Replace fuel pump timing solenoid ford transit 2004 2.4L diesel

- This video will show you how to replace the fuel pump solenoid on a Ford Transit 2004.
After the error P0149 - Fuel timing error found on the calculator I decided to change the fuel pump timing solenoid.
But it couldn't fix your problem because it could come from another part, for example your timing chain.
But no worries, it’s highly unlikely that a timing chain may “skip time” or stretch enough to cause a fuel timing problem
If you want you can check these websites to know what else you can do before to remove your timing solenoid.
1) www.obd-codes.com/p0149
2) www.troublecodes.net/pcodes/p...
By the way i'm not a native english speaker I hope I didn't make a lot of mistakes.
If you want to ask me some questions, feel free to do it. - Авто та транспорт
Just finished replacing the fuel pump timing solenoid on a rwd mk6 tddi with a vp44 pump. I had errors P0149 and P1564 and loss of power and engine sounding rattly.
Holy crap what a torturous job. Access so difficult.
Some notes to share:
-undoing the torx screws on the Solenoid I used an extension torx bar and ratchet and wedged a screwdriver behind the ratchet and up against part of the engine block to ensure the torx bit didn't pop out of the screw.
-the 4hole bracket at the back of the pump... During reinstall I taped the 'difficult' bolt into the end of an extension bar and socket to make sure it wouldn't fall out when blindly trying to find the hole.
-my old solenoid didn't test as open circuit after removal. Maybe it was still good? But the wires from the upper part of the pump to the solenoid had zero insulation. Maybe it rots with heat and age? I wondered whether the problem was actually these wires shorting together. I put heat shrink on any remaining old wiring.
- after starting the motor runs so smooth and powerful.
I read somewhere it's a 2hr job. I took about 6 hours.
I do not recommend this job if you're not an experienced automotive tinkerer. I has some real "I don't think I can get to this this bolt" moments.
I didn't jack up the vehicle. In hindsight some more room under it would have been nice.
I removed the inlet manifold and starter motor prior to accessing the pump bracket then the solenoid. i didn't remove the EGR valve.
So did you put a new solenoid on? And did it cure it?
@@danhickling3565 yeah, new solenoid and it cured the problem. So smooth now. Bugger of a job though
@@jeffn1384oh good, just hoping mines the same, was a bit worried because mine tested for continuity until I connected it to a battery and now it’s dead. I’ll keep my fingers crossed
One of the clearest mechanic advice videos. Thank you.
thank you ☺️👌
Thank you very much for posting this and showing testing (ohms). I have a USA spec BMW 524TD that as a Bosch VE pump but with one difference: timing advance was electronically metered with the solenoid. Different from the euro spec 524TD was all mechanical.
It was difficult to find info on why 95% of the Bosch VE pumps in other cars in USA (cummins, cat, etc) did not have the same thing. Then I started looking at the next generation of pump VP30 and VP44 and sure enough, there's the exact same timing solenoid.
Thanks for posting!
no worries! thank you for your message!
This works, it's a right fiddle- but i've just done it. Symptom of timing solenoid failure is- engine sounds like a bag of nails and you have a large loss of power. This is because your injection timing is now completely out. If the vehicle won't run it is either the metering solenoid between the pipes at the back of the pump or the PCB within the top of the pump. If you have the locking kit which is £25 from eBay- i'd say it may be easier to just remove the pump and do it off the vehicle, time wise by the time you've taken the starter off, possibly broken the wiring to the starter in the process, got your head stuck between the engine and subframe, dropped most of the bolts into crevasses and taken ages to recover them, got covered in oil, grease and grit etc etc. Paid for a masseuse to sort your dodgy neck out etc etc. In the UK the solenoid for bosch VP30 and VP44 are available from Transit parts UK (TPUK) Ps make sure when you remove the old solenoid you don't leave the small O ring from the end of the solenoid in the pump as you won't get the new solenoid to seat correctly. This was on a rear wheel drive transit. Front wheel drive i believe may be a little easier......
Is it the pressure solenoid if the van does not start, as I have the issue with my van at the moment , I have took it all off ready to change , but I just seen your comment about the other part in between the pipes , what is that part called, and what would you say it was if my vans not starting mate ?
And if it’s the part between the pipes , how do you remove it please ?
hi sabtoofly thank`s for posting this it was very help full i did this on my freind`s trany , a ford main agent wanted £970 to do this job a local garage wanted £700 ,the solenoid valve cost £225 from a ford dealer i got one for £110 from a inj pump repair shop . ATB JOHN

help me please, do the wires from the solenoid to the pump have plus and minus? does it matter how you connect them?
Hey mate awesome video could you explain one more to regarding a bleeding air (unscrew injections all a bit and then? I couldn't quite understand it..
Turn the ignition 3 or 5 sec then screw it back.
Do the same operation to all injectors
Nice video, helped alot.

