@@Quan-bo4np I love my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed with the premium and technology pkgs. I’ve added the Overland Torque Tune (OTT), which I Highly Recommend for the 22 you’re going to buy. I also installed a cold air intake. My 23 TRD now has 318 horsepower and 295 lbs ft of torque at 2,300 RPM
Change the oil every 5K miles and the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles and your truck should last over 300K miles.
That's a nice truck, man. I have a 2019 TRD Off Road that's running at 153,000 miles. Have had no problems with it. I use it for truck stuff as well, like hauling wood, towing trailers, and just going on some off road trails too. Mine is not modified in any way, all stock. Just put on some KO2's is all. But the truck is solid as heck still. All I've done is keeping up with the maintenance with oil changes, tire rotations, transmission fluid changes, differential fluid changes, and transfer case fluid changes. I've had 2 recall works done on it with the rear cab light seal replacement and the fuel pump, but those were covered by the recalls. Even though I never had issues with those things anyways. Other than that, I love how old school this truck is. I'm not a speed demon so the slowness to the truck doesn't bother me. Only when I need to pass vehicles on the highway do I feel the slowness, but I drive like an old person for the most part anyways so that doesn't bother me a lot. Lol. Fuel economy doesn't bother me because as some comments would put it, I'd rather pay more at the pump than at the shop. The years of refinement in this truck is paying off in how reliable it is now. So I'd rather take reliability than efficiency. I think I'm going to keep this truck up until the wheels fall off because I do not like how the new vehicles are overburdened with tech and all that. I don't mean to sound old but I don't trust all that tech. I love tech as much as the next person, but when it inhibits the driving experience and the feedback you would normally get from a vehicle is all automated, then that is when I get iffy about the vehicle. So my current Tacoma is such a breath of fresh air in how simple it is and how old school it is. It just sucks with the direction modern vehicles are going. I wish Toyota would continue selling the Tacoma's and 4Runners as is anyways. Like make it a legacy model line or something. Similar to how Ram does it with their Ram 1500 Classics, in which they still sell the older generation of the Ram 1500's, but brand new.
Thanks for tuning in man! Yeah I’m really happy with mine too overall. I’m not a speed demon either so it doesn’t bother me too much. I do the same with all fluid and maintenance stuff, aside from my spark plugs lol I should really do them soon. Glad you had good luck with yours too!
@@hausman-q8d I had the OTT (Overland Torque Tune) installed into my 23 TRD Off Road. It no longer “hunts” for the right gear. The OTT increases the horsepower by 25 and gives it 25 more lb ft of torque at 2,300 RPM. I also noticed an Increase by 1-3 mpg. I’m an old dude and plan on keeping my Tacoma until I die. I usually keep the cruise control set around 5mph of the speed limit. You’re right about needing more power when passing and the OTT , along with a cold air intake did the trick. The engine can “breathe” easier so it doesn’t have to work as hard. I’m quite sure that after my death, my wife will still be using it to plow the 5-7 feet of snow off our private road until she can no longer drive or she too passes away.
@@jeeperwill6262 Find someone in your area that can install the Overland Torque Tune (OTT) and immediately it Increases your horsepower by 25 as well as your torque. You’ll also start getting 1-3 More MPG, (Miles Per Gallon). Also add a cold air intake for even more increased horsepower and torque.
Bought me a brand-new 2023 TRD Sport. I sold my 2023 Frontier Pro4X and took the $7k loss, but it was well worth it because driving this 2023 Taco was so much better for what I need. It feels so much lighter than the Frontier, so I was getting three weeks out of a full tank compared to two weeks with the Frontier. And let's not forget the resale value later on. Update: I noticed some oil around the power steering pump at 1,600 miles. I wiped it off, thinking it was some spilled oil during the pre-delivery inspection, and the power steering reservoir level has always been the same. It currently has 2,200 miles, and the oil came back. After reading the Tacoma forum online, one person confirmed with a 2023 Tacoma that he also noticed oil in the same area around 1,600 miles and was told by the dealer that it was coming from the timing chain cover. My dealership appointment is not until October. I am really bummed out because my reason for buying this last year of the 3rd gen was hoping all the issues from the year 2016 were taken care of. 😭
I installed a cold air intake and the Overland Torque Tune to my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed. My TRD now has 318 horsepower and 295 pound ft of torque at 2,300 RPM. It’s getting better mpg than before. I just got home from a trip to MT. During a Hard cross head wind at 82mph, I was getting 17mpg. With no wind at 82-90mph with the cruise set, I got 21.9mpg. At 76mph I was getting 23.4mpg. The Overland Torque Tune STOPS the transmission from hunting for the right gear and increases your horsepower and torque by 25. Your torque kicks in at 2,300 RPM instead of 3,800 RPM and the OTT doesn’t void your warranty.
I did the opposite. I couldn't stand the seating position in the 3rd gen Taco or power delivery with the 6 speed vs 9 speed The reason the Frontier feels heavier is because it has a fully boxed titan frame which is much stronger than the C channel frame of the Taco which is prone to corrosion. Everyone has different opinions so good luck!
