"From the moment I could talk, I was ordered to listen."
That's a line, right there!
One of my favourite lines of all time ... :-)
The low vocal is the father, the high vocal is the son.
George Ditzel - Yes, that was such a good, creative vocal technique. I never noticed this on my own until someone pointed it out to me. Thanks for pointing it out to others.
I've said this many times, but some people just don't get it. Like Rob G said, you could just listen to the lyrics, but the lyrics come after the different registers. You have to listen to the lyrics before you realize who's saying what, while the register starts with the first word.
@@Leon-wz1js How can anybody miss that??? The low voice is clearly the father and the high voice is the son.
@@laurentco Uncertain. Some people aren't that sly, I guess? Maybe they think he's just stressed and therefore singing in a higher register. Or maybe they are just purposefully being stupid, I don't know...
@@Leon-wz1js I think back to the first time I heard the song and I'm pretty sure I got it right away. Not saying anything about whether somebody is smart or not. It just seemed to be obvious to me from the start. It probably helps that this is EXACTLY what I was living through myself. Feeling that my father did not understand me at all during those years and "I knew I had to go".
This is actually a song about a son rebelling against his father's advice. His father is telling him to take it slow, but he wants to go away and live his life. That's why he sings that from the time he could speak he was ordered to listen. And that every time he tries to tell his father how he feels his father just turns away.
Thank you for your correct interpretation. Hopefully he will read it 😬
I got the meaning of this song the first time I heard it about the son trying to talk to his father but the father never heard the son. I had tears because I watched this happen with my son and his father. Truly heartbreaking!! 😢💔🎵
@@1920Janice 😥
@@1920Janice I used to play this song in my 20s, and the Father part was just sort of a placeholder til I go to express the words of the anguished Son. Now I play it in my 60s and I feel the Father part and hear my own 20-year-old Son's voice in those lyrics.
My son told me recently that he heard this song for the first time recently and it made him think of me and him and our relationship. I went and found my Cat Stevens Songbook and it fell open to Father and Son because I had played it so much all those years ago.
@@twentyfiveyears5010 That's the brilliance of the song, that Cat/Yusef has understood BOTH sides of the argument so well, but, writing it as a young man, he knows he has to break away and be free to do his own thing/ find his own way in life - as young people always have; it's part of growing up...
Hopefully, for him and for all of us, in time the two sides can be reconciled; that often happens a bit later when the son has children of his own... and so the cycle continues...
Low tech and no autotune, real instruments played with real talent. Raw and actual voice. = The Feels
I lost my father 25 years ago. This song makes me cry every time. The only one worse for me is Living Years by Mike And The Mechanics.
I can’t listen to Living Years anymore, it’s too painful.
Try Warren Zevon - Keep Me In Your Heart. Tears for days.
@@DavidB-2268 my favorite song of all time
Leader of the Band is another one.
Lost my father to murder in the late 90s. I was blessed that he knew all his grandchildren but he never knew his great grandchildren!!!
Some more great songs of his Morning has broken,Wild World, Moonshadow
👏 YES!
all the songs on that album.
Morning has broken is my favourite of his songs--but they're all fantastic
On the road to find out is also a good one
@@ronkrupovich7152 That one is even sung in churches as an adoration song for the new day to thank God
"if they were right, I'd agree, but it's them they know not me"
Gets me Everytime!!!!!!
Cat Stevens came to New Zealand last year to sing a week after the massacre at the mosques in Christchurch. He just jumped instantly into a plane at the invitation of our PM Jacinda Ardern and sang at the healing concert. It was amazing. I’m sure it’s on UA-cam. Loved him since the late 60’s as a boy.
G'day from Australia 😉
actually his name is Yusuf Islam; in November 2006, Billboard magazine was curious as to why the artist is credited as just his first name, "Yusuf" rather than "Yusuf Islam". His response was "Because 'Islam' doesn't have to be sloganised. The second name is like the official tag, but you call a friend by their first name. It's more intimate, and to me that's the message of this record." As for why the album sleeve says "the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens", he responded, "That's the tag with which most people are familiar; for recognition purposes I'm not averse to that. For a lot of people, it reminds them of something they want to hold on to. That name is part of my history and a lot of the things I dreamt about as Cat Stevens have come true as Yusuf Islam."
