was bad but because I couldn't get into it too much. But I do like how everyone is saying it's reference quality. When the price goes down a year later, I might pick it up.
@@jeanp.5929 That was my fav 2021 flick. The IMAX aspect ratio, amazing CGI and mindblowing soundtrack was astounding. I don't understand why WB chose to discontinue its continuity after its very positive reception. Dumb business decision if you ask me.
I'm definitely going to pick up this 4k. I saw the film in the theater in late October (not in IMAX, sadly), and was really impressed. My 18 y.o. son, visiting at the time, had already seen it in IMAX with his dad, but was enthusiastic to see it with me, less than a week later. Happy to hear they've done the film justice 🙂.
Director Denis Villeneuve is our ambassador here in Quebec ! He really shine as an artist and sadly Jean-Marc Vallée has passed away too soon. The hype was very strong and cinemas were packed for the events, and the end people were clapping hands ! What an experience in Imax and with the ornithopter in the storm wow that was intense !
I won't call this a sharp 4k experience because it truly isn't, when compared to other films shot and post-processed natively on 4k. I had my first view of Dune in a Cinity theatre and the softness bugged me. I thought it was due to the theatre maybe. But after watching it on UHD, there are several scenes that look almost like 2k. Then I checked why it's the case, and I found that they transferred the digital image onto film, and transferred the film again back to digital, to intentionally create that level of softness. This is a great-looking movie, and stylistically I love its soft look. But sharpness is not among its many qualities.
I thought my TV and blu ray player was not set correctly and I couldn't understand why everyone thought it was such a great looking movie...I've seen better looking DVDs...something's not right so I came to the reviews. I now understand it was meant to look this way...ok well at least I know it's not my setup. Thanks!

Your delivery is relaxing and informative. I’ll still check IMDb for review score as that’s not your bag baby.
What's interesting about this film is it was shot digital, then transferred onto film, and then scanned back to digital, so you do get the emulsion that you get with film but not a retro look. I think it might be the first film to do this?
@@NYC_Goody The DP and director thought film acquisition itself was too "nostalgic" and digital was too clean. Basically they just used the filmout to bridge the gap. Get back a little of the film softness while retaining the cleaner look that digital gives.
@@TackJorrance Digital intermediates didn't start until the 2000s. Movies that were edited digitally in the 90s were still being finished photochemically.
The video is amazing. The audio is OUTSTANDING. It is REFERENCE. 2049 & Dune are the best audio reference 4k discs to date. Dune 'streaming' doesn't come close to the 4k disc. Great transfer.
We need a breakthrough in 2023, home media should be 5K 4:3 full frame with crop position tracking system for certain aspects ratio... Home media should be evolve

In regards to the “IMAX” aspect ratio not being included on the home theater format; the entire movie was shot on the Arri Alexa LF at 4.5K resolution with anamorphic lenses that squeeze the image by 2x and require a “desqueeze” process in post production to correct the distortions of the image within the focal plane (images outside the focal plane typically retain most of this distortion), the resulting affect of this 2x desqueeze creates an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Any scenes you saw in an imax theater where the aspect ratio was taller was by way of cropping into the image and up-scaling the picture which then cuts off the left and right sides of the picture. In other words, those “imax” images aren’t bringing any improved fidelity to the movie the way that someone like Chris Nolan does when he shoots on actual 65mm Imax cameras. This isn’t a criticism of the filmmakers of Dune (I personally find the jump between anamorphic and spherical cinematography distracting), but the Alexa LF is not an imax camera and you can’t create a taller aspect ratio than 2:35:1 with anamorphic lenses unless you’re pushing into that image which does somewhat diminish your picture resolution in the process. Excellent review, nonetheless. Keep up the good work.
No matter the terminalogie of all the camera used and tricks. Fact is you miss the scale of the background. How it bring you in to the movie for up close scenes and general back ground scenes. Saw it in different movie theater. Nothing beats IMAX. Sounds and visual. Have you check some videos that came out few days ago. That compares both ratios pictures for pictures. Same happened with last James Bond. A petty. I had today order a steel book from France, bit found out also it want have IMAX ratio in it. Even thow it will have French Atmos. I cancelled the order. Once found out proper information. Thank for your point of view.
No? Have you seen the comparison images that WB put out as a part of the IMAX marketing? It's not just zooming in on the 2:39:1 image, it's actually more picture being shown. The 4K Blu ray and the HBO Max release cut parts of the image out, not the other way around.
After they ruined bond and destroyed the matrix , I was buzzing with how great dune was , the visuals , the cast , the sound were all top class , can’t wait for part 2
To be fair the original The Matrix wasn't that good in my opinion so I'm not surprised that this recent sequel sucks. Don't attack me it just my personal opinion. Can't wait to buy the Blu-Ray of Dune.
@@melissalayson7275 the action was Goldmine the first matrix with some groundbreaking scenes. In matrix 4 there is simply nothing that stays in your head.
@@MisterReen I said don't take my opinion personally. I didn't like the first Matrix movie so naturally I wouldn't like any of its sequels. That being said I have to admit that the first Matrix did inspire great action sequences that would be used in future movies and for that I am grateful.

