Thank you, yeah Twins for the wins. I appreciate the comment. I agree with you too. The board can do the best work when it is not handicapped with the wrong fins 🙌
Great comparison. I ride twins almost exclusively and finding the right fin for a board can be magic. I've been doing all these comparisons in my head, so it's nice to see you putting it all in one video. Thanks.
Hey there! Such a helpful video. I currently have a set of bmt’s in a sjs channel bottom 6’8”. Looking for something with a bit more pivot. What would you recommend?
I have the same board and I prefer the NVS Taylor Knox on that board. instagram.com/p/C0iSxWeyr1Z/ It also surfs well with the G10 SOAR MMBT instagram.com/p/DBFqmoSS1s3/?img_index=1 both of these have more upright profiles and the tail on that board is quite narrow and it has channels so you will be ok
Great content! I agree twins are good but twinzer fins better. Shame you don’t have any fcs tins. I am am looking at the performer twin fcs2 since I’m 65kg and 167cm tall. Oh and I have two boards as twinzer’s and it’s the best of both the twin and tri..the happy medium of the two.
I think you are right! Twinzers are 🔥. I have tried one and loved it. Ever since I used the Kai quads Im sold on the canard setup. I'd like to try a Lovelace FM 7 8 and a Panda Shiitake next
Hi thanks for the video it’s really illustrating! May I ask you what type of fin my wife needs for a 5’5” classic EPX twinie? She is 1,56m and 50kg! We are a bit lost 😅
Hey its going to be a small size fin and the tail type (width between fins) is going to determine how much keel you want. Please check this video for more twin fin types: ua-cam.com/video/em4f3DtEyEg/v-deo.html
Yes I have tried both. The Endorfins felt too small and too light for me in a Firewire Mashup. The Ho Stevie keels had a plasticky feel and were a bit too flexlible for my size. They are very low price and would be fine for a small / light rider.
Thanks a lot for the amazing review! If you could help me out, do you think the CF Mikey february would be a good fit for a Fish 6.0", I am 1,69cm and 51 kg. Thanks!
Hello thank you ! Yes the CF Mikey will work for you in small to medium waves and it really suits a fish.. If you want to surf in slightly bigger waves for your weight maybe go slightly smaller to something like the NVS ONO keel in G10
Hey there. 🤙 Awesome info here. I was hoping to get a recommendation if you could. I have a 5’6” Christensen lane splitter. I use the Christensen twins. They are insane for 2-4 ft. When it’s gets bigger and hollow, not so much. I’m 5’9”, 180lbs. And more heavy footed type. Any recommendations? By the way, I live in New Jersey to give you an idea of the type of waves we get when it’s solid. Thanks!
Great content! Quick Question, have a 7.0ft midlength(for me) twin with a swallow tail. Was looking at the Mickey February’s. I’m 176cm & 72kg’s. Riding 1-3foot with it. Do you think they will work?
Which one should I try in my 5’5 lightbender I weigh 72kgs. Had Asher uprights and didn’t like how much it pivoted and didn’t like the feel of it. I’m used to keels. Currently riding vampirate hybrid keels in it
Pretty sure the fin boxes are more forward on the Jim Banks, which would explain why it gets too loose with some fins. Those hooker fins extend way back
The boxes are 10 3/8 from the tail on my Jim Banks however and I have plenty of other boards with similar box placement that don't slide. Some have channels like my Fiji ( 10 1/2) and SJS Twin Pin (10 5/8 ) and they can both handle uprights. Usually the more forward you go with the box the more uprights are preferable. I'm pretty sure the low stringer and aggressive concaves within vee are contributing to the slide by deflecting plenty of water away from the centre of the board. I love the board and it needs a longer keel base to be happy.
I have a question 🙋♂️. I have the MR California Twin with MRs. I’d like to give the board more drive and stability, and take away some pivot and looseness. What fcs fins would help with that?