What is the middle one sensor for ? What does it do ?
Can u use the same for 2002?
I got an 04 2.4 diesel engine, cranking but cannot start. got 3 error codes, p1665,p1608,p0252. Checked fuses and relays all good.
I have the same issue with error code P1175 with my Ford transit MK5 from 1997.
Please provide us the article OEM number of the solenoid.

What is the problem this vp44 before.stall at idle or intermittent rough idle?my 2004 dmax now sometimes stall at long traffic.sometimes acceleration cut at hiway speed.what is the problem my vp44?thanks for reply.
I'm really sorry but I have absolutely no idea, I'm not a professional mechanic.... maybe someone else will help you, good luck.
Hi 2003 mk6 transit. Rwd 128 bhp. Got bad diesel knock . Will this solve it . I 100% know its the pump. Reconditioned engine fitted and new timing and new injectors. Any help on this be awesome thanks. 👌
Go to your local mechanic and get them to check for any codes. If you get the same codes as in this video then you're probably on the right track
Always clean the starter as they clay up with time.
that's right haha
2004 Diesel Transit, was cranking for ten seconds or more before it would start, then ran no problem except slow on hills. Yesterday finally wouldn't start at all. Mechanic undid a hose and sprayed brake cleaner into pump (? I think), started straight away. No code showing, he said almost certainly faulty solenoid on pump... hopefully that's it?
I don't knwo i'm not a mechanic 😅 I Just made this vidéo to show how to fix this problem... Good luck.
Hello! For me to be 2.0 TDDI mondeo (2001). To me error, engine idling gray smoke, strong throttle black smoke to come. Show me obd two codes: P0149 and P1564 code. Car is easy to start, use, tiny power loss only. At 140 km / h it jerks very weakly sometimes. Even at speeds of 40 km / h, it sometimes jumps, which is barely noticeable. Fuel filter has already been replaced. Fuel injector pump was renovated 3 years ago. Can the fix in your video fix my problem?
What was cause of the problem ?
Old video but what was the sign of it failed or failing..mine has code po0252 fip..and doesn't run properly.. smoking and rough accelerator
I have no idea, I just fixed my problem years ago, if your problem is not the same I can't help you, I'm not a mechanic. Good luck ☺️👌
What where the symptoms of your bad solenoid? I got error codes p1664 & p1564 and the car is on limp mode, had a problem with the electrical part of pump, fixed it but the car is on limp mode , no power no boost and the car is a little noisy. How can i test if it is the solenoid? Thanks
Did you get a fix? I have the same issue
After Checking the solenoid it tested fine, but the insulation was gone from cables. I guessed they were short circuiting causing the solenoid to malfunction. I re insulated them but now when I bleed the diesel the pressure is low. Does it matter which way the cables are wired? I've tried swapping them around but it has not made much difference. Any suggestions welcome!
wow that's really weird, I think there is no problem with the way of wiring but I'm not sure about that.
knowing it's a solénoïde it should have no problem if I don't make a mistake.
but if you tried both way it really weird....
maybe there is a leak from the solenoide?
have a look to the Seals from the solenoid, are they good?
maybe you have another problem...
check with the odb system
@@thesebgames thanks for your reply. I will check the OBD. By the way I wish to thank you for such a helpful video. There is no way we would be where we are with the van today without your help. Amazing video, especially since English is not your first language.
Thank you I really appreciate 🙏❤️
yeah I read your comment again you should have a leak somewhere, let me know when you checked or find your problem 😊
Sebtoofly I did have a leak on the fuel return line that I had replaced.
Van ran great. No more knocking noise. Drove for 30 min normal then cool light started flashing and went into limp mode and shut down. Dash reads codes DTC 9359 and D262. Cannot restart engine. 🙁
I'm part way through, and Im starting to strip the screw to the solenoid. How do you get these out safely, and what happens if they're stripped

Before I changed the valve it was smoking and the engine would cut off, now I'm just left with the gnawing. Can you help me?
Please help me I have a 2005 2.4d transit in neutral it revs all the way out but one its in gear only gets to 3k-3.5k
Codes coming to as injectors and fuel pump its also very interesting I realised when driving out of a corner the power sometimes comes back and drifts till its back in to straight and power is gone ....😐
I have no Idea, I'm not a mechanic, I have fixed my car and explain everything about my problem, if your problem is similar, you can try what I have done, or the best solution is to ask a mechanic if you have no idea about what's going on :)
@@thesebgames thanks for your answer I have talked to a ton of them and none of them were able to tell me anything new lol I just hoped someone might had the same problem and fixed it

