I have never cooked nopales. After retirement, we moved to México. This morning the young lady that helps keep my house clean, brought me some fresh nopales from her garden. She has removed the spines. She doesn’t speak English and I’m a beginner Spanish speaker. We have fun trying to communicate. We watched your video. So today, I’m going to make your recipe using the nopales. Thank you for sharing.
From Austin Tx. I like you cooking, your teaching makes every dish easy to make. We started learning to help cook at 8 years old, I will be 78 years in June. I was born here, but raised in Calif. Since 15 years old. 4 girls in our family of 8 including our mom and dad. My parents were both very good cooks. Mexican style, made flour tortillas every day. Chili salsa at every meal. Only 3 people in our family eat chili. I so enjoy watching you cook, mostly all your dishes we learned to cook at home.
Hi Rachel, I couldn’t believe it when you said you were cooking CACTUS! I’m from England and I’m 80 years old and this is the first time I’ve ever heard of a recipe with cactus! I love to try new things but I’m not sure if I can get jars of cactus here, but I would love just to try it at least. Does it taste similar to any other food? Thank you for sharing your recipes with us, I love your kind and friendly way you help us to follow your instructions, and your Ron is a very lucky man. Love from Sandra. X
Thank you so much for your sweet comment Sandra, we love Nopalitos (cactus) it is tender and it is slightly tart in a delicious way and it is traditionally cooked with Mexican chorizo, scrambled eggs, onions and tomatoes, beef, chicken or pork or just simple beans, and enjoyed with corn tortillas. Hugs.❤
Goya products are sold worldwide and they should Carry nopales in jars. They will not be as fresh but will do. You could also buy a small nopal plant and grow it yourself. I could eat that everyday.
@@doreenkidd2172 as you saw with Rachel's recipe. You need to boil nopales at least 20 minute's, I add onions (these help with viscous ) whole garlic, salt and dried oregano to taste. After they are tender you throw water and use the cooked nopales like a vegetable. E.g. in scramble eggs, or varied sauces. Some use as salad by adding chopped tomatoes diced green onions and serve cold for summer. This is considered a super food.
Thank you, Rachel! ❤️ (P.S. I was born in Texas, many years ago…and have been living in South Florida for 35 years. Muchisimas Gracias for sharing your wonderful recipes from my beloved home state, Tejas!) 😊
Oh my, that looks splendid! 🌵💖💝❤️ I used to grow my fruit growing nopales indoors here in Brooklyn (NY) and they were becoming full and large spiny pads. It never occurred to me to cook the pads. I wanted their sweet fruits. 🥰😂😂😂. Now I want to start up a new garden again ... With these lovely nopales. Thank you ❤️🥰💝 for sharing this fine receta. I hope to make this sometime soon.
Hi! When you say fruits, do you mean the fruit on top? I've always been curious as to how they taste and could never come across a cactus plant with the fruit on top but I hear that fruit has a lot of nutrients in itself. 😊
@@tracydee8775 Yes, the fruit comes in colors of light orangy yellow, some in light strawberry color, some in a pale pinkish white color. I think Nopales are special cacti that have many subspecies.
Most of your recipes transport me back to childhood and my mom's cooking - y'all cook almost identically. She grew up in Refugio. My dad grew up in Goliad. And I grew up in Victoria.

Rachel, I made this dish yesterday, 04/27/23, for lunch.
