    Thank you for sharing your painting expertise! Painting animals is so difficult for me! Oh, how I labor trying to paint one!!! But it seems so easy for you! I SO love your doggie painting! And I love that you did not simply duplicate the photo to its exactness, even though it looks very much like it. Photos are often used by many artists only as a source of reference to which they can add their own unique "flavor," and I feel that's what you did here! Wonderful! Thanks again!

      Thank you Adlin. The longer I paint, the more "interpretive" I want to become. If I fuss about with tight detail, I am usually much less satisfied with the outcome!

      Thanks for the input. My family is always in a bit of a discussion as to the attention span of the viewer. I enjoy doing the longer videos, but out of concern that I might bore the socks off of viewers, I speed things up! Personally, I like to listen to artists in great detail as well. The next video will be in real time. I'll be covering how to create the illusion of transparent glass in oil. Let me know if you all have any questions. Nettie Kaye

    thank you for making thisyour video with careful instructions, it's most helpful for a novice like me. I'd like to paint a dog portrait (of an English Spaniel) on a 12x12 canvas, should i include the body or just paint the head shot of the dog. Also, which style & size of brush would you recommend for my case? I'll be using Water mixable oil paints.

    • @NettieKStudio
      @NettieKStudio  7 років тому +1

      If you do a square canvas, just the head is great. A rectangular canvas is better for the entire body.
      As for the brushes, I love the Dick Blick Scholastic White brushes...with the blue handle. They are really inexpensive and hold their shape nicely. I don't like using expensive brushes...as I am not great at taking care of them!
      The brushes I use for hair are the filbert shaped brushes. The larger the brush the softer the effect. If you are looking for every hair, then go with some smaller brushes. Start with the larger brush to lay in the tone and then use the small brushes for a few hairs of detail. Good luck! Send me a pic of your progress! Nettie K

    Just love this. I’ve been wanting to paint my sisters dog (Chinese crested powderpuff) she is white and fluffy. Trying to figure out your colors. Is that Naples yellow on your pallet?

    • @NettieKStudio
      @NettieKStudio  6 років тому

      Thank you Tracy...When I paint a white dog, I will make three puddles of whites. One mixed with a tiny bit of lavender, One with a tiny bit of Naples yellow or Yellow Ochre, and the third puddle is White with either a drop of teal or Viridian. I work the colors back and forth and in different tonal values, (dark, middle, light), to get an interesting, and dimensional white effect. Take a look at my new video on the Bulldog and Boxer Snoozing...part Two. It shows how I work with the variations. Hope that helps!

    Love the way you paint and your instructions, want to try a dog that looks much like this for the first. Was really disappointed when you did the loud music and speed up I would have loved to have been able to watch and listen to you.. I don't understand why you had to do that to your video, would have loved to have learned from all of it. Its been a couple of days and I think you use that same loud music on some of your other videos and only run a few mins. Such a shame you are such a good artist and teacher. I subscribed to you, think a lot more people would if you would consider what I suggested. Newbies like me old and retired and not about to get out love to find a really good artist like you to learn from. Many thanks!

      Thank you Patty. I am glad you are interested in more details. I do get concerned that people have a super short attention span. The actual time it took to complete the dog painting was close to an hour. It is a lot of just fussing with paint...so I speed it up. I am planning to do a new video in real time on the transparency of glass in oil paint soon. I'll make a longer version available to those who would like to study seriously. Thanks so much for your interest. Stay tuned!

    I've never heard of paint that takes months to dry?

    • @NettieKStudio
      @NettieKStudio  8 років тому

      Oil paint will dry to the touch in a week or so, especially in summer. The surface layer dries first, then the paint begins to cure below to the canvas. Depending on the amount of paint, and the color, it can take 6 months before the paint is dry enough to safely put a varnish on without risking cracking.

    • @NettieKStudio
      @NettieKStudio  8 років тому +1

      The reason the nose appears to be off, is because the camera was shooting from an angle. When we are in front of a live audience the artist and camera cannot be directly in front of the canvas. This distorts the image. Make sure when you paint, you are standing nose to nose with your painting. Thanks so much for your comments

    • @pkaspar78

      Yeah, the nose is too big and wrong shape and his left eye is too high but she mentioned that it’s hard to paint from the side

  • @painting55
    @painting55 8 років тому

    The nose is off because the instructor is doing too much talking and not paying attention to her painting. She is generalizing features. Too bad. Very generic dog. Dog lovers enjoy expression on their dog's faces.

    • @NettieKStudio
      @NettieKStudio  7 років тому +1

      This is the conundrum of teaching often. Speech comes from the opposite side of the brain. So...when my students are working, I always encourage silence...In order to talk and paint at the same time, you literally have to switch sides of the brain at rapid succession. It can be exhausting!
      However, when things go askew during a demonstration, it is primarily due to the necessity of standing off to the side in order for everyone to see what is happening.
