Is my phone listening to me? We tested it, here's what happened

- Just about everyone who uses popular social media apps like Facebook and Instagram can tell you an anecdote about advertisements popping into their feeds that are so acutely targeted to them it’s like the apps are listening to their conversations.
Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has called it a ‘conspiracy theory’ that the app accesses the microphone on a person’s phone to listen to conversations and, in turn, target news feeds with related ads.
But it happens so often to people that it gives even the least conspiracy-minded pause, people like WWL-TV Photojournalist Adam Copus.
It gets really freaky when you've said nothing but your phone starts sending ads based on what you were thinking.
YES!!! I thought it was just me! 😳
Isn't it legitimately terrifying?
@@Veritas-invenitur Actually, with all the information Google, Facebook, Apple and Amazon have on you, it's not that tricky to predict what you'll be thinking BEFORE you've even thought it. Consider that human beings aren't so different, and they've info on how MILLIONS most like you--gender, age, politics, consumer preferences, income , psychological profile, neighborhood, etc.--will respond to a particular post, news item, or video meme. With that info in hand, they can, if they choose, even steer your choices more and more into a sort of silo unchallenged agreement, including a prepetual state of alarm. Polarizing and radicalizing people is good for their business model. Keeps 'em coming back for more.
@@AE-bh5zs I am well aware. You know, in all reality, one could make the argument that Big Tech has been psychologically abusing people and committing outright acts of cyber terrorism. I would hate to know just how many murders and suicides that Big Tech is responsible for. Not to mention the political manipulation and election interference. In a fair and just world, Big Tech would be held accountable.
OMG IT CAN LISTEN TO OUR THOUGHTS 😰

@@Ankitkumar-jf6bz did you pay for facebook, instagram...etc?
The social delama
We need a massive class action lawsuit on Google for this VERY OBVIOUS violation of our privacy. Literally everyone who uses a phone knows they listen to your conversations and force advise.
And Facebook they are even worse.
I'm in. Unless they hire me then I am REALLY in ;)
the only thing obvious here is how gullible everyone is so the reporters convinced themselves they have the brain to analyse anything. It is wholesomely ridiculous.
It goes beyond listening to you to sell you products. Nosey and intrusive folk will use ones camera and microphone to just listen, jist because. None of this is news, neither some kind of secret. The whole point of one needing to get over comes with the belief that said person believes themselves to be slicker/smarter than whomevers privacy their invading.
Nothing is gonna happen because they control the gov
UA-cam/Google definitely listens on a far deeper level than you realize. It tracks movement. Ambient sounds. Knows when you set your phone down and/or are busy working and throws ads knowing you won't be able to skip them. I've replicated this 100s of times. They hear absolutely everything and will learn the machines your running if you do. Once it recognizes that particular sound it will go to ads. Knowing from past learning that sound means you won't be able to skip ads. It's crazy but true. I've proven it
also drones
Had suspicions about this, searched for a video on it. Didn't quite find what I was looking for due to algorithms in sure, but this comment nailed it
This is so true. When I wash my dishes I usually put my phone to my eye level and play youtube videos. This is the time that I am bombarded with ads that I can't skip and it is really annoying.
Its just code... You have the camera and microphone, cannot remove batteries... It's just so obvious it actually makes my stomach turn when you all collectively choose to believe a fantasy.
You chose to believe the sensors of your phone rather than your own senses. You are putting the telephone above you, morally, socially...
Just ask old folks how they managed without "smartphones" and learn from them, before they all die and Klaus Schwab makes us eat the bugs.
We are learning from our phones and each other instead of learning from parents.
Parents : "don't talk to strangers"
Also parents: here's an object that allows you to talk to every stranger on the planet.
I realized it happens to me very often that they start ads when I start being distracted from the video I'm watching
They do, let’s stop pretending it’s just a conspiracy
it is a conspiracy, just not a theory
A conspiracy doesn't mean it's an "invention". Conspiracies are real and will always be. But media likes to make you think conspiracies are inventions.

