      @rexbenny1553 2 роки тому +2

      That's really interesting, if anything I'd say it would be more of the other way round, but by the same logic, the converse would also prove true. Meme music is steeped heavily in popular culture and it would have this pervasive almost effect where, it would be on top of the minds of people, due to sheer repetition; and when you come to fusion jazz, a genre that is reliant on improvisation, the mind would prefer to go the latest sonic memory in one's head and due to its sheer pervasive nature, the likeliness that meme music is on that list would be very high; furthermore due to meme music being so due to popularity, when an audience hears something similar, their net positive reaction would also prompt the band to further pursue a very similar sonic variety of music. This really is interesting, So-El, please do share the link to the paper once you're done with it, many of us here would love to read it!

    • @sans_person
      @sans_person 2 роки тому +3

      @@MatthewPherigo well it has not necessarily influenced jazz fusion at its origin, but most current fusion artists have an aura of memeness around them. If you think of how prevalent the lick has become in meme music - but the meme music I refer to is mainly the type where people directly transcribe viral videos and then add complex harmony and polyrhythms to it (like Charles Cornell and MonoNeon)

    "Conviction" great term in these circumstances. I had a very experimental phycadelic rock band when I was 17-20 and we used to have up to 45 minutes long continious jam sessions. The energi, focus and involvment would ofcourse go up and down but now and again when the mood dropped one of us would scream at the top of our lungs something stupid like "show me the fucking money!" or "bring me the cow!" While playing with a rythmical and melodic assertiveness that kicked the whole band into a new gear. I think those kind of collaborations makes you a better musician than any classroom ever could. To anyone who is truly set on making music a big part of your life, you need to find people to play with who tests and pushes you forward.

    This video is gold. The conversation you guys had about what happens during improvisation is one of the most fascinating parts of jazz / improv to me. I played (trombone) from elementary through high school and then just kind of stopped at college (and I regret it). There's a nonverbal conversation that happens between band members and it's amazing when all of the members can really click and read each other.
    It especially tickles me when you get a great percussionist who is picking up on subtle things that other people are putting down, or vice versa. Hearing a crazy sax or piano or guitar riff then get echoed back in snare + cymbal + tom, but then tweaked slightly, and then that back and forth exchange that happens... it's magical, and one of the biggest things I love about this form of music.
    I'm kicking myself for not making the time to see Sungazer when you stopped in Cleveland...

      Not to downplay these guys at all because this was legitimately awesome. But if you’re decent on an instrument, have a good feel for the pocket, and are playing with people you know well musically then it isn’t really to hard to show up with nothing and jam it out. It’s honestly harder to get the right 3-5 people than it is for each of those people to get the skills.
      I’m no musical pro by any stretch. I’ll happily tell anyone who asks that I kinda suck. But I’ve got a good feel for my pocket. I’ve jammed with many groups and only twice did it not suck. One was a three piece that just clicked. And one was a one off “song” with one other guy who barely played the drums but had an amazing pocket feel and musical intuition but with no other hard musical skills or practice. He didn’t even own a drum set and I was playing someone else’s guitar since I was the bassist for the night. The only decent music the night produced was during this smoke and bathroom break. The guy who owned the drums got butthurt and kicked my bro off the set so he could continue footfucking his double kick setup he couldn’t even do clean triplets on and the guy I borrowed the guitar from asked for his Gibson SG back and relegated me to bass so he could continue to dead note his daddy’s money through a distortion stack in our failing quartet jam sesh.

    • @ripvanwando
      @ripvanwando 2 роки тому

      @@regularguy2200 to be fair, they are absolutely killing it for not being a specific type of group. Improv jams are standard for psych rock and blues for e.g., but it's not quite the same as the diversity of background and musical possibility that 'band prac' are pulling from, particularly you can just ride, say, the pentatonic for 20 minutes. It seems harder to improv 'songs' for a whole set, than to have a jam style set. You're right though, its about the spirit of the jam between the group in the room. I've got a purely jam band with shitty garage tracks (matteblackcandyvan on bandcamp), and we primarily improv with a few common jam songs. Still we only one we did (spij), that was with four people and vox....and man its a fine line between chaos and emptiness just trying to make something from nothing. Very different to a 2 piece doing the same. You can't really blame everyone in that jam you describe for being themselves as that's what it demands (of course there's still got to be a bit of give and take). Like you said though, when you sync and hit those points during the jam it feels like you're on holy fire haha.

    • @regularguy2200
      @regularguy2200 2 роки тому

      @@ripvanwando first off, Band Pracitice is amazing and I definitely do not mean to downplay them. Just wanted to point out that with something like this, your chemistry and your ability to play well with others is more important that your actual skill level (assuming you're past a certain skill threshold)
      Second, everyone in that jam sesh I described was hot garbage in both of those areas. No ability to play well with others and minimal ability on their own instruments. You cannot blame someone for "being themselves" in a jam, but they have to be themselves with other people. Not just be themselves, by themselves, around other people doing the same. The only reason I brought up that two piece jam was to point out that chemistry and pocket are so much more important than raw skill that the only music made that night featured a guy on drums who doesn't actually play drums. His pocket and chemistry completely overrode his total lack of "skill".

    Love the vibes on this set so much! Y'all clearly having lots of fun but it does sound cohesive in the end. Great gig! Sounds like such a fun experience - and for the audience, too!

    That was such a cool approach to music making! Showing your audience what an improvisation session looks like in a band is such a brilliant idea!! Also, allowing your audience to determine the mood of a song/piece? Very inclusive! Loved the video from beginning to end!

    Adam just have this amazing energy on stage, and such a good stage precance that I actually tought he was the guitarist for half the video. Never seen a bass player, yet alone a jazz bass player, that plays such a large role on stage. Great to see!

    My favorite track from this vlog was absolutely the "Sultry" and currently running out of adjectives to describe on how all of you are just extremely master at your own instruments.

  • @IanKnowland

    This is sublime. There's music, there's improv, and then there's empathic mirroring within the context of music. To your guy's point near the end of the video, it's definitely still music but you've turned music into the medium of your communication with each other and the audience, gauging reactions and reacting to those. Music becomes the backdrop for the non-verbal one-night stand you're having with the people in the room at that moment. I think that's distinct from simply "making something up on the spot". Always love your content Adam, I'd love to see more of these types of shows and behind the scenes breakdowns!
