  • In this Dare to Self Care episode, we have a dream guest of mine on the show today...ALEXANDRA GATER! We are talking about overcoming self doubt as an entrepreneur and aspiring UA-camr and how getting laid off from her dream job led to huge success. She's also giving us ALL the home decor and organization tips for tiny rental apartments! Tips and hacks on how to maximize your space and make your rental feel like a home with a tiny kitchen, tiny bathroom, tiny living room and more.
Before starting her UA-cam Channel, Alexandra was the Home Editor for Canada’s iconic women’s lifestyle magazine Chatelaine, where she created the UA-cam series The Home Primp, which launched her online career. Since then, she's connected with millions through her online home makeover series who are just like her-people living in rentals who still want those rentals to feel like home.

I’ve been through some challenging times during the last few years, and Alexandrea has brought joy to my life. I love her channel and her team. I’ve used her content as inspiration in my own home decor and organization. I’m so pleased to hear her back story.

I agree that by Alexandra doing the makeovers as a total gift, it gives her the freedom to have total control over the makeover, which is what must make it so fun for her. Having a vision and all sorts of great ideas, but then having your hands tied behind your back, and the client having the power to veto your ideas (or even some of your ideas) would be the ultimate killjoy! Because if you can’t create the whole vision, it might not work. And since the client can’t see inside her head, they just might not get where she is going.
On some of her makeovers, I found myself saying, “Oh, I don’t know if that’s gonna work. 😬” But when the project is all done, everything works together so well. You just have to wait to see the end product.
I hope she keeps having fun with this. It’s a lot of hard work, but it’s the fun that makes it worthwhile. 🌷

I relate to your show because the things you produce are doable to the average person with some skills. The show on Japandi really got me going, and I redid my bedroom using the tips you gave during the makeover. My place is almost done, and it is Asian-Craftsman as there is a close tie in to them.

It is so interesting to see how self motivated people become successful. Schools should feature young people who have created their professions and let them lecture the students to show what is possible for the future. One note of constructive criticism for you, try not to use the word “like” so often otherwise nice job.

So interesting hearing more about how her business works!
I wonder if going the tv route even makes sense for her. She has so much freedom on UA-cam and seems to have so much fun with her team.
Curious to see what her next steps are!

Love Alexandra! She was the first UA-cam channel I subscribed to. Lighting definitely important. At the time during the pandemic I was living in a small dark condo and with the isolation I was really struggling with depression. My current home has these awesome skylights which give so much natural light which is something she always talks about😊 thanks!
