I'm 71. I've owned my one and only home for 40 years. It's over 135 years old. Is it perfect? No! My nephew says my house is smoke and mirrors. Is it? Yes. They say the best homes are decorated in layers. It's true. Rooms are not filled to just fill them. Buy what you love; you're going to live with whatever you choose for a long time, but buying inexpensive lighting, tiles, murals, fake plants, stencils, wallpaper, paneling, etc. can give you the effects you like on a budget. You should go live and let us make suggestions to help you along with DIYs. Are any of us experts? Probably not, but when people come to my home they luv it. I love it, and it really is smoke and mirrors. There are very few new things in my house, and I've done basically everything I wanted myself, and still do. You got this! You're young, you have family and friends, and you have us. Be you, do you, and enjoy your youth. It goes so fast. You'll look back oneday and say, " What the f*ck was I thinking??" Check out Temu! I'm addicted. I just did some updating in my kitchen for 50 bucks and it looks great! Live life now! Ask your grandma. She'll tell it all goes too fast to waste time worrying about what others think. Your home is gorgeous! You're already off to a great start. 🙂👍🌹☮

Most people have more important things to think about than how we look or what we do. Yet, we tend to stress over issues that for most around us could care less. @@kmackblack I learned that decades ago by a TV decorator. Long before these ones on all media today. One of the best tips I got from her is if you can't decide on colors look at your favorite colorful garment and take ideas from that. If you chose a blouse dress, skirt, scarf, whatever it's because it appealed to you. Very few things need to be on the higher end. A good mattress is one and a sturdy couch. Other than those, secondhand or on the cheap is the best way to go. Unless we're anal about knicks or dinks; which will happen to the most expensive new objects, there are quality goods out there for the taking. Decorating is fun and an expression of ourselves. 🙂👍☮🌹

You should start going to garage sales and estate sales for really cool and unique vintage pieces (or just cool pieces in general). That, to me, is the most interesting, and ultimately stunning way to decorate a home. ☺️

I lost my mom suddenly a year ago. A house chock full of beautiful things that I cannot keep. We are having an estate sale. The thought of others truly enjoying the things my mom once did gives me joy. All these pieces with stories and love behind them.

With Wayfair, I’ve found that broken pieces typically don’t need to be returned and they’ll either credit you or send replacements. Just my experiences with dining tables and glass items and lighting and misc larger furniture pieces. They have you keep the broken thing and do with as you please. The customer service calls I’ve been on have always been surprisingly pleasant and helpful especially since I just had a mental breakdown about the broken crap and how I’m supposed to return it. For the hit or miss delivery destruction, the company themselves has literally always replaced things no questions asked with no need to have me do a thing.

Morgan! Keep those extra kitchen cabinets and install them in the dungeon for utility storage. Keep tools and miscellaneous things in there to keep the kitchen and other areas decluttered.

The reason why you feel like a sims character living in someone’s else’s house is because in reality you DONT feel as though you deserve it. You don’t deserve the house, and the life of living in said house that is yours.
I know because my therapist before covid hit told me the same thing when I first moved in with my partner.
I felt like I was playing pretend in this pretend apartment complex with my said pretend partner.
She looked me dead in the eyes and told me “Why is it fake? Why don’t you deserve these real things.” STABB TO MY HEART..when I tell you my mouth dropped and I -😭😭

personally i have found that accepting the fact that nothing is perfect helps me be satisfied, throwing away all my expectations and just accepting things as they are and thinking that things are perfect even when they are "imperfect", that really helps me

From one perfectionist to another: find the good in the imperfect. I found that I was constantly focusing on the negative and looking for it! Instead, I've started to shift my focus to finding 1 good thing within the imperfection. It's been a process, but now I'm able to see more positive and not get stuck in the imperfect loop. I just closed on 10 acres in Missouri and i have a feeling im going to feel the same way as far as it not feeling real when my home is finally done. It’s taken years of saving and it’s been my dream to build a home so it’s gonna feel surreal when it’s done.

