  • Logic Pro X 10.5 has a new sampler and a more simple quick sampler. Today we talk about the 10.5 update for Logic. Furthermore we create a granular patch with the Quick Sampler by attaching 2 LFOs to various parameters like; loop position, sample start, loop start, loop end etc.

    I also think individual Slice control would be great, like reverse and pan and...etc. I really hope they will add this features in near future updates.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, me too. I know it would require the sampler to re-render all the slices as separate audio clip instances (objects). In order for the sample to reverse (pan, volume, pitch, stretch...further editing etc.) But it's doable...but require more processing. Quick sampler is....quick sampler indeed. ;) Thanks for writing RS Patel!

      My guess is that the things you’re asking for can be sorted via the Drum Machine Designer, based on the Quick Sampler, then worked with rack sample once a loop is sliced. But yes, will be good if those features make it in the Sampler. Nice one! I have a question for you, later.

    I made a nice granular sound yesterday by dragging a region containing one note into a new track header and selecting Alchemy (granular). There are extensive controls to manipulate the sample, add effects, add other sounds and then save the result as an Alchemy patch. (This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen so apologies if you’ve already covered this in others)

    Thank you for the video, Mattias! Although don't have any Mac in my park, but there's much noise around Logic 10.5 release last couple of weeks, so it's so interesting to see your opinion a little bit)
    I personally think, that all this things added with the influence by some other DAWs is actually good, as one as a musician always has a range of DAWs to choose now, but more or less similar functionality help all of us using sort of the same approaches and patterns.
    You always say, that you usually work in different DAWs depending on the project, so do you maybe already feel, that certain new features in Logic would convince you to spend more time in it? Maybe, there were some scenarios you had to do in other DAWs and now it's possible in Logic.
    From my quite biased "Bitwig for everything", hah, point of view, I can just be glad, that in terms of new features there's probably all already there in Bitwig, and yes, such a releases of some gear I'm not really going to use often inspire me to turn to my instruments and look what nice things is possible there. So yes, anyway it's good :)
    Have a nice weekend, Mattias! Happily I'm a little bit back to my music projects now, again, but it seems to be easier to work on them now. Hopefully, I'll manage to release this music spare time share even more :) I wish you more creative vibes, more inspiration also with your projects! So happy for you, that you're in the mood to play the piano mainly, I'm a little bit on the other side - somehow working with plugins goes better for me, than playing the piano, but yes, hopefully your studio projects will also get their love very soon! :) Have a nice time, mate!

      Hi Alexey, good to hear from you. This new Logic update 10.5 really is a game changer for many producers indeed. As you mention its a big step towards making another DAW closer to the competition. If only Studio One implemented a similar pattern / clip Launcher, all my favourite DAWs are basically the same.. Well not the same completely but in what main features they offer. I still like the fresh Jump from time to time. It demands a bit more from me, its like a fresh challenge. I like it alot, thats why I juggle multiple DAWs. Logic was always on my top there list and now more than ever. I still will play the other ones, as they do still have different native plugs and features which differ. Its all good.
      Glad to hear you are inspired to dig into new musical adventures. Looking forward to hear it. 😀
      Today is the first real summer day here in the northern Sweden. We have around 17 celcius in the shadow and me and my girlfriend is working on the porch. Hopeful and inspired by the sun! I am painting a lot at the evenings. Acrylics. Lovely times.

      @@MattiasHolmgren Thank you very much, Mattias! Absolutely, it's nice idea sometimes to dive into the world of another DAW, not only nice portion of experience, but also new approaches and inspirations. I have no possibility to do it, until all the rest of majors will add GNU/Linux support, haha, but I like this idea.
      Oh, I'm so excited and glad about your working process almost outside - "Another day on the terrace" as one track plays :) Do you also really play some background chill-out music? I'm sure you do :) Nice, nice! Have a nice and productive days this way! I really hope it would last as long, as possible. Great features here for granular synthesis. It's time for Kontakt to make these features more accessible without having to get into scripting..

