- Ford VH Transit Knock Engine & Power Loss: DIESEL Pump Timing Solenoid
These are finally available on eBay - ebay.us/Qui1JP
On a recent road trip we noticed the engine started making a particularly loud knocking sound. At the same time the van appeared to be significantly down on power. We managed to limp it home but the top speed of the van was about 100kmh/60mph.
Aside from that the van was also showing code P0149 with the OBD Scanner. Fuel timing error.

Hi sir, i have an issue, i have a ford transit 2002 that dosen't want to start after 4 injector change because i have a lost of power and injector knocking.
Just finished replacing the fuel pump timing solenoid on a rwd mk6 tddi with a vp44 pump. I had errors P0149 and P1564 and loss of power and engine sounding rattly.
Holy crap what a torturous job. Access so difficult.
Some notes to share:
-undoing the torx screws on the Solenoid I used an extension torx bar and ratchet and wedged a screwdriver behind the ratchet and up against part of the engine block to ensure the torx bit didn't pop out of the screw.
-the 4hole bracket at the back of the pump... During reinstall I taped the 'difficult' bolt into the end of an extension bar and socket to make sure it wouldn't fall out when blindly trying to find the hole.
-my old solenoid didn't test as open circuit after removal. Maybe it was still good? But the wires from the upper part of the pump to the solenoid had zero insulation. Maybe it rots with heat and age? I wondered whether the problem was actually these wires shorting together. I put heat shrink on any remaining old wiring.
- after starting the motor runs so smooth and powerful.
I read somewhere it's a 2hr job. I took about 6 hours.
I do not recommend this job if you're not an experienced automotive tinkerer. I has some real "I don't think I can get to this this bolt" moments.
I didn't jack up the vehicle. In hindsight some more room under it would have been nice.
I removed the inlet manifold and starter motor prior to accessing the pump bracket then the solenoid. i didn't remove the EGR valve.
Thanks guys had same issue no one wanted to do it they told me to change the pump but I already bought the solenoid so attempted it myself. Was an absolute nightmare lol obviously because of the space and stripping the last bolt holding the solenoid in place. Spent whole weekend under the van trying to get this last bolt out.
Eventually did and it started on the button and no rattle. So once again thanks!!
Its a tricky job thats for sure. But really rewarding when you fire it up and its all good.
Thank you for this video, its exactly whats happening with my Transit. Ive taken the bit off and the top frame today. Planning on starting stage two tomorrow morning. Really hope I can manage it. This is my bigest job on my own yet.. fingers crossed 😀 Thanks to your video Im confident to attempt it.
From Beccy, in Portugal
How did it go?
Yep had the same problem and ford offered a repair kit when they were knew
UA-cam had no vids to fix it so well done
Love this -
I’ve had one go on me, and replaced whole pump with a one from scrapyard after a load of other stuff done first.
The whole pump is £800 for a reconditioned exchange and the solenoid is £150 ish .
The fuel pump solenoid is definitely a known fail on these vp30 pumps.
This is a really good clip especially of the manifold with all them bolts. The other pain is the vac pump just in front which has the worlds worst gasket prone to leaking and only torqued down to 22nm ish 🙈.
Anyway thanks for sharing this clip there must be loads of folk looking for this.
I noticed your pump was the bigger vp44 - still same thing and the really good thing is you show the engine running and what the diesel knock sounds like. The mk6 engine has either or depending on which turbo size I believe.
One other thing to look out for in uk is the module on the top can be a non bosch part from some bosch suppliers so it’s worth checking if you are going for a whole recon exchange.
If you swap the pump it needs coding in unless it’s a new virginised module.
Nice pivot. Peeps spend thousands on these when they play up. Props. Super ninja skills.
Good work, that looks like a whole lot of fun...
Glad you got it sorted
You forgot the inverted commas on fun
The van saw you working on all of those Beemers and wanted to join in on the action!
haha, yeah that must be it
Previously had absolutely no interest in diesel engines but seeing as this is the Zerotosixty channel I gave it a watch 😉
Good watch still 👍🏻
Great job, I have the same issue so let hope I can get my fix as well, thanks for your video
Mate you're a legend. I have the same issue thinking it was a lost cause but you have given me some faith the issue can be resolved with a solenoid change over. Would love to se any more VH Transit fixes you might have too. - Keep up the great work. Cheers
i used to have a rough idle and annoying engine rattles, i found adding 1:250 ratio of 2 stroke oil to my diesel made all the difference, highly recommend!