@@scott8238 Toyota has fixed the frame issue though, as the guy mentioned in this video. Not hating on the frontier or anything but a coworker and I both have brand new rigs. His is a frontier. I have a 23 off-road and his has been in the shop three times already but I think it was just small stuff. Nothing major. I had the one recall for the welding debris on the axle and the service advisor told me that it’s basically it’s to check and see and hardly any trucks actually have the welding debris left behind Toyota just being cautious.
@@reggie2334able To each their own. I like the Frontier much better day to day over my Taco and haven't had any issues with my 23. My 22 Tacoma had to be in the shop a couple of times one for the fuel pump that stopped working and the second for a rear leaking diff. The Frame is supposedly fixed but there are still people in the salt belts still having issues because it is the same frame they just added some plastic pieces to help cut down on salt build up.
Nice! It will serve you well. These 3rd gen’s are bullet proof. Yours is a later model 3rd gen so they prob worked out some of the small issues and recalls they had over the years too. Great buy and congrats on the new truck!
Ericochoa4271- My 2019 Ram has a CD player. They stopped in 2020. No CD player. I still use mine occasionally. Sometimes a guy just likes to hear a greatest hits CD. Yup I’m old school also I guess 😃👍
I have a 2012 TRD sport and still have the old head unit with the CD player, I bought the truck four years ago I don't think I've even tested it to see if it still works 🤣🤣
My Dad just got a 23 Tacoma with the JBL head unit. He was bummed it didn't have a CD player. I still have a large CD collection that I ripped to the highest quality using flac file format using a free program called Exact Audio Copy. The truck radio needs the USB drive to be formatted in either fat16 or fat32. I'm using a 64gb drive, and he has like 50 CD rips on it. He's happy. Now the truck does lock you out of searching files while driving, but you can still use the voice control to play whatever file. I arranged each CD to have its own folder in the root of the USB drive. Limitations of the truck was it can have a max of 3000 folders, and a max of 9999 files. So if you had 3000 CDs you could only have like 3.333 songs on each CD. So like in my Camry I was hitting the file limit before the folder limit.
I drove a 2022 Tacoma at my college job and one year later my charger broke down on me so I bought a used 2019 Tacoma and I honestly like the infotainment more just because I can place my phone on the screen to watch a video
Nice review. I also have an early 2017 bought in Aug 2016 and I am approaching 100K. No real issues, still on original brakes and spark plugs. Also 33" skinnies. I did regear to 4:88 since I live in Colorado which helped the truck significantly.
Saying original sparkplugs mean nothing it's a maintenance item that at 30 to 50k should be replaced 100k on the same plugs just indicates poor maintenance oil change is extremely important but so are the other maintenance items
Now have the Overland Torque Tune and your tranny will STOP hunting for the right gear. It also increases your horsepower and torque by 25, while giving you better mpg. I installed the OTT and a cold air intake on my 23 TRD Off Road double cab, 6’ bed. I’m now getting 22mpg at 82-90mph here in north central Washington state and on our trips to central MT. Cheers Mate
Saying original spark plugs means that it’s original and still works without replacement… that means reliability, even if we have neglected to change them right when recommended. Relax man it’s not like it’s your truck
@@Doc1855 I have the same Overland torque tune and it made the truck much more drivable without all the gear hunting. and better gas milage. Id recommend it to anyone with a third gen tacoma.
Bro for putting it through the ringer like you said, the truck looks awesome! Please do not listen to negative comments there are always haters, cause they want one! I have a 2016 and it's been great 👍
Don't chalk up all criticism to just being a hater. Criticism is valid. And not everyone wants these "things". If youre happy with it then good. Don't try to convince others of your happiness.
I have the OTT tune in mine. It is a night and day difference. Best $500 I have ever spent on a truck. No issues and even slightly better gas mileage. No more lurching acceleration and gear hunting transmission. The dealership never even noticed it. My Taco lives in the Cascade mountains, elk hunting and pulling a travel trailer. I have never had an issue.
The OTT rocks ! I had it installed on my 23 TRD right before going on vacation to MT. At 82-90 mph, I was still getting 23mpg. I also installed a cold air intake. My TRD came with the TRD Performance exhaust system. My truck now has 318 horsepower and 295 lbs ft of torque.
2020 TRD Sport DCLB 4x4. Almost 4 years and no issues to report. Just recommended service. 5k oil changes tho. Oh one small issue is the fuel door hinges will dry out, creak and bind causing the fuel door to hit the truck body. I just keep it lubed now and it swings freely without the bind.
Change your front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles as well. I LOVE my 23 TRD ORLB. I installed a cold air intake and the Overland Torque Tune (OTT). My TRD now has 318 horsepower and 295 lbs ft of torque at 2,300RPM and I’m getting 23 mpg at 82-90mph with the cruise set.
