Thank you Andrew for being you and sharing yourself with us. Your sense of humor, enthusiasm for knitting, and kindness and caring nature is such a delight to watch. ❤
I have heard knitters refer to the small quick project after a large and time consuming project as......a palette cleanser. Good luck with your many life changes ahead. Looking forward to a time when we will be able to touch bases again. Until then, take care.

Hello from Idaho/USA. My name is KC. I am 62. Have been knitting for almost 60 years. I have been married almost 43 years at the end of this month.
My lovely wife loves all the things I knit. I prefer knitting lace. Doilies and tablecloths cover our furniture, lol.
I finished 5 emotional support chickens. 2 Elderberry bunnies. Currently on Olivia the Elephant by Louise Crowther.
My arms/shoulders can't handle the weight anymore for larger items.
I so want to get into knitting socks. I think I need to do the 2 at a time style. I started a set some time ago, had health issues had to stop. Now I can't or don't remember where I was. It's sad.
Your knitting is beautiful. So nice to know of another married man who also knits.
Years ago I hid my talent. Now I just don't care what people think. I enjoy it.
Thanks for your time and energy into the channel for us viewers enjoyment and learning.

Thank you so much for this episode! It is wonderful to see your projects as they're coming along! I appreciate that everything is not necessarily presented fully polished and professional. Part of the beauty of this creativity is that it is all about practice, and occasionally untangling the bits.

My first attempt at colorwork was the Arne and Carlos Christmas stocking 2023. I see so many “issues” with it but received many compliments. I gifted it to my daughter. My son saw it and asked if I could knit him some Merino wool socks. Now I’m knitting socks for everyone it seems.

Enjoyed the podcast this afternoon as I knit on a sock. ‘Touch base’ I’m guessing is a baseball reference. If you are touching the base, you are safe, i,e, can’t be tagged out. I don’t know why we use it to mean ‘get in touch with.’ I think the Sanquhar kal is a great idea! It would be fun to try this kind of colorwork.

It was wonderful to hear you again and track with your projects and the family comings and goings.
About the short legs. I have short legs and long body. Purchasing tall clothing is a curiosity for a 5 ft 2 inch lady must seem absurd, but even so the measurements for tall are still shy by 2 inches!
40 years ago I found a good deal on men’s jeans. I was buying for my husband, and thought I’d check in with my sister. Her husband did need some too. Same size!! same inseam! My brother in law is 6’2” and my husband is 5’4”. I bought 4 pr, two for each one. Clearly my brother in law has a very long torso and short legs 😮😊 We humans come in all sizes.

It was fun to see you today. Touch base is a baseball reference. You need to touch the bases as you run around them. You don't have to stay on them or land squarely on them, but you have to at least touch them as you're going by. It just means you're paying attention to the small details of Life that make the journey special. (so maybe because in knitting we pay attention to the big patterns, by working on the small patterns?)

WOW I FOUND you USA MINNESOTA and have really missed you so much. Like all of us... you too have been in LIFE CHANGES and it sounds like you have a good idea about each one working out just as God planned. . So lovely that you can knit here in-between things.. and that encourages me to get something on the needles. I also write with my son on our novel... and also do paintings to give away.. and do pen and inks too of ANGELS..so am quite busy. My son is still in the group home after his liver transplant he is doing well and we hope to move him soon to a new place with us as well. . Things take time.. and I am not the greatest with patience, that is where God comes in... with his plan , not mine and his agenda not ours. I hope you post when you can.. the sweaters are glorious.. and your projects are so fun to witness and see how beautiful they are... Blessings and praying with you for all the changes... hope to watch this again soon until you post again. Love from Minnesota and our family here. Merri ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤💘💘💘💘💘💘💘💘

Hi Andrew: for your sleeves use the sizing of a sweater sleeve that you have, use a tape measure a lot, and take notes for your second sleeve (and use stitch markers) to mark your sleeve decreases. It will be fine. Your Dustland looks great.

  • @dlouisegerlach2304

Yes, definitely an American baseball reference. When the ball has been hit, the runner must go past as many of the three bases as possible before actually returning back to "home / the 4th base" of the diamond. As the runner passes a base she/he must "touch each base" passed if not stopping there.
On a different topic, when you are sorting out your sleeve decreases, try grabbing a piece of graph paper and charting it out, resembling colorwork charts. Each area can be just labeled as to pattern, or to be fancy, colored in. The edges will be jagged as each pair of decreases appears

Regarding the Dustland sleeves: I'd be tempted to try to draw what is going on with the sleeves and then link that back to the pattern. You may need to make more than one drawing/diagram to really get on top of it all. You may need to make separate diagrams of separate bits.
I have never heard of Sanquhar knitting before! That's amazing.
I have been thinking that Scottish traditional knitting ought to get some sort of cultural recognition - in the way that kilts are regarded as Scottish national (male) dress. Knitting is, to my mind, much more accessible than say a full-scale kilt outfit. Knitted garments are suitable for daily use, and while wool can be expensive, there are Ways and Means of getting good wool that aren't so costly.