@@tonymacneil9253 🙄
@@suemontague3151 what's wrong, truth hurt snowflake. "The more you know"
@@tonymacneil9253 don't patronize me thankyou, it's a great song who cares what you commented " snowflake "
Morning has Broken is his best song ever he was great
All the songs from his Greatest Hits album are amazing
You guys DO know “Morning Has Broken” is a Protestant hymn? I’m Episcopalian. We sing it in our church! It was written in 1931, 40 years before Cat Stevens (aka Yusuf Islam) recorded it!!
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_Has_Broken?wprov=sfti1
Its a hymn!!! You can find it in hymn books in churches, or school hymnals especially.
Peace Train and Wild World are my favorites from Cat Stevens
"If you want to sing out, sing out" is his best song in my opinion. So relatable nowadays
My favorite song by Cat Stevens and so deep and lasting. As a twenty two year old in 1972 the lyrics meant so much to me and others of my generation. Thankfully a year later I found the one I needed to be with. It lasted almost 30 years. My fault. I married again and we've been together for almost 20 years. We're happy. Your life is so short it's almost laughable. Give yourself totally without reserve. Love your parents. Your family.Your close friends. It's all over so fast that you barely have time to ask where it went. Peace.
I dont if it's because it was the 70's or that raw emotion is felt so much stronger at a younger age. Times so much simpler and real back then
Morning Has Broken and lots others like THE WIND
I had a morning wedding and had, Morning Has Broken played before I walked down the aisle. Then the wedding march
'Peace Train'......'Where Do the Children Play'......a bunch of hits he put out, and then just walked away from the music business. He returned maybe 15 years ago, under the name Yusef Islam. Still sounds just as great as ever.
He didn't just quit music and come back under a different name. He converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusef Islam. He also endorsed a fatwa calling for the death of Salman Rushdie, a former Muslim who wrote a fictional story called The Satanic Verses that Ayatollah Khomeini of Iran declared blasphemous. He has since given some half-assed excuses about it being an example of his British dry sense of humor or just acknowledging that Khomeini had indeed called for his death. Both bullshit of course. But yeah, a lot of his 70s stuff as Cat Stevens was great. Give Another Saturday Night a listen.
195511SM Some of my favorite songs!
@@NT-fo3me thanks for explaining why he left. I was so sad when I heard he wouldn't be making music anymore. It was so awesome seeing him return singing Peace Train. My favorite is Where Do The Children Play. I love all his music though.
Easily one of the best songs ever recorded, what a poet
If you want to sing out, sing out - Harold and Maude soundtrack
YES! I love that movie! Wild World, Morning Has Broken, Peace Train,
@@sassymessmess9110 one of my fav films of all time!
Great flick!..Haven't thought of that in years.
Harold and Maud . . . cult classic . . . a must see movie~
You have wisdom way beyond your years bro. I love how expressive and honest your reactions are to this song. I am old enough to remember this song from 1970. Cat Steven was a great artist. Check out his incredible "Foreigner Suite" It's 18 minutes long and a true masterpiece.
Cat Stevens ....Yes !!
"The Wind"
One of many of his great songs
It hits me the same way everytime I've heard it for the last 40+ years. It reminds me of my relationships with my dad. And the relationship I have with my son. I've been the son in the song and the father. It's a song for every man
Yeah, Cat was known for making acoustic guitar and piano more rustic and real... his raw emotion always apparent.
Each album had a ‘feel’, a little difference that showed his growth. Lots of great songs, Sitting, The Wind, Peace Train, Morning Has Broken, Moonshadow, Wild World, Oh Very Young, Can’t Keep it In, The First Cut is the Deepest.
And those are just the radio cuts. Have fun, Jay!
He was singing father and son points of view
Great song. Another beautiful song in the same vein is “Cat’s In The Cradle” by Harry Chapin.
Morning has broken is a Scottish him. The lyrics were written by Eleanor Farjeon, the music was an old Gaelic tune. I just found that out a couple weeks ago.
Cat Stevens has always been one of my favourite Singer/Songwriters and for a moment there in the seventies he was the biggest star on the planet... I love every song that he has written and sings !!!!!
Wild world
Thank you Javon! Peace to you too bro bro you made my Dad smile
I love your reaction my friend,I’m now 60 years old,my father wasn’t the best of men,but he was my dad,so this song just makes me stop and think. How I wish, their are occasionally tears.