I totally understand the hesitation to put things up on your walls. Slow and steady wins the race is exactly the way to go! It takes awhile to make a house a home 🩷 I've learned it's a long game. You just slowly curate the pieces that actually speak to you, so then years down the road you won't regret stockpiling generic Target clearance items that hold no meaning. Am I going too deep? Idk. Personal experience. I relate to your scattered sense of self so deeply. Moving constantly. Hobbies up & down. I was never rooted until I "nested" been in my home 8 years and have a 3 yr old now, I still battle the whim of life feelings but now its a go and come back home. Personally, your journey resonates with me deeply. While you were remodeling, I was building my own home, I've had moments of adoration for it, but also times when I find myself frustrated. I've even resorted to telling guests about my cheap rugs, partly due to my cat's antics, but also because I can't help but feel a twinge of embarrassment.
Yet, amidst it all, your openness and vulnerability have been a source of comfort. Watching your videos feels like catching up with a dear friend. Oh man, Morgan, I feel for ya. I know the hardship, the insufferable feeling, the overwhelming rage over things that I later on thought wasn’t a big deal. I, too, have remodeled a home. But mine was an abandoned home. I thought it was going to be an easy fix but… NO! It was one tragic after another and lots of money to make it right. I was in a rush to make it happen and made a lot of mistakes. And in the end I was unsatisfied because it still didn’t turn out how I wanted expected. And we’re talking about things that were already fixed to the walls, set in place, and were supposed to be immovable. Yes!! I took out all my new cabinets and bought new ones. I took out all the wall tiles and went for a soft stuccoed, faux finish in my kitchen. I took out my brand new marble counter tops and went for butcher block tops instead.
And then I took out a wall and had a laundry room added and put the previous cabinets that were in the kitchen and used them as storage and countertops to fold laundry. In the end it all turned out perfect! I loved it more. All the little things like mirrors that were broken, furniture that didn’t match and whatnot, I just kept switching out over the years and one day, I sat down and looked at what I had thought to myself… wow, I made myself a home. Once you start living in it and adding and taking through the years you just one day find out… you made yourself a home! I was so proud and happy and cozy and content with what I had accomplished. It’s been 7 years since the remodel and It took a while for my empty house to feel like a home. And , TBH, in those 7 years, the original furniture I bought for my house changed over time, when family and friends helped me live it in. My first furniture I sold in a yard sale. Only a few things remained to this day.
I don’t have kids. And I’m not married. But I have had people stay with me. Live with me. And throughout the years my walls were filled with pictures of my adventures, family, nieces and nephews, friends, places I’ve seen. The walls have been nicked, the paint has chipped, spiders have settled in, tiles have been broken, and so on. Because my house has been lived in. All those things I made a big deal of when I moved into my newly remodeled home is only a vision of the past. I do try to keep up with things and fix up stuff here and there when my family come stay with me but I don’t try to impress anymore. It’s too much money. I look through the magazines, Instagram, Pinterest or see something that makes me wanna do this and that to my house, but I’m just like… meh 🫤! Now I just try to cover up holes and dents with dollar store pictures and items that I thing will do the job! 🤣🤣🤣
Now I’m just a happy little, complacent gay boy just living out his simple little life.
And I encourage you to just take it one day at a time and slow down. Breathe. 🧘🏾 and release that 14 year bad luck into the universe. Instead I speak love, patience, gentleness, grace, power, authority, confidence, endurance, strength, hope, boldness, goodness, blessings, wisdom, purpose, prosperity, protection, stability and order into your life, your home, your family, your relations, your livelihood, your finances, and your future. And I take all negativity and anger and anxiety and destructive thoughts and energy and I cast it off your life, throw it to the ground and command it to dry up and die. Just shake it all off and command it to go back into the abyss where it came from.
Pray over your life. Speak positivity over your life and you will see things more clearly. And things will start to fall into place more orderly. You’ll see.

We moved into our little house 2 years ago and very little has been done. What little furniture we have is second hand but since I have incredibly high standards, it takes a while to find the right pieces. I'm talking years! We are renovating very slowly, a front door here, a new fence there...all spaced out over time so that we stay responsible with spending. Some weeks, all we get is a little plant. Other weeks, a power tool. It made me insane but I'm starting to realize that part of the pleasure is the slowness of it all. This place is really becoming my own through blood, sweat, and tears.