I love it when movies switch to imax scenes too! I was watching Interstellar in 4K and I was surprised by the imax scenes because i wasn’t expecting it
Great video! I just don’t get the whole IMAX ratio thing. Why would anyone need to ask IMAX if they want to show certain scenes of their movie in a different ratio? They shot on ARRI Alexa LF and Alexa Mini LF (LF for large format). Almost every movie is shot on Alexa. Maybe IMAX is giving them Alexa cameras with an IMAX sticker on them for free under the condition to show some aspect ratios exclusively?!
I'm really disappointed that they didn't include the IMAX format on the disc. Watching Dune in IMAX is one of the best movie theater experience I ever went to, and I want that experience at home too especially since their now including the IMAX format for home. I think I'll wait until they include the IMAX scene to home media.
Bought this today at BB. A blind buy for me since I never checked it out. Watched a few scenes and I am blown away with the audio so far. Cannot wait to experience the movie this weekend.
Been collecting bluray for years and this was the first 4k movie I've ever purchased. Saw it in the theater with my 17 year old son and hopefully my 15 year old son will watch it with me? Loved the featurettes but wish they were longer. Enjoy your channel and thanks for the reviews!
A really interesting thing about how they processed this was they shot it in digital 4k then printed it onto film stock then did a 4K scan of the film stock so it has an emulsion look to the film
Having recently watched a bunch of films on Disney+ with the IMAX enhanced scenes it's sorely missed in films that don't feature it now. So much more screen real estate and beautiful sense of scale as well. Definitely a shame it's not on this release.
Just subbed. Still have a budget 1080p setup from hand me downs in the family but I already bought Dune in 4k + Blu Ray because seeing the movie convinced me to read the book and I became an instant fan.
Its still weird how the USA got the release last. It released on the EU on Christmas Eve. It’s still such a shame there are no IMAX scenes. So much was cut out
I was actually mildly disappointed with the video portion of this release. I found the Dolby Vision was a bit on the dark side. It was definitely brighter when I saw it in IMAX. Also, I can’t help but be disappointed with the lack of IMAX framed shots. I may have to go back and watch this again in HDR10 to see if it’s any brighter. This is a torture test for OLED banding as well. The Dolby Atmos track is amazing as expected though…maybe the best ever!
IMAX for the future box set should be something the video community demands. Getting the Snyder Cut was amazing, fans should inundate WB again. GL getting 100,000 in '22!!
Bought this on release and wasn’t quite as impressed as I thought I would be. I think it’s because seeing it in theaters twice was just so much better! Top 3 theater experiences i’ve had along with Interstellar and Tenet. Still one of the best 4k discs I own!
Seeing in IMAX was one of the best movie theatre experiences I’ve ever had. What does it for me with the disc though is the atmos. Fortunately I’ve got a pretty good atmos set up and the audio track on this is tremendous. Better than at the theatre for me personally. If this disc had Imax scenes then it would go down as the best all time discs for me personally.
I understand your IMAX position, but as someone with a 2.35:1 home theater, I'm very happy they didn't go IMAX. So, I'm definitely picking this one up!
I agree. first saw it on hbo max in 1080p in stereo TV speakers and liked the look of it more than the 1984 film which was a cut down version of the first book. the book I read and loved. Can't wait for part 2.
I personally hate the most lately the thing you say you love: the change of aspect ratio. Watching on a 2:35 projection screen (I know you used to be a projector guy too, Jeff, but see you don't care about us lot anymore :) ... so I cannot accommodate the change on the fly. Hope this is a fade only. Just pick one aspect ratio and keep it!

