Your breakdown of the fins for this board could not be better. I felt the exact same thing surfing 4-6ft surf this weekend. Quad was the way to way to go on the smaller waves, but once it got head high the tail felt a little to lose as a quad. Based on it's liveliness, I just didn't have the confidence that it would hold if I want to do a powerful bottom turn and snap off the top in those conditions. I opted to just race down the line since I couldn't trust it. I got out and put in a large AM thruster set with a F8 center fin and the tail felt way more predictable and reliable in head high and above waves. I was able to push hard through my turns with confidence and the board performed predictably and beautifully. Thanks again for all the hard work you do making these reviews. They are epic. I know it's a labor of love, but its still work haha.
    Cheers,
    Ben

I had a 5’2” Seaside and loved it but I also had a 5’2” Classic Fish shape and I love both these boards but I sold my seaside to get the mashup and wow! I absolutely am loving the mashup as it has that speed and ease of catching waves similar to my fish style boards but I can implement some more up and down performance into my surfing and I found the board really helps yah dig those rails in on a turn and can get tight quick snaps in that head high and below wave size. I haven’t tried it in anything bigger yet but looking forward to trying as a 2+1 stabiliser after this review as I have just been riding my H4 fin thruster setup which has been super fast and responsive. Solid board I love it!

This board is highly recommended!.... This past week i had a board consultation with Noel.
He helped me to dial my liter range and also helped me to decide on which board to get so i can progress with my surfing.
Although it was not cheap, the consultation ended up saving me money so i won't buy the wrong board and spend money on something i don't need.
Noel recommended me on the Mashup and i was able to get it this week and surfed it today. I have to say that it was spot on!
The size, the liters, the fins everything worked perfect(!) for me and i caught plenty of waves and had a LOT of fun on this board.
Personally, I would highly recommend having a consultation with Noel if you can afford it - it will save you a lot of money (in the long run) and you'll be able to get the right surfboard for you.
    Thank you Noel!

I am 150 pounds and I rode the 5’4” mashup and I felt like it was a little too wide and big for me. It has a lot of foam so it catches waves super easy! But did not feel like a board that I would want to ride often. I think this would be good for people that like fish style boards.

Love the channel, but there is room for one element that would greatly improve the relevance of your reviews to most of your subscribers. Right now, you test boards at Trestles and sometimes a wave pool. 99% of your viewers are surfing average beach break on most days. It would be great if you would add footage and and assessment of the board’s performance in everyday waves to the existing format. Then we would be able to see how it flows in optimal surf, but also how it realistically goes in everyday surf. It would be hugely helpful. Thanks for considering!

      @rjcplus9 2 роки тому +2

spoke to Dan Mann at a FW demo day…he said initial production and team rider boards had the plugs to side bcz it would prevent rip-outs more bcz more foam.
but newer production we’re changed to center based on feedback, some goofys didn’t like it on the left, but also, some ppl had to cutout chunks of their traction pad. Also since Mashup is a shallow swallow, the plug could be placed up more + it’s for more smaller weaker waves-rip-safe.

The RW out performs the Mashup and BV2 in 3-6' surf. I highly recommend you go to our website www.surfnshow.com and look at the star ratings of these boards so you can compare them side by side.

Great review on the Mashup Noel. You pretty much nailed it. I’m riding the 5’9 which, as mentioned in another comment, has a subtle but distinctly different line to the shorter ones. It’s great and fun and held well in sucky beach breaks. I must admit I prefer my Fishbeard in similar waves - but it’s still very good. It probably has a lot to do with the helium construction which is very different to PU. Sometimes better (catching waves), sometimes not (rail work).
Looking forward to a review of the CI Free Scrubber. That looks like a lot of fun. Also seems like a good compliment/alternative to Fishbeard. Sort of that same but different category.

    G'day Noel.
After about 8 years away from surfing following lower back surgery, I have returned to the sport I love since starting at age 10. I've started back on HI Mid 6 boards, a 7'0'" (40 litres) and 7'6" (48 litres) to get up onto waves quicker, as I'm a bit slower to pop-up now, and getting older haha. I'm really loving the 7'6". I am 55 years of age, 5'11" tall and weigh 180-185lbs. I want to add a shorter board to my quiver. I am tossing up between the Mashup and the Dominator 2.0. Although starting over again, I would rate myself now as intermediate, but need a little extra foam to get on waves quicker. I generally surf beach breaks anywhere from knee to head high. Which of the 2 boards would you recommend? I have ruled out the Seaside as a 3rd option because I would like the option of having tri or quad set-up. Also, I am considering the Revo as an outside 4th option contender. Interested in your thoughts. Your reviews are awesome by the way. Very informative and based on extensive experience in the water.
    Cheers, Marty

They are G10 fiberglass offering consistency and predictability. Not to much flex and not to stiff.
Flexy fins offer pop but not constant through turns. The tips flex out on my and cause the board to bog on big rail turns. I prefer G10 fiberglass or Carbon fins for the consistency and predictability.

Has anyone else felt the Mashup is a little harder to put on rail due to its width even though its shorter? In some of the youtube videos it seems the board stays flatter during turns for most people especially frontside compared to say a CI Rocket Wide board. I'm 5'9 160 lbs and with the 5'4 Mashup with stock dimensions 27.1 L volume, AM twin fin+trailer setup and I feel like my turns are a bit flatter especially on more down the line waves but maybe I'm doing something wrong. I also have the 5'5 Rocket wide with stock dimensions 25.8 L volume and Roberts large raked tri-fins and feel I can put it on rail way easier. The major difference I feel between the two is on a smaller really clean day the Mashup seems to glide into a weaker wave way easier where as I may have missed that wave entirely with the rocket wide. I'm debating whether to keep the Rocket wide or the Mashup buy maybe I need more time on the Mashup (only three sessions on it) hmmm.

So you think the Mashup and Astro Pop are comparable boards? In other words, is the Mashup competing directly with the Astro Pop or are they boards for slightly different conditions?
I also noticed that you don't give Pyzel boards the best score in durability (2.5 stars for the Pyzalien, 3.5 for the Astro Pop). Given that, on the other hand, Firewire boards are probably among the best built, most durable boards, what construction would you recommend in Pyzel that at least comes close to that of FW (possibly excluding black arts technology as it's probably 500$ more expensive on average that a FW helium construction)?

@@dlangpap Mashup might offer a bit more performance top to bottom compared to the AP. The AP is more of a Groveler Performance Fish like the Seaside. The AP out performs the Seaside in the pocket as a performance fish.
Pretty much all PU/Poly, PU/Epoxy Resin, EPS/Epoxy constructions are similar in durability to me. PU/Poly with team light glassing is NOT durable at all…. It’s pretty bad actually. JS uses Burford blanks out of Aus for their PU/Poly boards are next level durable compared to anything here in the US.
Firewire is the most durable for pressure dents, then Datk Arts and Varial Foam with Epoxy Resin. Varial Foam with Epoxy resin doesn’t load or flex very well from what I remember but no pressure dents in 4 sessions. Varial foam started doing infused glassing so they might be better now. XTR is also next level Construction that offers better durability compared to PU and most other EPS/Epoxy builds.
