hands down the best reviewer of cars for potential buyers. This reviewer actually compares all the possible options and equipments, which is so confusing in modern cars givens so many choices for engine, exhaust, suspension, wheels, seats etc.
This is the best all-round review I have seen. I'm commenting here in the hope that the UA-cam algorithm ensures that this is featured more highly in the UK - as there were simply no reviews in the UK that came anywhere near as close as the quality of this one. You're accurate, measured and informative, with some seriously impressive in-depth knowledge, and your language and commentary is outstanding. I may be biased because I actually do own a 2017 718 Boxster S (also in white), but seriously your review is balanced, and extremely fair. I have subscribed.
This is the best car review I have ever seen. The 718 Boxster is a real masterpiece just like every other Porsche. I literally love everything on it and I can't wait to get mine. It should arrive in September. I put the deposit for it the very next day after watching this review. Thank you Thomas!
Autogefühl - Hello Thomas! This is just to let you know that I just traded in my beloved 718 Boxster for a Carrera 4S. I had a great time driving my 718 for 2.5 years but I decided to upgrade. 911 is absolutely the best sports car ever made and now I can’t describe how happy I am. I wish I can take it with me to my bedroom every night, ha-ha. If you made a UA-cam video of 2017 or later Carrera 911 4S I would love to watch it.
Hello Thomas, I wanted to let you know that my built to order 718 Boxster arrived to a dealer yesterday and I picked it up this morning. I can't tell you how happy I am. This car is a real masterpiece and more likely I will sleep in my garage tonight because I can't take it with me in my bedroom, ha-ha. Thanks for the good wishes.
I am going to also say an excellent review. I’m sure I’ve watched every Boxster review on UA-cam and I have to say this is the most thorough, and balanced review that I have watched. My appreciation to Autogefuhl!
I rarely subscribe to channels these days but after seeing the base review (miami blue) and this one, I'm subscribing. Great work, thanks for walking through the ordinary parts of each car in a measured fashion
Another full review already! It's amazing how active this channel is! You guys put every other car site and magazine to shame! :) And combined with Thomas' reporter skills and charisma, it's a winning combination! I actually really like the rear, and it doesn't sound bad I think! Great job!
+Autogefühl One of the most comprehensive reviews I have ever seen. Would have been interesting to do a direct comparison of the Boxster GTS and the new 718 S model. Clearly the torque is much greater, but the difference in sound and character cannot be overstated based on what you can hear in this video. It's a night and day difference. I have a Cayman GTS manual and the sound above 4500 RPM is completely intoxicating. Much smoother also. Someone who never heard the NA flat six with sport exhaust probably would never care, but Porsche really has taken the soul out of these cars, a big part of what has made them so extraordinary. At least they kept the flat 6 in the new 991.2 turbos and the sound seems to be far better -- couldn't they have found a way to do that in these cars? For people considering this car, my suggestion is to compare it to a late model used Boxster pr Cayman 981 with the 6 cylinder before buying.
This is a really amazing review. I'm gonna have to watch this more than once : D. Super in depth and super helpful if you're in the market for a new 718. Thanks a lot!
Thanks so much, Thomas! I've been really looking forward to this video. This was one of the best reviews I have ever seen on this channel (which is generally full of great reviews). Really loved the additional info and context you have provided on the model's history, the motor etc - really insightful. The Boxster in my opinion is one of the best and probably most underrated sports cars. Therefore, I'm glad you liked the car.
I have to say you are the best person to evaluate a car. I will buy a 718 because I want one plus but your honest no nonsense review of this car really is helpful. Your knowledge and expertise is really appreciated!
Hi again, I am torn between the S and the 2.0. I will get the sound package but will never be on a track and it will be my daily driver. Some reviews say from a standing stop there is turbo lag in the 2.0 whereas the S has a lot of go. For USD $10k or so is the S worth it along with lower gas mileage? Thanks.
