    Hi Noel, very informative - thank you. A question regarding sizing up boards in general. I like how you mention at the end of reviews 'who is this board for'. Of course an intermediate or expert level is also dependant on age/weight etc. Some boards do not size up well, often because they have a wide nose and in bigger dimensions, these can catch, (depending on contour and rails of course). So wondering if you might consider as part of a recommendation mentioning whether the board in your opinion, is one that is suitable to size up (if you're an intermediate, older or both etc). Thanks again.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Рік тому +7

      I think most boards that have this type of hybrid outline are prone to catching in the nose area if you do not surf them heavily off the tail. With that being said I often have these hybrid outline type boards even catch on me when I surf them too. I usually mention that in every review on boards that have a wider nose. Sizing up on these types of boards will even make them more prone to catching in the nose area and my thoughts on that are choose boards like the Rocket Wide Squash tail to be your small wave performance board. These types of small wave boards size up a little better as the have more of a performance outline with a pulled in nose.

    Bobby likes Emma Wood, that's why he uses the double-diamond muscle shark design. Those waves can be pretty reliable, surging up from deep channels into shallow reef and sand banks year-round. You have to pay to play in Ventura and it reflects through all their style(s) and performance

    • @surfnshowreviews7777

      BQ is more versatile in wave size at 1-6’ surf. The BQ is faster and offers more drive and better in the pocket.
      The Mashup feels looser underfoot and has good speed but best in 1-3’ surf.

      Good comparison... the PM is epic too but I think the BQ offers a bit more hold and drive. The BQ might be a tad faster down the line too. The PM is great because you can ride it as a Thruster, Twin + Trailer and I think Quad too. Some folks are not Quad guys... just saying.

      Cheers!! The BQ and BV2 is a great comparison. Both boards are sick. The BV2 might carry a little more speed down the line as a Twin + Trailer and grovel better in small mushy surf do to its speed. The BQ seems to surf top to bottom a little better… tighter turns in the pocket.As a 1 board quiver I would go BQ… as a Groveler I would go BV2.

    Ni Noel, excellent review. Just have a question: how would you compare it with the Rocket Wide ? I am planning to by one, but looking to this review it makes me think what can the best option for smaller surf, to replace my NB2. (for bigger days I am using the NB3). Thanks and hope you are improving well with your injury.

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Рік тому +5

      The BQ will shred 1-2’ surf better compared to the RW or NB2 and NB3. The BQ is shorter so it will fit in tighter transitions faster and it will easier to gain speed quickly because it’s shorter in smaller surf. As the waves get bigger the BQ performs very well but the extra rail line on the RW and NB3 will offer more drawn out turns and a bit more stability on rail.

      The Seaside feels like a cruiser compared to the BQ. You have to remember that the Seaside is a Performance Fish and the BQ is a Performance groveler. The Seaside surfs more down the line and seems to attack the lip more diagonal and carve more. The BQ offers excellent down the line speed with good pivot in the pocket to draw more progressive lines.

      I have both the UJ and BQ, I ride the UJ only as a quad and find it's definitely better in 1-2ft than the BQ. It seems the BQ wants more steeper waves, not such a good groveller as UJ. I think BQ has more tail rocker, so this could be the reason.

    Great review of the Bobby Quad. I like how you went over board construction at the end of the review but wanted to ask what’re your thoughts about getting the Bobby Quad in varial foam? I will surf this board as my everyday daily rider but mainly surfing weekends in the mornings so it’s usually clean to a slight bump on the water. I surf in HB down to Trails in waves from 1-6 ft. Let me know what you think yeew

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Рік тому +1

      I like the Varial foam with a polyester resin… excellent pop and it goes good with a little texture too. I tried their foam with epoxy resin years ago and the board felt stiff and lifeless through turns. It was more durable (less presidents) but didn’t have that pop. They do infused glassing now so all that might have changed with epoxy resin. I highly recommend calling the folks at Varial and getting your BQ dialed before you order it online.

    Noel,
    With volume being perceived as the most important dimension I feel as if it is still misunderstood to a degree. For instance, I find too much volume can keep a surfer from progressing their skills all for the sake of stability and paddle-ability; which isn't necessarily the case. I think surfers should constantly be seeking their lower limits of volume in order to progress.
    With that said.....with your current weight of 172 lbs., did you find yourself wanting less volume, or your pre-surgery volume, when riding the Bobby quad?

    • @surfnshowreviews7777
      @surfnshowreviews7777  Рік тому +2

      I agree with most of your comment... I like to push the lower end of my volume to keep my equipment responsive and continue to progress my surfing. My volume on this Bobby Quad at 27.4L is a bit due to my weight increase of 7-8lbs from my hip replacement surgery. I say add 1L more or 1L less for every 8-10lbs you loose or gain.

      Both boards Grovel very well… I think the BQ is more versatile and shreds average waves better. The UJ might carry a little more down the line but the speed between these two models is pretty close. One thing to consider is the UJ gives you fin set up options like Thruster, Quad, and Twin + Trailer and you only have Quad option on the BQ. Some surfers are not Quad guys… just saying.

As the Torq feels too dead and heavy I wish to switch it to a Groveler to work on my performance in smaller waves. At start I looked at the CI Pod Mod, then friends told me the Lost Puddle Jumper HP is the best, and now I see the BQ. Both boards are really fun to shred and I would have a hard time choosing between the two.... I would just have both in my quiver. I find that most surfers would say the BQ is easier to shred and more user friendly. On the other hand I have friends that grew up surfing HPSB Thrusters and Grovelers like the BQ and only ride Twin Fins now.... and a bunch of them swear by the Fish Beard.
      In the end.. whatever you personally like more Quads or Twin Fins better should help you decide as you cannot go wrong with either in my opinion. Just make sure you get the right Twin Fins for the Fishbeard if you want it to draw high performance lines.
