My ex demanded half my 401k in our divorce, which was about half of what I owed to Great Lakes. My answer was for her to pound sand, but our mediator (God love her) said "Fine, but you have to take half his student debt". My ex said "Nope" lol. In the end, I paid off my student loans in 461 days (today is the anniversary, actually) with a lot of sacrifice, hustling and discipline. She's still in debt.

We live in a society now where our women think they're entitled to a man's assets but none of his liabilities because men owe them something for some reason.

Debt collectors don't care what divorce settlements say. Neither does the IRS. If you co-signed for it, the will hold you 100% responsible, regardless of what the divorce settlement says. Never co-sign for anyone.
Thanks to Dave’s advice when this guy got married they put everything in each others name now the guys up the creek.

No, but if you are forced to pay you can sue your ex civilly and recoup those costs(if the divorce settlement says she was supposed to pay)

This young man is in a mess of his creation. Messing with girlfriend without protection is like mountain climbing without a rope. Ramsey is correct on his advice. If I could offer one added piece of advice it would be to give up eating out in any restaurant. Including fast food. Stop at the grocery store and buy some apples and pears instead. Maybe bottled water.

Most of the time breakups/divorces don't split evenly. It's not fair, but do what you can to stand back up on your own feet and lay down some strong "never again" boundaries for money and relationships. Growth and freedom will come naturally with hard work. You got this.

I never said $1200 wasn't reasonable, but, I was shocked by the total amount. For those who have to pay, they know what it's like. It's not cheap to raide a child, in this day in age.

The $5000 lump sum needs to be split with the ex wife. He shouldn’t have to pay the whole thing. She won’t have the money to pay it… so what is he supposed to do?
ACR if I heard right, it sounded like the $5000 was his part of the student loan the court wanted him to pay, and she is paying the other $5000...so if that's the case then it was split during the divorce proceedings.

@@Raza__12 He should have never co-signed, but that's water under the bridge now. There was a time I didn't know people shouldn't do that either, but thankfully I never found myself in a position to co-sign for anyone, or I might have done that when I didn't know better.

He's in a place that he needs to be able to move on. He needs to get a lump sum together and be done with it. Going back and forth with the ex to save a few bucks probably won't be with it.
How does a guy get stuck with a exes student debt. Paying for her irresponsibility. Years down the road it only benefits her, not him.

If this guy doesn't act fast to pay off these debts, he's going to lose his security clearance and there are very few MOSs in the national guard which do not require a security clearance. Don't EVER co-sign for so much as a hamburger.

@@onebridge7231its around 98%. They do take some fees. The court and judges steal 25 cents for every dollar of child support collected from social security to "offset collection costs" which is how they get paid.

Because there is a formula of how much money it takes to raise a child, then multiply it out. He made a bad decision to co-sign on any loan. Nobody should so-sign a loan for anyone!

@Dexter Morgan what Dave also isn’t taking into account is that once he goes out and gets another job making 20k extra, that child support will double from 1200 per month up to 2400 per month. This sucker is done for.

If you signed for something the lender does NOT care about divorce decree stating who is to pay nor are they legally obligated to abide by it so that's a moot point Dave.
The lender will go after the cosigner like a rabid dog if the primary defaults.

1/2 the men I know are divorced and broke , the other 30% advise me not to married, only like 20% that are married seem truly happy. Marriage is not worth the risk.
Today is my 18th wedding anniversary. We're still very happy, but then we do not have children and both work full time and are on the same page about our finances and we're completely debt free including mortgages.
there are women who are on the same page as you financially that want marriage. It can be risky but worthwhile if you find one that cares about important principles.