Hi are you adding the 2 stroke oil into the diesel tank?
If yes are you doing that frequently! And your not getting any issues with blocked filters or injectors?
She lives on!
Thank you this is the same problem my brother in law is having with his van and being on a wheel chair this means a lot to him... now to see how much it will cost to fix this issue :) Have a great day
Exact knock/rattle that has started on my transit today..Top vid thanks for sharing 👍🏽
No problem 👍
Was it the same problem?
@@liamhurley9284 yes it was exactly that.. Now my van has new timing solenoid and working fine..
Amazing I have the same problem with my van going to change the part and see do it work thanks for the video 👍
Glad it helped
andrew all your bmw skills served you well on this fix padawan lol
Great video. I am helping a mate with his Van. I heard the horrendous knocking for the first time yesterday. His mechanic wanted to replace the whole pump. But like yours it still runs and drives…. Which made me investigate further and found your video. Since solenoid is cheap maybe we shall give that a go.
My mechanic said the same thing. They quoted $3-7k NZD. Keep us updated!
@@destonrodriguez I'd be interested to hear how you got on, I'm in NZ too
Nice work! Yeah .. you know how it is - you want it to die so you can get a better one - but then your'e like .. I got to fix this!! Great to see it wasn't something serious and snapped or broken.
pretty much 😂
I don’t know why more people don’t consult dr UA-cam to diagnose vehicle problems, could literally save you thousands 👍
Interesting Ford Australia have completely stopped stocking parts for these as well which is a shame. So many will go to scrap yard when it could be a simple solenoid like this.
Would have thought on the side of the road that the noise was terminal. Great work!
We legit did at the time. The sound in the cabin while driving was so different. We looked at each other and said.... so i guess we're not getting home. I back off straight away, legit thought it did a rod bearing.
Excellent chaps..where did you get the new solenoid from..I'm in Queensland.have the same van with same problem
Omg that could solve my problem. I have exactly the same symptoms. No mechanic can help me yet. Maybe maybe I have to watch further
Thanks a lot for the video :)
Great video I have a Volkswagen transporter diesel
Great fix guys. So I though only working on my N54 was a big pain in the back side :-p . And maybe time for a new cowl cover too ;-) . Dutch regards, Nico.
Yeah this was one of the more annoying jobs i have done in a while. but its probably just due to not being used to the motor.
Awesome video and what night it must been after bending yourselves up in the space under the lump.
Great tips, I have to try it out on my old girl.
Brilliant video thank u ❤️👀👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Hello, huge thank for the video !!
My ford with the same engine is randomly stalling with different error code.
It makes the exact same sound as yours (tractor like) but doesnt have loss of power.
The codes showing are always different but the ones that comes back are 1593 and 1664. Was it your case ?
I had the same problem with my 2004 transit back in 2007, I removed the pump to have it recalibrated thinking that the fuel had damaged the pump. The shop that repaired the pump never told me what they did as I didn't have much experience of diesels back then but when I put it back together it started working. Sad to find out now that it was more than likely the solenoid and got ripped off by forking out £650 just for a small repair. Anyway now I only drive Toyota so never had any issues!
solenoid is nearly 220qiud pal and most garages will only change the the whole pump because the solenoid can be hard to remove pal I've changed about 20 of these over last ten years some come strait out but some seize badly in the pump then you have to remove the pump which is obviously expensive but I've done about 10 without removing pump 650 is on the dear side but I've known it be 800 so 😉 could of been worse
Did this about 3 years ago had to take fuel pump out because couldnt get old solenoid out was in their good. Did you have to reset timing after? Cheers
Thanks 😀
I had same problem, it was blowing out the glow plugs if i drive some distance in it.
Great video. I have exactly the samr problem. Have been told that I can't buy just the solenoid herein NZ and have to buy the kit and have a diesel specialist set up the pump on the bench. Price estimate $5000- I found the part on ebay also. Will update when part arives and I have it installed. This video is worth Gold. Very many thanks for putting it up.