Hello Andrew, Definitely interested in a Sanquhar kal project. My mum bought me a Sanquhar fingerless glove knitting kit for Christmas and frankly it terrifies me lol. The glove pictures and patterns are beautiful but I think that the yarn was spun by fairies and there are at least 600 stitches in 10cm. A slightly easier project to get me started off would be great. Looking forward to the next full episode. Take care, Kirstin

Oh Andrew that is fantastic news someone found your wool I am thrilled as it’s such an amazing jumper. Well done to the lady who found it
As for the pattern I when in that situation write it out fully in hand line by line and cross off as I go. Only way to not make errors.
I made a cricket jumper for my then fiancée in team colours it was so long when wicket keeper I found him crouching with the jumper pulled down over his knees, yes it was long but not that long, oh how embarrassing was that. It took me ages all cable. I can’t recall making him another jumper thereafter.

Hello Andrew. I enjoyed a lovely hot cup of tea as I knitted along with you today. It is Autumn here in Australia and therefore a more comfortable time to be doing yarn work. I am part of a spinning and weaving group and we gather every Tuesday in the lower Blue Mountains of NSW. It's a lovely group and we have lots of young ones who can take these crafts forward. I went to a local Fibre Frolic Festival yesterday in a beautiful Christian centre set in green fields and bush. Of course I had to add to my fibre stash, which was fun and, of course, totally necessary lol. Good to see you well and in short sleeves!

For the Dustland sleeves, write down the beginning number of stitches you need, and then under that the final number of stitches you need when you're ready to bind off, and substract them...then you'll be able to figure out how many rows you'll do your decreases. Example: start 200 stitches, end 70. You'll have 30 stitches to decrease, count the rows of the pattern and then put row markers along the way.

I am listening to you describe downsizing your living situation and I can relate! My husband and I are moving into a retirement community to a two bedroom apartment from a 3 bedroom ranch home with outbuildings 🤦‍♀️. I’m having to get rid of this and that and the other thing too. We have lived here 38 years and combined two homes at one time so it’s a bit overwhelming😂😂. Best wishes and thanks again for sharing your time with us. 🤷‍♀️

I always get excited when I see you have a podcast. I have never done colorwork but I think I might be willing to give it a try with just two colors.

Good to see you again. You have a lot on your plate atm and I am glad you could find a bit of time to update. We are just coming into winter here in Australia and I am starting to get my knitting out again (way too hot here in summer to knit). Thank you for sharing.

I always enjoy your relaxing podcasts. You are a happy person to watch. We are coming up to Argyll and Bute later in the month. We thought we may come over to the island on a day trip. Do you think we need to come in the car on the ferry or just as foot passengers, please? Thank you. Keep knitting and keeping busy is the best way!

Easier, last minute, to come as a foot passenger. Plenty to see and do wandering around Brodick.

Hi Andrew, so glad you got the yarn you needed. I find sleeves are easier worked from the cuff up. As its more straight forward to increase . You know how many stitches you have and they tell you how many you need and you can work out how often to increase to get there. I would think it would work in reverse top down. I have never worked on an adult sweater only kiddies.
Hope your house hunting goes well , we have been looking but we have a house to sell first.

Touch Base refers to AMerican Baseball, touch the bases as you run around all 4 of them

Hello; I have knitted both the Dustland shawl and sweater. The sweater,as you mentioned, does not give detail or instruction for the sleeve decreases. I made my decreases in the band between the patterns. Use the knit row between purl rows. No counting needed. Each band will get you to the required ribbed cuff number. You can also finish decreases at the cuff if needed. The cuff is 6 inches, which you may not want. Knit another pattern repeat or two to make the cuff to about 3 inches.

Lovely to hear from you, I’ve been missing your wee chats here in Australia 🇦🇺
My daughter and I just sold both our homes and bought one together, I can sympathise greatly your work ahead, as we had quite a task fitting 2 households into 1 !
Love to try the Sanquhar knitting, my brother lives in Kirkconnel just next door, I’ll be asking my sister-in-law all about it.

I am currently knitting the Garter Marler cardigan and I found the exact same thing. The body was completely beginner-proof but the sleeves are almost self drafted by the knitter. Its very odd!

Consider whether you want to do any decreases at all or at least not all of them. I‘ve made the Dustland twice now and the sleeves are quite skinny!
