I am late to the party but , you are 100% correct. A little nock tuning does wonders . Got 6 arrows out of 9 to fly true with broad heads. Thanks for info bud!!!
Great video, you are definitely my favorite archery instructor now sir. Watching your videos greatly improved my knowledge and helping me build my skills. Thank you. And keep those practical advice coming.
Hey Troy just wanted to say thank you for all the information you are helping provide the archery community. You have helped me considerably. My local shop couldn't help me with anything as far as getting fixed blades to shoot properly with my xbow. I bought my own fletching jig. Went through bare shaft nock tuning which the shop said was unnecessary. Put on bohning x vanes 1 degree offset with a right helical lastnight. I shot it this morning and wow it works 1 inch groups at 40 with field points and broad heads.
I used to shoot recurves and longbows. Set them up the way you are setting up your compounds now. It absolutely works Great. Everything you say is true. I couldn't believe the difference high FOC, heavy arrows, nock tuning, etc. Improves Everything. Evan the bow felt better. Good to see you preaching to the compound users. Love your vidios. Your a hoot man. Bet your wife was nervous the first time she showed you off to her parents. Stumbled into you through The Hunting Public. I couldn't stand hunting vidios until I saw theirs, seem like a very good cast of characters. Problem is they remind me of how much I have slowed down at 68 compared to 25. Love the one where the kid try's to leap over the fence and crashes. No problem he gets right up and try again and makes it. I would still be laying their trying to get up. Keep up the good work
My God, this works so well. Its ridiculous. I had broadheads fly ----> straight into a tree. Turn the nock and no shit, it brought that sucker a whole foot over to my point of aim. Even with arrows and broadheads that dont spin true! It's crazy how well this can work.
Thanks for posting this. I had a broadhead tipped arrow behaving badly. I tried your nock tuning trick yesterday and after two adjustments it was hitting with the fieldpoint tipped arrow. Thanks and keep posting all the goodness you post.
John Hire That’s awesome! Here to help. When you whack something send the info to me on email. Troy@ranchfairy.com. I have an arrow performance study with over 80 kills - all bows, setups, broadhead types, etc
I am a big fan of your studys. I recently stumbled across this the otherday when shooting my recurve in the back yard. I had 3 arrows out of my 6 consistantly hitting high right. Switch my nock to different cockfeather and they are hitting with the rest. Awesome research my friend. Keep up the good work.
I tuned 10 arrows yesterday. It is amazing what a 1/4 turn can do. Had 3 arrows go from 3 to 4 inches out to 3 inch group in the 3 inch center of my target just turning the nock less than a 1/4.
Place an insert and field tip in each end of an arrow shaft (no fletchings). Use something to compress or flex the arrow (we used a bow press). The arrow will flex only one way. Mark the top of arched arrow, set the up fletching to this mark. Then line nock to the mark and shoot to fine tune.
Awesome video man! Really enjoyed how practical this video is. Really like how you describe some arrows as misbehaving. Archery is a lot about tuning and tuning and more tuning.
Depending on arrow manufacturer, a lot of arrows have a seam. That seam will be the strongest side of the shaft. That should always be indexed up when fletched
Dustin Apple I will try that, my indexing strategy is to just get them all the same, by shooting them. Assumably, when they group better, they are close! Im kind of a Neanderthal. Ha.
Always identify and mark the weak spine plane or the strong spine plane on each new shaft. It doesn't matter which plane you use as a reference. Then measure the spine on every arrow with your spine mark always oriented the same. Keep a notebook so you can compare various batches of arrows against each other. it doesn't matter whether you have the mark up, down, right or left. Just be consistent. Also, it is quite common to find one or two shafts out of a dozen that are significantly different from the others. Set the maverick arrows aside to use for stump shooting.