I bought 2020 TRD Off-road. The person before me had already put over $20k into an already $50,000 rig , which was shocking to me. But it’s nice because what I have left to modify is just the stereo, and a handful of various overland mods for the bed. I’m super impressed so far after a year of ownership. Things I’ve done are: Overland tailor tune Sealed Air filter system Amsoil oil filtration system Some custom cat covers Things I need to do- Ripp high performance coils Upgraded spark plug wires Maybe a Magnusson super charger…
That’s a bad ass truck , I wouldn’t trade my 2021 TRD ORDC 4x4 for anything out there , I bought it brand new and now with 62k miles on it and it’s running like brand new , and I do tow my car behind it trailer and car combo is 6k pounds and it pulls it just fine even in the hills in Arizona . By the way that 3.5L V6 is detuned from Toyota for longevity, it’s a bullet proof motor VERY robust , it has a 6 bolt main which I will bet not to many trucks have more than a 4bolt main , my power wagon was a 4 bolt main with 6.4L , I just absolutely love these Gen3’s !
I changed my plugs at 55K and was glad I did. Change them when the engine is cold of course. You will need to push down on the tab of the wiring harness with a screwdriver and pull the plug off with a pair of pliers. They are stuck on there pretty good. Bought my plugs at the dealership to make sure I’d be getting the real thing.
If you haven't looked at bed stiffeners already I would consider it. I have a 2nd Gen Reg. Cab and I have about 160K on it and I have noticed one side is starting to bow out..Just something to keep in the back of your mind..Beautiful truck!
Beautiful truck. I like the TRD door badge with the Tacoma door badge and TRD bed decal delete. Looks very clean. I bought a 23 TRD OR at the end of 2022 because I wanted a tried and true proven truck to keep for a long time. The new 2024 redesign hype is just that. It’s not proven and won’t be for at least 5 years. Wait until all the gremlins start coming out. I recommend getting a 2023 before they sell out because once the last one is sold they will become instant collectors items. Keep them clean and maintained and you will never lose money on them. I use the hell out of mine hauling, overlanding and daily driving and it has been perfect. Couple questions in regards to your lift. Any issues with your CV axle, boots etc? I’m looking to do a mild 2” lift to fit 32” tires. Also with your tire setup have you noticed any significant engine performance issues? Thanks.
No issues with the lift or anything wearing. From what I’ve found, 3 inch lift or under doesn’t change the angles of the front end enough to cause issues with CVs, ball joints etc. regarding my tires, I haven’t noticed anything different performance wise. I’ve got 285/70/17s on now, and they don’t seem to be heavy enough for anything to change as far as towing or even gas mileage dropping. I feel like anything 33 inch or under is safe
I’m at 80k on mine and I’m very very happy with this truck. I have 285/75/17 on mine with a heavy open country rt trail 10 ply and tuned and the gas miles are at about 15 but this truck is beyond perfect for what I need it for as a daily and a weekend warrior sure.
2018 trd off-road here in SoCal with the exact same color & trim as yours…Those bubble spots are completely related to the salt they put on your roads. That loose bumper plastic pisses me off, I’m ready for a small aftermarket bumper. Great review & walk around. I feel like I purchased the, “Gear Hunter” edition, I am also soon to get a tune to take care of that issue. A set a rocksliders would serve you well imo. I like the TRD Off-road badging you have, I’m about to take the 4x4/Trd stickers off the bed on mine. I hope to have my truck FOREVER!
I have a 2019 4X4 SR w/SX package and the v6. I have not had any real problems but at 102,000 miles I just replaced a rear u-joint and both lower ball joints. I have kept up on all fluid changes, brakes on the front at 60,000 and rear at 100,000. This is my 3rd Toyota pickup and totally love it except for the crazy, quirky transmission that many of us experience. I'm considering a ECU tune to try to fix the transmission shift patterns. I have gotten as high as 27 mpg but average 23 except when pulling our camper which takes it down to 12-13 mpg. One last comment....Dude clean that engine compartment.....lol.
My 17 has 72000 and she will be with me at 372000, I love her, never done anything except oil changes, tire rotations and one set of front pads. I only get 17-18 mpg with 33’s, so not too bad.
Thanks for sharing, use a decking board (1x6), lay this over the notches provided over the wheel well, two more towards the tailgate. Lay 4'x8' sheets flat. My first Taco was a 1989 model, now a 2016.
My 2017 TRD Sport interior rattled from day 1. Grill and bumper rattled. And the trans struggled to find gears, especially going up hills even after all the updates. Having said that, the engine though underpowered was bullet proof.
23 sr5 4x4 here. Stock. Went up crown king AZ back road .aired down 15psi. Great time suspension did its job going over random man made dirt speed bumps up there kinda hard to see but I didn’t bottom out at all.
On that light, yes they had a recall and it is still open. Call your dealer, they will order the parts and fix that for free. They will also fix any water damage to the fabric. I have the 2017 SR. Even got a free rental, though they knocked it out in half a day.
My 2019 TRD Sport 4x2 double cab long bed and has only 44k miles and the only issue i had was the far right air vent louver broke. I just recently replaced the original factory battery, serpentine belt. No rust yet but I'm not expecting it for Northern California. I still have an open recall on the 3rd brake light but I got to figure a way to take off the 200 lb ARE truck cap without breaking my ass.
