Calendula flowers (Calendula officinalis) are an easy to grow herbal treatment for skin complaints ranging from eczema to minor cuts and sores. It’s safe and effective and there are many studies showing how calendula extract helps speed up the healing of minor skin injuries. There is also some research into its use in anti-aging. All the more reason to use calendula flowers as a natural medicine and skincare herb.
In this video, I share how I grow calendula flowers, how I harvest them, and how I use the petals to make calendula oil. Oil infused with calendula can be used as a skincare ingredient, as a safe herbal remedy, and even mixed into salad dressings and consumed. That’s how safe calendula is - you can eat it. It adds a natural golden color to baked goods, salads, and other dishes.

I’m a new Herbology student and came across your video while studying calendula. I’ve just read in my course material that as calendula has an emmenagogue action (stimulates menstruation) it should be avoided while pregnant.
Thank you for your beautiful video though, I’m looking forward to growing in my new garden 💜🌿🌼
Like the addition of your cat in the box. You are very organised. Thanks for the information.
I pronounce the alternative you gave, thanks for that! It took a while of watching gardeners say it the "normal" way before I realized what the word was! thanks
I love calendula and use it to make salves. Your comment about the expiration date of oils is something I always questioned but you comment about basing the expiration date on the oil your using was BRILLIANT! I never heard that before. Thank you❤️
I heard it before but I also read that this applies only once you removed the herb. As long as you leave the herb in the oil, the oil will not go rancid.
I had a bad burn from the oven on my lower arm and I swear to God this plant healed me within minutes. I need to grow more of this.
How did you use it? Infusion or directly on skin? Oil or tea?
Thank you for this. Now I know what to do as I have lots of Calendula flowers growing where I live.
That’s so informative! You’re amazing! Thank you so much!
loved the drying rack!! :)
Thank you for your kindness and no there is no question, you have been so good in explanations.
So happy I found this! I grow calendula and use it in my teas, my beauty, hair products, and soap! Love your channel! 🤗
Be beautiful.
lewie is a beatiful russian blue! i had one growing up and he was such a loyal strong cat. this is my favorite flower for sure and I am learning so much. thanks for the video!
You're close :) Louis is a Korat but they look very similar, especially in colour. You're welcome for the video Cathy
Look like bits of sun gold. Quite an amazing flower.
Awesome update thank you for sharing my friend sowing some this year
Love your sweater!!!
Very very helpful!!!! Thank you so much!
Fantastic information, thank you for sharing Tanya.
Lovely. Never planted any but will be on the lookout at garden center for some.

We have alot of Calendula at our community garden.
They never stop flowering!
That's one of the best things about them :) Some winters I'll find even find one or two flowering in December
Thank you so much. Really hepful
That was awesome! Thank you!!
Very nice, beautiful garden too🌸🌸🌸🌸
Thank you for all the info.. thank you again
I loved this video. Thank-you for sharing.
Love the video and information, Since your waiting on rain you should get a rain gutter and collect rain water on use for your garden. Add some banana peel in the water barrels as water plus natural fertilizer.
Gratidão Tanya!!!
Thanks for this insightful video. I infuse a lot of herbs, leaves and flowers for body preparation also to eat a drink.
To the question about the drying rack you used. I have googled the options and there are a few depending on where you are located. There are also known as herb, flower or pasta drying racks, there are different options and if you don’t want to buy one making one with pvc pipe or wooden dowel with elbow connectors from a hardware centre, garden centre or online stockist are easy. you can also use hanging herb racks or a Sheila maid and drape some cotton on top to hold the petals. A slatted wooden orange box or a slatted wood bathroom rack will also work.
Great video....... Even in a zone 5 cold climate winter, Calendula will self seed in mid to late Spring in the area you've been growing it.
Thank you I will be doing this soon.
I love this video.
These video was made 3yrs ago.. but by looking and looking for how to dry my Calendula plants I ended up here in your channel. Thank you so much for sharing your masterpiece. I can appreciated the art of loving the nature. Keep it up! I will be watching the rest of your vids.
