  • Extreme cold temperatures have certainly hindered progress, however I did manage to finally start my wood pellet stove installation in my fiberglass trailer. My goal was a temporary method of using a wood stove in a small trailer like an Outback, Casita or Scamp which could be completely reversible when not needed. More to follow!

    They don't call him "Slim PoolNoodle" for nothin'. I like seeing the woodstove make a come back. The location he set it up makes sleeping in the bed a little more interesting. Slim, setting and using the stove is more of an art than a science is exactly correct. I have a Wiseway pellet stove in my house. I bought it in 2018 after a major power outage the winter before. It's taken me three seasons to learn how to tickle it's sweet spot but I finally found it. I now have it burning up to three days before having to clean it out. Trial and error is key to optimal performance. I love it now. It saved our bacon this season without Texas polar vortex. Our power cycled on/off here but we were very toasty with the stove heating the entire house. I have the ability to shut off the fuel supply from the hopper, so it can just burn itself out. Gravity feed without power is wonderful. The only way to go. Thanks for the videos! You are one brave soul. Be careful. Mechanical injury is what I fear for you being alone.

    I made a wood stove out of a six gallon travel trailer water heater I had salvaged . Reversed the inside tube the propane heater used so it became part of the chimney . 5 inch exhaust worked prefect. Used outside air to the fire box instead of sending heated inside air up the chimney . Just a short piece do an out down spout supplies the air , cut a square hole for fuel door , hammered it flat , and it fit prefect for the door , no glass , but I was more interested in heat , than a pretty flickering flame . . Three long J hooks made the legs ( three legs will always seat smooth , four legs seldom do ) . Anyway minus 24 c outside , but a toasty 25 c inside , with only a small flame . Still using branches for fuel from a snow storm we had four years ago . Free wood , free stove, free chimney , even the piece of down spout was free . I do have a fan beside the stove so the heat is spread around inside .

    There's something about the heat from a wood stove. It's like no other form of heat. It's for some reason more comforting than any other form of heat. Maybe it's just the character of the whole idea.

    • @wildbill23c
      @wildbill23c 3 роки тому +1

      That's why I have a wood stove in my house. I rarely use the propane forced air furnace. That and being on propane its more expensive than natural gas, so I try not to use it too much, other than in the mornings while showering & getting breakfast, then I build a fire in the wood stove that heats the house the rest of the day. I occasionally will cook on the wood stove as well, if I do stew, chili, chicken and noodles, etc. I'll use the wood stove to cook that stuff on. It works great, and provides a heat like nothing else can.

Idk, but it's interesting

    • @kebby8251
      @kebby8251 3 роки тому

      @@einsteinsdesigner876 Woodstock's generate a significant amount of radiant heat which is more tolerable at higher temperatures than a direct heat solution like a furnace which blows hot air and no radiant heat. People who grew up in homes with radiant water heaters love them as well despite how impractical they are in modern days.

    I have an Aliner in part because I liked your older videos concerning your old trailer.
    I researched small tent wood stoves and found the GStove made in Norway.
    I too, used a window in my Aliner to vent my Gstove by removing the screen and closing off the window with plywood. I held the plywood in place by installing pressure pieces which are connected via wing nuts and washers which basically pressure or squeeze the plywood into position. I found this superior to other methods I tried as it does not damage my Aliner - other that removing the screen.
    A word about the Gstove. I hunt whitetail deer in WI. Actually, I used to hut whitetail deer and now I tend our cabin's wood stove and see the younger hunters have warm food should the November weather in WI necessitate warming up by the stove for an hour or so.
    The reason I mention the above is during a recent check or our smoke flu I discovered the caustic nature of the wood smoke discharge had almost eaten through the elbow in our flu as it exited the cabin. Had this gone unnoticed we could have had a very bad outcome.
    Back to the Gstove. The Gstove is 100% stainless steel which is less impervious to corrosion due to creosote. I don't know the metal which composes your chimney but if it's not stainless steel - it presents a hazard.
    Regarding the insulation you installed for your stove exhaust pipe, the amount you can install is miniscule and won't do much regarding R-value. I simply have my sheet of plywood with less than perfect sizing for the window (decent gaps but not big enough to fall out of the window frame) and it doesn't matter in terms of the stove output.
    I've never been able to operate the stove without literally being "cooked-out" of my small Aliner. Any insulation I could install or setting up outside air becomes superfluous when the stove - using sticks, hardwood, softwood, dimensional lumber etc. can become so hot I need to open windows and open the door.
    I have used my stove for over two years during my winter camping outings in MN and found it more heat than I need.
    All this said, I enjoy your videos and laud your creative endeavors to heat your trailer. Based on my experience, I would purchase a 100% stainless steel stove from Gstove and let the winter winds and cold temps come because I'm ready.
    Dan

    Glad to see you've been able to bring the wood stove back. Looks good and thanks for sharing.
    Someone asked on a casual prepper FB page about auxiliary heating in a camper and possibly using a wood stove. I sent them the link for your 1st wood stove video in the A liner.
    I always look forward to watching your videos when they come on.
    I'm 62 and yearn for the days when I camped. Maybe soon!

    Nicely done, Slim might think about doing some kind of bracing to make the outside stack less prone to move in windy conditions that's removable and several ideas come to mind inspired by the collar/legs its rooftop kin use. Indeed a pair of hinged legs riveted to a pipe connector made for its diameter would be ideal since the stack could either slide thru it as high as desired or be affixed at that point so it's legs could slot or use a quick connect of some sort to lock its ends to the plywood insert. Since a Triangle is the most rigid of geometric shapes the legs will brace in much the same way and I suspect he might use a retractable poles like he's done before in some fashion like before if it needs to be more resistant to wind. One way to keep an engine in extreme temperatures to be able to start of course is to turn it over every few hours and let it run but it's better to stay safe since at 20-30 below zero it might be least of your problems getting away from where you parked for a night or just a few hours.

    I would say that looks like a much better arrangement for the wood stove than in the old trailer. It looks like it came with the trailer. Good work Slim!

    Yes! Was wondering where your wood stove was! It worked so well with your Aliner that I figured you'd find a way to make it work in your new trailer.

    Welcome home, Slim! You've been missed. I'm not surprised your wood stove has returned. It served you well in Abner. Looks like you've found a good way to anchor and vent it. Looking forward to your trials.