Check out Oh Very Young One. Great song by Cat Stevens.
He was actually quite young when he wrote this and several other songs as well. There are still some of his songs on UA-cam and even a few of his concerts. You won’t be sorry!
At 74 years old I grew up with this music. A lot of he music from our time had a lot to say. So glad you enjoy this song from our time. rock and roll will never die.. :)
He wrote and performed the soundtrack on the early 70's film Harold And Maude!! You should watch it!!
I have 2 sons, 30 and 22. The oldest just got engaged and the youngest just found a wonderful girl that I think he'll stay with. As a father, it's hard to make them understand that life can't be rushed into. I know they need to make their own mistakes, but I hate to see them get hurt. I guess as parents, no matter how much advice we can give the kids will ultimately do what they want. This song always gets to me.
This song brought a tear to my eye in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 when it was played during Yondu's funeral. That was the perfect song for that scene.
Beautiful song, Beautiful reaction ❤️
Oh yes Cat Stevens!!! Very old memories sitting in my older sister’s room as she listened to his songs. Listen to Peace Train. You’ll love it.
Cat Stevens (Yusuf) is one of my all time favs. So many memories of my youth came flooding back watching this vid. Cheers bro..
My husband and our son are so close. This song breaks my heart, I know a few teens that are not so fortunate.
Great pick! My favorite song by him. "Wild World" and "Morning Has Broken" are a couple of good ones.
Wait till you hear Peace Train 😁
Right now I'm smiling from ear to ear! It was great to see your reaction and to hear what you said. Cat has always had a profound influence on me. It's honest and so very real. From this old man to a younger man, Peace,Joy and a happy life.
lol poor guy. "I wasn't expecting to have emotion from this song". You're not alone there friend.
This is one of those songs for me that when I’ve heard it at different stages in my life, I’ve taken different meaning from it. Moonshadow is one from him that I’ve loved too. I was 5 years old or so when I came out, and it used to make me laugh. When I had kids of my own, I sang it to them and the charm was still there, those many years later 🌻
this one can still make me choke up. you cannot go wrong with any of his music.
What you've heard is going to change and all you have to do is play it again.
When all my school friends were into the Osmonds and David Cassidy, I was into Cat Stevens. Wonderful singer/songwriter.
Saw him live in 1975 at the height of his hype in Seattle. Great show.
This is one of the first songs I learned on guitar
Cat Stevens "Oh very young"
Cat Steven's is incredible. Check the song "Sad Lisa". For good concert footage try "The Earth Tour" (1976).
Love Cat Stevens, a voice of his own, love it! Especially for this song, Father & Son. Thinking of his own son too.Beautiful.
You are such a wise young man and you speak from your heart.
The calm part is the dd, the impassioned part is the son.
Song still gives me goosebumps to this day...
Cat Stevens great music. Another good one is Oh very young. Great musician.
This is my favorite song by him by far. It’s just beautiful and it gets me every time! Thanks for doing this song!✌❤
Morning has broken is a great song
I saw Cat Stevens live in 2016. We were in a small theatre, and he was on stage on his own, an accoustic guitar and that was it. He talked and sang about his life. It was outstanding.
Another great song on parents and their children is "Teach your children well" by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young!
So wonderful to have Cat/Yusuf back after all these years - his music was part of the soundtrack of my high school years - so happy to see him embrace it all again.
Love Cat Stevens. He has a great catalogue, Lady D'Arbanville, Matthew and Son, Wild World are just a few I like.
This is my favorite Cat Stevens song. It always gets to me. I love a lot of his songs but this one is special.
The father and son are talking back & forth to each other. Father telling him what to do, but son saying no- I don’t want to do it your way. Very touching. Love your reactions.
Used to cry to this song when I was 18. Parents hurt me all the time. Didn't know me. I had to go.
it's a wonderful dialog between father and son told in such a beautiful, lyrical way - the power is in the care the father shows in his wish for a safe, conventional life, and then the anguish in the voice of his son who knows there is an inner draw towards his yet defined dreams. This always spoke to me in such a deeply personal way and I imagine it would still would for every generation.
I love Lady D’Arbanville, and Wild Word. Where do the children play is one that always hits me as well and is definitely one to check out!
