maybe he just asked wtf is going on and norton told him he wanna feel something and just absorbed the dude in some charismatic speech like tyler did to the main character
In this scene Edward Norton actually hit Brad Pitt. Despite the fact that Brad wasn't expecting to be physical punched in the face, he stayed in character like a pro.
+Sloth from The Goonies if i remember correctly brad pitt did know he was going to be hit... i dont think any actor especially one of brad's stature is going to unknowingly be punched in the face, although his reaction is genuine and you can even see Ed try to hold back laughter.
+Robert Cisneros Norton was supposed to hit him in the shoulder, but Fincher actually pulled him aside before the scene was shot and told him to hit Pitt in the ear to get a more genuine reaction
Norton was supposed to hit him on the shoulder but the director took him aside and said hit Brad in the ear. It was a surprise hit that made it into the final cut.
the point of this scene was that norton's character was so numb inside that he just wanted to FEEL something.. anything. and tyler showed him how. when you've never been in a fight, the thought of getting punched is scary, but as soon as you get hit it reveals the reality of it.. that the pain is manageable, and even can be addictive because it makes you FEEL. this is why guys fight i think. Society so often tells guys they aren't allowed to feel.. or if they do they are seen as not "real" men. this movie is packed full of very interesting symbolism and metaphors. one of the smartest and most cerebral movies ever made, cleverly disguised in a brutish and gleefully disruptive package.
i would agree with you there. but here the characters really haven't lost anything (anything important that is, like a loved one). and therein lies the issue.. so many people have lived normal and safe lives and they only really know that numbness, and they're tortured by it. they long for ANYTHING that can shake their world up.. although you see later on that when norton's character starts to fully achieve this, he regrets it("careful what you wish for"). it's that idea that people feel like something's wrong or missing with the world/themselves and they search for some greater meaning. and for those that are unable to find it, chaos and disruptiveness give them SOME kind of answer. i think this movie illustrates ultimately the pitfalls of this mentality; although it DOES glorify it for most of the movie. but philosophical pondering aside, there's never been a movie that so elegantly describes the feeling of emptiness and numbness from a life of materialism and safety; and the journey of completely rejecting that in favor of some kind of enlightenment through chaos or non-conformity.
swish007 Hmmm, you're right, pre-tragic loss, there is a longing to feel alive. To feel passionately about something, anything. I forgot about that. The story could have been quite dark if Marla had met an early death. Or if the protagonist came to the realization that Marla, like Tyler, was merely a figment of his imagination.
It is a metaphor. You will not know what you are truly capable of if you do not take action and give a try. Living a life without experience is not worth it.
So by that logic we should all try being gay even if we aren't. I mean... why not right? Don't knock it till you try out, just go out and have sex with someone the same gender as you, what do you got to lose?

