    Have you ever used one of those brushes with tips of the bristles chopped out, the "wisp" brushes? I just got some and am having some difficulties with it. Maybe I'm not using it right? ... probably 😂

    • @PawsByZann
      @PawsByZann  5 місяців тому

      I have, and to be honest I never got the hang of it either!
      I imagine the idea with a wisp brush is that the 3 (or 5 or however many) chunks of bristle somehow make it faster to paint a bunch of little hairs. But it just hasn't worked that way for me. Making a bunch of little hairs in the last step of a painting is already pretty fast, and having a special brush for it just made me look at the details too early. IMO it's better to use a big brush for as long as possible, and then just add a few hairs here and there with whatever little brush you have on hand :)

    I'm sure you get a lot of inspiration from the view from your studio. Beautiful painting! I have a brush like that which I don't really use that much. maybe I should give it another try. Going to watch more of your videos and hopefully the audio will be a bit better-too soft on this one!

    • @PawsByZann
      @PawsByZann  Рік тому +1

      Oh definitely give the brush a go again! Brushes can be an inspiration all on their own :) And thank you for the note about the audio, I've been working on getting it better in my newer videos. Do let me know if it's still too soft in those.

      @@PawsByZann Thanks for answering Zann, the audio is far better now, I've watched all of your videos and the audio is perfect. the brush is now also one of my favourites. Looking forward to more videos

    So I've been looking for a tutorial to help me paint a beautiful picture of my mom's german shepard.....and I think I've found the help I need here! Thank you soooo much for doing this. Is there a list of the colors you are Using?
    Also...I'm painting in acrylic, I searched for that specifically... I just noticed the title of this has the word oil...I hope acrylic paint works for this.

      Thanks Lacey, glad I could help!
      For the colours, I used Burnt Umber, Raw Umber, Titanium White, Lamp Black and Yellow Ochre for the shepherd, and I think mostly Gamblin's "Portland Grey" mixed with white for the background.
      For acrylics vs oil, while the brushwork I do will work better in oil, the overall structure of the piece and how the darks and lights work together will hold true for any medium.
      All the best with your piece!

    Thank you this is such a great film. You have a great talent.
    I am totally stuck painting my first Dog and it’s a German shepherd around 1 m high.
    I can’t seem to get the texture and nose right. Any advice for going big ?

      Hi Phil, that's an ambitious project for a first dog! Good for you :)
      The biggest advice I have for going big is to start with WAY bigger brushes than you would for a smaller piece. I'm talking 3", 4" brushes. House painting brushes work great. If you get everything blocked in with these big brushes, the overall composition, shapes, and lighting are all going to read better from far away. Have you posted your piece anywhere? I'd love to see it!