The more you listen to this song more clearer it becomes especially with age!
Oh gee, just another one of the wonderful Cat Stevens songs that even now, so many years later that I can't get through without the tears welling up. Unique, honest and pure. A truly timeless artist. The world has never needed the Peace Train more than now.
Finally, someone played one of my requests! Halleluiah! This is actually my favorite song of his, but there are a lot. One with a beautiful piano accompaniment is "Morning has Broken."
I like your reactions. You listen and feel with your heart. Wisdom in your words too.
He was one of the most wonderful singer in the 70s. Lots of great hits like " wild world"
" moonshadow", etc. And then he disappeared. He's come back in recent times.
Do Peter Sarstedt, "where do you go to my lovely". Amazing story, amazing vocals
A beautiful, moving song from the heart!
Cat Stevens is a legend.
Brings back some great memories. My son's favorite lullaby was when I would sing Cat Steven's Moonshadow to him at bedtime. He's 33 now, and thankfully, we have always listened to each other.
Cat Stevens is one of the greatest singer/song writers to grace our planet!!!
This song is one of the most iconic songs of the last 70 years! You will love reacting to Mikes From Nowhere, Can’t Keep It In, Old Schoolyard,Into White, Sweet Jamaica
He wrote the first cut is the deepest. That is a must listen!
A heartfelt song that is timeless. Makes me cry each time.
He is amazing. ♥️
Wow! So true! Just yesterday my sons were 2 and 4 years old. Now,,,, 31 and 33. Live in the moment. ❤️
He's singing both parts - the father part and the son part - amazing lyrics and performance
I have to say I am so happy for you! You are experiencing some of the best music from the past 40-50 years. I'm bawling listening to this. I used to play guitar - lots of Cat Stevens, Donovan, Beatles and lots of having around trying
Cat Stevens is a good man. The only child of his mother. He wrote his own songs & music for the world to hear.! 😊👍🇱🇷
Yessss Cat Stevens is my HEART ❤️
My favorite song when I was 15 in 1971. I never had a father but this song spoke to me anyway. I still love it deeply.
This song is in Gardians of the Galaxy 2 during Yondo's funeral in space .Sweet moment in the movie. 🧑🧟♀️👨🏽🦲🦝🥬
He is and was a true story teller through his music & songs. Grew up with his voice & melodies in our home.
Yusef/Cat Stevens is wonderful. Incredibly handsome, back in the day. So talented. Thanks for this!
A father giving some somber advice to his son, who also has not been listen to by his father.
Father: "Its not time to make a change, just relax; take it easy your still young, that's your fault, There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl settle down, If you want you could marry. Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy. I was once like you are now, and I know its not easy, to be calm when you've found something going on. But take your time, think a lot, why think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not."
Son: "How can I try to explain when I do he turns away again. Its always been the same , same old story. From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen. Now there's a way and I know I just have to go away. I know I have to go."
Father: "Its not time to make a change , just sit down, take it slowly. Your still young, that's your fault. There's so much you have to go through. Find a girl settle down. If you want you could marry. Look fat me, I am old but I'm happy."
Son: "All the time that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside. Its hard, but its harder to ignore it. If they were right. Id agree, but its them you know not me. Now there's a way and I know, that I have to go away. I know I have to go." -Cat Stevens
A masterpiece!
Cat Stevens has so many wonderful songs.
It is not just the father talking to the son, but the son responding back to his father.
“Sitting” from Catch Bull at Four and the last 3 minutes of “Foreigner Suite” which is an 18 minute song by Cat from the album Foreigner.
I am now 63 and my daughter is 35. This song by Cat Stevens explains our relationship very well. I saw her objection to my advise as stubbornness. She saw my advise as intrusion and control. We no longer speak and have not done so for many many years. Living life in the fast lane.
One of the greatest song writers of all time and this song is definitely in the top ten songs of all time for me.
From France
This man touch your heart
one of a legend’s greatest songs. amazing.
Cat Stevens is so awesome. Love all his music
Everything Cat Stevens has done is brilliant..
Cat Stevens has been a longtime favorite for me.
A short list of songs that I think you might dig: Morning Has Broken, Where Do The Children Play?, Oh Very Young, Peace Train, Wild World....
