Wiring Step-Up Converters for your 12 Volt Oven such as Travel Buddy, Road Chef or Kickass

- In this episode we look at three ways to wire up the Step-Up and never have to disconnect it again.
If you've purchased a Step-Up converter to get better performance out of your 12 Volt Oven, because of the limited input range 11-13V with most Step-Ups, you have to disconnect it when driving.
This will substantially increase the performance of your Travel Buddy, Road Chef or Kickass 12V ovens.

NB There are Step-Up Converters, with a much wider input voltage range, though they are considerably more expensive.

I did approach TB for a second heating element, they unfortunately weren't interested in selling me one. I would love to help those guys crush the competition! They'll have to innovate soon, or they'll be left in the wake of the competition.

Love the channel do you know if you can get a 30 Amp step up to more like 15.5v would be good to run multiple items off it when you want more performance out of them
They seem to be avaliable, though might be economically better off running multiple step ups.
Just watched your video out of interest. Good stuff. However I run the solar in the canopy of my ute independent of the alternator and starting battery, so none of this applies to me. I'm off to watch the previous step up convertor video now!

So the step up converter would make it hotter and cook quicker? Love this stuff. More basic newbie stuff would be awesome. Did electronics at school but I got lost soon after. Blood teaching would have been good. No internet back then.

any chance you can do a comparison with the kick ass oven and the road chef? they used to be the same, but I've been told Kick ass now make their own. like to know if as good as road chef

I bought the low voltage cut-out module. I`ve set it to 12,0v to cut off my stuff. But i dont understand the other settings with the low number. Maybe you can help me with that? Thanks in advance.

I am curious as to what would happen if I ran the Step Up converter whilst the alternator was supplying 14v to the Travel Buddy. Would the step up converter then increase the voltage to 16 or 17 volts and start to cause damage? Great Video too thankyou!
The regulator is designed to output (in this case) about 15v regardless of the input voltage. The specs list a max input voltage of 13v. Though having not tested it, I would assume feeding it more voltage on the input would result in more heat the step-up would generate, you might eventually overload a component or two in the step-up and let the magic smoke out!
The regulator does exactly that, it ensures that the output is 13.8/15volts what ever it is designed for, running off the alternator when running will not increase the output.
Does the 24v version heat up faster would it be worth running a 24v oven with 12-24v converter?
It's a higher wattage unit, I hear it's more powerful, though haven't personally tested it.

Wouldn't the Summerville metal works set up/down 13.8v be the best and easiest option?
9 to 36v in is always made to 13.8v out?
So no extra wiring and for a smart alternator it will keep export to 13.8v regardless of the import.
Back when the video was made, the wide input voltage models weren't commonly available.

Yes the set up life will be reduced from more use... but then again most ware is heating and cooling cycles...
There is the parasitic loss issue that may flatten your battery if the vehicle isn't driven for a while.

Curious why do you need to disconnect the step up converter when driving? Is it because it may overload the converter?
That particular step up is only rated to 13v input.
Ah I see, So if you were running a 12v to 15v(15a/225W) step up converter technically you wouldn't need this?
I wondered the same. You can get a 8v to 30v input step up/down that outputs 13.8 up to 20a. Just wire that in, set and forget. You might loose a little whilst driving because it might clip a slightly higher available voltage. But I think the test videos showed 13.8 was optimal anyway. Cool video none the less. Thanks.

I watched these videos when they first came out, and last week I got a travel buddy. Do you think you would need a stepup if you use a lithium battery?
You'll get less of a benifet using a lithium battery as they don't drop off the voltage as the battery discharges nearly as much as a conventional lead acid. Though you still get a performance boost, especially with the 15V version.

If only TB or one of these mobs would put a small fan in these ovens, the heat up and performance would be far improved - and how much current will a small fan draw in comparison to the draw of the heating element.

I’m electric illiterate so geeez my brain is going mad I’m just curious on how to set up a fridge and turning my cigi socket into a Anderson plug instead and I’m only single battery do I was wondering how to hard wire up a solar panel to my single battery 🤯🥵 love your videos tho

An anderson plug needs to be wired to the battery through its own fuse/circuit breaker. Making an adapter for the gig lighter may damage the wiring in the car.
You need to watch the current draw from cig lighter sockets, if you're only using it for low current devices
Wat a waste. Just get a variable input step up.
At the time this video was put together, all of the commonly available step ups had a limited voltage input range, so you had to work around the limitations.
