  • A lot of openers become weird when you try to really optimize them, but one stands out to me as particularly silly!

    I know this video is a bit subjective, so what is the most ridiculous opener in your opinion? It could be wild in terms of planning, or extremely complex to perform! I just thought this paladin one was ridiculous to the point of being funny so I wanted to share it! ^^

      A ridiculous variation opener currently in-game is the 29s WAR pre-pull opener. 30s countdown, pop IR at 29s, then wait until pull start. Hit Primal Rend as first GCD. The entire purpose of the pull is to gain a Primal Rend use over the course of the fight based on the kill time expected, forgoing raid buff alignment entirely.

      @@Jerails Wow that is extremely specific! I am guessing that whether this is worth it is also dependent on whether there is either some downtime throughout the fight that somehow pushes Inner Release back to fit with Raid buffs, or that this specific displacement doesn't result in losing an inner release throughout the fight anyway! That is a lot to think about!

      That is an interesting point! "since rdps means I don't get credit for putting my burst in the raid buffs anyway, why bother?"
      What a strange situation! I didn't even think of that since I couldn't imagine doing that myself!

      My GNB Opener. I dont Savage, yet. But what I have in a funny lil notepad on my screen is a custom opener that means I do one full standard rot, a aoe rot, then pop No Mercy, Double Down, Bloodfest, Gnashing Fang Combo with my 2 gap closers, Lughtning Shot, finishing eith 2 uses of the quick combo that is literally the one that ends with hypervelocity.
      And that is how you fuck your raid buffs and be a dumb MT, like me XD
      (Its not complex or anything, just sillly, so I thought to drop it here anyway)

      That is certainly a unique opener 😊 the good news are that gunbreaker does not need a long pull timer or anything to do their openers, so you could perfect this in regular content 😊

      This opener predates the rather recent rework of the paladin job, and so, it is no longer a rotation anyone uses! However, the reason was the following:
      You want to apply a fight or flight boosted goring blade. This takes around 7 seconds. You want specifically a downtime after requiescat burst (which used to be used separately from fight or flight, as fight or flight *used to* only boost physical damage)
      The reason for that is that requiescat finishes with applying a damage over time effect similar to goring blade, that didn't stack. So having an intentional break of about 20 seconds between end of requiescat and start of fight or flight was preferable.
      Thus, if you cast fight or flight 18 seconds before fighting starts (as you only want the 7 seconds to use goring blade), fight or flight can start its cooldown sooner, and be ready when you need it.
      The reason you want requiescat 7 seconds into the fight is because raid buffs tend to come out there and your magic spells are the strongest part of your rotation.

      Do you think the paladin was better before or after the rework?

      I feel that the rework made the job both more flexible and easier to play. I also enjoy playing the job far more now, so I think the new version is better 😊

      Can't forget stormblood MCH was up there with SMN as ome of the hardest classes to master before it got simplified (but soo much better) in SHB and than SMN becoming so simple in Endwalker.

    While MCH has a pretty simple opener(Reassemble + Air Anchor), I will never forget running Alexander with members of my FC and one of them going "is that a bazooka??"

      Honestly, Machinist has a somewhat complex optimized rotation, because when perfectly optimizing, you may space out Drill, Air Anchor and Chainsaw in a specific way because it makes them line up correctly for your next wildfire window 2 minutes into the fight and so on! So certainly, Machinist can become very complex if you wish it to be - but don't feel like you have to do this super optimization, in most content, just using these big attacks first tend to be just fine!
      Also fun fact! Did you notice that Drill, Bioblaster, Air Anchor and Chainsaw all use the same multi cannon tool to shoot from? Just from different angles! :D

      ​@@CaetsuChaijiCh It is the future now, our opener involves holding off on popping our damage CDs until just before we get sword oath, do the full requiescat, goring blade, and fit all the atonements in after the fact

    Sge's pneuma opener is pretty wild, use eukrasia prepull and do -2 pneuma, then dot. Using a 2min massive healing cd just to save 1s is wild af

      If you think about it most raids open with a raid wide, both healers will have massive amounts of resources at this point anyway so why not 🤷🏻‍♂️

    For anyone stumbling on this, since 6.3 they've gotten rid of having to pop FoF 18 seconds before pull. As always, it's a good idea to check out resources every once in a while to make sure you're up to date.

