One of the things I find rewarding (and sometimes frustrating) about painting is there is always something to learn and/or improve upon. When I was younger, we didn't have UA-cam and all this collaboration; but look at how we can learn and share. Thanks for the video, Chuck :-)

The only "red" oil paint I use is Alizarin Crimson. I like the way its transparency gives the painter a little more choice in which way to go with it. I'm not sure I can agree that "red" isn't found much in nature. I think of holly berries, roses and other flowers, like the Indian Paintbrush (go figure), the red streak on a cutthroat trout, etc. That being said, I don't remember ever buying Cadmium Red, and I've been painting off and on since I was in grade school almost 60 years ago. I really enjoy your videos, Chuck!

Hi Chuck - I've also moved away from red over the years. I often don't put it on my palette or that of my students just to avoid the disappointment - red just doesn't fit into mother natures palette. So we grow in many ways as we paint. Our eyes 'see' more and we learn more. Happy painting everyone - Paul

I really have to disagree with you. there are plenty of beautiful red flowers. Red may not be super common in the wild but it is cultivated by us. While I do believe nature is beautiful, We just make it better. I think sometimes some artists can't see the tree for the forest. haha

@@throgmortonartstudio2402 - I think the take away from my experience is to use red in a limited amount. I still use red occasionally for the odd dot of colour. And yes, a field of poppies is a sight to behold. Almost hurts the eyes. Happy Painting - Paul 😃😃🥰🥰😎😎

I saw a great vid on Eric Rhoades' channel where the guest talked about mixing opaque colors vs transparent. His comment is that when you want to get a more vivid mixture, use a transparent pigment. Your issues may or may not have been with the opaque cadmium pigment. I found that to be true with a few things I mixed up. It's possible that you could adapt to a transparent red pigment. I'm still pretty much a beginner, so I don't have years of experience, but I think in terms of the wheel, and moving around the wheel. The concept of transparent pigment vs. opaque was a game changer for me. I also love the magenta pigment, though!

Another thing that kills color is toning the canvas. Your yellows and oranges will never be as bright as if painted over white and you have to add so much white for coverage that it kills the vibrancy.

Definitely some truth there. That's why I rub out my highlights to expose the white with any large piece I'm starting.

Now I know the other colors may do it better thanks CB I hope you know this new format can be great for you as a teacher, it's already helping us process where your incredible consistency comes from. Hi Chuck! I've worked in oils, acrylics, watercolours, and other mediums. The thing I discovered with oils, (which I definitely prefer), to get more vibrant effects, in both colours and shadows, is glasing, after the painting has dried considerably. I use a mix of several different brands of paints. Some brands' colours are better than others, in some of the colours, where other brands are better in other colours. Magenta is definitely a much better colour to use, than red. Reds work good to darken some colours, but on its own, it doesn't work well in natural settings. Pthalo Red Rose is a good magenta. It was interesting to hear you say you used black on your palette. I haven't heard you say that in quite a while. Your work is amasing, Chuck! The challenges you accept have allowed you to advance in mind-blowing ways!

Very beautiful thoughts, so true! Very beautiful painting (the previous one with the wolf also) and what a setting for the presentation! Until then I thought I was the only one who wasn't happy with the use of red, especially when I needed to create a brown/gold/golden yellow in all its shades. I see that I am not the only one who has experimented again and again. We sometimes end up saying to ourselves that we don't know how to do it, that we aren't talented, since there are three basic colors and black and everyone can do it, especially the most talented. But I see that ultimately the main thing is to find what allows us to express our most personal emotions, that's what being an artist is. I have not completely banned red, I have replaced it and very very rarely it enters, very sparingly, in a shade. Sometimes the color wheel imposes on us the choices of nature. Thank you for this new sharing that is both informative, artistic, and... nature! 🙏🙏

I paint pictures as a hobby. I've noticed that any shades of red are hard to plan for when using them. It's not impossible, but you have to be more careful when using red compared to other colors. Many times I've assumed that if I mix red with certain colors (yellow, blue, etc.) that I'll get the right combination... only to be disappointed. Really study the type of red paint you want in your paintings. That's from my experiences.

