    Just. WoW. ! ! I *finally* found you and am having such a blast watching you create. What I love about your videos is how quickly you make decisions and GO FOR IT! You are a true artist, experimenting, taking chances all along having that spark that keeps us "newbies" confident that some day we be might be 1/2 as good as you !

      Travelin' Toots1e, thank you! You are so right about having the courage to GO FOR IT! A quote from the book "Art and Fear" from David Bayles & Ted Orland, "What separates artists from ex-artists is that those who challenge their fears, continue; those who don't, quit. Each step in the artmaking process puts that issue to the test.” Stay with it, you are an artist!

I really appreciated that you kept the video portion regarding the prints that didn't work out for you as well. Do you think you could get a similar outcome with printer paper and craft paint? Thank you for sharing your process and creativity with us. It's inspiring to me. Have a great weekend.

    50% humidity is a nice day where I live. I like to say that it never rains here, it's more like the air condenses and then falls down lol. I have learned to adjust my techniques when the plate isn't cooperating.

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому +1

      Michelle, thank you for your question, it is a rubber spatula, just check that it is not too pliable and then again, not completely stiff. I will document my hunt for a new one, after six years, this one is showing some wear. It's a fantastic tool, in my opinion, SO much better than a brush which you must keep clean or it will be ruined. With the spatula you can just peel the dried matte medium off!

    I have a terrible time trying to use the gelli plate where I live. I can’t get the paper to not stick badly and tear. I live in The Gambia, west Africa. Its often 90+ humidity and very hot. Any suggestions on how to get it to work? I really love the gelli prints others are able to make.

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому

      Lisa, that's so hard! I'm thinking rice paper is not best for your conditions, but I can't make any knowledgeable recommendations yet...I would definitely condition my plate with mineral oil to see if that is part of the problem, then experiment with different papers and pigments, maybe more durable stock and heavy body acrylics instead of fluid. Stay tuned! If I discover the secret I'll definitely do a short video on it.

    • @lisaalaine
      @lisaalaine 2 роки тому

      @@VikkiReed Thank you! My friend also suggested putting the plate in the refrigerator for a bit before use to see if that helps. I’m determined to find a solution! When you say condition with mineral oil, I actually don’t know what that is exactly. If you explain it a bit more, maybe I could by a small bottle of it and bring it back home with me to try. We are in Scotland at the mo on vacation. Very difficult to find things you need in The Gambia.

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому +1

      @@lisaalaine Thank you for sharing that tip! I cover conditioning the plate in my Basics video, here's the link ua-cam.com/video/TarWhnNE3fw/v-deo.html. I also say (in that video) humidity is your friend, because in the desert where I live it is usually very dry, and when there is less than 10% humidity it is also a challenge to work with the Gelli Plate, it seems there is a "humidity sweet spot"!

    The matte medium is used to glue the collage pieces to the base print?

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому +1

      TINY CAT PANTS, (lol) yes, I use matte medium (Golden, but I think Liquitex is the same) to adhere collage pieces to the base print, to mixed media collage pieces on canvas, and to the birchwood panel on a project like this. thank you for your question! I like matte medium because it dries invisibly...

    When I lift my papers, I still always have a lot of paint on my plate. I can never get it off in a pull. I’ve tried using more paint, less paint, and it’s always the same. What am I doin wrong?

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому +1

      Candy, that is so frustrating! First, there is a "humidity window" in which gelli plate printing is optimized, not too humid, not too dry. Second, you may need to condition your plate, first remove all the (dry) paint with packing tape (don't leave the packing tape on, just use the tape to pull up the dried paint), then use some mineral oil, rub it in, and remove it with baby wipes. Third, what paint are you using? Heavy body, fluid acrylics and paints with a high level of binder (and low percentage of pigment) all react differently on the plate...Fourth, what paper are you using? Smoother and thinner papers make the pull so much easier, while paper with texture and a great deal of body (heavier weight) complicate things, at least for me. Finally, you aren't doing anything wrong, you are finding your way to what works. Believe me, we've all done it, you'll get there!

      @candyschultheis1530 2 роки тому

      @@VikkiReed thank you! I use golden paint, rice paper and printer paper. I will try conditioning my plate. But I think it’s the humidity. I live in Florida.

    • @VikkiReed
      @VikkiReed  2 роки тому +1

      @@candyschultheis1530 Yes! As I mention in this video, when the humidity is (was) above 50% I had a much harder time. I live in Arizona where the humidity is usually very low and if it's TOO dry, or if you have the air conditioning or fan blowing in your studio (or art space) that is problematic as well. Yes, condition your plate, I'm hoping for good results for you!