Solenoid arrived. I had got the torque bolts out after much trouble only to find the solenoid is frozen into the pump. Have tried all sorts but it won't budge. Didn't even think of that possibility after watching videos. Put it all back together and vehicle Still runs. Have it booked in at a Transit specialist in my city. He tells me if solenoid frozen its pump off and try and get solenoid out on the bench. If it won't come out I'm up for a rebuilt pump.
Update. Mechanic could not get the frozen solenoid out. Tried heating it and butcherd the solenoid mount. Ended up fitting a rebuilt exchange pump. Just over 5K. Nice to have it finally sorted. Now have a solenoid I can't return tho.
Do you still have soleniod???
@@andrewbrownlie2764Hi do you still have the soleniod???
@@heidi-siouxrawleigh23 No. Sold to someone with the same problem only he managed to get his solenoid out.
I've been trying to diagnose this rattle for too many months. Thank you.
It's crazy how much of a difference this makes to how they drive.
you can do it all from under the van you only need to take the starter out and the two brackets
Hi mate I'm guessing the reason you cut the plug off was becouse off the coding getting around that problam great vid my is the same van so going to do this thanks pal
No, its just there is no connector on the vehicle harness. You have to hard wire it in.
I have a 2008 the next model is your one known as the T250 Mine does weird things on start up more a funny noise sounds like a pulley belt, it rattles away and am told that these engines are noisy. Anyway when covid hit in 2019 we were out in the van coming home and it was making a terrible noise lots of clacking going on it turned out to be loose injectors on #1 and # 2, AA came and sorted it, when lock down finished Zi took the van for a run and came home with more clacking injectors on #3 and # 4 easy fix. When I brought the van just before lockdown 2019 and had a business trip to collect some pets 160km away well had no power, the turbo was not cutting in, talk about being worried as time was critical on this job, around 1 1/2 hours into the journey the turbos started to work and has done so ever since no power problems a new turbo was replaced in mid 2014 188330kms speedo now around 245000kms the van has always gone to the Ford dealers for work so here is hoping it behaves itself
2008-tdci
Any video for transit 2.0 tddi 2003 with front wheels drag?I have prob with the pump after an repair its stays around 1000 rpm and shakeing.
It's not clear if it's a vacuum or fuel hose, but at timestamp 6:07, there is a very cracked hose, which is below the clamp but it might make sense to fix it :)
Well spotted, that is actually a coolant hose, and runs to the oil cooler/heat exchanger. It definitely needs doing asap.
Hi I have similar problem except mine is smoking really bad black patch left on road is this what yours was doing as I thought mine is injector knock ????
Great video i have spent hundreds trying to find out the cause of an issue and wondered if this may be what i need to replace. When i am driving and want to speed up quickly the engine judders and takes time to slowly pick up. It will pick up slowly but when your trying to overtake at speed its very frustrating and concerning as you want power at that moment. I have taken it to my local Ford dealer who recommended a full service and i understand they changed my oil and done a visual inspection of the van. Which means they did not actually look inside anything and check the condition and as a result all i needed was an oil change which cost me over £200 I collected the van and drive across the road the the MOT garage who then charged me over £700 for the brakes and other work that needed doing. i did complain to Ford but its a Franchise and they were unable to help. Anyway i then asked another two garages to find the juddering issue but both have not found a problem and recommended i wait until there is a problem to resolve it and find out the cause. I just wonder if the fuel pump could be causing the problem and i am no mechanic and a complete novice but i found your videos really educational. My van is not misfiring just just judders and lost of power when i quickly add throttle it does recover but i just wondered if it could be the fuel pump or maybe i am still just grabbing at straws. any advice would be gratefully received. thank you
It could be the injector seals or one of the injectors itself. I would buy some new injector seals of eBay and fit them yourself. There’s videos on UA-cam. And also replace the fuel filter
Plug into a mechanics computer and get the codes read - or get an elm 327 reader and laptop and do yourself with forscan
Hola ahí algún orden al conectar los cables o no importa un polo u otro gracias
4:35 i reckon carbon just deposits there coz the egr valves at the front of the intake but on the side, and it could just be a bad design by ford flowing all the denser stuff into that cylinder.