      Why did ppl do this? I don't completely understand the timing with raid buffs explanation... Why wouldn't they simply place it further in the rotation so it's active during them?

      This is because before the paladin rework, fight or flight only affected physical damage.
      Requiescat enabled the magic burst which at the time was 4 holy spirits, confiteor and the three blades (8 gcds).
      The magic burst did better damage than most physical attacks, but you really wanted to apply goring blade with fight or flight up if you could.
      Due to this design, paladin had a looping rotation of physical burst with fof (including a goring blade combo finish, as goring blade was an alternative to royal authority that applied a dot. Then royal authority, and a number of atonements, and then another goring blade just before fof runs out)
      Then a magic burst with requiescat. The final blade actually applied a slightly superior version of goring blade also.
      And then a downtime sequence of royal authority combo and a number of atonements and repeat.
      The intent of waiting 18 seconds of fof in this way was such that you could start your rotation so that you got the peak of your sustained dps during raid buffs, without it affecting your looping rotation.
      I hope this makes sense 😅

    Blue mage opener is the most ridiculous imo xD!
    It involves using a spell that gives you 50% more dmg for the next 15 seconds, during which you'll be " giving it your all", after that you can't use any spells or abilities for the next 15 secs, so it's practically a 15 seconds burst followed by a 15 seconds stand around and do nothing (except occasional dodging). It's not a pre-pull wait, it's a during fight wait, compared to others!

      @@starstreamheartlocke652 It's usually used at the end as well, when you buff up and prepare to use final sting for the kill (cause a blue mage group don't need to get bosses to 0 hp the traditional way, they get it to "can be killed with final sting" hp and then double KOs it).
      Aside from that it depends on the fight, the dmg you can get from it is amazing and worth it, but you gotta plan where to use it so that the standing around after wont kill you.

      @@millamiqote8827 This is correct. Generally, DPS Blue mages want to use Moon Flute to align with other 2 minute cooldowns, a bit like the classic 2 minute burst windows for normal jobs. For tanks, this is highly unlikely, since being unable to do anything for 15 seconds is brutal. The can also be the case for healers, but usually, at least one of the healers can get away with using Moon Flute too!
      Overall, it is complicated, as BLU tends to be, it depends on the situation!

    Heavensward WAR was absolute aids:
    45s before the pull, you would infuriate to get 5 Abandon stacks
    15s before the pull, you would refresh it with Raw Intuition or Vengeance
    All so you could get 3 Fell Cleaves into Berserk + raid buffs

    one time, i was practicing a gnb opener in bozja and clicked on the wrong hotbar; i gap closed and immediately hit superbolide followed by tank lb
    my party was two zones away but they knew exactly what just happened

    For p3s, warriors had an opener where they used Inner Release at -29 seconds prepull to pull with primal rend. And then there was another one that included doing Overpower -> Mythril Tempest because it gave you your damage buff in 2 gcds instead of 3. I think that also had you use Inner Release immediately before that or something. Cursed openers are the best.

      Thank you for the extra detail! Others mentioned this cursed primal rend opener and I have heard of overpower mythril tempest openers but never heard of cases where people would use them specifically!

      That is understandable! As I recall, it was bad enough that guides recommended an alternative shorter opener for doing pulls repeatedly in Savage Progress, and furthermore it was figured out that Slow PLD (2.50 GCD) could do better without the looooong pull timer! ^^

    My pick for the most wild opener is Dragoon in DSR specifically
    They start with an OGCD instead of a GCD, if you dont jump before your first GCD getting jump and mirage dive off before Thordan leaves is very hard otherwise. And if you dont get second mirage dive your rotation is very ruined for the rest of the encounter

    Monk's rotation is most optimized rotation is based on lag, or how many frames they get. Can do double lunar or double solar depending on when they want to align buffs by matters less than a second

      Oh yes! Monk is definitely up there in terms of difficult openers! As far as I know, there are even 4 popular openers depending on what you need, which is far more than what most other jobs have!

