    Great song about....
Vincent Willem van Gogh 30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890 who was a Dutch post-impressionist painter and who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. He was not commercially successful, and his suicide at 37 came after years of mental illness, depression and poverty.

Van Gogh had a very devoted brother Theo that went back and traced Vincent's travels to find his paintings after he died. Some were exchanged for rent while he painted. Upon finding one farm VIncent had stayed at, Theo was greatly saddened to find a chicken coup lined with Vincents paintings to keep the birds. The woman had even put some paintings left by a despondent painter under the coup to keep the hay clean. As stated by other writers here he experienced no financial success for his work during his life. He died in 1890 and now 130 years later we now remember him through the eyes of another artist.

This is my favorite Don McLean song.
I was 8 when it was released. I was the youngest of five, and younger kids often are exposed to knowledge a bit above their years through older siblings interests, so I knew Van Gogh's story & a good deal of his works.
I wept deeply at the poignancy of McLean's tribute to Van Gogh's tragic, yet genius, mind.

By now you know Vincent's story. But Don Mclean has so much breadth to his voice, it is almost like he is holding back. Van Gough was dead about 100 years before he was even born, but through his art he feels like he knows him. Good point.

I was young when this was released. I always drew and painted as a child, which kept me in a different place because life was not easy coming from all sides. This song came out and it hit a nerve. I always tried to cheer them up, but it never lasted long, if at all. So, this song means a lot to me. I have a large framed print of The Chair hanging up, which is above a same shaped wodden baby chair that was bought for me when a baby, before i realised that life was not going to be easy. Beautiful song.

There's something particularly touching about someone talking about the suicide of Vincent van Gogh like he was someone's friend who recently died. I think that's more concern than Vincent felt at the time he did it.
And this song inspired me to take up oil painting. It didn't last long, but I did, lol! No worries, it's not like my dreams got murdered or something... I'm an artist in a variety of media but for that brief period I tried oils. Kinda fun, kinda stinky and messy, definitely an education. I think I'll stick with acrylics and the other stuff, though.

i'm 64, and have had a love for van Gogh most of my life, especially after, aged 17, i attempted suicide and was placed in a mental hospital. Vincents art was an expression of his desire to paint emotion. that was his goal. whatever he painted, he, most of all, painted emotion.

Not only does McLean perfectly describe Van Gogh's story through his lyrics, it describes the story of a countless number of people. As someone who lost a somewhat close family member to suicide the story is spot on with the grief that comes with suicide. I shed a tear every time I hear it. Each line perfectly describes each of Van Gogh's artworks in a way only possible by a poet.

After seeing Don McClean in concert, Lori Lieberman wrote and recorded this. Unfortuately, she involved Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel in composing it, who basically stole it from her. Roberta heard it, made contact with Fox and covered it. She did a beautiful version but I like to give credit where credit is due.

Vincent was in an asylum when he painted Starry Night from the window of his cell. He had schizophrenia and heard voices and that's why he cut off his own ear to try and stop the voices.

Van Gogh didn't chop his own ear off. It is a common misconception / folk law. People who have actually looked into the police records, hospital records, eyewitness accounts and letters sent by both men, have seen that he actually lost it to Paul Gauguin in a duel. Gauguin was an accomplished fencer and a good friend of Vincent's, but they often had massive falling outs with each other.

I'm glad you got to this one. One thing though, Vincent wasn't a friend of his. Vincent was here and gone way before Don was born. Check out his back story. The picture of the man with the black hat and a bandage on the side of his head was Vincent's self portrait. At one point he had cut off his ear( thus the bandage), and yes sadly he did end up committing suicide. His paintings are now famous and can be seen in galleries

This is the most beautiful piece of poetry Ive ever heard . Im a poet and I am always amazed by these lines. I also cry everytime I hear them. This man has an incredible ability to communicate his feelings. Vincent painted with his paint strokes, Don paints with words. Everything he says, I can see clearly in my mind. Jay, this is about the great famous painter Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch artist. He had a very troubled life, having been an epileptic, which back then branded him as a freak by many people, who didnt understand it. His brother loved him very much and, being an art dealer himself, he always tried to help him. He supported him financially and sent him paper and canvas and paints too. But in all of Vincent's short life, he was unsuccessful and only sold one small painting to a woman , who was also an artist. Eventually, he , "like lovers often do", shot himself in the stomach and spent two days dying. Even his death was excruciatingly painful ! The irony of all this is that in 1992, one of his paintings sold for $75 million dollars. You should watch the film made in 1956 called Lust for Life, starring Kirk Douglas, who could easily pass for Vincent's twin. This is the best of the movies made about Vincent (I have two others, made in England) . The color is amazing (just make sure you set the color on your player to a perfect skin tone). People loaned out original Van Gogh paintings for the making of the film. You will see his actual work and Im sure you'll love it. I've seen it about ten times (I once saw it 3 times in a row!) Starry Night is one of his prettiest paintings and is the one you see when this video starts .

Actually, his best selling work, sunflowers, didn't even make the top 20 list of most expensive paintings, bringing in *only* $50 million. Salvator Mundi by Da Viinci is the most expensive sold at $450,000,000. The Mona Lisa is priceless. There is no price that the Louvre would be willing to sell. I'd love to wait for a big economic downturn and when the Louvre is really hurting, have someone offer $10 Billion. Probably wouldn't get it done even then.

This song is about the famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. 1853 -1890. Notice that in one of his self-portraits he has a bandage wrapped around his ear. It’s because a lover dumped him and then he cut off his ear. 😥
Apparently, those that are most creative are also sensitive. They’re often prone to depression. In extreme cases, even suicide. Thank you for your legacy, Vincent Van Gogh. You’ve brought so much joy through your timeless works of art. May you continue to rest in peace. 😌

@JayveeTV ~ I share with you in loving Don McLean’s voice. I heard a interview many years ago with Don and the interviewer asked Don about his “sing song” style and I remember Don answering back that he had honed his style of speaking/singing in his early years of pre-teen and onward, of being sent to the market to get groceries or supplies at the hardware store and Don said he would sing/speak those items from his list of things to buy to the person at the store, in those days you told the employee what you came for and that employee gathered the items from the store and brought it to the register for a person to pay for. Don had done this many times over the years and it was so natural to him that he began to sing in that style.