Awesome review! This is the first time I've watched yours, and I love how you pick out the details of the car. Very helpful stuff. Keep up with the great work :)
I recently found this channel, and I’m very impressed with the reviews. I am a current owner of a WRX with twin turbo, and I can say with certainty that this does not sound like a Subaru. I have driven a 2010 GT3 and was blown away by the intoxicating sound of the flat 6, so I understand the disappointment with the loss of the exhaust note. I am a previous owner of a 1973 914 with the 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder engine. The 914 weighed approximately 2000 pounds and the engine produced only 95 hp. I can truly say that the mid engine, low weight, relatively low hp Porsche, was a blast to drive (former owner of a Boss 302 Mustang). Turbo 4 cylinder engines are here to stay for various reasons (performance and emissions) and whether they reduce the number of sales of the 718, is yet to be seen...thank you for these great review.
Dear Joseph, if Porsche is happy with the sound of the engine, why would they bother to install two speakers (one behind each seat) just to play electronically "enhanced" engine sounds (I couldn't find out if they are recorded or amplified). Why would Porsche add weight to a sports car just to cheat the sound you hear in the cabin? Is this in accordance with their heritage? Why you can't get this information in any UA-cam review?? Is Porsche paying the reviewers not to disclose this?
I need to take a ride to the dealership to see these speakers...if Porsche were really concerned with the sound they would have kept the flat 6...the increased horsepower and performance is long overdue...we will see what the sales numbers are for the 718.
I'll wait to test drive one before ordering, but based on your review I'm confident this will be my 5th Boxster S.... and first 718. I cannot imagine needing more from a car. The Boxster S really is almost perfect if you don't need 4 seats.
Autogefühl I do not understand how anyone could ever buy any Porsche without the full leather interior. That just add so much special feeling to the interior, also with the accented stitching. I really like alcantara but unless it's a GTS you can't combine the alcantara seats and leather dashboard. Edit: I'm an idiot, you can, but it's a individual option.
Oh, thats the reasoning behind it. I can respect that, but personally I'd still go full leather if i had to choose again. As long as there isnt a equally good option without leather im not going to miss out on it. Not to start about resale value...
Sometimes, Thomas, you are just a very lucky man!! I think the new 718 boxster looks great, I now the changes are small, but they add up to a very refined looking sportscar. Great review as always.
Phenomenal review Thomas ! Appreciate your perspective on the redesigned turbocharged engine vs the naturally aspirated predecessor. I'm a current Porsche owner ( 2015 Cayman GTS + 2016 Porsche Macan S ) , and I am passionate about the brand. My daily commute to work in these vehicles is the highlight of my day. Looking forward to the next Porsche review. Hopefully the new 911 !
Seems like a nice car to have if you're looking for a second car and live in a country that has a climate to actually allow you to drive this. As for the sound, I liked the 2.5 because of the lower sound, the 2 definitely improved with the exhaust button on, though I imagine the boxter S sounding even better with that same option enabled. again, great video!
thumbs up also for the extended autobahn ride with the 7series! exhaust sound of the boxter S is a little deeper and more rumbling, but if you activate the exhaust button of the normal boxter it comes very close.! it's a shame that de S doesn't have the exhaust button, but the sound is already very great ! Cheers to the autogefühl crew !
Having driven both 718 S 's (with and without sport exhaust), I actually prefer the standard exhaust. The reason is that, although when PSE is on, yes it is a little louder at high rpms, it is also more quiet than the standard exhaust at lower rpms. You still get the gargles and pops without PSE. I simply found standard exhaust to be the more pleasing overall driving experience. I make a similar analogy to the standard suspension versus PASM. With PASM, when switched off, the suspension is softer than standard, and when on, it's harder. PASM equipped cars miss entirely the perfect, to my sense, standard suspension. Waiting delivery on my Boxster S, standard suspension and exhaust.
A lot of purists will dislike what I'm about to say.... I think the new Boxer 4 with turbocharging is the best engine for this car. The 718 has a better weight distribution, power comes on very low in rpms, shifting the transmission is reduced and you have more space in the rear trunk. I doubt the fuel economy will be any different in the real world. The exhaust sound is very good and Porsche has tuned it well. Being a best seller, I think the 718 will have excellent reliability and be a classic 20 years from now.
