There's a yellow plastic tool supplied by ford themselves that is designed to hold the pump sprocket in place and the timing chain in tension whilst changing the pump. Just twist the plastic bung out of the big round hole in the timing cover and pop the tool in. Undo sprocket nut and three torx bolts and your done. No need to replace the timing chain. Proper recon pumps are around £600 UK sterling or chance it with a second hand one for £50. Recon ones self code on first start up but a used one will need recoding on a Bosch kts diagnostic or similar. Maximum three hours work to do including recode. (Obviously longer job if doing chain as well but any more than a days labour and your mechanic should hang their head in shame.) Don't ever assume that dealer mechanics are more capable than others. Same as any trade you could mention, there are always the good and the bad.

Yep he got bummed. I removed and refit my injection pump and got it reconditioned. Took them a day and cost me just under $1000 New Zealand. Took me 2 hours to remove and an afternoon to refit. Reconditioners had it for a day.

Basic e bay search, injector pump $1800 au. I am not a mechanic but I would change myself. Lots of youtube how to videos.
Local mechanic could have charged up tp $1000 labour so worst case scenario about $3k job. Still a bit of money when they cost $4~5k now.
I picked one up for $3.5k, engine is purring. But I’ll be ready. Fingers crossed. Thanks for shareing your experience.

I was talking to a mate about this and he said he had the same issue, it turned out to be a software computer issue and not the pump at all. He down loaded something that he could diagnose it and re set it but it kept doing it about every month. He showed the fix to ford and they wanted to know nothing about it, they just wanted the 8k. Cheers mate

I had ford mondeo 2.0 tdci. I did similar thing with the program called forscan. I did it when the car went to limp mode. It usually went into limp mode on hard acceleration. In the program you insert each injector code according to cylinder, that resetted the whole thing and you could drive fine, no limp mode. I always carried my laptop and ELM327 with me when driving. This happened once a 1-2 month, then once a week and then eventually this came so often that i had to sell the car.
As i understand, this was not the solution, it was just to postpone the repair of injectors and injector pump etc. Injectors were about 250-300$ each. Principle is when injectors are bad, then the pump is bad, that is because when pump wears out, then it separates small metal shaving and wears out injectors. And when i investigated further, you need to change fuel tank and fuel lines also... . Because when you buy new pump, the warranty is valid only when you change the fuel tank and fuel lines (small metal shavings are still stored in there because of the return line from injectors).
It was expensive. I was young, i had no money, so i sold the car for like 300$ and bought for 500$ volvo 850 2.5tdi (mechanical pump), driving it already 5 years. When i sold the car i swore to myself, i would never buy a ford again.

You can by pass the fuel pump. It’s very straightforward, we fitted a bendix race fuel pump. Works perfectly & reliably. You’ll have to fit a relay, (basically a switch). The Bendix “Gold Top”, produced for Race Cars is readily available & will cost around £80 Sterling. The Garage that we use have done 4 or 5 Ford Transits in the very same manner.

In Australia you can buy an "engineered" conversion kit to fit a Holden V6 and four speed auto to Transit vans for about $1,500 and a good used Commodore motor and trans for maybe another $1,500. The thing will go forever and is much nicer to drive, for half the price! Anyone with reasonable skills can do the conversion themselves.

Just tighten up the fuel pressure regulator on the pump, job done.
    Three little Alan key bolts.
If they are slightly lose they will effect the running of a vehicle.
There is no trouble codes that directly correlates with the high pressure regulator.

Injector pumps on these were always a weakness, but they're fixable. However if you go to ford, you get your pants pulled down.. On these, they're repairable with knowledge using breaker yard parts. They also rust like a bastard but that can be fixed too.
However if you jump forwards to the 2011 onwards models - those are equally soft on the "It'll break" front - they also rust like a bastard (worse even) - and they are NOT repairable. I wouldn't advise anyone to touch one with a 9 foot pole unless you like throwing away money. From 2011 onwards, the steel used changed - it still rusts like every ford van does, but they rust EVERYWHERE to the point there's no "good metal" to work back to - and the steel is as close to un-weldable as I have ever come across. The amount of inclusions (other metals that aren't steel) is unreal - it's like an alloy of junk - probably due to too high a recycled content. It burns & spits like you wouldn't believe when you try weld it.
If you parked a rusted 2004 Transit beside a 2012 one & took a good, proper, expert look, the levels of corrosion would be close to identical - however the 2004 one can usually be fixed. Not easy, but do-able. The 2012 one, I'd be shaking my head & comiserating. Unless the RH front where the inner arch meets the firewall is gone in the 2004 - very common - than that's for the scrapper too, because you ain't fixing that for sensible money either - we see a good few like that too. IMO, if you are considering buying a Transit, cheap or not - bring someone like me who works on them daily, with you - it might just save you a lot of dosh. :-)