I drove a 2006 2nd gen SR5 for 13 years and 180k miles. Traded for a 3rd gen 2019 TRD Sport and have 106k on it. My only issue is occasional gas fumes in the cab when idling at stop light that dealer can't seem to solve. I plan on hanging on to this one for a LONG time as I am not willing to pay for what they're asking for a new truck now. I'm curious to see over the next few years how the 4th gen shapes up wrt reliability.
Lift I have a 2.5-3 inch Toytec boss lift, but recently replaced the boss coilovers with 3 inch rough country. For the rear it’s a 1.5 inch Toytec add a leaf
2016 TRD Off Road here. 94k on it no major issues. Mine never got the wet headliner (small miracle) before I got the recall done./ All it is is silcone and a plastic bevel. Overall pretty happy with the truck.
In January I traded in my 2016 TRD OR for a new 2024 4Runner. It had 84064 one owner miles and was like new inside and out. I really wish I kept it and just bought the 4Runner without a trade in.
Good stuff fella, I also have a 17 off road with 116k and have no major complaints either. Oil change, tires and my first set of brakes at 105k. I live on the north east rust belt and can’t really complain about the frame either.👍😃✌️🇺🇸💪
I have a 2021 and am considering an aftermarket rear bumper. Did you have any issues with installing the rear bumper in regard to the lights/sensors/trailer plug?
It went on easy without any issues. I made a review video about it on my channel that might help you. From what I remember, the only “issue” was I had to cut some stock zip ties where the wiring harness was connected to the frame to get a few extra inches of slack for it to snap into the new bumper. All lights and stuff that was on the stock pumper snapped right in and it was made to really be a simple install. Pretty easy and def adds protection if you were to get rear ended or hit something.
Offset I can’t remember off the top of my head. I know it was slightly negative (sticking out more), but not much from a straight 0.00 wheel. As far as body mount chop to fit the 285s, nope. If you have roughly a 2-3 ish inch lift, you can get them to clear fine from the frame with slightly forward caster adjustment when getting an alignment. I ran mine for a long time without an alignment and they rubbed ever so slightly when backing up/wheel cranked, but that was it. Had to trim a little plastic here and there too, but def no need for a body mount chop
I have the exact same truck, but yours is definitely more tricked out. I'm especially impressed with the grill. Mine is still silver stock. Where did you get that grill? Was it easy to swap out?
Thanks! Yeah the grill and door badges I switched out to make it look more of my own rather than stock. Grill was easy, mostly clips and screws from what I remember. Took me maybe 30 min from start to finish and ordered the TOYOTA grill online for 160 ish bucks I think
I have the same exact truck except it’s black in color. Does your truck idle up and down while it’s parked and when the AC is on while it’s on park? I’m wondering if this is normal?
Good question. Yes mine does this. It’s normal. motor has to power the compressor so as it kicks on and off, your rpm’s will be higher when it engages and lower when it shuts off.
Thanks for this video review. I lost a 2015 Tacoma TRD in a divorce and am looking to get a Tacoma. There was a frame recall procedure for the 2015 frames that we had done at the dealer and the truck is coated with Krown Rustproofing yearly, living in MI winters. I guess I taught my ex wife well, she takes care of the truck. I do the maint. on it still. No rust spots anywhere on hers, they drill small holes in the rockers and put plugs after filling the cavities with the oil spray. I'd like to go a little newer if I can afford it, I'm looking at 3rd gens. I'm was worried about the 3.5 vs. 4.0, but I may tow with it once, it would be a 1991 S10 Blazer from WY to MI, not sure how much with trailer/dolly and vehicle weight that would be, also do you have a trailer brake system set up can you go over that? The lift on yours, any issues, would like to know, I would take mine in to get this done if it's difficult, I'm 48, so not as flexible as I used to be. Any insight on a 6 speed manual?
Thanks for tuning in. I do have a trailer brake electric control box that I installed myself. It was very easy to do, and not expensive at all. Maybe about 100 bucks if I remember correctly. My tow package stock from the trd trim level came with the trailer hitch receiver/plug ins, so all I had to do was buy a electric control and pull up some trim under the dash to plug it in. There’s a lot of videos out there on it too. I went with the brand Reese, and I’ve had good luck with it. As far as towing, it prob could tow an older blazer. I’d imagine with a tandem axel trailer you’d be roughly around 6k lbs, so it’ll be a lot but still what the truck is rated for. Just take it easy when accelerating. I haven’t heard anything bad about the 6 speed manuals, I’m sure they’re great. The automatic isn’t bad either. It will gear hunt when towing heavy loads but it’s more just the computer system being dumb, not inabilities of the truck. If you buy a later model 3rd gen (2020-2023) some of the kinks that my 2017 has may have been figured out by those years. But either way, any 3rd gen Tacoma is solid. Overall, Toyota did a really good job with this truck, and it hasn’t had any major issues. I’m at 111k miles now and haven’t had any issues still. Good luck with the truck hunt and I hope this helps! Tim
Regarding my lift, I’ve not had any issues. It’s been on a 2.5-3 inch lift almost its whole life, and never had any long term wear and tear issues on the ball joints, cv axles or driveshaft angle issues. Everything going strong. If you keep at At 3 inches of lift or under, typically that’s not enough height to change the stock angles to have issues. Some might say I’m wrong, but I literally have not had to replace anything yet that my lift has worn out pre maturely.