The switching aspect ratios is horribly distracting to me. Plus, it's useless for those of us with a 2.40:1 projection screen. Still, the IMAX image appearing above and below this type of screen can easily be removed with a "blanking" feature found on most projectors.
exactly, I also wrote a comment after you wrote yours saying the same - I don't have a blanking option, however. Jeff used to be a projector guy, but since he has changed back to TV watching, he couldn't care less about us :)
I think it looks fantastic and sounds even better. Too many dimly lit scenes for me to be fully blown away by the visual presentation, except for those fire and daylight scenes. Those were stunning
I know what you mean about the bonus imax sequences, you notice the imax, you barely notice the widescreen switch because usual from what I can tell the scenes are typically slower paced. And on my 55 inch tv I can barely see the bars anyway.
I really want the 4K steelbook, but it's sold out right now. Might have to buy it in the slipcover version and hope I can still get the steelbook down the line.
Already have this. It’s amazing. If you have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos this is a no-brainer. I saw the movie in theatres in the Dolby Experience, IMAX, and then on HBO Max stream on an LG OLED with Dolby Atmos. This 4K Blu-ray is the best viewing experience you will get unless they ever release an edition that includes the full IMAX frames.
Not complaining, movie looks good, but it didn’t wow my eyes. I watched it on my new 65 inch Sony 90K and ps5. Granted I couldn’t use Dolby vision, had to use HDR 10 instead.
Mine is out for delivery as I write! Saw this in IMAX with laser and it was magical looking! Sadly, the sound was horrendous: how they can sell that way-too-loud mess as enhanced sound is beyond me.. Not until I streamed it on HBO MAX did I realise the drum-sections in the great soundtrack had interesting reverb on them and weren't badly distorting because of overloaded amps and speakers driven to within an inch of their lives.. I hope one day they'll realise that "loud" does not equate to "good" It was the same with Tenet; an aural assault with bad sound so loud that all details went out the window; I'm really looking forward to playing this on my own system in the highest resolution possible!
True. One of two reasons I never go to the cinema anymore (the other being people). Although I realise I miss out on a certain experience, I prefer the controlled conditions and perfection that is home cinema.
I've been a HUUUUUUGE fan of the Dune series for years. In fact, it was because of the original David Lynch, 1984 version of Dune that I started reading the book. I couldn't make sense of the film and my dad literally handed me the book to read. But I did get the Arrow Video release of the original 1984 Dune (it's a really good edition. 4k UHD Blu-ray). I did purchase this edition on January 11th at Target. I do have to agree with your review of the 4k release. And they are making a 2nd, slated for October 2023. This current one is definitely far superior to the prior 2 (1984 Lynch. And the Scyfy channel miniseries). Really appreciate your reviews 👍 Btw, your review of the Sony ubp-x700 4k UHD Blu-ray player, convinced me to FINALLY purchase a 4k blu-ray player. The Sony ubp-x700m (an updated version of the ubp-x700). LOVE IT!!!
I got the steelbook. Apparently, a lot of people are posting on the internet how they opened up their steelbook and found that there were NO DISCS inside! So now on top of Best Buy's crappy unprotective packing that causes many steelbooks to get damaged in transit, now we also have to worry about actually getting the dang discs lol... My steelbook did have the discs, and it thankfully wasn't dented this time, but it did have a noticeable scratch on the back. Still relatively minor damage compared to some other dented and smashed ones I got so I'm just gonna keep it, but it's still disappointing.
I honestly thought the movie was boring, beginning to end. All that money spent on production and so dark you struggle to see whats going on. Just my opinion.
The only thing I miss is the imax version! I would really like to see that Imax version of this film at home... Otherwise... yeah! Looks good, sounds good and film is good, so homerun in that way!