+gbriank1 I totally agree. It's a give and take with turbocharging. Like Thomas says in the review, with NA engines you generally have to wait until the engine is revved up pretty high to get the full power delivery. And anyone who's driven a BRZ/FR-S can attest that NA engines can have torque dips that 'feel' a bit like turbo lag. Sounds like this engine is super responsive.
+Mike Doolittle go to a dealer and drive a 981 there is no issues with power and its way more fun to keep it revving up high blasting through the gears on full 6 cylinder song!
+Mike Doolittle Yes i took a 718S Boxter out last weekend when mine was in for a service. Acceleration didn't feel significantly faster, but then again they are both blisteringly fast. I think you would only really notice in a drag race. Handling didn't feel as good as mine, but my car is a Cayman S which are known to bee sharper than a Boxter S, Mine also has PDK, torque vectoring, PASM and adaptive steering. The Boxter only had pdk so it was an unfair comparison. I would say it was pretty close but nothing groundbreakingly different, to be honest they feel pretty similar to drive although the pasm is much better over bumps in normal road than conventional suspension. Its very hard to make a car that is pretty much perfect much better when it comes to the handling both are superb to drive and i think anyone would be very happy with either. The 718 did feel a little cheaper than my car i really didn't like the dash vents, but then it didn't have all the options and leather bits like mine so its not quite a like for like comparison, little things like manual seats was a level i didn't realize Porsche could drop down to! Overall it was no better or worse to drive than my 981 it just didn't evoke the same emotional connection as my 981 and that was 100% due to the sound and way the power was delivered, it was fast it just wasn't an event like it is in the 6 cylinder cars.
An excellent review Thomas. Most of the commenters on all of the 718 Boxster reviews have negative comments on the exhaust note, but until you hear it with your own ears in the 718 Boxster S with optional Sport Exhaust, you have not heard the best there is for the 718 platform. It is too bad that Thomas didn't have the S with the Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust for this review. For a fair comparison, I went to a dealer and drove a 2016 Boxster GTS and a new 718 S with Sport Exhaust, back to back. The 718 with Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust delivers that wonderful torque instantaneously at all times, has superb handling, and a decent throaty sounding exhaust note with somewhat less crackling than the GTS on downshifts. It's not equivalent sounding to the GTS by any means, but not anywhere near as horribly sounding as the official Porsche video on the 718's which was poorly mic'd for exhaust note...they do not sound at all like a Subaru with a "tinny" exhaust pipe. That was a disservice to the car and to Porsche who have done quite a respectable job on the new 718.
"It is too bad that Thomas didn't have the S with the Sport Chrono and Sport Exhaust for this review." -> see racetrack part! Plus, I had the non-s version with Sport Exhaust and Sport Chrono package
Thanks so much for testing a manual again. Great review. I had a chance to drive one a month ago with the DSG, superb. Hope I can one day drive the manual. For a little more fun.
Great detail review !!! Thank you! Just a question, would you recommend to go for 718 Boxster S or Boxster? Some says the new Boxster is good value compare to Boxster S? What do you think about that? Thx!
the S is overpriced indeed comparing to the normal version. The Boxster / Cayman is a car that you can very very well buy in the basis spec and just add some features you really appreciated
+Autogefühl Thomas, give me an honest opinion, is it worth buying, would you change a 2015 CGTS for the all new Cayman S (718), what are your thoughts....
Great review thanks. As a owner of a 2015 Cayman S it's quite an extraordinary car to have. The driving dynamics of the car is superb. I cannot wait to see the 718 Cayman S version.
Thomas, great review. Best I have seen so far. BTW, your English is excellent. I am envious! I have a GT3RS, and a 2012 Boxster S and have put my name on the list for 718 Cayman S with PDK. I still think about the Boxster in the summer, but love the look of the Cayman. All good choices. Cheers. Vielen Danke.