Greetings from Netherlands ❤️
You're very welcome!
Beautiful Video
Thank you.
Hello, thank you for this informative video. I love your drying rack, would you mind sharing where you've purchased it?
Love them so much.
Thanks. I have heard of Korat but you don’t see them a lot. Thanks for the advice on the bath oil. Eveline
I use to be a soapmaker , and often used calendula, great for your skin.
Mystical Light z
That is a great Information and am happy to know the benefits of this flower. I have these growing for the first time this year and was just looking for information just like how to harvest etc. these are very easy to grow flowers without putting much effort and money. Thank you for your video it is helpful
You’re very welcome 🙂
Ive got 100s this year..so.excited
i think i might have to add these to my garden. great video :)
Easy to grow, look pretty, and have multiple uses. Calendula should be in every garden :)
Can't help watching this video over and over again
I love calendula ( maravilla). Thanks Tanya. Please plese and plese make a vide abaut how you organize your time for all the things you do. Again thank.
that was a neat video did not know you could do that with Calendula flowers
It's just the tip of the iceberg -- you can use calendula flowers in so many beauty and food recipes
Awesome 🇺🇸
Love this 🧡 I'm definitely trying this in my garden this year x
Inspirational video, thanks Tanya. I must be more organised about growing calendula - I just wish I had more space for flowers!
Thanks Caro :) They can grow on pretty poor soil - if there’s any extra bit of space at your allotment you could perhaps ask about a communal calendula patch?
Sadly, I'm no longer involved in the local allotments as the lady I helped gave up her plot earlier this year. I'll try and find space in the veg patch, although the soil there is pretty good after years of improvement!
Hi. from USA!
So Happy I Found Your Channel This Is Great Advice. It Is My First Time Growing Calendula! I'm Wondering Where You Got The Drying Rack Or Did You Make It.
Very informative n thank you.. since its my 1st time harvesting n my purpose is for tea... can I rinse it before drying coz my area its dusty but will they get spoilt, if I rinse it?
I used to pick Calendula during summer vacation with a bunch if other ladies... We all has smooth hands after the harvest. The resin form the flowers were so healing. My question is you had two types of Calendula you made the infused oil with...the darker gravy ones you said would create a golden yellow infused oil...if you only used the lighter colored calendula would
the oil be clear? I received a 4 oz bottle of Calendula infused oil and was disappointed it was clear. When I looked up the product on Amazon the marketing photos showed a golden yellow oil in the dropper but my oil was clear and seemed to lack any faint calendula smell. So I wondered if they used a lighter colored variety of Calendula flowers than what I have used in the oast. I know there is a specific variety that has mire healing resin...I believe resin us in the Latin name.
very interesting .i love the orange ones too. i wanna ask you can we use calendula in food as we use it in beauty products?.isnt harmful to human? thanks.
I just found your channel! I was looking for info on growing and harvesting calendula. I have been making my own salve with dried flowers I bought online, but decided to try to grow my own this year. I started making the salve for my poison oak rashes (I'm highly allergic and get it second hand transfer). It works amazing for poison oak, poison ivy, and poison sumac. It keeps it from itching and heals it before it gets to the oozing stage. It works great as a diaper rash ointment and nursing salve. It also works better than neosporin and is great for bug bites, exzma, and other skin rash conditions.
You'll probably be interested in my guide on growing, harvesting, and using calendula in skincare recipes then. Find it over here: lovelygreens.com/calendula-a-guide-to-growing-using-it-in-skin-care/

@@threecatsinacoat Same lmfao-
Hello guys
Thought the comment section would be filled with ff1970 but I was wrong lol
I've made a paw wax using the oil and a few others. I tell people it's like chapstick for dog paws.
