Camper Wood Stove Experiment Pt 3: Feeling the Heat!

- In the final part of the trilogy on my experiment in put a pellet wood stove in a fiberglass eggshell camper, I actually test it out in the frozen wilds of a Canadian winter. Although it provided lots of heat, it also had a few challenges!

Hi Slim, I'm an adrenaline junkie living in a van in NYC. Your calm demeanour and peaceful state of mind is what keeps my mind calm when I'm "resting".
Thanks for the many peaceful nights my friend.
I have cut the wood and heated my home with wood for 46 years and really appreciate Slims very thorough and thoughtful pellet stove installation, but not giving it a thought for my small camper. My wife would probably leave me. The scene of Slim barreling through the snow and his camper doing a power slide made me gasp. This is why I have been coming here for over three years now. Way to go O Guru.
awesome Pablo!
That was sweet he's an animal dude the way he pulled up in there
Evil Knievel Slim Backwoods MADMAX Snowplow devil!
Does he carry snow chains/cables? We run studded tires in addition to carrying chains/cables
I've wood heated for 40 years, first was a Sotz Barrel kit in my mom's garage to hustle washing cars in winter.
When you drove your trailer off that road I thought I heard a "yahoooo!" 🤣
Ya that was probably unnecessary lol I've seen a couple vids where I was like whoa slow down slim haha gonna crater that trailer! But, he doesn't want to get stuck

Slim likes to have fun
Yes, and pretty sure he was drifting that bad boy too!
Slim, if you're ever in distress upload a video WITHOUT a pool noodle and we'll know you're being held hostage :)
Bahahaha!!!!
Hahahha. Man I really needed that laugh today thanks. Best comment ever!

😂😂😂😂
😆 🤣 🤣 u made my day
I am so glad you explained the dangers of a wood stove
For sure. A wood stove in a camper seems incredibly dangerous. A diesel heater would be a much better and more efficient option.
@@redstone5149 True, but it also requires electricity.
@@rolliebca ...Slim has a Jackery.
I've said it before, I'm sure I'll say it again, your ingenuity and tenacity in problem solving with no formal training is exemplary. There's no limits to what you can achieve. 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🙏🏼

I think there needs to be a TV show about Canadian winter campers. The hardy, friendly folks of the north!
Today's SP episode had me remembering my youth. For a while now, I have I was thinking about Slim's great style of narration and finally it dawned on me who else from the past had a very similar, calm demeanor and easygoing style when on camera. Anyone else remember Marlin Perkins on the original Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom? Slim, we love the way you " deliver the goods" and leave us smiling and happy after each adventure you share.
Yes! And Marty Stouffer’s Wild America.
Yes, I remember him well. Watched many an episode. You're right, Slim's presentation is very similar.
Damn, you're right. Slim sounds a lot like Marlin Perkins. Minus the alligators.
Well, crickey mate at least he isn't going to go pick on someone or thing and make it mad.
I remember, loved that show.
Great video. I keep a spare set of enough clothes in my tow vehicle in case the various possible sources of a fire in my rig start one at 2:00 a.m. Cold and exposure are a more serious threat to people than excess warming. I keep my important docs/wallet/etc in a fire bag to grab on the way out.
Slim's rules of winter camping are also good rules of life in general. Good to see you. Have fun and be safe out there.
The one thing that I never regretted was keeping a garden spade in my car in the winter. It SEEMS terrible for shoveling snow, but digging a car out of compacted and heavy snow, there's nothing better in the world for that.
I do the same. Haven't had to use it to dig myself out but nice to have just in case. Mine doesn't have a regular length handle on it though, it has a shorter handle with a d-handle on the end of it...great for digging, but yet a bit more compact, still a full size spade just shorter handle. I carry an axe, and a mattock as well in my camp box that stays in the truck all the time.
Those foldable camping shovels are well suited, as well. The metal ones, kind of military style, that can lock into a "hoe" position. You can reach under and chip away at the compacted snow under your car from the side, then. I've lived in deep snow territory for about 30 years now, I won't go anywhere without one.
I like flat steel w/ long handle or aluminum...
It's soothing, relaxing to watch Slim's presentations. His thougtfulness and creativity makes some things look easy.👍👍
Hey Slim! I've been "SP deprived' for 5 months now as my husband and I have been staying in our off grid, remote northern cabin (think Yukon) since the end of September and don't have internet there, and spotty cell service. I'm going to enjoy catching up. So much of what we have learned in the last 20 years of cabin life has rolled over into our RV life. I am so tempted to install a Cubic Mini Woodstove in my little motorhome this spring, and sure appreciate the info in your woodstove videos. Thanks for sharing!-Susan
Thought you were going to go over as you made that turn.!!!
I chuckled at his give er hard approach, no second thoughts !