just saw your video, I have been a Ford Transit Driver all my life, 3 years ago I bought a newer updated version as my old Floor change had so much rot in the bodywork, yet the engine was fine. I bought a Transit 140 T350 Custom limited edition it had so much more than my older versions. I drove it for about 6 months with just minor problems then went abroad for 18 months. Came back and replaced the battery,(JUST OVER £100) then found the oil had leaked out of a hole in the sump pan where it had rotted (£340 FOR A NEW ONE) ( £20 FOR GASKET SEALANT) ( Oil required about £30) Labour is undisclosed at this point. The rear doors and side door wont open, Key Fob is not opening the doors. I tried all the reset stuff I read about and nothing has worked. I cant get it to the garage, and if I did it I fear what the cost would be? My old Transits were great, I could have unlocked individual doors and no problem. At the moment I cant get my tools out and have just about had enough, so unless something happens in a few days then I will take a Disc Cutter to the ******* Door and get it open, get my tools out and sell it for scrap!! Put a Commodore V6 and either auto or manual behind it. Better fuel economy and more power. The V6 engines are a dime a dozen from the wreckers. You can buy a kit from a firm up in Moree or Taree , I forget which one, and all you need to find are 4 main wires for the conversion. Flush your fuel tank out and shorten the tailshaft and Bob's your uncle. Google V6 Commodore conversions and you might change your mind about selling it. I've seen them done and they fit in with heaps of room in the engine bay. Cheers Mark.

Total time: 5 min replace cylinder, 10 to bleed, with large syringe pushing from below, 45 to bluetac. ONE hour. On my lawn, no jack required.
Local garages and dealer too, quote 6 hours in their workshop. Got the master and slave together for Ausie $166, fluid 20 all delivered to home. Shop online. The bluetac, with cotton as backbone will drop off to bottom of bellhousing with other dross. Shop around for parts and save.

(until 2020). A warning to anyone out there who goes to the dealer... they are like a fast food joint who want to up sell you. Look at the quote and ask Is this part broken? No then why am I replacing it. The chain rail and timing chain should not have to be replaced at 200k. I would expect a rebuilt engine for $7700 (AUS?) or CDN! Chalk this up to learning experience. Hate to say it, but I always have bought used vehicles; and I always budget for $2-5k in repair on the vehicle after I purchase it. It may not need it straight out of the gate, but people don't sell vehicles that haven't pissed them off. They may trade them in at the dealer if they're the kind of people that regularly swap cars… But if you're talking about a private party sale, you generally won't find somebody selling a vehicle just because they feel like it... they generally want to get rid of it because it's too much of a hassle.
The last two trucks I've had one of them I had to replace the injector pump on it, and one of them I had to put a new turbo on it. Both of them turned out to be great vehicles which I put over 300,000 miles on them… But both of them required me to put a few thousand dollars of maintenance in early on.

It uses a bit of fuel, but I just was under it and noticed neither 02 sensor is plugged in, so that would explain. Any update on what you ended up doing with your van? BTW, it is often water in the fuel that kills diesel fuel pumps. I have heard of people replacing the pump and not draining the fuel tank to remove any water... and killed the new fuel pump... DoH!!

But I had my car diagnosed with the same problem and the same solution. However, it turned out to be a design fault in the ECU i.e on over heated chip which made the car run on only two cylinders. so it looked like a injector issue. I had the ECU repaired and a better heatsink on the chip and its been perfect since. Yet the first mechanic was certain it was the injectors. It only cost $200 to fix the ECU. We have EXACTLY the same vehicle, same engine, g'box, fit out everything which we bought dirt cheap (AUS$2200). We have converted it to a camper as well. But it has starter motor issues and is only running on two cylinders. The injectors are bulletproof, so I'm told, yet the parts guys love selling them to you because they are as much as $1800 a set. I've heard of the fuel pump disintegrating as the tolerances are as low as 1-2Microns so it doesn't take much to upset them and ultimately destroy them. Have it removed, inspected and cleaned if the van has done more than 150,000kms. Otherwise you could end up needing a new pump as well as the injectors as the metal from the pump ends up inside the injectors.. Ouch!!
The other issue no one seems to talk about is that they a super super easy to steel. Easy to break into and easy to clone the key on the spot with a $20 gadget available on eBay. So you MUST put a Chastity Belt on the ODBII port and either a MF big padlock or a special set of Transit door locks which cost a bomb.