I have the problem model similar ford defuses. changed the injection pump, the whole food installation and the problem persists. can you help me? is the problem in the pump solenoid valve?
Hi I have a tranit with this same problem. 2003. I see there are 2 soleniods VP30 OR VP44 not sure of which one??
Nice video LOL
Hi mate, my issue is that the revs die as I try to go from a standing start up a hill. They tell me it's the pump timing. So what you are saying here is that if it's a timing issue, you only need to replace the solenoid and not the whole pump is that correct?
Is the engine any quieter?
Mine is noisy, it does my head in! My neighbor has Mk7 and it's so quiet!
i have the same van as you , please can you help ?she starts juddering at 60 mph , what could the problem be ??
Did it smoke while you drove it
I have the same transit Mk6 (85 T260) turbo, which just cut off while in motion. Now it's just cranking and but not turning over... What could it be???
Hello Dear Friend, i have the same problem at my Ford Transit 2,4 Diesel. You have only change Pressure Regulator ? and the bad sound was fixed? if you have litle free time write me about this 2 words, Thank You in advance. Nice Video
My wife has been saying I run like your diesel lately 🤣😢
I like her sense of humour.... haha
Hi, were did you buy this timing solenoid? Thanks For your time
It was from a Transit wrecker on Gumtree neat where we live. He had a batch of them. Unfortunately i dont know of anywhere to get them online.
Please I need your help my ford is having a desel knock problem. The van is not moving smartly and it making grank noise. I need to the parts to fix it . Please how can i order for it. I'm in Nigeria. Please reply
Anyone had or has the same issue with a stuck fuel pump bracket? How did you fix the issue with the stripped bolt? I’m curious! My fuel pump bracket is stuck in place for some reason & i removed the 4 bolts that hold it in place and managed to remove one of the torques screws that were sticking out. The other one is beginning to strip & kinda suck there
Nu am înțeles de ce ai demontat grila de la ștergătoare?
Hola ami me pasa lo mismo pero en un motor 2.0 tddi y he visto que montan diferentes bombas pero la falla es la misma que puede ser?
Is this 2.4 tdci rwd engine
My error codes are P1664 and P1564 I think thats a timing module problem.Could it be this solenoid instead? Has ranyone tried fixing the module on top of the pump?
Did it have a constant diesel knock or was it on and off. Mine is on and off through out the day
??
Im in the UK how much did you pay for this part ?
Before I changed the valve it was smoking and the engine would cut off, now I'm just left with the gnawing. Can you help me?
Sorry sir, that is not something i can help with.
please new part number of solenoid valve .
Dude pls reply
m I wrong or is this the 2.0 tddi 85kw like in the mondeo mk3?
I have fine noise until 2k rpm
And then it sounds like this one in the wideo but much faster bcs of turbo hit it does gain power but its not like it should be its like 60kw not 85.. do u think its the same thing as u changed??
Sorry man i have no idea.
Thanks for the video, do you know the part number? Or anything that's compatible
Sorry, no
Bosch dealer/diesel service centre will supply it - you can google them for one near you
Hey there,
It seems like I finally thankfully found out what's wrong with my transit.
Can anyone help me please. How do I figure out which is compatible with my pump? On eBay there are all these numbers ..
Thanks a lot
Does it matter which way the wires go when you re-connect them?
Says no, near the end of the video.
hello friend, my car ( ford transit 2.2 dtci 2010 ) engine is cold or hot, the fan starts, it shows diagnostic code P0180 and P2563. the engine has run out of oil
I am sorry but im not familar with what that problem may be.
Did you get a check engine light with that?
yes
Does anyone know if the solenoid can also be responsible for the van shutting off after a few seconds?
Thts generally a sensor of some kind, crank/camshaft etc
where did you get your solenoid from. Thanks
ebay...... nothing but the best here..... LOL
Como se llama la pieza que pones?
Damn transit stole a BMW video from us :)
I was not happy about this..... haha.
Hi I have the same problem how much and where can I get the solenoid from please
hey mate, i was lucky enough to find one local on gumtree, but that is long gone.
I've got one of these old girls...66kw of unchained fury hahaha
Sounds exactly like problem I'm having. Glow plug light comes on and engine just goes idal. Struggle getting up a slope and won't go over 50. 2002 2.4 minibus
Did you change your pump in the end?