    Tanks having to activate their tank stance seems to be the hardest one. Can't counter the number of times they've forgotten to do it

    I realized this was an old video right when you said paladin. I used to do this opener and just hate the world for it.
    Now it's 100% Dancer for the 45s opener

      It is fortunate that the 45s Dancer Opener is such a miniscule Damage gain over the 15s opener that it is almost rude to demand it outside of like... a Parsing run ^^ (The gain being around 36 potency in total!)

    Drk opener into their 3 button spam is pain.
    -4sec blood wep
    -3sec TBN if you know the boss will pop it
    -2sec flask
    -0.5sec provoke
    And then follow it up with 22 button presses in 8.5 GCDs

    I wanna say the Ultima Weapon Gigapad plume opener for Ninja is the most ridiculous I've seen.
    Basically you save your oGCDs for the Garuda plumes mechanic.
    The label for the meme opener is "Guaranteed to make your static hate you and blacklisted from your Data Center's Ultimate PFs"

    This is why I play 14 casually and don't optimize anymore. Openers like this are really dumb and not fun. Also personally I just don't like raid buffs

      I understand a lot of players also feel the excitement of lining up all the raid buffs and such has sort of disappeared because it happens almost automatically now

    it's not true anymore but back when you have to generate your Greased Lightning stacks, Shadowbringer monk had to litteraly be perfect on server tick to have a good opener with Anatman to get 1 Greased Lightning stack 0.1 sec after pressing the button , that was just impossible without a tool
    Or even the tornadokick rotation at the end of SB was wild, you litteraly throw your Greased Lightning stack in the opener

      30sec is a bit of an overshoot, you start standard at 16sec so a 16-18sec timer is good enough for a DNC. (At least what I am personally comfortable with ofc)

      @@arratoi how? When standard step is 25 second cool down? Idk I’m not a huge savage player but someone in my fc is and she prefers 30 seconds so I can used SS once pre pull

      @@Tac-oBella Standard Step's cooldown is 30 seconds, however, when you start it, you have 15 seconds before you have to finish it. So the opener when optimized has you do Standard Step -> the 2 steps, and then wait until the very last moment before it ends, such that you start the battle with only 15 seconds of cooldown on Standard Step 🙂
      For this reason, you don't need more than about 18 seconds to perform this consistently, however, a lot of players like the full 30 seconds so they don't have to sit ready to press the button at a moments notice at all times.
      Additionally, while you could feasibly apply your standard finish once before the pulltimer to get a damage bonus for the Standard Finish itself, I don't know how much this would matter over the course of a battle, and it would add an extra 30 seconds of wait between each try, so people tend to not do this 🙂I hope this explains it Gabriella!

    DNC is kinda funny - 15.5 seconds you start standard step, then do the 2 steps and... wait for the remaining 10 seconds. Then at 0.5 seconds pre-pull you can finish, as the attack takes time to propagate across the arena to the boss.

    Yeah, for developers who wanted to build so much around a 2min burst window...they really messed up when to be optimal a job has to use an ability, stand around for 18 seconds, then start the fight just to make sure they get the most benefit, but you know....'Balance' and all that.

Still baffles me how they define 'balance' without thinking how players don't care about balance so much as being optimal.       Yeah, it's awkward because players will choose the most degenerate absurd rotation imaginable, if it is the optimal one. The danger there is that the developers can choose to put guard rails on everything and make every rotation obvious and simple and boring. Or they can let it be 🤔 and given the current path we are going down, I am certainly seeing some guard rails in the distance! 😕

Seen it in prior expansions, and I'm more than certain by now they are very aware of how the current meta is affecting specific jobs when it comes to endgame content. Reminds me of when they made mch/brd turret jobs only to realize that was a huge mistake based on how the player base was avoiding using certain aspects to perform mechanics or avoid the jobs entirely. Or when it came to Drk when first added with the Dark Arts train and being far more Magic defensive meaning physical damage fights they were not desired at all.
      Sadly though, no matter how hard they try, the player base will always find the meta or "optimal rotation" to work in a specific way that fits that meta. At least for now we know they won't be doing any major battle changes until 7.0.