Hilarious!
Nice to see you back doing what you like to do and what we the viewers like to see. 👍
Slim, I must say, you are a total Badass! You are definitely “the man” in my book. I love the disclaimer for “common senseably challenged “ people. Much love from Raeford North Carolina, USA. It’s like 75 here. The only snow we see is on tv for the most part.
I trust your judgement Slim. I'd try a mini stove for less heat but I understand your are working with what you have for this test. Pioneers risked danger in their cabins with open fireplaces. You are a pioneer of sorts with this.
I’m glad you got a little break from the polar vortex. I loved the footage of the water running under and around the ice. Thanks Slim!
You can't imagine how much I enjoy your videos. I love your style and the pictures are magnificent, one can see how much effort you put in a a lot of shots, setting the camera, shooting and then walking back to fetch the camera, I guess. A big thank you from Germany
It definitely gets "cold" in Germany.
Your nature shots & sounds never disappoint.
I love the tenor and tone of your videos
They are like mini Canadian adventures while experimenting with new and different heating systems.
Your stove is seriously good. The scenery and videography is excellent. Thanks, Slim. I think you have a winner. Texas
Nice evening picture of the camper glow. Love the stove! I heated a home with wood for over ten years. Wonderful heat, but a lot of work.
I always knew, with Slim camping out in the middle of nowhere so often, that he must “pack heat” for safety.....
...and he does! He packs a mini pellet stove!
Packing "heat" I get; others may not.
I am a native Floridian 58 years old I have experienced some cold weather being an over the road truck driver but the coldest I have been was is Bloomington Illinois which was minus 10 degrees ferinheight once my body felt that cold air my teeth chattered for 3 solid hours.Im glad there's people like you who gets out there and enjoys it.

Slim, you demonstrate time and again just what a masterful innovator/adapter you are. Getting to see the clever and practical ideas you incorporate into your camping outfit measurably enhances this viewer's enjoyment of your channel. It is particularly pleasing to note that your impressive ammo box stove has been successfully incorporated into your Trillium Out Back winter camping setup. Also, when you were making your morning coffee, I noticed that it was not too strong, as you were able to cut it with a knife. ;^)
I love it.. great stuff Slim.. 😎👍🏼☕️ 🤣🤣🤣
Lol
I would say that's a pretty efficient stove for an old ammo can! Thanks for a another great one slim!
That's what I thought it was! Lol, thank's for confirming.
Man camping in the winter is a pain enough but I just wanted to say how much we appreciate you taking the extra effort to set up all the camera shots and film this for us!! I’m not crazy enough to go winter camping yet but these videos are the best!
Friendly preamble...lol.
Unfortunately necessary 🤪

