Painting Hairless Pets: Cats and Dogs Together!
In this demo, you can see the whole process I went through for this portrait, from arranging the four separate reference photos to choosing a background. Also, rendering hairless "fur" in detail.
Hairless pets are a wonderful challenge to take on in oil or acrylic! If you plan on painting pets in the future or want to expand your skills, you can learn a ton about animal anatomy from hairless animals. Particularly the cats.
While smooth-haired dogs already show some pretty good shapes, cats are... well... adorable little blobs of vagueness, most of the time.
So jump in and see what all the fuzz is about!

Painting a Cat Eye in Oil: 2 Min Painting Process Video
Love the way you explain. So beautiful. Thankyou, you inspired me❤
Hi did you wait for that first layer of ashes to dry before starting the painting? Great video and beautiful painting! 🩶
I just found your channel! I love your pet portraits! You are a great inspiration! ❤
All we see is your arm and hand. Would have liked to see the brush stroke.
I found this really useful, thank you for posting. PS I love your hair.
Wow that turned out incredible! Your clients will be só happy with it, they will never be forgotten. Also congrats on your pregnancy!
Thanks so much! I hope they like the video too, even though it took a lot longer than I expected to put together haha
Do you mix a chromatic black?
Hi Madison, great question! I didn't for this portrait, but it's a great practice to get into. I find that a chromatic black brings more life and artistry to a portrait, but can make true-to-life portraits from photos more challenging because there's more to think about as you're working on values. One workaround I've learned to use recently is to mix my blacks for the blocking-in process, which means all the resulting greys have more depth, and then go in to the deepest shadows with a lamp black afterwards so I get the greatest range of lights and darks.
what colors are in the shadow on the cat's fur like under his chin and on his chest? I am tryiing to paint my white cat, Davy Crockcat, but that shadow is hard to get right
Omg I LOVE his name haha The biggest challenge with getting that shadow right is going to be more about value than colour. The deepest part of Simon's shadow here is a bit darker than 50% grey. You could use a chromatic grey (mix your own from blue, red, and yellow), but I'd start off with grey from a tube. It's way easier to learn to paint values with a consistent colour to come back to. If you want to get really good at painting Mr. Davy Crockcat, here's a great exercise you can do: paint him from a photo and only use yellow ochre and white. Having yellow be your darkest pigment will compress your value scale and make you much better at seeing what you need to paint. Then your next painting in normal colours will be really good ;)
Thank you Zann! What a great demo! You have inspired me to try oil paint in my pet portraits , I usually use pastel.
Wonderful! Pastel shares a lot of qualities with oil, I wish you every success!
you are very cool! Thanks for sharing!
Wonderful and informative
Thanks Anne :) Glad you think so!
Are you using a photo reference?
Can you share the name of the colors
Thank you for your fantastic videos! 💖
Perfection!!!
Omg the music is so annoying. Couldn’t stay.
What size of stretch canvas are you using?
Süper hızlı süper
I love this!! Thank you!
This is such a good painting it dosnt diserve no comments
Aww thanks Breanna ^_^
great tutorial - thanks for the helpful info
Glad it was helpful!
Wow! That was amazing to watch, you are so talented!! In the first pass you mentioned medium, do you use linseed oil in the beginning or mineral spirits? Thanks for sharing!!
Thanks Astrid! I was using a mix of mineral spirits and linseed oil, but mostly mineral spirits. I find mineral spirits make the sketch easier to go over in subsequent layers :)
What brand of oil paint are you using? Thanks
Absolutely amazing, thanks for sharing
hey I want to edit your video for look more smoth and 4k
Quite helpful and soothing 🙂Thnx
Thanks! Glad to hear ^_^
¿Donde está el modelo para ver como va??? Eso lo haría un poco más entretenido, gracias..
This was so helpful!
This is great, thank you! Could you name the type/make of brush you’ve used? Thank you
For sure! My favourite brushes for whiskers are short filberts or brights. Brights work better for thick, long whiskers because they hold more paint in the tip. With brights you can make a longer line all in one go, but they're not as precise as the rounded tip of the filbert. As for the make, I usually use pretty cheap brushes for my fine lines haha. If you're looking for the right effect, look for something that is stiff enough to offer some resistance when you bend the bristles in your hand, but still soft and consistent (rather than wiry). I hope that helps!