I noticed if I spray white lithium grease on the frame where it’s shows rust it keeps it from reappearing also in and around the trailer hitch is a good idea.
It’s made by body armor. Lots of different websites have them in stock, I’d shop around for the lowest price. I have a review for it on my page if you want more info. Not a bad bumper aside from the finish they have on it.
Thank you for this video. Just what I needed. Currently shopping around for 3rd gen tacomas. My only concern is the leg room for the back passengers. I have a teenager and 2 little ones. Oh, and a wife 😅. Considering 2nd Tundras as well but the price is too high for me and also factoring in the mpg and insurance.
Good luck on the shopping. The leg room is tight, def not as big as a full size, but still can ride 3 deep in the back if needed. Just depends on what your priority is. Regular commuting would be fine but an extended trip over a few hours would be rough
I also have a 2017 with 130k+ (110k+ of those came in the last 4 years). No major issues and no sensor or engine lights as of yet. That said, the dealership found the dreaded timing cover leak during a routine service and that was fixed under warranty. That fix caused an issue with a fuel leak (o-ring issue) and squealing noise (loose exhaust hanger) which were fixed at no cost. I've also had 2 windshields put in due to rocks. One new battery. Otherwise, no problems other than things addressed by TSBs. Several trips out to Colorado/Wyoming as well. Edit: there was a TSB to address your door sill rust issue. You're likely out of warranty though.
Good question. I switch between the two. Colder months i tend to go with 0W 20, and warmer/summer time I’ll go with 5W 30. Honesty I don’t think it makes a difference tho. I’ve ran 5W 30 in the winter plenty of times too.
@@timbear3175 Thanks. I plan on buying a 2023 Taco soon(I have a 2010 Taco now). In your video you said your Taco had 100k miles and that's why I asked the question.
My 2016, AC high pressure sensor had to be replace at 100K. OTher than that it great and reliable truck. My average MPG on the highway is 19 traveling at 75-84 MPH
Thanks. It’s kinda a Frankenstein of a lift at this point. I originally put on a Toytec boss 2-5-3inch lift with add a leafs in the rear, and reservoir coilovers in the front and resi rear shocks . Over time my toytec suspension wore out so I replaced the coilovers with rough country struts that were made for a 3 inch lift in the front and rear rear shocks that fit with the add a leaf (shocks that are made for 1-3 inch lift)
Trade Up and get a 2023 while you can ! you truck is NICE and will have Great Resale value at 100,000 miles. . All New Toyotas (except 2024 4runner) are Built without Quality , RELIABILITY and LONGEVITY in mind . Company Has Lost its Bulletproof Vision Recently !
I mean they are changing things most people were complaining about... No power? Improved. Bad efficiency? Improved. Gear hunting? Improved(3RD gen Tacoma specific.).. No manufacturer is exempt from first model year problems. Especially when they changed the entire drivetrain to address the issues with previous gens. All that said, I will be keeping my 17 Sport with the 6 Speed for a LONG time.
@@Donut833 Never had a problem With the Tacoma six speed ! I drive all my Toyotas in shift mode ! the 6 speed trans is bulletproof ! Gear hunting Is worse in a 8 or ten speed trans when going through mountains ! Especially when towing a trailer !
Tailgate down, sheet flush to the front of the bed, one side tucked down into the bed and the other side partially sticking out over the other side of the bed.
I have a John Deere 870 and a dual axle flatbed and I’ve been wondering if my ‘22 TRD Off Road Taco can tow it, with implement, to my farm. It’s only about a 4-5 mile drive from my house and mainly flat land. I see you tow a similar size tractor too. How does your truck manage??
The truck is rated for 6400 lbs towing. I’ve found that 5000 lbs or over is when the truck will work noticeably harder, but it always has got the job done.I’ve gone 3-4 hours with heavy loads (roughly 5000lbs) maybe a little over, and it’s fine, you just can’t drive quite as fast and have to listen to your truck gear hunt and run rpms higher than normal. Bad gas mileage too (13mpg) So I guess it depends on how heavy you’re talking on pulling, but from my experiences, it’s underpowered, but not under capable. Itll handle what you need it to, but your motor is gunna be working. Hope that makes sense
Great video. I am looking at getting a taco and Live in the most northern midwest state where salt is a must for the roads. My Wrangler had Body armor 4x4 bumpers on it and its just the cheap finish they do sadly. It happened to my jeep as well.