Hello, To continue the discussion of the use of red, I would like to add a second comment. Indeed, I expressed my own difficulties with this color but I did not say what I replaced it with. If it helps, I have replaced it very sparingly, when it is essential, with a vermilion red which is very light. Sometimes and especially for brown/gold shades I add a touch of red ocher. Sometimes only red ocher with white, or not. Which then brings me closer to natural shades that are easily correctable for more discreet shades and without too many unpleasant surprises. Of course magenta is possible too. I must also say that I have disappointments with the yellows. Even a primary yellow is never really yellow, always a little greenish which annoys me deeply. Except for dark azo yellow or Sahara yellow. Here too the results are more natural. Just in case this might be of use to anyone. Thanks again🙏

I have struggled with reds also but still use them in mixes like blacks. Or to knock back colors. But yeah they are definitely tricky. The Cadmium reds are usually the ones that get
Me. I like the ones that don’t turn everything brown. Take care up there buddy!

Michael Harding quinacridone rose tends to be my go to red for landscapes, magenta for when I need something a little darker. Also from Michael Harding the rest of my palette for near 20 years now is cadmium yellow, cadmium orange, cobalt blue, ultramarine blue, prussian blue, pthalo blue, pthalo green lake, titanium white No.3 (fast drying) and ivory black. I have Michael Harding lemon yellow but also cadmium lemon from another brand which is less green leaning than the Michael Harding one.

Well this is interesting, My only reddish tone on my palette for years had been Quin Magenta. Recently at a workshop I realized that I had not been using red and thought perhaps it was a failing? This was a wildlife art workshop and the opinion of the instructor was that red=life. So even your blacks should have red added. There are many uses for at least one red as a way of neutralizing all those greens in landscapes.

Hello from the northwoods of Minnesota! Since you started going with all oil paints I’ve noticed something different and thought it was that you stopped using acrylics (which I love) and then you start talking about red and a lightbulb went off! I never knew how much red will KILL all colors. I am always challenging myself with my paintings and now to study the color red and see what happens! Interesting - and a thoughtful video, which I much appreciate: I'm not fond of vids which say do this, don't do that, without really deliving into the reasons. Cadmium colours generally are so strong as to overpower - when you need them you need them, but there are alternatives, two at least of which you've mentioned, and what I notice about them is that they're subdued - they're not shouting at us. Maybe the whites are very important here too? Titanium white, the one that nearly everyone uses, is itself dominant and maybe exacerbates the problem with cadmium primaries .... the orange is another matter, but the Cad Red and Cad Yellow, plus Titanium, can be a bit on the formidable side.
Anyway - I'll go away and think about this; and hope I've learned something. Thank you for the prompt!

Reds. Some fall trees, like maple trees. Flowers. and birds. That's about it. But I use them with green, to get neutrals. And depending whether I want warm or cool, I mix reds with yellows and blues. Oranges are still made up of reds. Right? You can't get an orange without a red. Or A sienna. Or a purple. They all take red. I've noticed, too, that different brands of paint might have the same colors, but differing transparencies. So, there ya go, haha! It never ends. And they're always coming up with new colors! I love experimenting with color and don't think I'll ever get to the point where I've got it all figured out. But that's the fun of it :)

What I learned about colors when I was working as a photographer is that in nature/real life allmost never has true pure colors. Everything is reflecting to everywhere, daylight is diffefent everyday etc. So I think painters are stressing too much to get "the right colors". Peoples brains fixes the colors when they think what colors they are seeing. Simple example: like "milk or snow is allways white" but in real life they allways reflects colors around. Yes red is a rare color but it exists even on sunsets sometimes, but it is very strong color and gets all the attention so I rarely use it on my paintings.

You have to ask yourself!! Where does a thought like that come from if your totally content with the outcome of that study.
I believe It's God !! It's that little bug that pops up and says, Am I truly happy with the outcome of this??
We think we are!! Until you realize I must not be satisfied if this pops up to question it right. I guess it's that inner force always pushing us to change. To become a little bit better by understanding something new we didn't realize yesterday.
    Colors are amazing..
Chuck, I would of loved to of been a fly on the wall in the studios of the great masters. Grinding stones and all the different things to produce the beautiful unmatched colors they used in the old ways of oil painting.. Blows my mind how they understood light and shadows.. All the little things they did that made huge differences in the end.
I mean they only lived half of our age today. So what they must of understood naturally is amazing in the world of oil paint.
Anyway my friend, I truly believe you are one of them that has returned to climb another rung of the ladder and take your gifts to a new level, to share with the world. Never seen by another. You have that push and that something is still missing or not just perfect attitude it seems. That's the prybar to perfection . 😅😅. Always pushing to see it differently. The gift!!