How about when you haven’t said a word, haven’t looked up a thing, and your very thoughts come up on your feeds. That’s the level really freaking me out.

When something shows up 20-30 minutes later and you tested by talking about something really foreign to you, you know it's listening. These CEO's are either lying or their developers are doing it and not saying anything to allow them plausible deniability.
Dont be naive. Its on governmental level . The orders come from the government, its necessary to track and control people
Yes they lie. Yes they are listening. Even OnStar is always listening. The government uses it itself

UA-cam definitely listens! I was talking to my husband and said "I wish I had some mac and cheese". A couple seconds later I refresh my UA-cam page and at the very top there's a KFC ad for mac and cheese.
A couple days later I'm talking with him on the phone about whether or not we should have more kids. The next day I'm getting video recommendations such as "Why I Stopped Having Kids" or "Is it Worth Having Kids?"
I have never searched for anything to do with that at all.
You can't convince me they aren't listening.
It’s things like that just make me want to delete all social media and move to remote Alaska and live in a cabin
Snowden told you. He wasn’t lying.
I used to call him a traitor, but after that reporter was investigated and even Trump's campaign, I started to change my opinion a little.
Perhaps...still not a Fan...
Big government needs to be beaten down with an even bigger stick.
That's why they locked up Snowden and threw away the key, he knew too damn much, and we were all following him. He was the leader of Hooman race.
Sheldon Cooper is right!! It's a smartphone conspiration ...
They ABSOLUTELY are listening. I never searched for Greek food online, but when my friend and I talked about it we got ads for it five minutes later. Coincidence? Yeah right!
Wow
Correct
WOW!
Now that I think about it.... that's been happening to me.... 😳
about a year ago, my daughter and I were no where near our phones, but near the modem. We were joking about cat trampolines, thought it was something we just made up. Pretty obscure huh. Yeah, that afternoon I got an ad on my facebook for, yep, cat trampolines.
This happened 15 minutes ago. My wife needed to run an errand and we spoke briefly about her picking food up from a restaurant. I see the ad on UA-cam 3 minutes later. It's somewhere I eat once a year at most. I've had suspicions about this in the past and spoke loudly about something random like flea medication for the dogs - same results.
Who mixed the audio on this video? The fact it is playing from one side only is bad enough, but for it to change which side it is playing on over and over is just insane.
Thry probably put the video together on a computer monitor speaker 😂
Just because they say they're not...doesn't mean they're not.
And here is the elephant in the room that this entire world needs to wake the hell up to. Kudos.
Exactly James.... same for Siri and Alexia
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people aren't out to get you.
The answer to this crap is to dump the creeps at Google and Apple. Linux and Purism Phone all the way!
Technology isn't a Pandoras box. If the system is performing actions it would be very simple to see these actions within the logs or source code.
That's why we know the apps that track cookies, location, etc. If they were listening to our audio it would be extremely obvious within the phone.
When people say, "I don't believe....." they often mean, "I don't WANT to believe", because it's too unpleasant to accept.
Aye, the extent of accuracy possible from "Big Data" collections via Cookies, (digital) fingerprints and (shadow) profiles is kinda creepy - and apps don't need to "listen in" via microphones or the cameras, when they can track our Online Behavior on Social Media and all kinds of websites we're using.
And any "free" service is paid for with exactly that data - recently, more and more News Websites even block users, who use ad-blockers for exactly that reason: they don't get paid, if they cannot show you "personalized ads" - which are, of course, based on all those trackers, cookies and fingerprints in the back of our Browsers and Apps.
When people say that, they just show the level of their own ignorance about the intrusion of their privacy, that takes place with the accumulated information from little "drops" of data (click by click). But each little "drop" of information adds to a more complete (psycholical, social, political, etc.) profile of us - even here on UA-cam (Google as its owner is no exception). So, the only free stuff is OpenSource Software, but it wouldn't generate money on its own. So, personal information of our surfing behavior is part of the income of most "big players" out there these days.
Yet, I'm not sure, that is all "harmless ad-targeting", since it could be used for a lot more than this, too. - And in more autocratic Political Systems and Societies, it actually is these days (see China's Social Scoring System, for example).
P.S./Edit: That's why the Chaos Computer Club also recommends to create at least one "Online Persona" for all non-governmental Online-Interactions, so we don't use our *actual* Personal Data and preferences online. - It's a pretty practical Life-Hack and relatively easy. Just don't get mixed-up with yourselves, if you're having more than one ^_^.