May I repeat that Fight Club certainly is a good film if not a masterpiece. It is extremely violent but violence is the real core of this film which is never boring thanks to the wonderful interpretation of the actors and actresses.
Fight Club is one of those movies that hits the spot without missing an inch of it. The nameless narrator (Edward Norton) is an insomniac office worker who lives a materialistic life. From the very beginning the movie comments on the capitalist nature of society by portraiting how consumerism moves the world, but is unable to give relief in the end. Flipping through catalogues of new furnite for his apartment were the narrator's only personality trait. To fight against his insomnia he starts attending to support groups. By lying to people, pretending he has conditions he does not have, the narrator finds relief - the emotional acceptance he finds in the support groups is enough to allow him to sleep at night. The emotional complexity of the character is nothing unrealistic. David Fincher makes a subtle, yet clear, comment on the nature of materialist societies where no one really listens to each other nor care about each other. The system doesn't care about anyone, the distance between people - especially enhanced by how they function in the capitalist world - is a major plot point. However, when the narrator is finds someone who's a faker just like him he loses his emotional escape - " Her lie reflected my lie. Suddenly, I felt nothing. I couldn't cry, so once again I couldn't sleep". Shortly after Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) is introduced into the story, the main character loses everything he valued. Deprived of his possessions he seeks solace in the company of a man who is the polar opposite of what he is. If the narrator is a worker who's way too worried about his condo and his job, Tyler is a freewheeling soapmaker who couldn't care less about all those things. The contrast between them is clear; Tyler refuses any consumerist logic from the narrator whilst making he see how futile is the lifestyle he was leading - "Right. We are consumers. We're the by-products of a lifestyle obsession." The characters here portraid are so different because one of them is free, while the other is not. Tyler, in a nihilistic way, helps the narrator realize that his existence is meaningless enough - something that is clearly displayed in the capitalist world - that all they can do is giving up everything. The self-destruction promoted by the Fight Club is ironically what allows the narrator - as well as many other frustrated men - to find solace in their mundane life. Little by little the narrator is stripping himself off his previous beliefs about job, about behavior and the value of things. It's interesting to note that the narrator doesn't quit his job immediately, picturing how hard it is actually to cut ties with the system - he eventually does though. Many subtopics are discussed through the movie. We see the narrator and Tyler, now living together, talking about many things. They talk about how both had an absent father, how both lacked a sense of direction in life at some point and were told to follow the common sense - "He says, 'get a job'. So, I'm 25, I call again and say, 'now what?' He says, 'I dunno. Get married". The nature of the system we live in tells us what to do since the moment we're born, while both of them agree on that, they also agree that this is all a great waste of time. It's important to notice though that both them had no significant connections with other people, especially with women as Tyler comments - "We're a generation of men raised by women. I'm wondering if another woman is really the answer we need". As the club grows the movie delves even deeper in those reflections about what really matters in life - "Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy s**t we don't need". Tyler becomes the source of inspiration for everyone who attends to the fight club; everyone is much more like the narrator, but they're striving to be more like him. At some point, Tyler decides that the club is meant to be something bigger - what he would call Project Mayhem. While the original Fight Club was something kept like a secret idealized to give some sort of freedom, through self-destruction, to its members, Project Mayhem is about declaring a fight against the system. The frustrated collective consciousness was the straw that broke the camel's back - "We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pi**ed off". However, the narrator starts to slowly go against what Tyler was meaning to do - kinda of recalling a bit of his past self and a sort of respect for the authority of society - and when this happen it's the moment the movie reaches its climax. The genius of the movie is displayed when we discover that Tyler Durden and the narrator are the same person, they have always been the same person. Due to his declining mental health and his rather meaningless life, he created an alter-ego - someone capable of manifesting everything he wasn't as a system abiding person. The contrast created by Tyler's different personalities is amazing to watch as the truth unfolds; and the ambivalence created when we discover the truth about Tyler Durden is even more marvelous. This movie portraits very well how a person can reach the extremes of their mind in a system that overlooks the relevance of your very existence - when you become just a number, just a braindead member of society, having your hopes and wishes constantly ignored. In the end Tyler recovers his sanity only to see that his actions can't be reverted - so he only stands by and watches. The final scene is beautiful; what could be bettar than watching the system crumbling before your eyes while "Where is my Mind" plays? This movie is a masterpiece and it is so entrancing because of how real it is - in the end the movie shows many things we know and think but tend to keep hidden. It is provocative, funny and thrilling and most importantly: It is so damn real. The plot aged perfectly and I don't think it is going to get old so soon - this movie is a must watch.

Pitt and Norton's characters are very well thought out. Theres a lot of effort put into painting them as two opposite sides of the spectrum. You can see it in their wardrobe, not necessarily the actual types of clothing they wear, although thats also a distingusing factor, but the colors. Norton wearing clothing with cooler undertones, such as light blue in this scene. And then Pitt with his badass red leather jacket. It really makes them so different. Norton is Paler with cooler undertones in his skin, while Pitt is more tan. I'm not sure if this was done on purpose, maybe they casted the both of them because of this, or possibly a great makeup job but either way, its amazing.
In this scene the shots where they are both facing eachother. Brad's side is darker, the light is broken or something. And on nortons side its well litt.
Tyler is a personality so he has emotion too and in this scene he is shown to be a little bit excited and a little bit scared since this really was his first fight
The worst part about fight club is that you can only experience the movie with no real knowledge of the twist once. From then on you are more concerned about watching for hints than the actual greatness that is fight club

this is the only movie that ever had me punch my self. It made me realize how scared I am of pain and that I shouldn't be a coward so I punched my self, then I was like what the hell was that, harder! so I did it again and I was like no that's still weak! So the third punch just made a pop noise on my face, I was dizzy, and holding my cheek in pain, at that moment I just felt pride. No movie has ever made me do something like this, incredible movie.
Until you literally fight someone balls out without any worries you dont know yourself and what you are capable of. I had a fight at work. A guy hit me in the face it did not hurt though. When you and your best friend just got your white belts
🤣🤣🤣
Brad's body language is brilliant in this scene
My adrenaline always gets flowing as soon as that beat drops
May I repeat that Fight Club certainly is a good film if not a masterpiece. It is extremely violent but violence is the real core of this film which is never boring thanks to the wonderful interpretation of the actors and actresses.
The song is called "Jack's Smirking Revenge" by The Dust Brothers.
Dude... Thank you
waitt he says "I am Jack's smirking revenge" at some point during the movie I remember
@@miafitzgerald4126 yup he does
@@miafitzgerald4126 Yes at the office when he fights himself in front of his boss
The fact that the “you hit me in the ear” line was unscripted makes this so much funnier 😂😂🤣🤣
1:45 I love how Tyler laughs to himself here, implying he knew the bottle was actually being dropped to the ground.
Nah. Simply a response to Norton.
It's a reaction pun. Maybe it means both of these things.
No it’s not stop.
wrong!
How does a movie from 1999 looks so damn good?
How does movies in 2020s look so damn bad?
@@ItsJerzykThat's the real question
When you realized that Edward Norton is actually fighting himself
How much can you know about yourself if you never been in a fight
I don't wanna die without any scars
Probably my two favourite lines from any movie
“I don’t wanna die without any scars”
Even the smallest thing in this film reflects its whole philosophy. Absolute masterpiece!
Imagine how he looks like to other ppl fighting his imaginary friend XD
How is he smoking and drinking at the same time 1:40
Btw I'm addicted to that gesture 0:40 great acting!
Federico Dellimmagine the gesture is one of the unintentionally funniest moments. Love it.
Q: What is this?
A: This is a chemical burn!😨
One of my favourite movie 10/10
"How much can you know about yourself if you've never been in a fight?"
I will always enjoy watching Brad Pitt hop up and down like a little bunny.
"How much can you know about yourself if you have never been in a fight"
Very True Lol