I have a 2002 minibus.. only gets up to about 50 and barely gets up a hill!
Mine same any one found owt?
I'm part way through, and Im starting to strip the screw to the solenoid. How do you get these out safely, and what happens if they're stripped?
Mine come out ok. Seriously take your time. Use some heat. Warm fasteners often loosen easier than cold ones
What's best to use for heat? I'm seriously struggling :s
@@bmci007 I would use a small blow torch, or heat gun. With a blow torch make sure nothing can burn, or melt. You just want to get the metal to a higher than ambient temp so it expands a little.
@@ZeroTo60Tube Ok, got a mechanic to remove the screws to the solenoid. I've put everything back together, connected the battery, and it's a no start, no crank. Just a red warning light on the dash... Just to confirm, the starter motor has 2 connections, not 3, right? The only thing I can think of is that I failed to connect a third cable to the starter motor? Got any ideas?
Finally sorted, got ALL the cables fitted to the starter, and it FIXED my issue! Thank you very much for your help, this video was a godsend!
do you know what is the part number for that or where to find it?
These are finally available on eBay - ebay.us/Qui1JP - i dont know the part number but its the VP44 solenoid that i used. The one with the little pig tail wiring
Mine has all these symptoms and also won't idle and cuts out could this be the fault
very possible
Where you can buy the solenoids, especially the metering one?
We got it semi locally a guy on gumtree had a load in stock. Unfortunately he doesn't have them any more.
@@ZeroTo60Tube They are very hard to find used and new they are more expensive than the van...i wish there was an alternative to the obsolete pump...
What is the cost of changing the pump timing selonoid
Free if you fit it yourself. The sensors are about $250AUD and it takes about 2-4 hours to do. So what ever labor rates are in your area should give you an idea on total cost.
Will it do any harm to the engine driving it like that
I am concerned the incorrectly fueling may lead to issues.
Did this issue generate any fault codes?
it did, but i cant remember what they were
How long did it take you?
I rememeber a few hours. But was also so many years ago, i can't remember exactly.
My Transit get to 3k revs (no matter what gear) and then loses power and lurches, followed by a puff of smoke when power is restored (then loses power again). Is this something that could help?
This could cause those problems. But could be other issues.
@@ZeroTo60Tube I've cleaned the EGR and replaced the pedal cause they were throwing codes... Not sure what else to try :s
When are you pulling apart your N54 engine?
When Jake can bring the tools around to do it. I don’t have the long torx bits for the head bolts. I need to get it done to see if the bore is scored.
@@ZeroTo60Tube You need to get it done to keep us tragics happy!
@@ZeroTo60Tube Hanging out to find out what went wrong before I mod mine. PS: I also have Ford TranSHit worse thing I ever bought.
What problem did u have with this middle torque bolt , I get to the stage I cant uncrew it, any specific torque key did u use?
I’m sorry I can’t remember it was so long ago
I got it, just bought proper tools, and unscrewed it

How long did it take to fit
2-3 hours from memory
So were on the motorway/highway and the engine light comes on (coil like symbol) and the vehicle loses power completely. This goes on for hours and a 30 minute journey takes 4 hours. Power goes then starts straight up but with a rattle, and either gave us 3 miles or 17 and then the same thing happening. Hoping the fix is this simple. The power loss was crazy. Couldn't even climb hills. Anyone else has this issue ?
It sounds just like this solenoid, but more so an intermittent issue, not solid broken like ours. Definitely worth starting with the solenoid replacement.
Put a Barra innit :)
Have to cut the firewall out and the engine would probs sit inside the van 😂
Is there anything you dont have a crack at fixing? 😆
🍺👍👍
Problem solved ?????
Triton owners be like... dats normal diesel knock and power
how to buy solenoid
I found this on gumtree, are you based in Australia
How much was the solenoid please ? Mine is doing the exact same thing the fault code says fuel pump so uam guessing its just this ,thank you for the film
I have this problem.
I just for the life of me can't seem to find the solenoid for less than £270 !!!
Any help would be much apreciated
Do you have to do a pump learn
No we didnt, she worked perfect straight away.
Iv just done this repair now van won’t start 😭🤣