They’re essentially twins. I like Dune slightly better and that’s probably more because I like the movie itself more. But both audio tracks are stylistically the same. Very cinematic!
Speaking in strictly visual terms, I don't like the muted desaturated colours, and doing something as simple as cranking up the colour saturation made for an improved viewing experience. I know it's just a minor nitpick, but I feel like with more vibrant colours, the movie comes alive.
I see what you’re saying here but its Arakis…..it’s not meant to be vibrant. Stylistically I feel like the presentation was nailed on the head. I get it though, as 4K enthusiasts we get so spoiled by these awesome crispy vibrant discs.
I felt the same way which is why I'm watching the reviews...I thought it looked bland and wondered what I'm missing because everyone thought it looked great. Now I understand it was meant to look this way. I thought maybe this guy doesn't know how to film a movie but he did Blade Runner so I he does know what he's doing. I'm in a learning process trying to understand what makes a movie look good...was kind of expecting more in this movie.
It was the director and DP who did not want the IMAX ratio on home video. I agree with them that the effect is lost on home video and is a distraction.
I watched the HBOMax release and now the BluRay release on my HT system. I'm sure the 4k release does add a bit of highlights, but this movie has a dark setting until Paul is in the desert and even then it is soften a little where it gets its film look. As one that saw the original release in the 80's and also have the BluRay version, I have to force myself to not do direct comparisons of the storyline. My system is 7.2 viewing on a 55" Oled Tv and the sound track is what draws you in more than the difference between 4k or BluRay, to me that is the way it should be, let the sound track be what draws you in over the small details of HDR @4k over HDR @Bluray.

Unfortunately a good quality 4K tv with good quality sound is needed to get the benefits of 4K Dune 2021. People have said Dune 2021 was amazing in the cinema especially the sound and music. Dune 2021 4K blu ray fails on the cheap 4K tvs.....very medicore.
Shame about the IMAX scenes, or lack there of. Same goes for No Time to Die. I remember watching the Mission Impossible: Fallout 4K and seeing the ratio slowly expand as Ethan runs and jumps onto the helicopter is hugely exciting!!
I saw Dune on IMAX and normal screen at the Cinema IMAX was EPIC. My favourite film of 2021. IMAX made alot of different. I'm really gutted that they have not included the changing aspect ratio. It was amazing when they did it on Interstellar 4k. Will still pick it up though. 🤗 thanks for the review.

I remember reading or seeing that this was shot 4.5K digitally then transferred to film before finally being rescanned it to digital.
Do you plan on reviewing the 4K version of the Green Knight?
The Green Knight is probably one of the best 4K discs in 2021.

btw, the French steelbook release has the 4k and the 3D versions (and 2D blu-ray as well), and it looks sweet too ;)

Saw this in theaters on IMAX and then a second time in DOLBY theater. Wow it really does make a diffrence and truly pulls you into the film.

10/10 A/V presentation. The 4k to beat in 2022!
In regards to the “IMAX” aspect ratio not being included on the home theater format; the entire movie was shot on the Arri Alexa LF at 4.5K resolution with anamorphic lenses that squeeze the image by 2x and require a “desqueeze” process in post production to correct the distortions of the image within the focal plane (images outside the focal plane typically retain most of this distortion), the resulting affect of this 2x desqueeze creates an aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Any scenes you saw in an imax theater where the aspect ratio was taller was by way of cropping into the image and up-scaling the picture which then cuts off the left and right sides of the picture.
In other words, those “imax” images aren’t bringing any improved fidelity to the movie the way that someone like Chris Nolan does when he shoots on actual 65mm Imax cameras.
This isn’t a criticism of the filmmakers of Dune (I personally find the jump between anamorphic and spherical cinematography distracting), but the Alexa LF is not an imax camera and you can’t create a taller aspect ratio than 2:35:1 with anamorphic lenses unless you’re pushing into that image which does somewhat diminish your picture resolution in the process.

