- I get so many questions about surfaces to paint on with oil or acrylics, and how to prepare them that I have put this video together.
Head to my website for a list of products I used..

Ms Hirst thank you for the discussion of preparation of surfaces, both board and paper. As an old printmaker I get very irritated at terms used by folks who use terms, and suggest process which are not archieval. Especially if that individual has a traditional art education. I love your instruction and professional terms. It is wonderful. Thank you!
thank you!
Excellent video Sally, so helpful. Thank you 😊
Thanks Sally, very useful!
Excellent video, very helpful!!! Thank you!
Great matter of fact voice, very reassuring
Hi Sally, I’m slowly working my way through your videos! How do you find the Seawhites cradled panels compare to the Jackson’s? I noted Jackson’s do both gessoed & bare cradled panels.
Are cradled panels less likely to warp than flat panels? Would you seal 12x12 cradled panels? 16x16? Do you seal cradles as well as front, back and sides? How many coats...same on all sides and cradles? Followed by how many coats gesso...front, back sides, cradles? How long wait between each coat? Any sanding in between? Good lord...so much to wonder about!
How do you fix wood panels on the wall, as the bottom surface is all flat ?
Sally, instead of wrapping around stretcher bars, have you ever glued the canvas to a panel? 🧐
How would you screw your panel painting into the floater frame?
Thank you!