@@dandylion2837 Believing as in "Religion" or in "Trusting (the corporations)"? - Not sure the first would have anything to do with the topic, but maybe you mean it in a completely different context even.

@@BulukEtznab yeah I mean as in religion. Or just not believing facts in general. People chose to naivly trust the Government of their country. As if it would all operate with the common good of the people in mind, when really it has the wealth of the country in mind.
Yes these type of people can't cope with truth
Honestly I think they're also somehow able to start sending us thoughts (like mind control). I got a couple picture type things in my mind about watching a movie. I went on UA-cam and the first video that popped up had the words "movie" and "watch" in it. I hardly ever watch movies and wasn't really thinking about it, I just kind of had the weird idea out of nowhere, not like my usual thinking process. Anyone else experienced this?
Yup, they can read your thoughts, can see through your eyes and Remote control people. It's a rough revelation, for sure.
I woke up in the morning about a year ago, sat bolt upright and said 'wierdo dreams'. As I turned to step off of my side of the bed my dog was lying right alongside of the bed, and I noticed he was sound asleep. I step over him without waking him, then I go into the living room and open my phone. There was immediately an advertisement for something which I did not catch. In the still photo was a sleeping dog with a thought bubble above his head that said 'wierdo'. As I have been well aware of this phenomenon for some time I went to take a screenshot - and the ad disappeared from the screen that fast, never to be seen again. I have watched for it, as I wanted to screenshoot it. I wondered if it even is a real ad, or was it a combined construct of my still dreaming mind and the phone (which was next to the bed that night). I believe they are monitoring and manipulating dreams also.
A microwave oven blocks all signals coming in and going out. Use an unplugged microwave oven to avoid accidental catastrophic failures 😲. I carry an old microwave in my vehicle and you can use one to store your cell phones and other electronics at home or anywhere. A bit bulky perhaps but 100% effective. Works like a Faraday cage.
I had an older model android phone that was going goofy after spending a couple of days in the microwave. I saw that it kept trying to connect to something over and over again after i had removed it. That incident was several years ago, and I am getting on in years now. Good luck kiddies... you will need the power of God to stop this.
Crazy isn't it
That’s harder to prove. Much easier to lightly “suggest” certain things to make you believe it was your idea.
I mean…. I want to say you’re right, but think about it.
That sentence you’re talking about is on my page too and i see it just about everyday. Did you want to see a movie and then went to UA-cam? Or did you see the sentence on UA-cam enough times until you “spontaneously” wanted to watch a movie and UA-cam had that saaaame old sentence there but at the right time? Keep track of things like this.
They’re definitely listening but your thoughts should still be relatively safe. However, keep in mind that “suggestability” is a powerful and subtle tool that advertising specializes in.
good thing humans only have one ear, on the left side. this was a great auditory experience

It needs just a bit of investigation to find out. For a bit more insight, you also need a router and Wireshark, and listen to the traffic between phone and Google. Facebook is buying data from Google. Also iOS does spy, but less invasive than Android.

They manipulate, edit, etc to swing it any way they want. Real, ethical journalism is dead, folks! They are all arrogant a holes who spew THEIR opinions all day!! THAT is not journalism!
Remember the Samsung TV was eavesdropping on your in house conversations? Of course they are listening, but they couldn't handle all the lawsuits for privacy violations.
Yes they are. I was talking about something earlier with my sister and as soon as I went on my phone the SAME thing popped up on Instagram. It’s so weird. It’s not the first time either it’s always doing it.
At first I was skeptical. But today of all time, I was going out with my family. My father and I was talking about how he's been eyeing a certain car to buy. And just a moment I ago, in my UA-cam feeds, there's that exact car review content that we just talking about. I was in no way an automotive guy and never ever search for that car on google. Now I was certain some apps are taking advantage of the microphone all the time.

