Just did this upgrade tonight on a 2022 Specialized Stumpjumper Expert with the Roval DT Swiss 370 hubs. Previous Roval 370's used a pawl freehub but now come with the 18 tooth star ratchet. Having come from 4-degree engagement I9's on my previous bike, the 20-degree engagement with the 18 tooth star ratchet was a no-go.
As mentioned, it couldn't be any easier of an upgrade on a new wheel that has the cassette already installed. Total job complete in about 10 leisurely minutes. Only wish it came with the high-engagement to start with rather than dropping a Benjamin on the upgrade. Oh well...
Hey, which kit did you buy? The one in the video says is not compatible with 370.... I need to upgrade my 370 too
@@JonaCuriel77
I bought the DT Swiss HU1344 kit and it only took a handful of minutes to swap out. I think it is the same kit used in the 240 and 350 hubs. You could try one of the many knock-offs for maybe half the price or less. I’d probably consider a cheaper alternative like that if I were to do it again.
Great video. I'm upgrading to the 350 and didn't know of this upgrade until just now. I was hoping for a sound comparison between the 18T and 54T wheels at the end, but really appreciate all the great info here.
Great narrated video. Love it. The explanation, choosing of words is really vibrant. Now i knew it is pretty easy to DIY the 54T ratchet. Thanks mate
Thanks for the walk through. I love these hubs. So easy to work on. And with 54 teeth there’s great engagement
About to do mine now, thanks for putting this video together!
Nice example and very easy to be implemented. Thanks much
Great bit of info, much appreciated.
Great, great video! Thx Seth!
Nice job on the instructions and explanations.
Excellent and detailed explanation!
thank you. today you saved me when I did not get my freehub back together
Good video. Really helped me. Appreciate.
great vid. super informative. Thank you kindly
Thank you for this! Just about to pull the trigger and do this to my 350.
Mandatory: When doing any sort of hub video a sound clip of the engagement must be provided. Duh!
The noise is the only thing I don't like of this upgrade.
Angry bee sound for the win!
Also I already agree with you because of your Doom-avatar.
Great video. Thx
Wow. To see how much Seth has changed in just a year! Berm peak for the win
😅😂
How often do you have to grease the ratchet after the upgrade?
I have a stock 2021 Yeti SB140 C2 build with DT Swiss M1900 wheels. Is it as simple as doing this upgrade to those wheels or do I need to upgrade the hubs themselves first, then do the 54t upgrade? Thank you.
I have the the DT 240 -18 on my road bike I want to upgrade should I go to a 36 or is 54 more for off road use. What’s recommended for road cycling?
Love these Hubs! I went from a XD compatible (54 tooth) to a HG Free hub. the old setup only had one spring though, I stole a spring from another 350 I had. assembled it.. work fine when I use my hands to spin. When I tighten the axels fully though it will no longer free hub (makes it a fixie). What do I do wrong?
I checked the old hub has the same spacer (bushing).
Hello, i have dt swiss 370...i wanted to convert fron 3 pawls it into rachet system and upgrade it to 54t start rachet. What parts do i need?
Hi, can I buy a DT swiss E 1900 spline wheelset and upgrade the ratchets? World wide cyclery says it is not an upgradable hub?
Hi, i have a DTswiss e1900 which is a 3 pawl system, will a ratchet free hub body for 350/240 work if i upgrade is to a ratchet system?
Will this upgrade kit work on DTswiss YT2020 hubs?
Just installed ceramic bearings into my 350 hubs and free hub however after install free hum doesn’t want to spin as free from each other as I want when Skew is tightened
Is the Specialized Roval DT 350 with micro drive compatible with this kit?
Hi, will this work with M1900 Spline Hubs in YT Capra 2017 AL Comp Bike ?
Can you do this the front Swiss spline hubs?
so no need to grease the axle?
Does it work on DT Swiss 340?
Have there ever been any reports of a "click" sound heard after install? It happens after every single completed revolution of the wheel.
This is just for MTB , for road bikes , it just adds some drag at higher speeds
Could use some help if anyone here has had a similar problem. I did this upgrade several months ago, today on the trail the freehub seemed to be just loose enough that under high power the ratchet would push past a tooth and make a loud "dung" type of sound. I took it all apart and re-greased everything. No damage as far as I can tell. But it seems that my freehub body just does not want to stay at just the right tension to both freewheel and to stay engaged under power. Its either too tight or too loose. I can't figure it out. Anybody have this??