It would be interesting to take a thermal image of your camper from the outside to see where it's hot and cold.
Well since it's all fiberglass and polymers... The thinnest section would be the area with the biggest heat loss. Windows, roof panel, etc.
But, I hope someone makes this thermal vision video, it would be interesting and a first! :)
Great video
that does actually sound cool as hell
@@BradleyTurmel
cool as hell lol!
Will you please sell me one
You have an eye for the mechanical and the magical!
What a great trip. Camper Stove works perfectly, waking up to a sunny winter day with beautiful nature. Looks like a really good day.
Have you ever considered installing a winch on the vehicle ones that are installed on hitch or in front when your alone and stuck could be a problem. Great video!
Funny with the disclaimer, but I guess it needs to be said! I think everybody have common sense, but some people never got/get the chance to use it.
Lovely nature, and that happy little river!
For those people that just loooove to point out all the "wrongdoings" and things "not to code" even though it's perfectly safe if you have common sense. For those people they can click on their gas furnace and blissfully ignore the dangers that poses.
@Sven Larsson Yes, common sense is rarer than hen's teeth...
And thst's why I wrote that some (a lot?) never used their common sense. I was thinking of people that believe that one should follow leaders and guidelines only, and not think if it's reasonable. And the other is people not knowing their own limitations.
And of course, one can say that if a person have the ability for common sense but cannot use it, then they don't have it...
I think my point was that I wish more people to cultivate their common sense, but I guess it's hard if you never get any new input/feedback.
(English's not my first language)
Awesome disclaimer. Too funny but also serious! 🤣😱
The power slide was cool. Wood stoves are wonderful. I have been enjoying these videos ashamedly from the comfort of my really comfortable recliner, and proudly keeping warm by the heat of my old pot-belly woodstove with wood I cut. Besides the camp-aspect of Slim's work, I especially like the photography and the regional/cultural/educational parts of these videos. Keep up the great work!
Beautiful. And thank you for taking me camping with you. 😊👏👏
I love your shows very much. The landscape and photography are stunning. The ideas you come up with are fascinating to me. And, I would never second guess you. You are an expert at planning and testing your ideas and it’s so fun to watch your process. And to top it off, you have an awesome sense of humor. Thank you for sharing these experiences with us.
The disclaimer was great and wisdom for words to live by good video
Slim, the sound of your stove and fan running with no other sounds is heavenly!!
Although I'll never go camping like you do, I appreciate the valuable education. I've always said Never turn down an opportunity to learn, you never know where / when the knowledge will be handy.
Great disclaimer because there's not a lot of common sense going around today. Love your videos. ❤👍
Dude what a awesome fun time you have. Thanks for letting us tag a long. 👍
Not only is slim’s video fun and interesting to watch. It’s filled with knowledge!
Loving the content, be safe slim!!
27:35 how fascinating... as soon as you hear the vent close you also see the fire change instantly.
1:32 Epic drift.
Great demonstration using the roof vent to create a negative pressure and show just what can happen. Let’s hope Spring will be here soon!
I look forward to your wood stove videos, awesome setup 👌
Just when you pull into your spot, and turned into the trees, it was so beautiful, like a painting. Great video!
Those glorious days after the vortex! 🌞 ❤️ Enjoy!
UA-cam has been reading my Google research on woodburners for campers.....and I am very glad it did - this video was PERFECT. I have no experience with wood stoves and plan to live fulltime in my camper - and we have LOTS of wind here in New Zealand. Thanks for making and posting this video.
Used to have that same sleeping bag (canadian tire), super warm and comfortable....take care slim.
I always stay around for your videos. You have taught me a lot and brought me to many beautiful places that I may never have the chance to see. I love your videos.
I watch a lot of camper, van-life, etc style videos. I've looked forward to watching yours the most when I see a new video uploaded. Always great content. Nicely filmed and edited. One of the most enjoyable channels around this genre on the 'Tube'. Just dropping a note to say thanks! Keep it up. Looking forward to the next one, and the one after that.
Slim and Adventure Van Man are the two best of this genre of UA-cam videos.
Hi slim, after dozens of videos I found yours. Thanks for being an inspiration. I was happy to see your videos in the Chiracua's and mogollon rim. That where I grew up tent camping 40 years ago! My daughter and I (5 years old) have been binge watching your adventures and we're thinking about making our own channel about Dad and daughter adventures. If you watch PBS in Az... You are the David Yetman (Desert Speaks) of rv camping. We appreciate you!!!! Love the humor, cinematography, cooking and love of nature.
Thanks Jason. I hope you and your daughter have many wonderful camping adventures! SP
Great video Slim. Like that you are careful to warn folks of the dangers yet your adventurous side always comes out. Great shots of getting into camp, wow!!
Woooow that was quite the driving to get to your camp site. I thought you were going to roll the trailer.
Be careful of the baked beans they can backfire.
Helps heat the trailer! 🤣

Good one!
Great 3 parts series. It felt as if we spent this time together as you are a true & great mentor to us. Many thanks. Looking forward to OUR new adventures 🌌🍺
I love the disclaimers. You are certainly right about going to a warmer climate not to deal with the heating situation. I am a tent camper in Florida i don't need a heat source but it does get uncomfortable in the summer.
Thanks again for such an informative yet enjoyable video. I felt so cozy by your stove.