They don't listen for real. But what they do is read your cookies. All your social media apps read your browser cookies and get tracking data through your cookies the same way websites do. And that data can be aggregated. If you want it to stop just clear your cookies daily. It's going to affect your browsing experience however.

Yup. The software is listening. And who doesn’t know people in power lie by now? The things that have popped up, within minutes of a conversation, are too specific to be happenstance.
Most of the companies they are talking about can be proven trivially that they aren't. Because you can check if the phone is sending the information off to a server. Others you can't really know, when data is being sent off. In some cases, you just have to trust them.
Yea

Exactly.
1. You cannot actually turn off your phone. It's only a software-generated "off button". How can a device (like your phone) be off and then indicate you that it has been turned off?
2. Your phone is a device for automatic internet connection. Even if you turn off your modem, it will pick other signals without you knowing you're actually connected.
You phone, ipad, car computer are PERMANENT CONNECTION-SPYING DEVICES.

UA-cam is definitely listening through my phone. I watch more UA-cam than anything else, so I really know the kinds of videos it recommends to me. Shuffle being random didn’t feel random, create’s code that’s no longer random and users found it to be less predictable than actual random code.
The shuffle application is a great example. Because they made it random people thought it was calculated and predictable, in order to solve the problem instead of installing a random code generator they implemented a standard predictable code and user found it to be more random than the previous version.

This happened to me. I was telling my son that our washing machine was broken and I was going to buy one a new one. Within minutes an add for washers and dryers popped up on my phone.
Wow
Now tell us about all the conversations you've had with your son that did _not_ result in an ad showing up on your phone. I'll bet there have been thousands. But you only remember the one time it happened, not the thousands of times it didn't. There is a reason we have the word "coincidence" in the English language. It's because coincidences _do_ happen.

They can continue to mislead you by not technically 'lie'. I have a theory they are working somewhat like a old photo negative. They may not listen to what you are saying, but they can see the inverse. They can see when silence is taken up by 'sound'. This can produce a negative image of the audio, and still allow them to state that they are not listening to what you say, but they can see/hear the gap in a void.
... that still needs your microphone, you know?
@@skyplayx3558 Yes, but on a technicality, it still allows them to claim they are not listening to what you say. They are listening to the gaps of the audio.
Some wise man said "Even walls have ears", truest words ever spoken.
Unfortunately the walls ears often relay wrong information. And the ears are your jealous neighbours in most cases who want to benefit from someone else's circumstances which is such a shame cos compassion and kindness goes out the window. I say good luck cos it does nothing for their souls but corrupt it more.

Saem! I came home one day and my roommate spent 30 mins talking about getting a Total Gym. I had ads about Total Gym on Facebook for about a month. I never once looked up Total Gyms because it was my roommate's idea, not mine. They listen 100%.
But if she has searched for a vacuum the same day or the day after, if connected to same wifi, you will see ads of what she searched
We were in our chevy truck talking about music. We began talking zbout Patrice Rushen, a recording artist I hadn't heard anything from since the 80. A few minutes into our conversation one of her songs (Forget Me Nots, 1982) came on Over The Truck Radio!
I’m sure they’re correct that it’s really good at “reading your mind” with the algorithm. But they are totally listening as well. There are some things I never look up and rarely talk about that I end up getting ads for. One time I was telling my mom that the brakes on my car weren’t so good and I might need to get them worked on. I was new to driving and didn’t have really any car maintenance related search history and still got targeted ads for brakes and brake services. This is just one example of many. But it all is confirmed by the fact that Siri knows when you say her name. That implies that the phone is always listening
Snowden said clearly that they are listening to us .
You don’t need him to tell you, simply a modicum of common sense. You’ve never heard the announcement when you phone up a utility Coy and it says recording for security and training purposes? Well you agree to the same when you download that app.
1st Clue...Anything with the word "Smart" in front of it, like Smart Phone, Smart House, etc... including your security systems. Canadas CBC did an essay on a popular home security/monitoring system, and people's exterior AND interior surveillance videos were being shown online and used by others. So not only listening but watching as well.
I know I was talking with my sister about 3 major craft stores to buy materials for a project she wanted to do, and I had my iPad with me. Within days I was getting ads for all 3 of those stores.
@plunii I don’t use Siri, but decided to wake her. Nope, voice activation didn’t work, and I’m not going to settings to turn her on. They’re still listening.