This is my first year for growing Calendula flowers and I love them. I can see how they might spread, so dead heading is a must until it's time to save seeds. Thank you for sharing this video, very interesting and your kitty is so cute, I have two cats and boxes are a fascination to them, lol!! :-)
That box has been in the table for several months now. I left it there after some items were delivered and found one of the cats in it not long after. It's like THE PERFECT SIZE for cats. They adore it, lol
We had a plot holder one year sow a small area of calendula flowers and then kind of give up on gardening. The next year the seeds from those few plants colonized a big area! It was wonderful
I am growing Calendula in my garden this year , it can spread to it’s hart’s content 🌼🌼🌼
Love the video and info. Can you tell me where I can get the canvas drying rack you use for the petals in this video?
It used to be available on Amazon but no longer. You could probably DIY one pretty easily though 🙂
can you dry the petals in a dehydrator or are they too small?
is the resin on the flower heads with it's benefits also a substance you will have in the oil/balms?
Please what brand is your food dehydrator? looks compact to me and the right size too
Did you make or buy your drying rack ! Would love a link or tutorial!!
can you use the other colors for infusions do they all have the same healing properties ?
Wow, this is very helpful. Maybe I could press some of these flowers and send them in a brown parcel to someone I love don't y'all think?
That was very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you found it interesting :) Do you have calendula in your garden yet?
No, I don't. I think I will try it next spring. I am very interested in checking out your products. The Calendula soap was so pretty.
There's a recipe for how to make it on my website --> lovelygreens.com/calendula-soap/
Thanks!
HI! I love that drying rack! Is that something that you made yourself or is it available to purchase online somewhere?
That one is purchased -- I'm sure it would be easy to DIY though!
Same! I tried googling it but cannot find. Can you tell us where you purchased it? Thanks!
I love this very informative video! I am also going to try growing Calendula flowers. Could you please share where you got that sweet drying hammock thingy? Thanks!
You can get similar types online :)
where did you get your drying rack?
💚😊💚
How much calendula should be used per how much oil?
Where did you get the drying rack?
Hello :)
We are 'Get it beauty' which is the Korean beauty TV program.
We like this cool video. So, can we use this video just few seconds for our program?
Of course, we are gonna write source on this video!
I am waiting for your reply. Thank you and have a nice day :)
I'd rather not, thanks.

🌻👍
Do I need to thin them out
The dried Calendula petals,do you think it has an expiration date ?
I wonder if in your ebook you have recipes for hair treatment, like soap or shampoo , masks ? Thank you.
They’re all skin care recipes rather than hair care.
Nice video. Do you rinse the flowers before drying?
No I don’t rinse but I do set them on a cloth outside to allow insects to escape
Love your sweater. Did you knit it?
I have almost zero skill with knitting needles, so unfortunately no :)
Hello! I was trying to find information about how to prune back old calendula, so as to further promote it's growth?
You can prune it down by a third of its green growth during the growing season if it’s looking leggy.
Heya. Been thinking for a while to get and grow some Calendula myself. Mainly for internal use. I've read that it is very useful for muscle spasms if ingested. I figured it would be something nice to make in a drink format for my mom or anyone really. Either mixed into an orange juice or on its own even. Any recommendations for such a thing? Would you say use the petals or the whole head?
Also been thinking of other flowers and plants I could grow and use that are consumable. Thanks!
If you're eating calendula, it's just the flower petals. However, the amount that you could eat probably won't have any medicinal effect. For that, you need to concentrate the active constituents in oil or as a tincture.
@@Lovelygreens how do I got about making a full fledged tincture?
I live in New Orleans, can i grow caléndulas here?
Thank you. I can’t wait to make a calendula salve. I have a question though. My calendula plants have powdery mildew. Can I spray them with diluted neem oil, water and soap? Will the neem affect the properties of the flowers? Thanks!
Neem oil has no effect on powdery mildew. It's an insecticide (kills insects) and I don't use it outside of the greenhouse for that reason. If the oil gets on bees or butterflies it can kill them too. As for your plants, harvest and use the flowers as long as you can then pull the plants. Powdery mildew is common in calendula and there's not much you can do once the plants are covered in it.
Hiya, i have always used shop bought calendula for cuts and bruises but i was not aware that you can eat it. Could you make a bath oil from it? I like your cat. Is it a Russian Blue? I have a blue and a white version.