No matter the terminalogie of all the camera used and tricks. Fact is you miss the scale of the background. How it bring you in to the movie for up close scenes and general back ground scenes.
Saw it in different movie theater. Nothing beats IMAX. Sounds and visual. Have you check some videos that came out few days ago. That compares both ratios pictures for pictures.
Same happened with last James Bond. A petty.
I had today order a steel book from France, bit found out also it want have IMAX ratio in it. Even thow it will have French Atmos. I cancelled the order. Once found out proper information.

No? Have you seen the comparison images that WB put out as a part of the IMAX marketing? It's not just zooming in on the 2:39:1 image, it's actually more picture being shown. The 4K Blu ray and the HBO Max release cut parts of the image out, not the other way around.

To be fair the original The Matrix wasn't that good in my opinion so I'm not surprised that this recent sequel sucks. Don't attack me it just my personal opinion. Can't wait to buy the Blu-Ray of Dune.
@@melissalayson7275 the action was Goldmine the first matrix with some groundbreaking scenes. In matrix 4 there is simply nothing that stays in your head.
@@MisterReen I said don't take my opinion personally. I didn't like the first Matrix movie so naturally I wouldn't like any of its sequels. That being said I have to admit that the first Matrix did inspire great action sequences that would be used in future movies and for that I am grateful.

Great video! I just don’t get the whole IMAX ratio thing. Why would anyone need to ask IMAX if they want to show certain scenes of their movie in a different ratio? They shot on ARRI Alexa LF and Alexa Mini LF (LF for large format). Almost every movie is shot on Alexa. Maybe IMAX is giving them Alexa cameras with an IMAX sticker on them for free under the condition to show some aspect ratios exclusively?!
I'm really disappointed that they didn't include the IMAX format on the disc. Watching Dune in IMAX is one of the best movie theater experience I ever went to, and I want that experience at home too especially since their now including the IMAX format for home. I think I'll wait until they include the IMAX scene to home media.
Bought this today at BB. A blind buy for me since I never checked it out. Watched a few scenes and I am blown away with the audio so far. Cannot wait to experience the movie this weekend.
Been collecting bluray for years and this was the first 4k movie I've ever purchased. Saw it in the theater with my 17 year old son and hopefully my 15 year old son will watch it with me? Loved the featurettes but wish they were longer. Enjoy your channel and thanks for the reviews!

IMAX does nothing for me and I've been to those theaters...WAY TO LOUD TO ENJOY THE MOVIE.
A really interesting thing about how they processed this was they shot it in digital 4k then printed it onto film stock then did a 4K scan of the film stock so it has an emulsion look to the film
I mean it seems like it was worth it! The video/audio clarity puts Disney to shame

Having recently watched a bunch of films on Disney+ with the IMAX enhanced scenes it's sorely missed in films that don't feature it now. So much more screen real estate and beautiful sense of scale as well. Definitely a shame it's not on this release.

I can never rank this as the best 4K UHD since WB decided to NOT include the IMAX so I can't rank it in the Top 5 at all.
Just subbed. Still have a budget 1080p setup from hand me downs in the family but I already bought Dune in 4k + Blu Ray because seeing the movie convinced me to read the book and I became an instant fan.
Its still weird how the USA got the release last. It released on the EU on Christmas Eve. It’s still such a shame there are no IMAX scenes. So much was cut out

I was actually mildly disappointed with the video portion of this release. I found the Dolby Vision was a bit on the dark side. It was definitely brighter when I saw it in IMAX. Also, I can’t help but be disappointed with the lack of IMAX framed shots. I may have to go back and watch this again in HDR10 to see if it’s any brighter. This is a torture test for OLED banding as well.
The Dolby Atmos track is amazing as expected though…maybe the best ever!