My friend was telling me about and obscure brand of liquor I’ve never heard of before and later that night I started getting ads for the exact same product. Another time I was at the grocery store and my mom asked me to pick her up a box of her favorite cookies, and I started getting ads for the same brand.
My co-worker and I were chatting at my cubicle while my phone was sitting on my desk. She mentioned how she loved the 1981 movie "Mommie Dearest" with Joan Crawford. A clip from that movie came into my feed later that evening.
We were talking over lunch about steaming raisins. The next day something popped up on my phone about how to steam raisins. That's when I realised that my phone was listening. It's such a random subject, I don't think it's a coincidence.

They put AI on it, listening to us
Thats how I interperted it too lol "No WE dont listen to the convos are programs do"
My friend was talking to me about two subjects during lunch: a wedding he was going to, and how much his wife loves and artist that I don't like at all. That evening youtube recommended music to play at a wedding and guess what artist it was. Also, no, UA-cam doesn't have access to my microphone on my device. But it did on his.
But that was probably just the algorithm getting it right. Such a coincidence... 🙄
My Samsung F62 has a explicit feature to turn off microphone access, it can be added to the system tray.
Earlier they had a button to turn of all sensors, and see which ones are ON, I can't find that 'all sensors' feature though.
They absolutely DO LISTEN. Me and my buddy proved it. We spoke of something neither has ever searched anywhere and both of us got adds later on.
They listen to all conversations ...
Yep We did the same using clean, freshly wiped phones while on a VPN. New email, Facebook and Instagram accounts. No prior history. The apps very clearly were listening and delivering advertising based upon our conversations near the test phones.
They probably use other apps' Voice-Based-Keyword data to target and still be able to deny the possibility of their app listening.
For example, pubg officially used to collect voice data..... (And the login is often times Facebook authenticated) who do you think would be buying/collecting data from them?
Same thing has happened to me multiple times. I had a new laptop that was upstairs and my mom was talking about CBD oil downstairs and the door was closed and it picked that up even tho it was quiet and I got an ad for that. On my phone I get ads for stuff people just talk about and I never search too and also stuff I type while messaging people and never search.
Like me and my wife were discussing whether to blue or brown a musket barrel i was working on. A short time later she started getting ads for Birchwood casey products. Something unrelated to anything she ever searches for.
"People" aren't listening to you, but the app absolutely is. Of course Facebook and Instagram would never admit to it, it would crush their business.
My guess is there is some weird avenue where the app itself isn't (for legal purposes) doing the listening, but it's utilizing a service that employs another service that accesses another point that IS listening. So legally FB can say THEY aren't listening, but its not the right question...
Debra Barclay - Exactly. That's my guess, too.
No because they dont need to. Many ppl have done much more serious experiences and it's always negative.
They are actually listening and recording all of your conversations on them. Your phone speaker is on recording at all time's.
Read the new terms of service people 😬
Yes it does hear you, and stores it in a storage field.
Now it's getting even creepier. Sometimes I think about something very specific (a movie scene, a song, a dish...) and in a short time the exact movie scene, the song and the recipe would appear in my feed. They are abusing us. I don't know how are they reading our minds, but they are. I took special attention to it to see if it was just coincidence, but no, it is not.