You most certainly could make a bath oil from it. The infused sweet almond oil I make in the video could be poured directly in the bath.
Louis is a Korat but I love Russian Blues too -- yours must be a real sweetie :)
Ive been searching all day for recipes for marigold/mango kombucha. There just isn't anything out there. I think I'm going to just throw the flowers in the kombucha after I brew it. Would you recommend the whole flower or just the petals?
Probably just the petals since the rest of the flower may taste too bitter. Nibble it first and see of you like it?
Do you have video and recipes how to make Calendula soap? or
Face cream?
Sure I do - there are loads of ideas on the website: lovelygreens.com/tag/calendula/
Do you make anything with sunflowers?
I've only started growing the dwarf varieties these past two years and leave them for the birds mainly. The petals can be used in beauty recipes so it's an idea though :)
I have a question...I made an infused oil with calendula and chamomile flowers with grapeseed, olive, coconut, and MCT oils. I applied the left over batch on my legs and had an allergic reaction with red spots in the area...I am curious if you have ever heard of this happening? I have used all ingredients before in different uses and applications(as teas and tinctures), so I was a bit surprised to see this happen. Thoughts? Thanks for the video!!
Have you found any answers to your reaction a couple years ago? "She is of the Woods" and "Rain Country" youtube channels also talk about infused oils and precautions when combining ingredients. We have learned a lot from them as well.
My first time growing calendula for medicinal benefits and harvesting. Learning putting the flower tops in a Ziploc isn't a good idea bc it molds. What's an easy way to dry out the flowers?
I show how I dry calendula in this video.
The spot where your calendula grow, what time the sunlight arrives and goes please? I'm struggling to choose the right location
It has sun all day in that position. My climate is mild though -- lower summer temperatures plus full sun equals bumper calendula harvests
@@Lovelygreens thanks, I've bought calendula seeds pack, exciting to see them grow. Calexis orange and pacific beauty
I just started growing and harvesting calendula to insist the oil. I have noticed some works on them at times and when I'm drying them any that I miss picking out, leave their poop behind. If some of that ends up in the jar is it ok?
I think there were some autocorrect errors in your comment. Could you please clarify?
@@Lovelygreens I'm so sorry, it was supposed to say worms, not works.
I understand that the expiration date of the oil you use is the date to stick to. But what about the product I make? How do I calculate how long it will last in a soap or salve?
Using an ingredient in soap or other skincare does not prolong its shelf life. So to answer your question, the closest original shelf life of any of the ingredients you use to make a product is the new product's shelf life. For example, you make soap and almost all of the oils used have a one year shelf life. One oil only has a shelf life that's six months, though. That means your finished soap has a six month shelf life.
@@Lovelygreens that makes perfect sense. Thank you so much for your help.
Why cannot we add fresh picked leaves n flowers from garden and make its hair or body oil maybe rather then infusion can we cook the fresh flowers n leaves in oil to remove its water content
Hi There Thank You for the vid. i watched a vid. later week the same flower with different name The Calendula i,m growing is not like this plant at all its the English Marigold is this this the plant you are showing ? Calendula original name i,m really not sure which is which so lots more vids. to learn more about these plants Thank You Again
Calendula officinalis is the botanical name for the pot marigold.
Can I dry them under sunlight? If not, why?
Sunlight contains UV light that will bleach and degrade herbal material. Avoid it when drying any herbs or flowers.
Can we have some of the seeds
Can you use mineral oil? It lasts forever. Never gets rancid.
No, you can't and I personally would not touch the stuff. it's not oil, as in the lipids extacted from vegetables. Mineral oil is a chemical created by refining crude oil - petroleum.
Where did i order calendula seeds
Most good online garden centers will stock at least one variety 🌼
Is African Marigold, calendula?
No, it’s unrelated
Okay, Thank you so much for the reply !
P.P.s...and you don't need any bee-wax to make this salve, just flower leaves and fat.
The beeswax firms the fats up. Without it, or another wax, you couldn't make salve.