Thanks for the great review Thomas. One question: how tall are you and was the distance to steering wheel and pedals comfortable for you? Keep up the good work!
+Deniz Ultanur basically yes I was quite surprised. And better than in the F-TYPE for example. Still, if you want a _really_ comfortable convertible, you should go for mid-size convertibles (Audi A3/ A5, Mercedes C-Class, BWM 4-Series) or Grand GTs (Mercedes SL...)
Best thorough reviews of Euro cars in the internet. Thanks! How is the interior room for someone 189cm? Does the GT wheel help a bit? Maybe the Alcantara GT wheel? ;)
Great, impartial, honest review once again Thomas. Really appreciate it. I'm interested in knowing if the manual gear change is heavy? I had a manual BMW 3-Series and was v disappointed as it was so stiff and so heavy that I went back to automatic. Can you perhaps draw a comparison?
Fun review, Thomas. Thanks! Big Porsche fan here. I love that plain Jane steering wheel! And a stick shift. Rear end styling is not my favourite - same with the coupé. Portugal looks lovely too.
As much this is the best analysis of the new porsche 718 I've seen. Congratulations on your analysis really sample all aspects of the car. My comment is I would buy a boxter GTS few months ago until I saw that the new model coming soon, I wait the decision for that reason. What I dont know is that not the GTS version of this model. I know I'm not the only customer who wants him with the GTS kit. Anyway I really enjoy your video ! Great Job !
+davichin27 thanks !! GTS kit will follow later, they always bring that later for their models, I expect that by mid of next year. GTS packs usually rock as they have the alcantara options. Though for the 718 Boxster you can already get leather alternative with basic seat, thats rare with porsche
Thanks Thomas, I'm sitting at home in Canada, it's minus 20c, and I got to go for a ride in a great car in Portugal! fantastic! Love your reviews, one suggestion, can you give us an example of the sound system? nothing major, just a little sample. Great job, keep up the good work.
appreciated! Also tune in to the recently uploaded 911 review from South Africa :) Quite often talking about sound systems, though I m having a hard time as I cannot really transport the sound to your home!
Great review, as always. The replacement of the 6 cylinder with the 4 is not so controversial for me. But there's something aesthetically discordant about the headlights and grill. I guess the headlights curve too much into the center, and the rectangular grill clashes with the curves that define the overall shape of the body.
Thanks Thomas, as always your videos are informative and really interesting. You made an excellent job again. As I intend to buy a Boxter in spring, it is really helpful to listen to your videos. By the way I can train my english a bit more on a pleasant manner. Besten Dank. Übrigens so einen Job, bei dem man mit dem Porsche durch Portugal fährt, hatte ich auch gerne...
Amazing how much the 2 litre flat 4 sounds like a VW / Subaru cross. Not a huge fan of that particular sound from a Porsche.... nothing quite like the sound of a flat six in full song!
i was wondering if you can fit a golf cart bag in the Boxster booth? i love the Porsche Boxster but bought the BMW E92 instead because that version of Boxster could not fit a golf bag :(
You do a great job reviewing these cars and if there is one car I lust for in the "affordable" group, it is this one. A 718 Boxster S is the perfect daily driver-do it all car for me. I can't afford it yet, but I hope to in the not too distant future.
I have one of the last 2015/16 naturally aspirated six cyl Boxster "S" and I LOVE MY CAR - It would be really hard to convince me that this 4 cyl Turbo could possibly be as good but hey..Its Porsche - usually doesn't disappoint...
I like red, white and blue colour on this car, but if someone counts every 1000£ than mazda mx-5 is the choice 16 000£ compare around 50 000£ for boxster is massive saving and for ordinary driver is still a lot a fun to have with mazda-5 perhaps even more. But as owner of boxster you will get a bit of privilege feeling, feel you have something special in your garage.
hands down the best reviewer of cars for potential buyers. This reviewer actually compares all the possible options and equipments, which is so confusing in modern cars givens so many choices for engine, exhaust, suspension, wheels, seats etc.
+Charlie Carol thanks charlie!