Great video. I’m having an issue where my free hub body has some float (not much) but noticeable when rocking the wheel back and forward..the bearings are smooth, could it be and issue with the springs? Or even the hub body not seated correctly, the hub is about 12 months old..thanks
you probably figured this out but take the wheel off and the end caps and see if there is play from side to side in the axle. If there is play tap the non drive side bearing in until it gone.
Great video. Helpful and precise but I tried to take the hub off my wheelset and even with the cassette on .. it didnt budge!!
DT Swiss have a tool to remove the endcaps. I find sometimes the end caps get a bit stubborn if the bike is well used. Once you have the drive side end cap off it should come apart quite easily.
Hello, are there disadvantages of upgrading my DT swiss hub? In this video they aren't mentioned
36 or 54 ... If you want the thing to last long stay with the 36. The wear on the 54 is significantly higher especially for mountainbikers or people that keep their legs statis a lot. Re-greasing is also something I'd advise for the 54 on a regular basis. It's pretty easy.
My road bike has a second 54, but my MTB has the original 36.
Hmmm... We haven't experienced the increased wear on our end. We do regularly clean and regrease the ratchets, but nothing special. We'll keep monitoring that to see if we can find a difference in longevity too. Cheers!
@@jensonusabicycles Conditions here in the center of the Netherlands are fine sand and wet, not optimal for a long life of chain and cogs.
@@jensonusabicycles Hmm, i have few months old oem 370 with 18 t so what will change if i upgrade it 2 36 or 54 t besides sound will be nicer and it engages faster..but i can live with current setup. I was thinking that if i really want 2 upgrade then i have to buy Industrial 9 Hydra or like. Then there will be huge improvement with ride experience, durability and sound. I think that DT Swiss hubs are kinda crao generally vs Hydra, Hope or even Hunt freehubs
Will this work for a DT Swiss 370 hub? I can’t seem to find much info on the 370. The kit on Jenson doesn’t say for a 370.
You have to convert the internals to the ratchet system before you can upgrade. Theres a good video on what you need to do the conversion. For what it would cost with tools etc, i wouldn't bother. The 370 hub is a good pawl design anyway.
Hi, will the 54t star ratchet upgrade work for a dt swiss XD driver freehub body?
It should, yes.
Great video can we used other name brand grease instead of the DT swiss if we dont have DTs grease?
Yes, you can use your freehub grease or oil of your choice. You'll want to be sure to use just enough to lubricate things without being too thick to allow for proper engagement of the star ratchets. Keep Pedaling!
@@jensonusabicycles Awesome you guys are the best thanks!
Jenson USA could I use suspension grease, for example sram butter?
is the 54t ratchet compatible with both road and MTN bikes hubs? DT swiss 350 and DT swiss 240 both use the same ratchet as well for road hubs? thanks in advance
Yes it is
You didn’t replace the old springs with new ones because they were already new/correct ones? If i would replace 350 version, is it better to use the new 240 replacement kit ones?
Yep, since this was a new wheel we didn't need to replace the springs. Depending on mileage, often the old springs are still useable (and are compatible) but we suggest always using the new set. We tend to keep our old star ratchets and springs as spares just in case the need ever arises. Cheers!
I have a question, is this hub a 370 or a 240? I have a 370 and that bugs me a lot, I'd like to put a 54t if possible
This upgrade works for the 240 and 350 hubs. It is possible with the 370, but there are some internal changes that you have to do to make it work. It's definitely not as simple as this and costs a decent amount more.
Can i upgrade my 370 3-pawls syatem to this ratchet?
yes it takes time and research though
I dont understand how the towel should help...what did you exactly do to take the cap off?
it isnt necessary except to keep your hands clean. the cap just pulls off with a strong tug
hi, this 54t kit works for 370 hubs with 18t ratched?
If it's the newer updated DT370 with the ratchet system and not pawls. If it's the pawl version then you'll need to get the ratchet conversion kit for it then upgrade to the 54t.
www.pinkbike.com/news/how-and-why-to-upgrade-your-3-pawl-dt-swiss-hub-to-a-star-ratchet.html
I have a DT Swiss 370 on brand new Pivot. The hub is "slipping" after about 1.5 miles on the first ride. Every couple rotations it slips and recatches. Any ideas what the problem might be or if this upgrade my resolve the issue?