Bought this on release and wasn’t quite as impressed as I thought I would be. I think it’s because seeing it in theaters twice was just so much better! Top 3 theater experiences i’ve had along with Interstellar and Tenet. Still one of the best 4k discs I own!
Seeing in IMAX was one of the best movie theatre experiences I’ve ever had. What does it for me with the disc though is the atmos. Fortunately I’ve got a pretty good atmos set up and the audio track on this is tremendous. Better than at the theatre for me personally. If this disc had Imax scenes then it would go down as the best all time discs for me personally.
Really wish I could have seen interstellar in theaters. Might have to rent one out just for it

I understand your IMAX position, but as someone with a 2.35:1 home theater, I'm very happy they didn't go IMAX. So, I'm definitely picking this one up!
I agree. first saw it on hbo max in 1080p in stereo TV speakers and liked the look of it more than the 1984 film which was a cut down version of the first book. the book I read and loved. Can't wait for part 2.
I personally hate the most lately the thing you say you love: the change of aspect ratio. Watching on a 2:35 projection screen (I know you used to be a projector guy too, Jeff, but see you don't care about us lot anymore :) ... so I cannot accommodate the change on the fly. Hope this is a fade only. Just pick one aspect ratio and keep it!

The switching aspect ratios is horribly distracting to me. Plus, it's useless for those of us with a 2.40:1 projection screen. Still, the IMAX image appearing above and below this type of screen can easily be removed with a "blanking" feature found on most projectors.
exactly, I also wrote a comment after you wrote yours saying the same - I don't have a blanking option, however. Jeff used to be a projector guy, but since he has changed back to TV watching, he couldn't care less about us :)
Had the pleasure of seeing this in true IMAX and it was glorious. Can't wait to pick this up in 4K.

I think it looks fantastic and sounds even better. Too many dimly lit scenes for me to be fully blown away by the visual presentation, except for those fire and daylight scenes. Those were stunning

In France they have a 4K 3D Blu-ray combo, if you can play region B.
I know what you mean about the bonus imax sequences, you notice the imax, you barely notice the widescreen switch because usual from what I can tell the scenes are typically slower paced. And on my 55 inch tv I can barely see the bars anyway.

I’ve seen screenshots and done comparisons to that. also talked to others who saw both. Not perfect 1:1, but it’s far and away better.
I really want the 4K steelbook, but it's sold out right now. Might have to buy it in the slipcover version and hope I can still get the steelbook down the line.
Already have this. It’s amazing. If you have Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos this is a no-brainer. I saw the movie in theatres in the Dolby Experience, IMAX, and then on HBO Max stream on an LG OLED with Dolby Atmos. This 4K Blu-ray is the best viewing experience you will get unless they ever release an edition that includes the full IMAX frames.
I really enjoyed this movie, so I'll definitely be picking this up. Great review as always man.
Not complaining, movie looks good, but it didn’t wow my eyes. I watched it on my new 65 inch Sony 90K and ps5. Granted I couldn’t use Dolby vision, had to use HDR 10 instead.
Mine is out for delivery as I write! Saw this in IMAX with laser and it was magical looking! Sadly, the sound was horrendous: how they can sell that way-too-loud mess as enhanced sound is beyond me.. Not until I streamed it on HBO MAX did I realise the drum-sections in the great soundtrack had interesting reverb on them and weren't badly distorting because of overloaded amps and speakers driven to within an inch of their lives.. I hope one day they'll realise that "loud" does not equate to "good" It was the same with Tenet; an aural assault with bad sound so loud that all details went out the window; I'm really looking forward to playing this on my own system in the highest resolution possible!
True. One of two reasons I never go to the cinema anymore (the other being people). Although I realise I miss out on a certain experience, I prefer the controlled conditions and perfection that is home cinema.

I've been a HUUUUUUGE fan of the Dune series for years. In fact, it was because of the original David Lynch, 1984 version of Dune that I started reading the book. I couldn't make sense of the film and my dad literally handed me the book to read.
But I did get the Arrow Video release of the original 1984 Dune (it's a really good edition. 4k UHD Blu-ray). I did purchase this edition on January 11th at Target. I do have to agree with your review of the 4k release. And they are making a 2nd, slated for October 2023. This current one is definitely far superior to the prior 2 (1984 Lynch. And the Scyfy channel miniseries).