      Yeah that IR warrior opener sounds like a lot of thinking and consideration just for a single primal rend, since the opener will also make IR miss raid cooldowns! I wonder how many fights this particular opener is worth it on!
      For the BLM Transmute opener, I am guessing it might be related to the... I think it is called the "Infinite Paradox" rotation or something like that? I suppose the biggest benefit of it would be that it makes you quite mobile? But it is definitely complicated, and cursed! ^^

    Summoners used to have a 30s preopener in SB, you also could use aetherflow on both summoner and sch out of battle so you BET your ass youre waiting in that cooldown between every pull.
    Oh and dont you even fucking dare going into an instance astro if you havent pre drawn a spread balance. You also had to draw 4 cards in the astro opener and also act fast with what you got.
    Samurai at one point had like 6 different openers based on the sks tier Iirc. Didnt play it much.
    Sb was wild.

    Remember when aetherflow was usable outside of combat so smn had to wait a whole minutes between pulls to do their opener. Also the pet swap opener, you used all ifrit ability before pull at very specific times so when you swapped to Garuda you had less pet managing to do. Fun times

      As long as raid buffs are up, you would want to weave fan dances though ^^
      But Dancer has its own extra silly opener, where it uses Standard Finish 45 seconds in advance so they get the buff for the very first GCD xD
      It just feels a bit less absurd than sitting with something like Fight or Flight just ticking down!

      @imtired927 oh yeah you should always space out the fan dances so only one fan dance per gcd. This is because the internal cooldown on fan dance causes it to clip your gcd if you try to double fan dance 1. There's also the case that tillana and standard/technical finish only have a GCD of 1.5 so theres only space for a single ogcd after those 😊
      It should be fine to weave fan dance 1 and 3 in the same window, but not two fan dance 1 or two fan dance 2, or one of each, as their internal cooldown causes problems! 😊

    I know this videos kinda old now but I still think some of the non-standard blm openers are wild-- one of the examples guides give you is one that uses transpose twice that you can only use if your mana regen ticks line up favourably lmfao

      I can understand the frustration! But in fairness, Most of these silly tricks and openers are made up by the players trying to over optimize things! The only way SE could prevent this from happening would be to make it so the vast majority of actions you have aren't usable at all out of combat, which I think a lot of people would find worse 😅
      The good news are that you don't need to do this stuff in most content, and in the case of Paladin, it is not too big of a loss to skip the "Cast fight or flight and then stand there for 18 seconds" part of the opener 😊

If you didn't wait, you would have to do the mechanics of (this might be wrong, it's been a long time) the opposite route of what you chose. The right side had a type of rot that would be easy death to most parties, and left side was a cakewalk in comparison. Easier to just wait out the enrage to start than to actually use brain

As for the enrage part - it would still kill you easypeasy, but it was forestalled until your healers were out of mana and couldn't keep up with the damage leading to a second enrage timer of sorts... Much like the dragon in Labrynth of the ancients (1st boss with skeles etc) had to be nerfed due to power creep as killing it before adds were dead and optimaly placed to be killed would wipe groups cause of mass damage even with heals going.

    As cool as PLD melee animation is, I hate the REQ phase Holy Light spam. Should have made that one button ogcd during REQ buff while continuing your melee combo until you get to Blade combo.

      Yeah I can see how the Holy Spirit animation is incredibly dull, especially seeing it four times in a row! I guess an alternative solution would be to shine up the character animation for the spell a bit? I think the dull animation is a bit of a carry over from the fact that it used to have a cast time even in Requiescat - Not that I believe that makes it much better, but the start up animation for the cast does make the overall spell look a lot better in my opinion! :-)

    blue mage flute optimal opener is the best weird opener after vomiting the best cds you carefully choose in a way that youd be able to do the maximum amount of damage your ping allows you to do during flute window and then just standing there hitting the guy with the rod until the debuff drops.