@@timbear3175damn I’m from that area. I don’t drive my taco during the winter, I use my old Chevy because I’ve been worried while making payments on this 23’ TRD would rust out before I payed it off

I have 125k miles on my 2016 SR5 extra cab 6 ft bed . The 3rd Gen design here is the standard that all mid sized trucks want to be . Just go ask any Jeep owner they will let you know by tailgating you for 3 miles almost daily . Reliability amazing . If you have the money upgrade 3 inch lift front 2 rear OME or Bilstein no matter so again the jealous Jeep clowns look tiny behind your taco . I keep mine light and weight down always . 3 oil changes per year and your good . In the snow it's fun . I owned 4 Jeeps before I woke up to my Tacoma .
Seats held up good. Really no excessive wear. Th outer edge on the driver seat is starting to show wear, but nothing bad yet. Tuck is lifted so I’m sitting on the edge of it a lot when I get in and out. As far as oil changes and oil filter every 5-7k miles.
None at all. Had the lift on since 15k miles. 3 inch lift or under doesn’t change the angles enough to create premature wear from my experience with this truck. Had a 2.5-3 inch on the front (coilovers) and never had any problems with ball joints etc. I did do aftermarket UCAs about a year ago for fun, but the stock ones worked fine when I had them on too
285/70/17 BFG kO2s. My lift is a toytec boss 2.5-3 inch, but I have since swapped out my coilovers for 3 inch rough countys after the Toytec ones were wearing out. My rear is a 1.5 inch add a leaf.

I have a '22 Tacoma TRD off-road 6-speed manual poverty 📦 I'm leaving my suspension bone stock I just put on sumo springs bump stops that made a big ass difference when I hook up my trailer it does not sag anymore. Also helps on all kinds of bumps because there's only like 1/2 an inch gap between the sumo spring & my frame. Probably make the suspension last longer because it's not being used as much 🤔 I obviously didn't have a deer hunting issue because manual but I did do the OTT tune & drop in dry flow air filter. The truck even tho it's poverty 📦 it came with exhaust tip, floor mats, mud guards & side steps. A lot of people don't like some of that stuff but they were good for my vehicle it makes it look a little better imo. I also did the full Carhartt seat covers front & rear, bakflip MX4 tonneau cover & bed mat. It's definitely rough around the edges compared to some of the other trucks but I dig it that's for sure
2.5-3 inch toytec boss. I recently replaced my toytec coilovers and remote- reservoir shocks with Rough County 3 inch struts and 1-3 inch RC rear shocks after the Toytec ones wore out. I’ll prob do a video on my suspension eventually. Lots of questions about it
I don’t know why the 3rd gen they took away the air for windshield feet and body like the 2nd gen had I like the 2nd gen air vent system super easy to use. The 3rd gen is all clumped up sometimes I don’t even know what I’m pushing and just start pushing random things
Going through rivers past the doors is probably you got the rust issue on the frame . A good wax job and WD-40 can prevent this . WD-40 repels moisture while it still lubricated. Service your taco like AIRFORCE 1.
I wasn't aware of the 2018-2019 Toyota Tacoma recall for fuel pump. I took my 2018 toyota tacoma trd sport 4x4 to the toyota dealership for a rear main seal leak. My tacoma was leaking oil. They told me my tacoma is on the recall list for fuel pump and 3rd brake light recall too. They will only charge me for the rear main seal replacement and labor for $1824. And the fuel pump ( $1200 job ) and 3rd brake light are fix for free by toyota dealership because of the recall.
I traded a Dodge 2500 Cummins for my ‘17 OR end of ‘18. Going from near 800 ftlb torque to the Toyota was interesting (first Toyota)but I must say the Toyota is the favorite vehicle I’ve owned. Have the leaky 3rd brake, and the Toyota bed mat is a must first mod.
Nah no aftermarket gears or tune. Ironically, I’ve found that suburb driving 35-55 mph is the best. Typically I get about 21 mpg locally. But yeah, the best efficiency the computer on the truck calculated was 24. Does worse on the free way lol makes no sense
2016 Tacoma Sport 140k miles on it. Purchased in 2017 wit 19k miles Here are my issues -Blind Spot monitoring system not working -wireless charging not working -AC not as Cold Thats it
Nice. Mine doesn’t have the blind spot monitor so I haven’t had that issue. Never really use my wireless charger but still works and AC seems to be fine.prob needs a recharge on yours. Thanks for sharing!!
Look into one of those window sun shield things to put up on your truck. A lot if times the dash will heat up and the a/c wont be ad cold because everything else around it is so hot
Mine is a 2023, very helpful content! No vehicle is perfect, but 3rd gen Taco's are pretty solid.
Yep, I too love my 23 TRD Off Road, double cab, 6’ bed.
I’m saving to get me a 2022 off road by April it’s very hard but I’m trying Ik it’ll be worth it
@@Quan-bo4np It will
@@Doc1855 thank you!
I have a 2017 sr5 4x4. Just hit 109,000 miles and still going strong.
I just bought a 2022 sr5 last month and I couldn't be happier. Love everything about it so far.
Change the oil every 5K miles and the front and rear differential, transfer case and transmission fluid every 30K miles and your truck should last over 300K miles.
Thanks for the video man. 54K miles on my 2019 OR. Not a single issue.
I have a 2017 TRD Off-road in the same color. Just turned 60K. Been very happy with it.