Very strange for a brand new bike/hub... Could be the ratchet, could be the shell insert that the ratchet engages with, could be too much grease or something in the ratchet system. Not sure how mechanically inclined you are, but DT hubs are very easily serviceable/user friendly so you might be able to tear it down and take a look for yourself to see if there is anything noticeably wrong.

@@jensonusabicycles Yes, star ratchets look pretty good. No noticeable wear on the rathcets, no metal fragments. It feels like the rathcet slipping though. Its a crisp release and then sudden catch as well. Springs are both springy and seem to be the same height. Grease amount seems just about right. Just a light coating.
Will this upgrade work with the dt 360 hub as well?
I have this question too!
Smaller engagement ratchet times amplifies pedal kickback.
Most modern mountain bikes dont have kickback
Will this 54 upgrade be the same on a DT 370 hub?
no
I saw a video where someone replaces the freehub and the drive ring on the hub to make it a star ratchet system instead of the three pawl. You do need both tools so it may not be worth it to you. I would ask you LBS if they have the tools first
@@picorosita you don't need both tools as the ratchet Ring nut can be installed by hand and tightened by pedaling.
One does require some funky parts like a Shim ring, seal, bushing and freehub body though, which can be found by searching for a dt 350 schematic.
Be warned that dt swiss doesn't recommend this, as there are slightly different shapes to the hubs (or so they claim).
Did you guys notice any strength difference in the 54 tooth ratchet gears being any weaker since there are so many teeth they look a bit smaller than the 18 tooth gear?
We haven't experienced any issues with this yet. Theoretically, it shouldn't be weaker since the load is spread over a greater number of teeth, but we are actually testing this with 2 bikes to see if there is any noticeable wear and tear or issues between a 54t and 18t. We'll share what we find once we've put down enough miles. Cheers!
@@jensonusabicycles Right on, much appreciated!
What are benefits of 54T vs 36T for road bike racing. Thank you
should be louder
Quicker engagement is always better for racing
@@svfutbol20 thank u
Engagement, pedal efficiency ... When you pedal it operates on 32 "clicks" but there's space in between where it's not engaged. This 54 (t for teeth) ratchet kit has 54 clicks, which means there's less "in between" areas so it's more engaged/efficient.
@@topspot4834 Thank you I got 54T in it’s amazing. It’s on my UA-cam channel
Will this work on my 350 BIG RIDE hubs?
While we haven't personally done that exact upgrade, we can't see any reason it shouldn't work. Keep Pedaling!
@@jensonusabicycles I did it, was easy! Thanks!
Same ratchets for road bikes?
Yes, the ratchets are all the same, just make sure you're paying attention to the regular ratchet upgrade or the EXP ratchet upgrade because those two are different. Double-check to see if your hubs are EXP or classics.
@@jensonusabicycles thank you this was very helpful
Can you upgrade a 370 ?
Rich Figlia ,
Unfortunately not :( Sitting here with the ratchets I just got delivered and they won’t fit. It’s a different system, be aware of that :)

Yeah, I meant, of course, that u can’t do it with the new ratchet alone 😅
Don't you actually mean the HUB needs to move 20 degrees (instead of the crank arm). Because this will in most cases translate to a much lower angle on the crank arm.
Yeah, small error but the message still holds true; higher engagement hub yields a reduced pedal stroke before power is transferred from the cranks to the wheel. Keep Pedaling!
Has anyone reported issues with these ratchets? I've heard they're prone to failure.
54t are weaker due to more finer engagement points, the 54t are used widely for competition use but will ware much faster than the 36t, for the average rider, the 36t is the norm and last much longer than 54t, so unless your into competative racing etc, go for 36t, the difference between 36t and 54t is minimial, but for comp racing it all counts! 👍
Splittin.Hairs.
Sounding.Sick. 🤙🏼
ATTENTION!!!
It doesn’t fit on the lowest end 1900’s cause it’s a whole different system!
I just took the cassette of and it looks completely different 🙈😅
You must have 370 3 pawl hubs. It can be done by swapping the drive ring and freehub body as well
will this work on the E 1700 wheel / hub?
If it's a 180, 190, 240S, 340, 350, 440, 540 hub yes. These are hub specific not wheelset specific