George. I found out today that the high pressure pumps CAN'T actually be cleaned. They either work or don't work. When they go they go slowly. Bits of debris end up in an injector (like yours) and then its game over. So I'm looking into more filters! Unfortunately these diesels go forever. You can get 500,000K's out of a Transit like yours but the diesel side of things is expensive and not everyone knows how to fix a modern electronic diesel so they just replace things until it works. Very expensive way to fault find. I think that's what happened with you.
We were told our injectors needed replacing because they "'might be dirty"' (BS! they are indestructible as they are under 250 Bar of pressure they can't block from dirty fuel, unless you get swarf inside, even then they are rebuildable). We then substituted one of the misfiring injectors with the working one next to it, NO diff! We were then told the Injector module was gone so we looked at that, substituted the module aaah NO DIFF! It ended up being a blown $2 fuse and possible chaffed wiring. Took a few weeks to figure it out and about an hour to cleanup the wiring loom. Mechanics are notorious Rip Off Merchants. Sorry you had a bad experience with you Tranny!

The first warning signs of an malfunctionig injection pump is the engine is wandering as put on idle, still you can drive the car for months before it starts limping while driving. Yes beware, they are a special beast, mechanics in general don't know how to fix them and will likely fuck it up, you need a transit guru. I bought a cheap Aussie 2004 2.4 high output with shattered ring gear, First mechanic put the wrong flywheel on it so the timing was messed up(actually the aftermarket part supplier lists the wrong flywheel for this model, go oem). Eventually got refunded for this work. They sent it to a diesel mechanic who insisted it was a diesel injector pump. When installing it let the timing chain slacken and dropped a tooth and stuffed timing even more, pretty sure now that it wasn't the pump, will be seeking compensation. Couldn't get it going, said it was electrical sent it to auto electrician. He couldn't get it going but put me onto a mechanic that is a transit guru and does all the local Ford dealer transits (I suspect because even Ford doesn't want to touch them). Finally after almost 1 year the thing will be ready in days and it has been a absolute nightmare.

OK. I have this exact same vehicle bought as a 'NO GO' at 'Graysonline auction' (local Australian auction house). I bought the van for AUD$2200.Bargain right? RIght!
Turns out the beast was very well maintained but wouldn't start, and if it did, it would only run on two cylinders.
It only had 183,000Kms on the clock and I'm not a mechanic but am advanced user etc. It turned out to be a common fault in the ECU and a almost dead starter motor. The clutch was full of water because Australian downpours are so heavy that they fill the scuttle panel to overflowing in minutes if they are not perfectly maintained and the water flows into the engines bay and onto the clutch housing.
So all in all, it cost me $800 to fix the ECU issue (I had to fix it becuase an unregistered car cannot get a new code from Ford for a new ECU). The Exedy full clutch kit was $1386 on ebay including DMF, clutch, tools etc and delivery. The clutch will last 600,000+Kms in a campervan so it will never have to be touched again.
    All up cost?
$2200+$800+$1400+labour for clutch($600) = AUD$5000. Its now perfectly drivable has all new fluids and filters for that price and is ready for rego. You can not tell me these vans are expensive. Just don't throw yourself at the mercy of a dealership, buy the parts yourself, find a trustworthy diesel mechanic and have patience. These are good cars in general. Not luxury, but predictable.
I don't believe the injector pump actually went on your car as that's usually the cause of very poorly maintained vehicles when the fuel filters are not changed regularly. Otherwise they do not cause problems.
The biggest dealer rip off are the injectors. They will tell you any amount of BS to get you to buy a new set of injectors if it doesn't run smoothly as they are round $2000 a set. They never ever fail on this model but its a great way for them to make serious cash by changing the filters instead.