The best review I have seen so far on the Boxster 718. Thank you for making and sharing this review.
Great review! It's great to have a German car enthusiast doing reviews on German cars in English!! Very detailed & thorough. Keep up the good work.

celinapayson compare a 981 S and a GTS, that's another level as well. Comparing the best sounding one ever with the new one is a little harsh. :)
Another excellent review my friend! Keep up the good work. You're the best car review. Smooth and calm reviews without the drama.
+Christos philippos thanks man, we can always use more support!

Waiting delivery on my Boxster S, standard suspension and exhaust.
good point
Mike Doolittle
So true. And it doesn't hurt that Porsche has all the extra research money coming from selling the Cayenne.
+Mike Doolittle go to a dealer and drive a 981 there is no issues with power and its way more fun to keep it revving up high blasting through the gears on full 6 cylinder song!
How do you know it's 'more fun'? Have you driven the 718?
+Mike Doolittle
Yes i took a 718S Boxter out last weekend when mine was in for a service.
Excellent Review! Keep up the good work.
Brilliant review, pick up my Lava Orange BS tomorrow. Can’t wait.
Enjoy!
Thanks so much for testing a manual again.
Great review.
I had a chance to drive one a month ago with the DSG, superb.
Hope I can one day drive the manual.
For a little more fun.
If this day comes, let us know. :)
will do
Nicely done video 👍
+pauly0007 way to go !
Thanks for the advise. Keep up the good work & very enjoy your video. Your subscriber from the S.F Bay Area, USA
favorite review of my favorite car! thanks and greetings from oklahoma, usa
+Bryan Wietelman thx bryan :)
Excellent, excellent, excellent review as always, I'm holding onto my CGTS for now!!!
+clarky clarky thanks !!
+Autogefühl Thomas, give me an honest opinion, is it worth buying, would you change a 2015 CGTS for the all new Cayman S (718), what are your thoughts....
+clarky clarky it's a great car but its an extended facelift, there is no need to switch from such a recent car
+Autogefühl very wise words, I also think it is too early for a change, thank you so much for your good advice...
+clarky clarky you re welcome!
Great review thanks. As a owner of a 2015 Cayman S it's quite an extraordinary car to have. The driving dynamics of the car is superb. I cannot wait to see the 718 Cayman S version.
+Ed P981CaymanS thx a lot! Do you also have more experience you would like to share with us ?
I want one! Great review. Keep it up.
thanks, join more of our videos !
Very detailed review man. Keep up the good work!
+Christos philippos thanks, spread the word for us !
Porsche sales guys have a lot to learn from you! Wish it had been you who sold my Boxster 718
=)
Thomas, great review. Best I have seen so far. BTW, your English is excellent. I am envious!
I have a GT3RS, and a 2012 Boxster S and have put my name on the list for 718 Cayman S with PDK. I still think about the Boxster in the summer, but love the look of the Cayman. All good choices. Cheers. Vielen Danke.
+James Suttie thanks so much james!
Thanks for the great review Thomas. One question: how tall are you and was the distance to steering wheel and pedals comfortable for you?
Keep up the good work!
+Deniz Ultanur thanks! 1.86 m, you can adjust steering wheel distance, low/up and seat height
+Autogefühl So you were comfortable, good head room, knees comfortable etc.?
+Deniz Ultanur basically yes I was quite surprised. And better than in the F-TYPE for example. Still, if you want a _really_ comfortable convertible, you should go for mid-size convertibles (Audi A3/ A5, Mercedes C-Class, BWM 4-Series) or Grand GTs (Mercedes SL...)
Great review! Thanks. I don't understand how some people can complain about this car. Sure looks great in white and black!
+aninstrumentalvision Thx, also help us by telling your friends :)
Best thorough reviews of Euro cars in the internet. Thanks! How is the interior room for someone 189cm? Does the GT wheel help a bit? Maybe the Alcantara GT wheel? ;)
Awesome review Thomas,Top Gear UK beckons for ya....