@@RanchFairy Absolutely, you referred to the one arrow that was OK for field points but not broadheads, I'm an old fart and I hate to waste good arrows, they don't grow on trees (any more). 300gr heads are going to make the spine alignment even more important leaving the bow, that's mostly what you're doing with the nock tuning as far as I can figure out, along with slight inconsistencies in the fletchings. With the broadhead that initial flex in the shaft will induce the "steering" issues even with a perfectly straight shaft, insert and broadhead, I think it's why so many people use the mechanicals instead of fixed blades. If you switch out a nock, do you retune the arrow with the new nock?
Does this apply to arrows for trad bows as well?
No. See my traditional tuning video.
I know this really doesn’t pertain to the video. But I see you have a Sniper Hog sight. I’m torn between the 50 and the 66. In your opinion, what is the sight like and which one would you recommended? Thanks.
William Broadway
Bowhunting get the 38 LRX. You can get the gun rail and still have a 150 yard gun light. If gun night only 66. I have both and the 38 is the one I use most because I am bowhunting. The sniper team was nice enough to give me a second 38 and I’ve run it on a rifle. Totally adequate
Thanks !!

What vanes are you shooting? They didn’t look like feathers.

You ever try floating the shafts in soapy water to find stiff side of arrow? Was wondering if it actually works
Jason Huntley
I have not. Shooting them works pretty good and reflects reality to me shooting the bow. My logic - I am part of the arrow flight process.
@@RanchFairy that makes sense, I'm go in to give white feathers a try on my next arrow build. Thinking about 29 1/4in 340 gold tip velocity xt 100 gr brass insert 125gr black hornet Ser razor or 150 gr buzz cuts. Trying to get around 500 grains total arrow weight with 16%foc for deer. 60lb draw. Do you sell wraps or are they just for You? Good luck with the test lab, results are much appreciated
Jason Huntley
You’ll like the ball of white flying to the target. If you already have 340’s - give them a rip. But consider 300’s if you’re doing a new build. They tend to behave a little more consistently with the extra FOC and a broadhead. “Field points are liars” is what I’ve observed. Like hitting golf balls with a tail wind. Youre awesome!!!
@@RanchFairy 300's check, will give them a go thanks man
Jason Huntley
Gold tip velocity.
Is there any need to nock tune if your arrows are spine indexed?
Yes, spine indexing is a good first step in nock tuning, but every arrow is different; shoot them all.
This is accurate.
Do you ever shoot 4 2" fletch or stay with 3 2" fletching?
David Gaston
I haven’t played with 4 fletch. It’s all the rage. Perfectly fine either way. I always kind of think it’s funny with all the speed focus.
More fletch = more drag. I figure!
@@RanchFairy I know right? I have a buddy of mine that shot a deer this year at 30 yards and it ducked probably 8 or 9 inches and went through no mans land. He's wanting to drop his arrow weight 30 grains to try and make up for speed lose 🤔 🤦♂️
You can't beat them. Check this out.

Do you square the ends of your arrows?
Issac Thomas
Yes - see high FOC arrow built insert tuning video.
@@RanchFairy Good stuff, its amazing the things that get overlooked when building arrows. I have run into factory cut arrows that were not square, gets frustrating when you cant count on the mfg. to get the job done right. But then again thats why we tinker with this stiff, because we like it.
Did you switch from feathers
Ryan Strand
I had one of my subs send me some q2ii fusions, the small ones. So I gave them a rip. For this particular video - you can write on them,
@@RanchFairy I'm trying to decide on an arrow. Leaning towards the RIP TKO with 60 grain outserts with a 100 grain Magnus was also thinking of goldtips any input appreciated
Ryan Strand
Draw weight / Draw length? What spine are you considering and 125 broadheads! Let’s do this man
@@RanchFairy 28½ draw 70# was going to shoot a 300 spine 29 inch arrow
300 spine will be fine up to 300 grains in the front. Come on man, jump over to the heavy side.
I understand everything except the numbers
Mr. Skeptical it just gives the arrow an identity