I'm a 50 year old beginner intermediate that surfs for almost 8 years. I'm 5.9 and 77kg, i ride a firewire addvance 7'2 61.9 liters. I'm using the machado keel v1. My goal is to have an easy and solid drop and surf well down the line. Would you kindly tell me what should be the best keel for me?
the tail on that board is fairly pulled in and you are a medium weight so you won't need too much fin. Cn you tell me the fin setup of your board? Is it a quad?
@@blinksurf it's a rob machado twin keel, the blue one 1st version. As said i just want to have a fin that allows me to have easy take-off and its fast enough for down the line surfing.
@@blinksurf thank you so much, I'll try the BMT. just one final question. Does this board perform better as a quad? Should i also try a quad? What fin set you recommend for me?
@@Cif74 'better' is subjective. As a quad with medium fins it will perform reliably. If you want a different feel Twins can bring it into a different style of surfing. The thing to check is how far from the tail the fin boxes are. Anything past 11 inches starts to make it less likely to work as a twin.
Random twin fin question re leg ropes. My current board has the legrope plug slightly off centre. The only problem is that the rail saver doesn’t reach to the other side of the board. The swivel (hard plastic part) hits on the opposite side of the swallow tail. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!
Now that you mention it, that is something I have experienced as well. Some of my fish have the leash plug in the middle and some on the heel side and some on the toe side. The plug position makes a difference. I like it on the toe side. because it mostly hangs out not across. Maybe you can pad part of the swivel with some gaff tape.
Future boxes suck for twins because the box design is comparatively long/narrow and is prone to either twisting or rolling over in the blank when subjected to heavy lateral loads during a turn. Even for a regular thruster, under the feet of a strong surfer the boxes will occasionally fail. Realistically it's the underlying foam that fails due to having more flex than the boxes. FCS Fusion or FCS2 boxes both have shorter and wider/curvier footprints. No straight edges at all. The double-round footprints will more effectively distribute the side lateral (side-to-side) loads when the side fin is fully loaded. And they come with high-density foam "collars" that are stiffer than the blank foam but not as stiff as the plastic box. An even stronger fin system is available (Gearbox, at Hanalei Fins) but none of the Future fins or the FCS2 fins will work with that system.
Thank you for that detailed structural insight. It has been my experience, the Futures system has a much better range of Twin Fin templates, has a screw to hold them in and is stronger. I have lost many FCS2 fins, and blown out the fin box on an FCS2 thruster. I'm a Futures fan based on my experiences. With FCS2 the reliance on a spring-loaded mechanism can sometimes result in the fins popping out. It is my view (I am not an engineer) Futures design distributes the load along the length of the fin base, reducing stress on the fin box itself. I think Futures are stronger and superior with choice. I would be keen to hear if others have had a different experience though.
@@blinksurf You shouldn't be losing any fins from an FCS2 install if using the set screws on the side in addition to the fore-aft lock in. Which a lot of surfers don't do. I don't have a problem with Future boxes in general except when using a keel or other large hi-aspect fin (like the Mark Richards twin) with more than 19" of surface area. Those are the installs that put a lot of side load on the box. For a regular thruster or quad in softball mainland conditions you're usually not going to stress the install unless you have a really strong surfing style, which most surfers don't. What most people don't realize is that it's usually the *blank* that fails first, with the box getting torqued as a result. A Future install into a solid wood board - or into a skimboard-weight plug - will be bulletproof because the wood supporting the box won't flex. But in 1.5# EPS foam or the light weight PU foams the foam will distort under load and the box won't be able to flex with it. As for fins, you can order virtually any template you want in any fin system - in fiberglass - from Fins Unlimited. And it's not going to cost hardly any more than if buying them retail at the surpersurfermegastore. Boards come and go, but a good finset is forever.
@@gdaddy7096 yeah I use the screws on the one remaining MR board I have with FCS2. Takes the convenience factor away from FCS2 tho.. Great tip about Fins Ulimited. Maybe the C Drive by NVS? - looks pretty cool. Would like to try them.