Hey bro I have a 2003 and the pump hast stopped. I'm thinking it's good to do the solenoid check before I throw the van away because it's 6 thousand to fix. I'm wondering if there may be a code to tell me on the computer that it's only the solenoid or perhaps it's the whole pump?
hi! well you have the code on the description of the video and also different links that you should look as well 😊
and yeah... unfortunately the pump is really expensive because they don't build it anymore.
try to find an old one on a Ford transit for spare parts... but I think it's going to be a bit tricky to replace it 😂
Usually if the pump is faulty. It will have p0149(timing error) with p1564 (reduce fueling). Go to fordtransit .org. This is a great website for ford transit repair tips. Get a good code reader (ELM 327 cable with toggle switch for $30) then download forscan software. It's FREE. This allows you to check error codes, program new keys and replacement pump.
If you need to buy a pump. Get one from www.pbasher.com they're about $1300 aus DOLLAR compare to $2800 local. The pump is refurbished and virginised(clear to code) so don't need to have someone program it in for you. Hope this helps.

How to remove the feul injector in this Ford Transit 2004 Turbo Deisel? Please help
I don't know I did this tuturial but I'm not a mechanic sorry mate !
You'll have to remove the intake manifold (just like on this video) for access to back of fuel pump, remove the 4 fuel pipes by undoing their holding nuts from top of injectors and back of fuel pump. Remove bracket holding heater hoses on top/left of engine. You'll then be able to remove engine black top cover and gain access to the 4 injectors.
I would not recommend you do this job unless you have a tool to prime the fuel system afterwards, or you'll never start the engine, no matter how long you crank it for. Good luck
oh okey it's sounds pretty acuate haha never done that before so, I didn't know ! I hope your answer will help Tandy Ta 😊
Hey mate what is the name of that tool socket and size please to remove that bolt above the solenoid
I am stuck there at the moment
Can you please pass on the details of the mechanic that you used for that removal
I am in sydney presuming same as you
(It's killing me that bolt in the middle of flat bracket)
What can I do to start my FORDTRANSIT 2003?
Turn the key????
I have problems with my van ford transit 2008
2008>tdci
How did you know it what’s this ??
Idk I had this error then I asked mechanics, did research then it was this !
how do you know which wire goes where,
I explained on the video, it's a solenoid, so it doesn't matter which way you connect it but if you are worried about it you can try to cut one wire shorter and the other one longer.
@@thesebgames all done, found info on transit forum, cheers
Okey! Try to put the link here in case of someone else is interested
Hi can anyone help me.i am getting p1665 - FIP communications with PCM; P0216 - injection timing control circuit; p1631 PCM main relay diagnosis per mechanics screen.
I have a 2006 ford transit (2005model). Hardly used for last three years parked at home. Always start engine and live it on for sometimes. A few months ago left it running and put off and I don't know why I started it again. Now the spiral engine light flashes. Have replaced the crank sensor...what a time consuming job. Had to get gearbox off to put two screws.
But can still now starting. Above codes coming up. Am based in Auckland New Zealand. People say about $3-4k. Is solenoid the problem. Any help from anyone in NZ. Not rich. This van helped me get up on my feet when I was unemployed doing courier work. It's like a person to me. Sad. Any help. Please Faheem
so did you find the problem ?
@@reloadkTV hi buddy sorry for late reply. I towed the van back home. Had it diagnosed by a fuel pump specialist South African dude he does a lot of work for John Andrew ford in Auckland the main distributor of ford in NZ. In about one minute there was only one line in his scanner which said fuel pump problem. He quoted $4,500. Plus another $1200 to check head as I told him that a few weeks after I got my radiator flushed at John Andrew ford the pipes peaked and I lost power in engine and now have to tip up water all the time.
@@reloadkTV also the South African dude who scanned the van. I had taken to his cousin who is also a fuel pump turbo specialist and he had said the fuel pump was not powering his scanner meaning there was a problem in ecu unit which I took out and took to Robinson's instruments in onehunga Auckland. Hi I have had no error codes at all but my 2.4 2004 has throttle hunting at a certain throttle position. Normally at around 55/65 miles an hour at a constant throttle the engine speed will go up and down continuously unless I come off the throttle or put my foot down. I spoke to a mechanic mate and he said they all do it and it is a sensor on the fuel rail? I don't know much about this but it does not look like it has a fuel rail. Has any one else had problems like this thanks.
I have no idea all I did is the fuel pump solenoid 😅
I unbolted and cleaned the plug out with wd40 as it can get damp in the plug
Best mention that it fixed that hunting problem and loss of power. I actually wrote the above comment as I was sat broken down in my transit tipper

It starts again as if nothing is wrong. Any idea will be appreciated. I have recently changed fuel hose and fuel filter and starter motor.
ask a mechanic to check the obd with the computer
It's getting air if u go to stop and it tries to cut out its air in diesel filter or diesel is not getting to your injectors quick enough or heating plugs
Alternator will make van cut straight out or battery leads check and fuses but I recommend air in diesel filter or heatplugs