Very cool video. Just recently picked up a 2023 and I love the truck more than I thought I would.
Right on man, great review. 2016 trd or with 156,000 zero issues other then gas prices
My 2009 Tacoma with 180 k miles SR5 4X4 manual 2.7 is still going strong.
I have almost the exact truck! Bought mine in '20. Currently have about 62K on it. No complaints. Thank you for the Good News!
Beautiful truck! Love the color and the fact that you have kept the body so nice.
I appreciate the kind words. Yeah truck is holding up good!
I have a 23 Tacoma, and I love it. I've seen 9.4L/100kms to 16L/100kms. These are great midsized rigs.
what were the main reason(s) you swapped from frontier to taco??
I bought a 2023 TRD Off Road Taco today with 9,000 miles on it. Pretty sweet looking truck.
Nice! It will serve you well. These 3rd gen’s are bullet proof. Yours is a later model 3rd gen so they prob worked out some of the small issues and recalls they had over the years too. Great buy and congrats on the new truck!
I have a 22 tacoma. Call me old school but i wish mine had the CD player like yours.
Agreed
I have a 2016 and it's been great 👍
Thanks for tuning in bro! Yeah lol surprisingly most of the feedback has been pretty positive so far
Thanks for tuning in! Might look into that
The OTT rocks !
23’ Pro Manual OTT - 23.5 mpg Canadian tank avg
On the Tacoma you can fit drywall in there if you put I think 2x6s in those two cut outs in the bed. 14:37
I have a 2014 taco TRD with 36,000 now I'm going to enjoy every mile driven with it. Thanks for the video.
I bought 2020 TRD Off-road. The person before me had already put over $20k into an already $50,000 rig , which was shocking to me. But it’s nice because what I have left to modify is just the stereo, and a handful of various overland mods for the bed. I’m super impressed so far after a year of ownership. Things I’ve done are:
Overland tailor tune
Sealed Air filter system
Amsoil oil filtration system
Some custom cat covers
Things I need to do-
Ripp high performance coils
Upgraded spark plug wires
Maybe a Magnusson super charger…
Appreciate you tuning in! Yeah man, the motor isn’t anything special performance wise, but def bulletproof 🤙
That’s how I feel about my 23 TRD ORLB.
Thanks for the rec!
@@timbear3175 Thanks for taking the time to respond. Very helpful. Much appreciated.
I’m at 80k on mine and I’m very very happy with this truck. I have 285/75/17 on mine with a heavy open country rt trail 10 ply and tuned and the gas miles are at about 15 but this truck is beyond perfect for what I need it for as a daily and a weekend warrior sure.
Glad to hear that! Thanks for tuning in
2018 trd off-road here in SoCal with the exact same color & trim as yours…Those bubble spots are completely related to the salt they put on your roads.
Thanks for tuning in bro. Good luck with yours and glad u liked the vid. Rock sliders would be nice!
i have 108K on mine, same year and trim/color with that steel bumper. great truck!

What fluid did you use in the front/rear differential and transfer case? What weight oil specifically?
I use Valvoline 75W 90 synthetic for both difs and transfer case
My 2016 SR5 just hit 226,000 miles. Still running like a champ.
Glad you’ve had good luck with yours too!! Thanks for tuning in

2019 Taco here. Absolutely bulletproof and made in Texas 👌🏽
Got 190,000 miles on my 2016. It’s been a great truck I’ve really used it. It’s about due for a new clutch but that’s about it.
What size lift and tire set up you got? Looks clean

Thanks for tuning in man! Hope your truck keeps doing well for ya
Just picked up a 2023 TRD Sport 4 X 4, love it ❤
That front end trim piece rattles big time lol. Love these 3rd gens ❤
What is the offset on your rims? Did you need to do a body mount chop to fit the 285?
Mine will turn on and off every 30 seconds or so depending on how high I have the air kicked on to
@@timbear3175 thanks for the quick reply!
@timbear3175 Thanks for extra info, will help me decide when it comes time, also looking at 2013-2018 Tundras, but leaning towards the Tacoma.
@@timbear3175Thanks again for the extra info with the lift if I go that route or if a used one is already set up that way.
Wish I could buy a single cab, 4cyl with manual transmission as a daily driver.
Whenever you get the chance go for it man it’ll last you forever
I noticed if I spray white lithium grease on the frame where it’s shows rust it keeps it from reappearing also in and around the trailer hitch is a good idea.
The beautiful thing about the hard plastic interior is it will look the same in 20 years
Just sold my 92,000 miles Honda Crv was acting up and got a 2023 v6 Tacoma with 10k. Hoping this will be a 20 year vehicle for me. Seems like it!!!!
Thanks for tuning in. Yes, keep up on maintenance and oil changes and it will serve you well! Good choice on a truck!
I have the tan 17. And almost 90k. Absolutely love it.
Where did you get the rear bumper/who is it made by?
It’s made by body armor. Lots of different websites have them in stock, I’d shop around for the lowest price. I have a review for it on my page if you want more info. Not a bad bumper aside from the finish they have on it.