Yep I did my research and then bought a petrol 2.0 version due to the price of replacement parts on diesels. Got about 330kms from the original purchase date and the power steering pump died. I`ve got receipts for virtually everything else including a sports exhaust but the one thin not done was the PS pump. I`ve just handed the plates in due to the hassles of trying to find a pump. Bought a motorbike instead. Meanwhile I`ll strip what I want out of the van like all the solar equipment etc and get rid of it. Then I`ll start again. I thought being aussie made might have meant the parts were at least available but cant get a single pump in WA and the Ford Transit Specialists gave up trying to get 1 for me. This is why I stayed away from Fords for so long after having uses with another that was only 11 years old years ago. Parts you COULD get were pricey and the price of those you cant get is irrelevant yet they still wanted me to get my vehicle towed to them, pay for parts then just wait - screw that. I`ve had it with Fords. Never had these issues with any Holden in my life and generally the same parts of the equivalent year Holden's is like 1/3 - 1/2 the price. Never again will I own another Ford. The girl that just moved out of here 6 weeks ago had a XR6 Turbo and man did that have some major issue. In the years she was here she would have spent over $5000 on genuine parts when they were the parts that kept breaking done in the first place. Couldn't even get a water leak fixed properly and after over $1500 on that the motor nearly seized 1 week after she got it back because they lied about fixing the issue. A water leak - LOL

Indicators would fall out under breaking or turning and I did see this occur myself. On the automatic version the gear position sensor would not detect what the gear was during driving and then shut the car down.

      @noevilea624 7 років тому +1

Makes me wonder where yours are being manufactured. I`ve seen a few people that swear by them but in general the Fords I`ve own have had issues with parts. I had a 1985 - 86 1.5l Ford Laser GL and that 1 had the top radiator hose blow 3 times in 2 years because of a design issue making the hose run close to the exhaust manifold. Replaced the water pump twice in around 7,000kms and the carby had to be taken off to be rebuilt over 2 weeks because I could buy a new one. $400 for a damn carby rebuild on a car that had less than 30,000kms from new.
When you come from a servicing industry you get trained to look at things from a certain perspective and for me the issue of reliability and availability of components gets personal when they are more interested in selling you a new/2nd hand car instead of helping fix problems engineered into the old ones.

I’m not surprised you had problems, given the age and mileage on the van. It would have been an idea to check a breaker’s yard. I’m in the UK, but I scrapped a Transit last week, a 2004, with 105k on the engine and no mechanical faults. If you had been here I would have given you the parts for free!

      Thanks mate .
I did search a few wreakers but couldn't find anything unfortunately

Welcome to the world of diesel engines. I believe most diesel pump repairs are expensive.... but dealership repairs are crazy.🙁

He he this happened to my 2006 ford transit here in Ireland last week. Lucky I've had it for 5 years so I've had good use out of it. It just died, as I was 30 minutes into a 1.5 hour drive. Acceleration just died, engine went into limp mode. It showed the glow light on the dashboard and I had never seen that before on the Transit. I pulled off the road, and turnned off the engine, and it turned back on right away. Wend to mechanic next day and it came up with main injector pump failure. I've read on the transit forums about same thing happening, same error codes but it was moisture in the fuel filter, so I'm going to have that changed first, and if it still happens I'm going to buy another van and scrap this one. My mechanic told me it would be 1,000 euro for the new pump and it would cost me just over 2,500 euro in total to have it fitted. That's what I paid for the van. Think I'll buy another HIace. I had a Hiace before this Transit and it was great. Wasn't so good on fuel as the Transit though.

They seem to fail around 100,000 miles. Its a £1000+ repair bill in the UK. It went on the older Durtorq DI in the 2001 onwards in the original design.

God I wish I saw this yesterday. I just bought a 2006 Ford Transit! But its only done 86,000km so perhaps I'm safe .... for now! And I got 3yr mechanical warranty.

Hopefully you'll be fine mate ! Mine had a fair few more km on her. Plus your 3year warranty would come in handy 👌👌

Another poster, said there are three Allen Key bolts that tighten the fuel pressure regulator on the pumps and that there are no codes which correlate directly to pump issues. First thing to try in future, perhaps.
Also, another poster mentioned blowing air through injectors and then putting injectors back on and running engine for 30mins fixed his problem (diagnosed by RAC as 'pump had gone').
Also, another said tool can be bought from ford (yellow tool) to replace pump cheaply and easily if parts guy could be assed looking for it properly for you.
Furthermore, a poster mentioned evidence that Ford replaces 'brain' (computer or sensor?) to one that is inferior to [deliberately] limit engine life. According to the poster, the stock manufacturer brain could prevent issues. Logically, but unlikely, Ford might replace brain for more sensitivity maybe though? I'm not sure if the poster meant the brain for the whole engine or just the pump.
Finally, another mentioned a rubbed wire was the only real problem in the end.
Hope that helps. Wrote down so I could copy any post to my notes too. Tried to post screenshots but phone wouldn't allow. Good luck. I like the Transit sizing too.
