It's not that difficult to break out of a jail even today, if you have it planned out and the chance arises. I've seen people literally walk out, without even being chased. It's what they do once they're out that they don't plan for. I would assume it wasn't difficult to do so in the 70s for someone like him. I want to make it clear I said Jail and not prison.