@@timbear3175thank you!!
Have you ever changed out your diff oil ?
if youre contemplating on doing this DIY, one of the easiest fluid changes to do on the truck
Yes I did both front and rear dif fluid, transfer case grease and coolant flush. Did them in between 70-100k miles give or take
Great video! Thanks for posting ❤❤
Nice truck! 😎🇺🇸
Do you use 0W-20 or 5W-30 oil? Just asking, because I live in Minnesota.
Why is mine saying it needs a cat. Engine light is on and code comes up. I don’t believe it needs a new cat. ?? Your thoughts ?
How many miles?
@@timbear3175 about 150k
What's the lift/leveling kit on it?
Looks good
How did you manage with the plywood?
Prob would haul your 870 tractor easily for a few miles
Great video. I am looking at getting a taco and Live in the most northern midwest state where salt is a must for the roads. My Wrangler had Body armor 4x4 bumpers on it and its just the cheap finish they do sadly. It happened to my jeep as well.
What state are you in I have a 2015 trd off road taco with 0% rust anywhere.. 158k miles no unscheduled stuff just regular maintenance
Illinois / Wisconsin
@@timbear3175damn I’m from that area. I don’t drive my taco during the winter, I use my old Chevy because I’ve been worried while making payments on this 23’ TRD would rust out before I payed it off
@@DanBrandoyeah man.. salt is brutal. Hindsight should have bought a beater for the winter

And the best feature is: a drivetrain that doesn’t fall out @ 80K miles. Looking at you Silverado, Colorado, & Ram 😂
I have a 23 SR5, 4x4. How have your seats held up? How often do you change your oil and filter? Thx.
Seats held up good. Really no excessive wear. Th outer edge on the driver seat is starting to show wear, but nothing bad yet. Tuck is lifted so I’m sitting on the edge of it a lot when I get in and out. As far as oil changes and oil filter every 5-7k miles.
@@timbear3175 thank you sir.
Highest mileage on a 3rd Gen?
About 5’8 means 5’7. ;)
lol bruhh
Haha same
Any problems after lifting it , cv's etc
Nice truck I have the same exact one 23 😊
None at all. Had the lift on since 15k miles. 3 inch lift or under doesn’t change the angles enough to create premature wear from my experience with this truck. Had a 2.5-3 inch on the front (coilovers) and never had any problems with ball joints etc. I did do aftermarket UCAs about a year ago for fun, but the stock ones worked fine when I had them on too
21 TRD sport 4x4. Been chasing front end / alignment issues for 50k miles. Other than that lol…it’s been a good rig.
What size tires/wheels are you running? Lift?
285/70/17 BFG kO2s. My lift is a toytec boss 2.5-3 inch, but I have since swapped out my coilovers for 3 inch rough countys after the Toytec ones were wearing out. My rear is a 1.5 inch add a leaf.
Your truck has the perfect stance & 🛞 size! Some people like to jack them way up with these huge crazy tires those don't stick some people like to jack them way up with these huge crazy tires those don't stick out too much past the fenders very functional & not over the top.
What does poverty mean?

What lift kit are you running
2.5-3 inch toytec boss. I recently replaced my toytec coilovers and remote- reservoir shocks with Rough County 3 inch struts and 1-3 inch RC rear shocks after the Toytec ones wore out. I’ll prob do a video on my suspension eventually. Lots of questions about it
what's the wheel offset?
I wish I knew but I don’t remember the exact. It’s negative by a little (stuck out) but not much.
2018 sr5 with 6ft bed. 6ft makes a difference if you want to carry stuff
I don’t know why the 3rd gen they took away the air for windshield feet and body like the 2nd gen had I like the 2nd gen air vent system super easy to use. The 3rd gen is all clumped up sometimes I don’t even know what I’m pushing and just start pushing random things
Yeah, every now and then I catch myself pressing on the 4x4 engage button instead of the push start too lol
Going through rivers past the doors is probably you got the rust issue on the frame . A good wax job and WD-40 can prevent this . WD-40 repels moisture while it still lubricated. Service your taco like AIRFORCE 1.
Prob right. I like the wd40 idea. Thanks for tuning in!
Dang, you got a best of 23-24 mpgs on 285s? Are you re-geared by chance?
Nah no aftermarket gears or tune. Ironically, I’ve found that suburb driving 35-55 mph is the best. Typically I get about 21 mpg locally. But yeah, the best efficiency the computer on the truck calculated was 24. Does worse on the free way lol makes no sense
2016 Tacoma Sport 140k miles on it. Purchased in 2017 wit 19k miles Here are my issues
-Blind Spot monitoring system not working
-wireless charging not working
-AC not as Cold
Thats it
I have the same year and the TRD Off Road too
throw a OTT tune on that thing it turns it in to a race car and straitens the gear issues out
Great review and spot on. I have a Taco myself 👍
What wheels are those?
Ultra crusher’s 17 inch
I've seen people on youtube get old steering wheels back to almost new. Might be hope.
Did you do oil changes every 10K or 5K?
5-7k. 7k was pushing it tho