I LOVED this little stove adventure, Mr. Slim.
Another video to love! So many aspects of this one are stellar! My favorite of all has to be renaming Dennis Hopper to Dennis the Menace - LOL, such entertainment!
Really appreciate the follow up on the Fat 50 stove, such a great build and build series. Your filming and documenting skills are first rate in my book.
So many great comments too, I read at least 200 of them. Many shed light on areas I haven't considered yet - brings me to one of my 3 favorite life lessons, you don't know, what you don't know.
Looking forward to your next video SP - I know, you've created an insatiable "appetite" in your subscribers, and no amount of "bad" cooking is going to detract us from wanting more!
Stunning scenery! Another awesome video but you’re scaring me with your sleeping bag that close to the stove. I hope you’re not a restless sleeper. Take care, Slim!
Disclaimer Watching these videos may provide entertainment, chuckles and thoughts something like "I wouldn't do it like that" lol
LOLOLOL Yeah! I use to winter camp too. BUT mine was done in tents. I'm older now and stay home and inside and much warmer nowdays!
Glad to see you still going strong, stay warm and be safe.
Excellent safety video Slim! Very well done
I like your stove. I have experimented with many stove designs primarily for use in ice huts tho I now have built a massive brick stove in my home using the principles learned. Some suggestions; 1) make a wind vane cap for your chimney, 2) use a "T" where you use an elbow on your outside chimney, you can cap the bottom of it if you want and drill some holes to allow drainage or just leave it open. Both of these will help with back draft problems. 3) wrap your external chimney in another piece of pipe of the same diameter, or larger if you want to insulate it with say mineral wool, and this will help with your creosote problems as it will help keep the flue gasses warm. Most of my stoves were based on the rocket stove principle such that fresh air intake is thu the hopper, not thru the door. I don't remember how well this worked with pellets but it should, as gasifiers use the same principle. Your poke stick works well, a shaker might work better. oh, and I assemble my chimneys opposit to yours such that all drainage stays in the flu, this does not hurt and I have yet to notice smoke leaking from the joints. Hope you find something useful here. Thanks for your chronicles, I do enjoy them. Happy travels pilgrim.
Great video Slim. I think the stove is a great idea for you. It is safe or let’s say it’s SlimSafe. Hahahahaha Stay warm buddy. ❤️🇨🇦❤️ Cheers!!!
Thank you for the information. Glad you enjoy the frigid weather and scenery.

Great emergency demo slim. I hope people listen to your warnings. This experimentation still requires careful observation and common sense. Thank you.
Great video, the mountains are beautiful. Have you ever gone winter camping on the BC coast?
Absolutely love your videos Slim!! Thanks for sharing!!!
You are too funny with the opening:” you will die” concerns. I am so amazed at how you tuck yourself into the woods. I have seen other videos of using wood stoves within even a small type of SUV with a young lady in Japan. She lowered her window and a setup with wood that holds the “stove pipe” to vent out. It was amazing to see her put wood in it. OF course, this was something she did while awake and then had an electric blanket to another source. Amazing to see each of you that travel or live off the grid. Wow it heated up fairly quicly. Seems that you got toasty really quick! Now you can boil water for tea/coffee or even cook on it. Great work.
Your videography Skills are extraordinary. How do you do the ones when you are taking the camper down and those evening shots while the camper lights go out.. fantastic!!
Perfect intro Disclaimer! Love other's comments on that disclaimer. Convinced me that I will not be putting a pellet stove in my Scamp. Nor trying any of Slim's cooking recipes......
Cozy AND Lethal.
Got it!
Thanks for the post.
A couple of weeks ago, we had a winter storm, we had mostly freezing rain, the power went out, so we got to camp at home. The natural gas fireplace kept us warm, and the natural gas stove helped keep us fed and sufficiently hydrated with coffee and tea. We did realize the need to either grind coffee ahead of time, or pick up a hand grinder. We went outside and loaded up a bowl with ice to keep food cold in the refrigerator. We had to rough it, because the power was off long enough to run the call towers out of battery power. Oh, the humanity! We went 3 days without power, but there are some who haven't had their power restored yet.
Great video. Tongue & cheek disclaimer was hilarious! Appreciate the work that went into all the heating options. 😊
The ole wood stove is doing a great job! I liked the video of the creek or river. Looked so clear under the ice and the water was moving fast. Stay safe out there Slim.
I am glad i found you. I mean I have watched your whole library and have been keeping up. I really enjoy the wood stove videos even though I opt for your #4 camping in warmer climates. I live in AZ and have no want to camp in the Pacific North Wet, but I sure do enjoy watching you guys do it. It is really pretty and serene. My favorite is your answers to just about everything. Your budget fixes are super fun. Keep it up! Thanks for the videos.
I grew up sawing and chopping wood for fires ~ the concept that you can create this much heat from 2 gallons of pellets is still so foriegn to me 🤔🔥⚡🌐😲
I really appreciate all the thought you put into your design @Slim Potatohead ~ It has inspired me to experiment with my resources to possibly create pellet hopper systems for my various stoves 🤓⚡🌐🤠🔥👍
I totally love your videos!! The narration is just perfect! Thank you Slim.
