NASA Thunder Race 1 GingerMan: Sudden Ignition Failure Results in Limp Mode

Saturday 6/15/24 Thunder Race #1 at GingerMan Raceway. The race director decided to do a semi-inverted starting grid, which can be challenging. This meant that, despite being the second fastest qualifier overall, we (and the other cars in the AI and AIX classes) started behind the Spec Iron (SI) cars. The Saturday race is a long race, so our strategy was to be patient in the opening laps, to let the SI cars sort themselves out amongst each other, and to retain our vision for what can be when unburdened by what has ____.
However, none of this would matter as the #3 MAP Data Systems Mustang experienced sudden ignition failure at the start of lap four, which ended our race early as the computers put the car into limp mode. Analysis of the OBD2 codes showed ignition misses spread equally across all eight cylinders, which is a dead giveaway to the most likely root cause. Despite losing the opportunity to win our 3rd race in a row, we were thankful for being able to pinpoint the problem and to correct it before the Sunday race, which we attacked with a more aggressive strategy due to the disappointing outcome in the Saturday race.
