Turbo replacement on Toyota Land Cruiser Prado LC120

How to remove a turbo on a Toyota diesel 1KDFTV.
How to install a turbo on a Toyota diesel Toyota land cruiser 1KD- FTV
Just did a turbo replacement on the hilux with the same motor. Very easy. Didn’t need to move ac or anything. Air box out. Took off Intercooler pipe to turbo and exhaust and oil and coolant lines. Only thing different. Removed a stud from the turbo to exhaust to get turbo out. Only thing I did different. Cheers for help
I’m about to change the turbo on mine, could you message me for any issues I might have?
We did this same job over the weekend and managed to do it without moving the AC compressor but it looks easier with moving it. Great video, I am glad I watched it before we gave it ago
Mate did you take it out the top as well?
Managed to pull the turbo out with the help of this video so I am very appreciative, Anthony and Johnny are just too good and makes it look like a walk in the park. the 3 12mm nuts between turbo and the dump pipe (7:43) are a absolute b* to remove, I almost rounded one off which would be disastrous. If you are working off the floor/jackstand I'd recommend removing AC compressor, alternator and alternator bracket out of the way, does not take long and frees up so much space. Toyota workshop manual recommends removing the exhaust manifold together with the turbo. Good time to do your engine mount as well Toyota quoted almost $1000 in labour to do both engine mounts and this side is the much harder side
Fantastic camera work ..very informative 👍 Anthony
Wow! Thank you for this great video.
Those wide open intake an exhaust orifices - I guess something stuffed in them while we do fitting would be a good caution.
Nothings going in there and the turbo is getting replaced we don’t need to put rags in the way so that we know when to protect things it’s OK
Excellent. Thanks. Guessing it would be a good time to change the engine mounts as well on a high mileage car.
You could reach the oil feed pipe from the top of the engine. 17mm. Its a pain in the arse to get the dump pipe 3 bolts off. I’d take exhaust off from 2nd joint and the first right below the turbo and off the mounts
Compressor housing and in/out are open .
Thats a no no
I'll take points for you, but still
Awesome information, educational and entertaining.
Great work champ
Needs a few bits and supplies please call
All the best 👍🏼
Why dont you prime the new turbo or is it not necessary?
For the 1KZ the CT12B is obsolete , what is the best (reliable) alternative ? Thx
Love your videos!!... I Keep getting P0046 error with check engine light. only when i drive on highway for 2+ hours. Power goes half until i restart car... Should i replace turbo?
I have now watch quite a few of your vids and yes as you have stated many time... the information is or can be universal (prob not in those exact words) across the board.. Still prefer the Isuzu 4JJ1. :) . Keep up the good work.
I did mine recently. It was a tough job to remove the turbo unit.
Hi what I like to do is removing the whole manifold and the studs Make the work very easier and you can remove it a whole unit Without removing the downpipe
You are correct that's exactly what I did...
Have you got a video on changing the thumastate on this landcruiser
What sort of kilometres would you recommend turbo maintenance or replacement? Are they able to be maintained and is it in the service schedule? Are they able to be rebuilt or are they a throw away item? Thanks
Maintenance is all the time 5000 km and every time you switch off the engine you need to think
The turbo on my earlier model 1KZ-TE has +350000km on it. Still goes strong pushing 16psi but showing signs of worn seals inside with some oil on the walls of the outlet side. You can buy reseal kits for them and it seems like a relatively straight forward job to do. Their are a couple of points you need to be careful with (not over stretching the clip rings) Just check UA-cam first and watch someone else do it so you get your head around it. A replacement Toyota OEM turbo will set you back at least AUS$1200. Cheap Chinese ones are available on ebay for $179-300. I've only heard a couple of stories about problems with them not lasting but you can clearly see many have been sold and they're working just fine. I do wonder if people buy them and run the boost higher than they're designed for which causes failure. I would definitely consider a Chinese one personally. In terms of maintenance, you can buy a can of cleaner spray of sorts to spray in the intake pipes. I'm not very familiar with that though so might be best to do some research on that. As far as I'm aware, turbos shouldn't need maintenance. Just fix/replace when they fail. Other things to look out for on these turbos is a leaking oil return pipe. You may not notice it leaking as your sump guard/bash plate collects the slow drops so I can be leaking for a long time and go unnoticed. Usually a split in the aluminium hose under the turbo caused by a number of thing's- one of them being too much oil in your engine and apparently engine vibrations can split the aluminum hose.
Under normal conditions though and if the engine is looked after your turbo should last a good 300-400k before needing attention. But on rare occasions they do have problem's earlier on in their life. It's luck of the draw I guess.
I'm not a mechanic and this is all just my understanding based on my experiences as a DIY/enthusiast so take it with a grain of salt. But I hope it helps someone 😊👍
Great job thanks Anthony
Where can I source a replacement turbo
Can it be done on the left hand side without dropping the engine?
Hello from Norway, home of rusty cars
Any warnings to shout out regarding using serviced turbos when replacing the turbo?

How do you prime the turbo after installing?
Any luck getting an answer for this mate
@@edbiggane9185 unplug injectors and crank, will build oil pressure without starting :) I manually pump oil straight into it when I fit so its not bone dry to begin with
i am lucky , a td5 turbo sits right on top of the exhaust manifold
Can anyone point me to how I would check that the turbo needs replacing
Hilux starts to whistle once car gets over 40klms/hr
was this a factory turbo or a aftermaket?
Original
Hi Can you supply the turbo and gasket kits, what's the cost?
Have u had answer in your question?im about to change mine too
Hey mate how can I get to the vip group if I’m not Australian?? 😅
If you were to give me a gift to show, we are friends then I would let friends in since it’s clients only or friends
Just blew a turbo, heard a rattle then no power
hey mate im up in the NT are you able to shed any light on an issue im having with my 2006 toyota hilux, feels like im driving an N/A diesel.
its had new injectors, map sensor, maf sensor, intake and egr clean and the turbo on the vehicle is 20,000kms old.
looking at data logs show turbo only producing up to 36Kpa/ 4.5psi under full load, no engine light or DTC logging and looks like the stepper motor for turbocharger operates, had it in at toyota with no sucess in diagnosing either! cheers!
it could be catalytic converter, just did one on a duramax in a colarado holden had no idea of what what causing the issue.
late to the party, but I'd bet the VNT electric turbo control mech isn't working, or the linkage is seized, sounds like you have limited if any variable vane happening, which is all about spool and making PSI.
How much is a genuine turbo cheers
Hello friend, can you help me please, i have this engine and i want replace the exhaust from 2.25 inch to 2.50 inch . Is it better 2.5 inch from 3.0? Because i heard from some experts that the 3.0 inch well makes the engine weak!
With standard turbo only 2.5" exhaust. If bigger turbo on 2.8 or 3ltr engine then 3". No, not make engine weak. Turbo outlet is the restriction. Hot gases expand when leaving turbine exit so slightly bigger exhaust helps flow. More air out means more air in.
Should soot come out of the actuator arm hole
the replacement turbo part no# has changed from 17201-0L040 to 17201-0L042 do you know what the improvement is on the new turbos?
My hilux at 4500kms (1GD) got to sound wierd. Idk its siren sound or not. But it whistles so loud. What can be the cause. I have uploaded some sound clips to my channel. Is it an intercooler boost leak ?
need new turbo