Reference quality indeed 😎 I just got the steelbook in, and checked out the video for myself. I did see it in IMAX, but this 4K disc is awesome.
I got the steelbook. Apparently, a lot of people are posting on the internet how they opened up their steelbook and found that there were NO DISCS inside! So now on top of Best Buy's crappy unprotective packing that causes many steelbooks to get damaged in transit, now we also have to worry about actually getting the dang discs lol... My steelbook did have the discs, and it thankfully wasn't dented this time, but it did have a noticeable scratch on the back. Still relatively minor damage compared to some other dented and smashed ones I got so I'm just gonna keep it, but it's still disappointing.
I miss director’s commentary, but I’m glad they include the “making of” content.

I honestly thought the movie was boring, beginning to end. All that money spent on production and so dark you struggle to see whats going on. Just my opinion.
The only thing I miss is the imax version! I would really like to see that Imax version of this film at home...
Otherwise... yeah! Looks good, sounds good and film is good, so homerun in that way!

Though the film was shot digitally, they actually created 35 mm prints from the digital intermediate to add a real grain structure

They’re essentially twins. I like Dune slightly better and that’s probably more because I like the movie itself more. But both audio tracks are stylistically the same. Very cinematic!

Speaking in strictly visual terms, I don't like the muted desaturated colours, and doing something as simple as cranking up the colour saturation made for an improved viewing experience. I know it's just a minor nitpick, but I feel like with more vibrant colours, the movie comes alive.
I see what you’re saying here but its Arakis…..it’s not meant to be vibrant. Stylistically I feel like the presentation was nailed on the head. I get it though, as 4K enthusiasts we get so spoiled by these awesome crispy vibrant discs.
I felt the same way which is why I'm watching the reviews...I thought it looked bland and wondered what I'm missing because everyone thought it looked great. Now I understand it was meant to look this way. I thought maybe this guy doesn't know how to film a movie but he did Blade Runner so I he does know what he's doing. I'm in a learning process trying to understand what makes a movie look good...was kind of expecting more in this movie.

It was the director and DP who did not want the IMAX ratio on home video. I agree with them that the effect is lost on home video and is a distraction.
Just watched it today and I had the volume on low and it was still dynamic and loud , the picture quality is reference also.
I watched the HBOMax release and now the BluRay release on my HT system. I'm sure the 4k release does add a bit of highlights, but this movie has a dark setting until Paul is in the desert and even then it is soften a little where it gets its film look. As one that saw the original release in the 80's and also have the BluRay version, I have to force myself to not do direct comparisons of the storyline. My system is 7.2 viewing on a 55" Oled Tv and the sound track is what draws you in more than the difference between 4k or BluRay, to me that is the way it should be, let the sound track be what draws you in over the small details of HDR @4k over HDR @Bluray.

Unfortunately a good quality 4K tv with good quality sound is needed to get the benefits of 4K Dune 2021. People have said Dune 2021 was amazing in the cinema especially the sound and music. Dune 2021 4K blu ray fails on the cheap 4K tvs.....very medicore.
Shame about the IMAX scenes, or lack there of. Same goes for No Time to Die.
I remember watching the Mission Impossible: Fallout 4K and seeing the ratio slowly expand as Ethan runs and jumps onto the helicopter is hugely exciting!!

BvS and the Snyder cut got an Imax release. Maybe the second press will be with the shifting ratios, or maybe it will be a WAC exclusive like BvS was.
When it releases, make sure to do a review of ‘last night in soho’.

I saw Dune on IMAX and normal screen at the Cinema IMAX was EPIC. My favourite film of 2021. IMAX made alot of different. I'm really gutted that they have not included the changing aspect ratio. It was amazing when they did it on Interstellar 4k. Will still pick it up though. 🤗 thanks for the review.

Hey just found your channel and was watching an old video and seen you had the hulk(2003 version)steel case blu ray version, I just wanted to know where you got it from. Been trying to find it for a while now.
They even released it in an even bigger IMAX ratio in a few select theaters. I think it was like 1.43:1 or something like that.
What about the apple streaming ? Is this version miles ahead of the 4k uhd you getting on Apple ?