      Hi Heinrich, yeah I love this update. Hehe, yeah Kontakt have been my goto sampler for many years. But indeed, some features are only accessible in full via scripting. The interface / UI UX could do with an overhaul. I am glad Apple finally made gave some vector UI love to the sampler area of Logic. With the new clip launching it also made Logic a good choice for up coming DJs and arranging fun. 😋 I am still more of an arrangement Producer though. Thanks for watching & writing Heinrich.

    Hej! Har letat överallt på nätet men inte hittat något svar. I Logic pro x file browser. Wav-filer spelas upp normalt när jag inte har låten igång, men så fort jag spelar projektet så kommer inget ljud från wav-filerna när jag knappar mig ner bland samplingarna. Ibland kommer det en sample som jag klickade på för några sekunder sedan, men oftast inget ljud alls. Vad är det för fel? Är inte browsern bättre att man kan höra samtidigt som man spelar låten, eller är det något fel på mina inställningar.

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  4 роки тому

      Hi Peter, while having a track / project playing -> If you use the regular Logic Loop Browser library the audio files will play back accurately and in sync with your project. BUT if you use the regular file Browser of Logic the .wav files from your storage will not play (sometimes play). It looks like a bug indeed. Maybe it has something to do with how Logic tries to fit (remap) the tempo of the .wav files to playback against project target bpm (which it does with the Apple Loop Browser files). It seems like they missed to fix this (or maybe exclude stretching / tempo mapping) in the regular File Browser. We just want to play back the files RAW from the storage. ;D
      That said, I never use the regular file browser of Logic. I rather always use FINDER to search for samples and drag them into Logic when I find something that sounds nice. In Finder just press space on a sound file, then use the arrow keys to walk through your folder. But Apple should fix this issue.
      Maybe you should file this issue as a bug report to Apple support?
      Cheers, Mattias

    • @spegelkula
      @spegelkula 4 роки тому

      Tusen tack! / Yes I should make a bug report. The finder dosnt work in full screen mode, and also the point with preview-channel (hidden in the mixer) is to change volym and even play the files with effects. Now I know its a bug then. Thank you!

    When I try to do granular, depending on the length of the loop point, the pitch changes..is this a common problem ?

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 роки тому

      Yes, granular synthesis is about playing small fragments of a wavefile, each fragment has an envelope and slight offset startpoint. But if you have a static length and start to lower the length. If it gets into small cycles of the wavefile you get pitched content. The smaller loop length, the higher the pitch (as faster cycle repetitions result in higher pitch). So that is indeed the case when shortening the loop length.
      It becomes a synth oscillator when it goes into single cycle territorium. Which can be good if your granular sample content is not steady pitch through out.
      I like to have a piano patch on a second track and tune the granular instrument to the piano so I know it stays in pitch.

    • @Bigjuggs64
      @Bigjuggs64 3 роки тому +1

      @@MattiasHolmgren So when you tune the granular instrument, do you do it by adjusting the loop length ? or tune it by the pitch ?
      Is there a way to make logic automatically adjust the pitch regularly ? So if I play the C note, I get the C note..

    • @MattiasHolmgren
      @MattiasHolmgren  3 роки тому +1

      @@Bigjuggs64 I mostly tune granular instruments via pitch. Since I mostly work with sound sources that are already in pitch. But the sample (wavefile) used might be a flute instrument playing a note of G so I repitch the instrument so it's mapped according to the keyboard layout. Which means when I play a C the granular instrument will generate a C...and not a G. ;)
      If the sound source is all over the place with pitch I often work with just a small portion of the sound source which has a pretty steady pitch. So set the loop length very small and don't let the play start-offset travel so far that your playback gets out of tune. Sometimes it's very easy to work with the source material. And sometimes it require more work.
      Hope the info helps.