      Coordinated openers with big lead ups like these are mostly expected to be used specifically in Extremes, Savage and Ultimate content where people use Pull timers and such 🙂
      The purpose of an opener is to maximize the damage you can do, and doing so means you perform better. And I imagine a large amount of players both enjoy that kind of growth, and also other players appreciate the effort 😊
      But overall doing a PERFECT opener and such is not mandatory or super important outside of really hard content, so you could just vibe as you say 😅😊
      To put a more specific example, the point of openers is to make it so if you have a buff that makes you do 10% more damage for 15 seconds, then you put all your best attacks exactly in that 15 second window, and not some other place, because it means you will do way more damage with those attacks at that specific time! 😁

    I mean yeah you can blame the developers why they design 2 min buff window
    We PLD have to do this just to get buffed version of goring blade.
    While DRK is just random Bs go, GNB.... Not gonna talk how complicated current GNB are.

      Fortunately for the most part these openers with crazy long start ups only really happen in the hardest content with coordination!
      But even when doing less hardcore content, there can still be something fun in mastering your job! So if you are interested in that, I do have guides for all jobs on my channel that include everything from starting at level 1 to how to play at level 90 ^^

      @@CaetsuChaijiCh I'll have a look. I mean when I play paladin I open with fight or flight sure but go into my standard attack opening with goring blade.
      And I never knew people waited with astro! I start with the circle, forgot the name, draw and then spam my one attack with my dot and card when it's available. Then set up my arcana ready to use. Didn't know people just draw and waited.

      @@galacticmoonwolf8462 When playing paladin outside of savage raids, you typically just go into the fight or flight as you described - this is also what I showcase in my high level paladin guide in detail.
      Astrologians typically draw their card as soon as they get out of the cutscene or loading screen so that the cooldown is started. In savage, you would make sure that the cooldown finishes before pull begins, but outside of this, you just go whenever and the Astrologian has pulled their card as quickly as they can to get the cooldown rolling as quickly as possible. To me it sounds like you have the right idea, just remember that these kinds of openers with a lot of waiting are considered overkill in content that aren't like Ultimates, Savage or extremes! ^^

      It is incredible how specific and detailed BLM openers can get, not to mention how long they tend to be planned out!
      I have seen 3 minute long boss specific BLM lines that are absurd in its own right, not to mention the silly infinite paradox one! I talk about both in some capacity in my longer video on the subject if you are interested 🙂

      Well, the ninja opener is a bit wild in terms of key presses, but it isn't ridiculous on account of being exactly what you'd think it would be, while the ones I listed are somewhat counter intuitive! 😊 At least in my opinion!

      If you mean the robe I am wearing, then the particular one in the video is the Level 74 Healer chest piece "Pixie Cotton Robe of Healing", although you may want to include the matching armguards "Atrociraptorskin Armguards of Healing" for the same level. They are both dyed Cherry Pink 😊
      There are also Mage Caster and Ranged Physical variants of the same top and armguards at level 68, with the caster one being "Twinsilk Coat of Casting" combined with "Gazelleskin Armguards of Casting".
      The Ranged Physical ones are "Twinsilk Robe of Aiming" and "Gazelleskin Armguards of Aiming"

      This video is from before the Paladin Rework.
      Before the rework, Requiescat boosted your next 5 spells, and Confiteor specifically consumed all remaining stacks of Requiescat, which meant you should use Holy Spirit 4 times, and then Confiteor

      It's a lot simpler at least. You have no pre pull timer needed really, and the rotation is very intuitive. I made a guide for level 90 paladins that is updated to the current version if you are interested, it includes the opener and everything you need to understand it! 😁

    I dont really care to optimize every opener perfect everytime. I just have fun and play the game. to much stress going for perfection constantly . I get whatever the current end game content is you have to be perfect but the rest of the game not so much. I mean at least I haven't had any issues really lol

