I think even if they had gotten them it wouldn’t have made any difference because when the big names were eventually brought in they didn’t do a great job with their booking then.
I loved that era. HhH was injured so he wasn’t there beating everybody, it allowed guys like Kurt and Jericho to get elevated. Austin had his best year in 2001. It was downhill in 2002 when HHh returned.
It DID do wrestlemania numbers. If you look at the 15 WWE PPVs with the most buys, its the only one on the list that isn't a WM. And most of he Mania's on the list happened AFTER Invasion, meaning it used to be like, top 5 all time buyrates.
Failure for sure but it was to be expected. Especially, w/o Sting, Goldberg, NWO, Flair, etc. Most of the top invasion guys were WWE guys in the end. Mainly Austin and Angle.
The invasion failed because #1 they didn't have the big stars #2 they treated the wcw guys and ecw talent as a joke and none threat. If vince was smart he could of waited a bit to get the big names and make 3 ppv with wcw winning one wwe winning another and having wwe and wcw challenge the nwo that has been a threat and secretly recruiting wwe guys with dx heavily with nwo and have stone cold team with the rock and sting, luger against them
It just feels like he wanted to end it relatively quickly as another way to squash them. Looking back, I would have booked the midcard guys they had to be beaten down, bullied, frustrated, and build that up until the top names became available and would show up to save them. They could have played this out for 2-3 years. That said, I don't know what if any commitment they may have had from those guys to actually show up once their Time Warner deals were done.
If it had been Shane O Mac to resurrect Eric Bischoff into Stephanie McMahon pushes ECW with Paul Heyman. Problem is; it was Shane McMahon's touted Shane O Mac could have teased the possibility of the bigger names churning at ANY MOMENT to FUCK UP WWF
With Vince what i heard about him he was not the sort of person to push talent that was not created in house so anyone coming in like the WCW wrestlers it was always going to be a problem....if done well it could have lasted for so long
If I was Tony Khan I would run every major decision by Jim Ross. He's right there. Knows more than damn near anyone else. Let him help you build AEW back to the numbers it used to get.
I did enjoy most of it, i did wish HHH wasn't injured at the time, i wonder whos side he would have been on, they should of never retired the European title even the light heavyweight championship should of been used beter and kept going
@@moorzzy3 Yeah I think Sting's involvement as a sort of wild card anti-hero for both sides could've been the perfect thing to elevate the story. Sad that we'll never know.
If Vince McMahon were able to buy every roster out contract through Time Warner. The build-up of the invasion could have been similar to both Hall & Nash emerging from the crowd and entering the ring invading the WWF. Each following week revealed a big surprise with Eric Bischoff, Ric Flair as allies against Vince McMahon. The following week between Monday and Friday. Every big name from WCW emerged from the crowd and attack every WWF roster; Hogan with NWO, Booker T, Goldberg, lex luger, Sid Vicious, Diamond Dallas Page, Bam Bam Bigelow, and shocking debut of Sting and return of Bret Hart. Return with a Vengeance.
nWo shouldve came in to WWE earlier. they feud with the Undertaker. Undertaker gets buried alive by the nWo. he disappears for a few months. nWo begins taking over. Undertaker returns as the Ministry … destroys the nWo. then after Taker destroys the nWo, he wants to take over the WWF. Vince needs a hero to save WWF… enter STING!!!!!
a year after the invasion angle the katie vick incident happened on monday night raw. that tells you how far in advance the wwe planned on using their newly acquired talent. their should have at least been a two year boom period but wwe misused talents in all the worst ways. in case you forgot here is some of the newly acquired talent: ddp, raven, steiner, bagwell, hogan, hall, nash, flair, o haire, palumbo, rhyno, rvd, boss man, bryan clark, bryan adams, hurricane, tommy dreamer, tajiri, and they just couldn't come up with any good storylines to follow up after 2001?
It failed because as I recall there was no angle.. it was like two weeks and then the split came.. they should have kept WCW on tnt.. and slowly brought them over to WWF… keep the inner feuds going in each channel the the biggest stars will. Sit in the audience and people would be like “wtf” .. it would have been too easy
See I think that's a copout. The nWo storyline started with Scott Hall, who was never a main eventer in the WWF and Kevin Nash, the lowest drawing WWF Champion of all time and then yeah they got Hogan, but they also got 20 midcard geeks who never went any further. It's not about the "star power" it's about what you do with it. They had Booker T, DDP and RVD. Yeah, not Hall, Nash and Hogan, but they could have done something with that. Instead they decided to do something else and it didn't work.
I guess I was 14 at the time. Had they kept the purchase of WCW a secret it might have been cool, but it was just stupid knowing these guys were all under contract to Vince anyway. They could have still formed a faction of ex-WCW guys without faking a lameass invasion angle that made no sense. Nothing to do with the talent themselves (or lack thereof) in my opinion
It was definitely a fail….though I enjoyed it during the time it happened, I couldn’t help but wonder “where’s Sting, Goldberg, NWO, Flair, Bischoff?” I liked the angle but it certainly shoulda been better
It was fail from the standpoint of “who the Fook is Shawn stasiak?” Like we needed Goldberg, sting, DDP, Hogan, outsiders etc…. ECW is really what made it kinda work.
I stopped listening when JR made it more about the lack of names than the nonsensical, horrible booking & burying of all the incoming talent. The waste of DDP was alone was criminal.
It failed. The obvious reasons are WCW mega stars were not brought in. Those from WCW and ECW who were brought in were treated like a Joke with only RVD really doing good being Hardcore champion and being loved by the fans. Most of the big names on the WCW/ECW side were with WWE then defected again like Dudley Boyz, Tazz, William Regal, Stone Cold, Kurt Angle, Christian, Shane/Stephanie, Molly Holly, Ivory, etc… Some of the highlights we did get though was Rock vs Jericho feud, Edge vs Christian feud, Trish Stratus beginning her first of many title reigns, Shane vs Angle at KOTR, Hardy’s vs Dudley’s at Survivor Series. Despite this it doesn’t outweigh how bad the overall angle was. Most of the women’s matches from Invasion to No Mercy were Bra & Panties/Lingerie matches always involving Stacy Kiebler and Torrie Wilson where possible… we didn’t start getting more normal women’s matches until the Six Pack Challenge with Trish, Jaqueline, Lita, Ivory, Molly and Jazz at survivor series onwards. Generally many of the PPV/Matches were just not worth watching…
Do you think the Invasion angle was enjoyable or a failure? Let us know in the comments below!
Obviously we all wanted Nwo Goldberg sting so it always felt a little one sided I still enjoyed it
The invasion angle didn’t go over because Vince would never want to put a wcw guy over a wwe guy
It failed because all of the big stars in WCW weren't part of it. Pretty simple.
That and Vince burring most of the few they have at the time for the sake of WWF>WCW
And, we all knew what the endgame was. Vince would have never had WCW win anything.
I think even if they had gotten them it wouldn’t have made any difference because when the big names were eventually brought in they didn’t do a great job with their booking then.
Vince would never put anything he didn't create, over. Even if it was what was best for business.
CORRECT. END OF STORY.