Notice how Brad takes a drag on his cig exactly when Edward drinks his beer? I feel like that was intentional.
best movie in the world this movie changed my way of thinking my lifestyle thank u david fincher for such a cult classic
What changes did you make?
It's 2021 and this movie is still a masterpiece! Thank you Fincher for making this film!
*character
Tyler is a personality so he has emotion too and in this scene he is shown to be a little bit excited and a little bit scared since this really was his first fight
The way he jumps to pump himself up. I don’t know if it’s just me but I still do this to this day.
I copied Tyler Durdens hairstyle from this back in 1999 when I graduated HS, yes..I still rock it today, yes I am ok with that.
how do you style it like that
@@Lbf5677 You just let yourself become Tyler Durden
I truly love the way Brad Pitt’s character holds finger and then points to signal he’s ready. It’s so perfectly executed.
1:42 the neon light behind Jack turned off as he´s gave the beer to Tyler haha... this movie and Shutter Island are true masterpieces
very observant!
Sorry but what does that mean?
I think its something to do with all the subtle things that happen in the background of the film when Tyler Durden does something...
The worst part about fight club is that you can only experience the movie with no real knowledge of the twist once. From then on you are more concerned about watching for hints than the actual greatness that is fight club

Brad and Edward sat next to each other at the premier and during the film Brad whispered to Ed “this will be the greatest movie we’ll ever be in”.
the best part of Fight club was when he said "IT'S FIGHTIN' TIME" and fought all over those guys
0:39 The most iconic moment in movie history 😘
All these comment sessions are breaking first two rules of the fight club
The biggest genius of this film is how it makes this feel so compelling and desirable
This movie is such a fantasy
In real life, probably after your 6th or 7th time you've spent a month with a broken hand/rib/eye-socket and lost your 5th or 6th tooth in a year, you'd be like.. "this is kinda gettin' old"
I've been in many fights and I'm still trying to figure out who I am
Fighting just proves how controlled you can be in a violent situation. Training in martial arts is a much better way of knowing yourself.
Man In Water meditation also works. I guarantee you Tyler was the type of guy who meditates
Danny Nichols I need to that
BaldManLogan he was that type of guy that was an illusion 😂
The best part of this was that he was told he was going to be punched in the shoulder during filming! When he got his ear punched instead his reaction was all real, not acting, and the producers ran with the scene. XD
Brad's performance is so natural its crazyyy
my favorite movie of all time.
mine too
I cannot believe some guy saw a schizophrenic man punching himself and thought "I should join in"
I believe fighting shouldnt be as much of a bad thing as its seen as today. Sometimes u can become friends with people u hate after a fight or just feel alot better after one
This movie fascinates me more and more everytime I watch it
the narrator doesn't know that he's hitting himself.
Tyler Young actually it was john cena , it was an uncredited extra

this is the only movie that ever had me punch my self.
Lmao how are you so fat
that punch was real tho

This scene alone is a masterpiece...
I love how Brad Pitt was actually hit in the ear by Edward Norton witch made this scene so much more real and grounded
I have a bit of Tyler Durden inside me.
We all have

Until you literally fight someone balls out without any worries you dont know yourself and what you are capable of. I had a fight at work. A guy hit me in the face it did not hurt though. It was the first time I fought without fear or self imposed restraints. Broke my hand on guys skull. Still won. Very happy day even with that hand broken.
Beautiful. ❤️ I remember when i saw Fight Club a million times in the theater everyone always lost it at this scene. So funny. "Why the ear?" 😂

The narrator likely felt more energy in this moment than he has ever felt, with a possible exception of childhood
20 years ago..... Let that sink in for a moment 😳

Did you know Viggo Mortensen actually broke his toe when he kicked the helmet?