      Outside of extreme and savage content, you probably don't need an effective opener, primarily since there isn't a strict time limit on each attempt (like enrage timers). Ultimates are really where perfection can sometimes be required. But yeah if you are mainly focusing on more casual content, then optimized openers are more for the fun of it for those that like it 😊

    Why activate a buff just to wait out the timer? Correct me if i'm wrong, just seems like a massive waste to me. (I'm new)

      That is a perfectly valid question! And in fact, EXACTLY why it is a ridiculous opener! Let me explain - first by explaining the rotation of the paladin:
      The paladin rotation at max level, in broad strokes, involves using physical attacks during the effect of Fight or Flight for 25 seconds. The most powerful attack in that sequence is Goring Blade, a damage over time effect that lasts 21 seconds, and if applied with Fight or Flight active, will do 25% more damage for its full duration. Hence, you apply it at the start and end of the buff.
      Afterwards, you use Requiescat, which initiates the "magic burst" part of the rotation, which lasts around 20 seconds, and ends with applying a magical version of the Goring Blade debuff (the same effect, so you cant have both). Then for about 15 seconds you do the physical rotation again, just with no buff because Fight or Flight has a 60 second cooldown - this is called the downtime phase. Once Fight or Flight readies again, you start over.
      THIS WEIRD OPENER, starts by casting Fight or Flight and just waiting for 18 seconds, such that you finish by applying Goring Blade (the best part of the Fight or Flight buff) and immediately jumping into the Magic Burst (Which is the more powerful part of the paladin rotation). And because you waited 18 seconds, what follows after the magic burst is 15 seconds of downtime, and then you can go back into Fight or Flight as normal. The particular reason why it is so important to get into the magic burst right then and there is because raid teams tend to use damage boosting raid buffs about 7 seconds into the fight (meaning right around when you apply Goring Blade and then go into the magic burst)
      So there is logic to the opener doing this, it just looks ridiculous, and feels ridiculous too! I hope this makes sense, otherwise you are of course welcome to ask any follow up questions! 😊

      @@slikkvic7611 Well, in hard content at max level, it is quite common to use a pull timer, which means there is a count down before the battle begins effectively. So if there is, say, 30 seconds countdown before the fight begins, you simply use Fight or Flight when the timer says 18 to prepare yourself to do the most damage you can when the timer says 0.
      Hypothetically you could do whatever you want when you wait for the pull timer to count down, as long as it doesn't involve hitting the boss or pulling it 😊 In MOST content, this kind of ridiculous start up to a fight is completely unneccessary and it is only used in extremes, savage and ultimate. Depending on how new you are to the game you may recognize some of these, but overall it means in regularly accessible content, you will not see this preemptive cast of Fight or Flight at all 😅

      @@slikkvic7611 I should clarify that I mainly was thinking of level 90 Extremes, but I could imagine it is not entirely unheard of to see pulltimers and things like that in level 50 extremes 😊 Typically pulltimers are only really used in content where you use the party finder (not to be confused with the Duty finder that automatically matches you with people)

    Damn I miss old PLD, in the period just before having to do the 18 sec pre pull for optimal damage, when both your physical and magic phases felt intentional and powerful, with some mutual DoT management built in. It felt like the perfect amount of complexity for a tank job to have for its dps rotation, not just a hell of a lot of stuff to press on cooldown every minute and then back to 123 filler like now and with GNB/DRK.
    I feel like the only reason PLD suffered in EW was the 2 minute meta, given that it was more sustained constant damage than burst based like every other job except BLM. Felt like a perfect expansion on how it played in ShB, but now it’s on the list of once great jobs I’ve all but dropped, right below SMN.

      But paladin isn't 123 spam ever... what are you talking about haha. During periods of no cooldowns available, PLD has to do 1234445 with atonement and holy spirit, and using that holy spirit optimally (IE saving for when you know you will be out of range for a GCD) can change the order significantly. You can even go 1234441253. Sometimes even 1234512443. PLD is way more interesting than other tanks in downtime. There's more nuance now with going into burst windows making sure that you have a holy spirit ready +2 atonements so that you don't use fast blade or riot blade in FoF.