Thomas you are ALWAYS doing reviews in Portugal! You must already have a house here by the number of reviews you make here. :D
+Darkhoof haha yeah I wish I had =)
Great, impartial, honest review once again Thomas. Really appreciate it. I'm interested in knowing if the manual gear change is heavy? I had a manual BMW 3-Series and was v disappointed as it was so stiff and so heavy that I went back to automatic. Can you perhaps draw a comparison?
+The19610211 ye that manual is sporty stiff - some like it some dont
I have bought one it’s a great car very enjoy able driving. I am very happy with this great car 👍
Fun review, Thomas. Thanks!
Big Porsche fan here. I love that plain Jane steering wheel!
And a stick shift.
Rear end styling is not my favourite - same with the coupé.
Portugal looks lovely too.
+Mario Dalla Riva grazie ! yeah lovely place
Wow, the car came out only a month ago and you have a review of it already. Nice 👍
+Armands Deglavs always just for you!
***** Thanks :)
+Autogefühl Thomas, is that You? greetz from Dortmund.
+M4 für Alle Thomas here yeah, greetings to my birthplace :)
good thorough review ;)
+Honey Lam thanks !
Thomas thank you so much really excellent review I’m more determined to have one now
As much this is the best analysis of the new porsche 718 I've seen.
Brilliant comparison review with excellent video and sound quality
+Salvatore Cosenza always a pleasure! :)
Another top-notch video, great job.
+Garrison Dell in your service!
Also tune in to the recently uploaded 911 review from South Africa :)
Quite often talking about sound systems, though I m having a hard time as I cannot really transport the sound to your home!
Ummm....what a fabulous channel! Love the reviews, its what a buyer needs...! Sadly not for this specific machine.
+Richard Hogg thanks, appreciated! Please recommend us!
I love the Review . Thank you
+Haritha Rodrigo 👌

great review pal!
+luka aurikkhio thanks - watch more of our reviews!
Very good review , you great in that one....
thanks! join us for more!
Great review, as always. The replacement of the 6 cylinder with the 4 is not so controversial for me. But there's something aesthetically discordant about the headlights and grill. I guess the headlights curve too much into the center, and the rectangular grill clashes with the curves that define the overall shape of the body.
i'll be back here for about 20 more times, don't mind me
Oh yes this was a special moment. We are also looking back to this. You will also enjoy this: ua-cam.com/video/QzJo_gFtrpE/v-deo.html

Great video...great car.
+Geoffrey Hughes thx geoffrey !
Your reviews are great! I go to Germany a lot due to my career. If I see you there then I'll buy you a beer!
thanks m8 =)
Thanks Thomas, as always your videos are informative and really interesting. You made an excellent job again. As I intend to buy a Boxter in spring, it is really helpful to listen to your videos. By the way I can train my english a bit more on a pleasant manner.
Besten Dank. Übrigens so einen Job, bei dem man mit dem Porsche durch Portugal fährt, hatte ich auch gerne...
I would choose baby blue exterior, black rim, bright grey interior, and black or dark blue roof, that options looks amazing.
Amazing how much the 2 litre flat 4 sounds like a VW / Subaru cross.
Not a huge fan of that particular sound from a Porsche.... nothing quite like the sound of a flat six in full song!
i was wondering if you can fit a golf cart bag in the Boxster booth? i love the Porsche Boxster but bought the BMW E92 instead because that version of Boxster could not fit a golf bag :(
I doubt that would work indeed
Excellent Review Thomas
+deep blue 👍
You do a great job reviewing these cars and if there is one car I lust for in the "affordable" group, it is this one. A 718 Boxster S is the perfect daily driver-do it all car for me. I can't afford it yet, but I hope to in the not too distant future.
thanks don !
Nice Test! Very good! Which color is this? Uni white or white metallic?
Which is the sports car you would buy of ALL the Porsche variants Thomas?
This for sure :)
0:45 Thomas the bad guy, well done man 🤙
thanks! :) keep tuning in and recommend our channel please =)
Soll ich das Boxster oder das Cayman in München kaufen?
