I was a Nets fan back then and remember his Pistons debut...I was expecting a beat down because the Nets hadn't beaten the Pistons since like 2004 when they still had Jason Kidd and Kenyon Martin...the fact that they got the W was kind of a sign the Pistons were done already lol
When I heard about the Iverson trade it was 6:00am and I was waiting at the bus stop because I was in middle school at the time. And one of the guys at the bus stop was very happy and said this was an amazing trade, and now the Pistons have true talent but it’s funny looking at it now, because the Pistons became a mediocre to bad team because of the trade and they’ve never really recovered since that trade. It marked the end of the golden era, of pistons basketball and they’ve been so bad to mediocre since what a memorable moment for me as a Pistons fan.
I was in my dorm room and i saw it come across the screen on ESPN. I was stunned especially when i found out they were shipping Chauncey out. As a pistons fan, i didn’t realize that move would set us back this long. Add on the fact that Michael Curry was a first year coach and not knowing if Iverson would start or if Hamilton would start, it made the whole situation a disaster.
Iverson should’ve been signed by the Heat during the big 3. Better than what we had. And he was still a skilled PG lost in the ocean. With no value. One more chance to win a title.
Honestly I don't think he had anything left in the tank by that time(2010) he had just done that farewell tour for Philly and the player I saw was not going to help a winning team, the reasons he didn't win a championship only became more apparent once his athleticism had left.

Great vid. I agree with your Answer (lol), but I think it's worth mentioning Iverson did have a decent month with DET. In the month of December, he averaged 18.4 on 45% shooting and 5.7 assists. The team was 9-5 in that month, and ended the month on a 5-game win streak. Like I said, I do agree with your final opinion though. He had some rough times from an efficiency standpoint, and the team didn't mesh well. Trading Chauncey was a really unpopular move with DET fans, and it only got more frustrating to see Chauncey have one of the best individual seasons of his career in Denver. The end of Iverson's career is really interesting to compare to Vince Carter's. Vince went from being The Man on his teams in Toronto and NJ to a 3rd option guy, to a 6th man, to a role player. He understood what it took to prolong his career and gracefully took lesser roles than the ones he used to have in his prime. If AI took a page out of Vince's book, he would have been more effective in his twilight years, and could have extended his career a little. He wouldn't have been Allen Iverson if he did though!

The coach was terrible. They should've tried Rip coming off the bench. And Rodney Stuckey was the closest thing they had to a point guard at the time I believe.
I think when it comes to draft picks and trades since around 2010, I feel like that comes down to both smart GMs valuing draft picks more, and also looking at the trades in the late 2000's and early 2010's. So you look at say the Ray Allen/Keven Garnett trades and they had a lot of players, but obviously neither package really lined up with those players, and both the Sonics and Timberwolves were on the path to rebuild afterwards. Look at the Carmelo trade and there are a lot of picks almost by nessesity, but also young players and ultimately those picks and players lead to the one year of Andre Iggodala, but also to pieces of the 2023 championship team. The Dwight Howard trade included draft picks that all went to the Magic, and even if they didn't come out of it well, they came out of it far better than anyone else (getting the best player not on a one or no year deal helped as well). And to stop it getting too long, you have the three Nets trades. The one for Deron Williams was mostly a few first rounders and a young Derrick Favors, which while the Jazz doesn't do much with it, there is a lot of potential there for creating a great team. They then traded for Gerald Wallace from Portland with a draft pick that became Damian Lillard (second year a star guard being drafted with a pick in a bad trade). Then just because they hadn't learned their lessons, they traded the farm to Boston that directly built their current team. If you look at that and understand what resulted, you can understand why teams like OKC demanded so many picks when breaking up the Paul George/Russell Westbrook teams, and then with how that has continued to drive how modern star trades are going.