I really enjoyed this video! Thank you!!
I have a fluffy white and ginger cat I want to paint and this is very helpful. Thank you
Awesome! Have you started your painting? I'd love to see if you've posted it somewhere.
Thank you, this is a huge help. This is the most challenging part for me!
No problem! Whiskers can be a beast, especially on cats. They're so long. Glad it helped :)
Fabulous!! Just discovered your most helpful videos. I’m an oil painter of almost 4 years and am getting ready to do a surprise painting of my great grand puppy “Gus” for my grandson. Gus is a precious long haired miniature dachshund with soo much love in his eyes and face. Thank you for providing soo much expertise and love your videos!! Just signed up for your blogs.
Thanks Deb! I hope your painting of Gus goes beautifully. He sounds like a treasure <3
I wish this one had a voice-over. A more in-depth video on painting wrinkles in oils would be really helpful😃
Hey! I finally did a video that has a lot of wrinkles in it. If you're still interested in learning to paint them, skip to the part around 21:50 in this one: ua-cam.com/video/rLLmF0IFeXo/v-deo.htmlsi=B2_Ql6PRrH35XLKl
I've never heard anyone else talking about using translucent paint for the eyes, or done it, but that makes so much more sense. I'm absolutely going to try that next time! 👌😄
Awesome! I'd love to hear how it goes :)
Have you ever used one of those brushes with tips of the bristles chopped out, the "wisp" brushes? I just got some and am having some difficulties with it. Maybe I'm not using it right? ... probably 😂
I have, and to be honest I never got the hang of it either! I imagine the idea with a wisp brush is that the 3 (or 5 or however many) chunks of bristle somehow make it faster to paint a bunch of little hairs. But it just hasn't worked that way for me. Making a bunch of little hairs in the last step of a painting is already pretty fast, and having a special brush for it just made me look at the details too early. IMO it's better to use a big brush for as long as possible, and then just add a few hairs here and there with whatever little brush you have on hand :)
There was a lot of great tips in the video. Thanks! I just got my first oil paint pet portrait and I am a bit lost at painting the fur texture. This will help so much! ❤❤❤
Congratulations!! I hope it does :)
It looks amazing! I wonder is it oil painting? Do you add other thing like water color?
It is oil! To get that washy look, I use a lot of medium. The thinnest and best for a washy effect is mineral spirits, but I like to mix in some heavier oil like linseed or poppyseed to keep the fumes down and make give it some gloss.
Nice painting keep it up👍
Thanks Marc!
Cute❤️
Nice work😊
Wonderful !! What are the colors please ? Thank you🌸🇫🇷
Thank you so much for this video. I’m dyslexic and I struggle to see and draw this shape accurately. This really helped me!!!😊
I'm so glad to hear! It's a really hard shape to wrap your head around haha
Would you consider doing a resin layer? I’d be so afraid of pieces coming off
Totally. I mix in that really thick medium to act like a resin, and an oil-mixable resin would do the same thing. The goal is to really embed the ashes in something that will both preserve and protect, and the more the better. Acrylic painters have more options but there are still lots of good solid goops for us oil painters!
Ahh super cute! And loved watching his eye come to life
Thanks Astrid ^_^
I really liked it but can u make a video on how to make it like tutorial paints colors mentioned plzz dooo ❤

I've got a couple tutorials up now on similar pieces! Anything you're looking for in particular? You could try this one for a 20 minute walkthrough: ua-cam.com/video/PE8kPsAykOY/v-deo.html
Thank you for sharing this. I am going to be painting a memorial of my dog. I have a question: does anything need to be applied as a top coat? I worry about the ash separating from the paint. I typically use acrylics. Do you know if mixing the ash with the acrylic will be okay or should I use oils?
Hey Christine, if you mix the ash into the acrylic so it's coated on all sides, the paint itself should form a solid encasement. Acrylics dry to a kind of plastic sheet, so you're basically embedding the ash within that layer. To help with adhesion, you can sift the ash first to take out big chunks so its finer, and easier for the paint to absorb. Lastly, if you do find that when the painting is finished you have exposed ash (maybe you added some on top, for example), you can absolutely add a sealer, gloss, or varnish!
Such beautiful art!
Incredibly beautiful work!
Love your teaching style and the way you talk to the camera - it’s like we’re right there with you! ☺️
Thank you! I'm glad to hear ^_^
